McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Nigel Mansell's Ferrari 640 Heading to RM Sotheby's Monac...

Present by RM Sotheby's. By the end of the 1980s, Nigel Mansell would have been able to look back on a fruitful Formula 1 career so far, though the best was yet to come. Almost half the decade spent with Lotus, followed by the latter half with Williams, had brought steady acclaim after a slow start marred by crashes and reliability issues. Mansell would become known for his “all or nothing” approach that brought him a career total of 31 race wins balanced against 32 retirements, many of which were the result of his tenacious racing style. The Englishman had tasted success with Lotus, netting five podium finishes, and while the race wins started to come with his second team, the stage was set for one final golden opportunity—enter Scuderia Ferrari. Over the 1986 and 1987 Formula 1 seasons, Mansell was consistently up against the fastest drivers on the grid, alerting rival teams to his form—particularly Ferrari, who had not secured a Drivers' Championship title since Jody Scheckter clinched the trophy in 1979. The team was on the lookout for a new driver to partner Gerhard Berger after declaring that the contract of the incumbent Michele Alboreto would not be renewed. The Italian ended his five-year stay with Ferrari with 80 race entries, a record that would stand until Berger surpassed it in 1995. In 1986, Mansell stepped onto the podium nine times—five of those race victories—continually impressing from behind the wheel of his Williams FW11. The following season, the Englishman went one better with six race wins. By 1988, Canon Williams had lost its relationship with Honda as an engine supplier, and the team’s car for that season—the FW12—would be powered by a Judd-supplied V-8 engine. Though Mansell showed glimmers of his previous form with two 2nd-place finishes, that year proved to be tough for him and the Williams team as he started and withdrew from 12 races out of the 16-race calendar. With Ferrari eager to replace Alboreto, Mansell was an obvious candidate from the Formula 1 grid to join the Scuderia. Any potential frustrations with the Judd-powered Williams car and eagerness for one final tilt towards the Drivers' Championship with the backing of a strong team combined for a very timely opportunity. Remarkably, Mansell would be the last team driver personally recruited by Enzo Ferrari, with the great company founder closely involved in the running of the F1 operation until his passing in August 1988. Mansell described the honor as “one of the greatest in my career” and “Il Commendatore” presented the Englishman with a Ferrari F40 as a welcome gift upon joining. Introducing the Ferrari 640 Mansell instantly hit it off with Ferrari and its partisan Italian fanbase, earning the nickname of “Il Leone”—or “The Lion”—thanks to his courageous driving style. The 1989 season—Mansell’s first racing in the red of Scuderia Ferrari—marked a newly introduced ban on turbocharged engines imposed by the FIA, and Mansell’s new car, the Ferrari 640, was powered by the Tipo 035/5; a naturally aspirated, 3.5-litre, V-12 engine. The highly respected John Barnard had been brought over from McLaren to lead the design of the 640, and the car would be the first Ferrari that the English engineer would work on The 640 quickly became recognizable with its sharp nose, narrow monocoque chassis, and wide wings that housed the radiators. Engineers at Maranello pioneered a cutting-edge semi-automatic gearbox, equipping this car with a seven-speed sequential transmission. This car had long been in development and bosses at the Maranello race team had hoped to introduce it one year earlier, having begun its designs in 1987. The development of a semi-automatic gearbox posed continual problems, however, so Ferrari had to field the preceding F1/87/88C in the 1988 season. Ahead of the first race of the 1989 season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, Mansell became the Scuderia’s 78th race entrant in the team’s 40-year history, and the driver traveled to Italy to get to grips with the new Ferrari 640. On 5 January 1989, at the Fiorano Circuit and behind the wheel of the forthcoming season’s car, the Englishman set a new track record at 1’08.12, setting the bar high for what was to come. On 1 February, the new 640 was revealed to the press as the first-ever Ferrari team car to be announced without Enzo Ferrari. The 1989 Formula 1 season Lining up at Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro on 26 March 1989, for the beginning of the season in new team colors, Mansell qualified in 6th place, with his teammate Berger sealing 3rd spot. In a highly competitive field featuring the likes of Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Nelson Piquet, Mansell fought his way through to the front of the field and won his debut race for Ferrari—sealing victory over 2nd-place Prost by over seven seconds. Though the season had started so brightly, the following succession of races quickly dampened the furor around Ferrari’s newest recruit. Early retirements came in the subsequent San Marino, Monaco, Mexico, and the U.S.A. Grands Prix, then in the sixth race of 1989 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Canada; despite qualifying in 5th place, Mansell was disqualified during a confusing chain of events. Towards the end of a rainstorm, Mansell chose to pit and switch to slick tires at the end of the second formation lap, meaning he would have to start the race from the pit lane. With seemingly little advice from race officials, the driver left the pit lane to join the circuit before the main grid had been shown green lights, resulting in Mansell being black-flagged. Circumstances would improve, though. In the following races, first at the French Grand Prix, and then at Silverstone, the driver twice finished 2nd in chassis 109. Both podium finishes came in behind Prost, who was starting to gain momentum behind his ultimately successful push towards the Drivers' title for that year. At the German Grand Prix, Mansell finished 3rd behind 2nd-placed Prost and the winning Senna, while the next race outing in Hungary would be Mansell’s chance to shine once again. Remarkably, “Il Leone” qualified in 12th position, but claimed the lead to win at the Hungaroring in the tenth race of the season, also recording the fastest lap of the day in the process. Another podium finish came at the next race in Belgium, where Mansell finished 3rd when driving chassis 112, though disappointingly, at that point his points haul for the season would be concluded. For the next few races, Mansell would continue in chassis 112, including at Ferrari’s “homecoming” Grand Prix in Monza, where he was disappointingly forced to retire with gearbox problems. At the next race in Portugal, back behind the wheel of chassis 109, he was disqualified. Then in chassis 110, he had to retire with engine problems in Japan and spun off in Australia—finally settling on 4th in the Drivers' Championship standings. Scuderia Ferrari records show that in the races that chassis 109 did not participate in the 1989 Formula 1 season—including Grands Prix in Belgium, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Australia—the 640 was used in reserve as a "T-car". Mansell got to keep chassis 109, with the car shipped to join his personal car collection in England in January 1990. For the 1990 season, Mansell and the Ferrari team continued to suffer bad luck with reliability issues, and he finished 5th overall in that year’s Drivers' standings. Undercurrents of disappointment and alleged favorable treatment for teammates resulted in Mansell calling time on his Ferrari career and—temporarily—his Formula 1 career at the end of that season, threatening to quit the sport altogether. Frank Williams saved the driver from that and he would go on to finally become a Drivers' Champion in 1992, re-joining and winning with the Williams team he left to sign for Ferrari. Since being presented to Mansell in 1990, this Ferrari 640 has been kept in the driver’s personal car collection, having not run since its last outing in the 1989 season. The Ferrari will need mechanical inspection and recommissioning prior to returning to the race track. We believe that this is the first time in history that a Works driver has offered his own Grand Prix Ferrari publicly at auction. With such an outstanding provenance and race-winning history, this stunning V-12 Ferrari F1 car would surely be the centerpiece of any motorsport collection. Mecum's Houston Auction Sells $34.5 Million, Continuing A...

