Why This New Hypercar Startup Is Rethinking the Driver's Seat

With expertise from McLaren and Singer, Sanrivatti is developing a wildly different cockpit designed around human movement.

While automotive design differs in many ways, giving each car, truck, and SUV its own personality and identity through distinct visual characteristics, the fundamental design principles remain the same. The position of the driver has been one of those constants since the beginning, with street-legal cars like the Gordon Murray T.50, McLaren F1, and McLaren Speedtail pushing that boundary with a center-seat design. Sanrivatti, a new automotive startup based in the Netherlands, is challenging that idea even further by developing a hypercar centered on its revolutionary ‘Apex Position’.The idea comes from founder Santiago Sánchez Rivero's fascination with motorcycles. On a superbike, riders feel every movement, every shift in weight, and every change in direction almost instantly. Instead of positioning the driver behind the front axle in a low, reclined seating position like most hypercars, Sanrivatti moves the driver farther forward within the chassis. The goal is to create a stronger connection between the driver and the car while improving visibility, awareness, and overall engagement.

Moving the driver forward also offers a larger field of view, which helps with placement, especially during high-speed track sessions. The brand says its developing new technology that will allow the driver to move more naturally with the car during acceleration, braking, and cornering. While the vehicle itself is under development, Sanrivatti has already started assembling a team with experience in the automotive industry. One of the most notable additions is Paul Arkesden, who joins as Executive Director of Technology Partnerships. His resume includes leadership positions at Singer Vehicle Design, McLaren Automotive, McLaren Special Operations, and work on the legendary McLaren P1 program. Commercial advisor Geoff Dowding also brings decades of experience from Lotus, Bentley, Harley-Davidson, and Al Habtoor Motors.

The hypercar market has grown significantly, with manufacturers competing for higher top speeds and more horsepower. Sanrivatti will be taking an entirely different route by focusing on the driver, cockpit design, and the connection between human and machine. If its Apex Position delivers, it could offer one of the more interesting new ideas the hypercar world has seen in years.