With $300 million sold in the first three live auction events this year, Mecum is on a roll. And the momentum of that record-setting total continued with Mecum’s Houston auction, which sold a record total of $34.5 million in 3 days, with 86% of the 1047 vehicles that crossed the block going home to new owners. With cars in the auction ranging from Hollywood replicas to pieces from incredible collections like the Triple J Ranch Auto Collection and Dr. Sonny Rush’s collection, the Mecum Houston auction was quite the show. MUST READ: Only Artist-Signed BMW M850xi x Jeff Koons Sells Big At Auction The top seller was an officially licensed Tribute Edition of the “Eleanor” Mustang that starred in “Gone In 60 Seconds,” which eventually sold for $253,000. Following that was a replica of the 1967 Pontiac Monkeemobile, which as the name suggests, was made famous by the Monkees. It sold for $242,000. Completing the top 3 with Hollywood-inspired cars was a 1959 Cadillac Ghostbusters Ecto 1 Replica, which sold for $220,000. The Monkeemobile, Ecto 1, and the 10th highest selling Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster all came from the Triple J Ranch Auto collection, which in total contributed nearly $7.4 million to the total sale amount. The fourth highest seller was a 1966 Corvette Convertible, and it tied with a 1991 Ferrari Testarossa, which both sold for $203,500. Sixth place belonged to a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo, which sold for $189,750, and the seventh and eighth spots belonged to more modern cars: a 2018 Dodge Demon and a heavily modified and lifted 2017 Ford F250 Super Duty, which both sold for $187,000. The ninth highest seller was an iconic 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, which sold for $178,750, and the tenth highest seller came from the Triple J Ranch Auto collection, a 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster that sold for $162,250. Barrett-Jackson Auctioning 1st C8 Corvette Z06 Convertible

This C8 Z06 has an open top, and on April 9, it’ll be open for bidding. The very first mid-engined C8 Corvette Z06 caused quite a stir at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction. Selling for an incredible $3.6 million, it was instantly recognized as a car that made history, and will only make more history in the future.
