Barrett-Jackson Houston Auction: 1975 Volkswagen 23-Windo...

Presented by Barrett-Jackson - This 1975 Volkswagen Samba Type 2 has undergone a 12-month professional rotisserie restoration by well-known builder Overland Imports and has been upgraded to a 23-window. The execution is to a high level of craftsmanship with attention to detail throughout. Nothing has gone untouched, and no expense has been spared on this bus. Finished in reverse two-tone colors with a black top and Lotus White bottom exterior over a white and gray interior. The bus features safari front and rear windows, three sets of pop-out windows on each side, a full center retractable ragtop sunroof, double cargo side doors, and seating for nine. Made of Brazilian wood, the front and rear roof racks and ladder provide for additional storage and really add to that classic VW charm. Powered by a 1500cc 4-cylinder engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, the complete drivetrain has been rebuilt, including the engine, transmission, and transaxle. The engine was color-matched, and a graduated crank pulley was installed along with an adjustable tensioner and generator pulleys to complete the clean look. A brand-new carburetor was installed along with a brand-new vacuum advanced electronic ignition distributor, ignition coil, spark plugs, and wires for reliable spark and fuel delivery. The suspension, steering, and braking systems have also been rebuilt with brand-new parts throughout. The electrical system was also completely redone, from the wiring harness to the generator, voltage regulator, and battery. This 23-window rides on body-color-matched wheels with chrome hubcaps wrapped in whitewall tires. Barrett-Jackson Houston Auction: 1979 Porsche 928 From “R...

Presented by Barrett-Jackson - The hero car from Paul Brickman's 1983 film 'Risky Business'. Multiple 928s were used during the production of the film, but this car was the featured vehicle, and received the brunt of screen time and seat time from the cast. It is one of three cars driven on set, and one of two cars used during the film's signature chase scene that culminated in Tom Cruise, looking straight into the camera, declaring the German carmaker's slogan, Porsche. There is no substitute. This 928 has resided in a climate-controlled environment in a private collection, where it has been meticulously cared for. Originally painted white, the 928 was refinished in gold for the movie. Following the film's production, the car returned to California, where it was discovered and returned to its original screen appearance. This 928 has been featured at numerous museums and displays. This car was a centerpiece at Porsche Cars North America for a year and was part of the Petersen Automotive Museums influential Porsche Effect Exhibit. While at the Petersen, Chad McQueen - son of legendary racer and actor Steve McQueen - sat in this car. The 928 also features signatures from several members of the film's cast - including Bronson Pinchot (Barry), Joe Pantoliano (Guido), Curtis Armstrong (Miles), and Francine Locke (Shower Girl) - and comes with several images of the car on set covered in camera rigging equipment. Additionally, this 928 was the subject of the documentary, The Quest for the RB928 (Risky Business 928), in which filmmaker Lewis Johnsen chronicles his journey to track down this particular 928. It was in this documentary that Risky Business producer Jon Avnet stated that he taught Tom Cruise how to drive a stick shift in this very car. The 928 is powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine and backed by a 5-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. This example wears 16-inch offset 5-hole aluminum alloy wheels and features a cork-on-cork leather interior. Extensive documentation accompanies the car.    Hundreds of cars are set to cross the block with No Reserve at Barrett-Jackson’s Inaugural Houston Auction, September 16-18 at NRG Center. Check out the docket and become a bidder today! Lewis Hamilton's F1 Car Sells For Millions At Auction

One lucky bidder now owns one of Lewis Hamilton's race cars. RM Sotheby's recently held a very special auction at the Silverstone Circuit where the first-ever Lewis Hamilton Formula 1 car crossed the block. This specific F1 car was Hamilton's Turkish Grand Prix race-winning McLaren MP4-25A, chassis no. 01. The auction took place after the first-ever sprint qualifying race for the British Grand Prix, and the 140,000 spectators even got a chance to see the race car do a couple of laps. When the final bid was accepted, the F1 car was sold for £4,836,000, which equates to about $5,699,000. It was assumed that this race car would fetch a pretty penny considering it was the first Lewis Hamilton F1 car to ever be offered for public sale. With that price, this race car becomes the second most expensive F1 car ever sold at auction. Coming in at first is Michael Schumacher's F2001 car, which was sold by RM Sotheby's for $7,500,000 in 2017. In third place is Schumacher's F2002 car that was also sold by RM Sotheby's for a hammer price of $6,643,750. We can't wait to see the next RM Sotheby's and Formula 1 collaboration auction, because these are truly exciting. Source: RM Sotheby's

BULLITT-MUSTANG (1)

Original "Bullitt" Mustang GT Heading to Mecum Kissimmee ...

Presented by Mecum Auctions - In 1968, “Bullitt” cemented itself as the pivotal moment in the history of car chase scenes, doing what none had ever done before and setting the standard for all that would follow, earning it the badge of honor that it carries today as the single greatest car chase scene in history. This Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT—the hero car driven by the “King of Cool,” Steve McQueen, in the iconic 1968 film “Bullitt”—is the one that started that enduring legacy. Hidden away for decades until its reveal to the public in 2018, this star of the silver screen is now slated to cross the auction block at the world’s largest collector car auction this January at Mecum Kissimmee 2020. VIEW LISTING AND MORE INFO The iconic 1968 film “Bullitt” featured what most experts consider to be the first modern-day car chase scene, one that was executed with such innovation and finesse that it became the standard for all that followed. Longer, faster and more action packed than anything before it, the 10-minute car chase scene—featuring McQueen as Lt. Frank Bullitt chasing a black Dodge Charger while behind the wheel of this 1968 Ford Mustang GT—was the first to use cameras in a way that put the audience right inside the cars and alongside the actors. Throughout some of the most intense scenes of the famous car chase, McQueen could be seen right there, full screen, clutching the wheel of this very car as he expertly piloted it through the bustling and winding streets of San Francisco. This style of filming would become the formula for car chase scene success, serving as a blueprint for the films that followed, like “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “The French Connection,” “The Blues Brothers,” “Smokey and the Bandit,” “Vanishing Point” and plenty more. The two Highland Green 1968 Mustang fastbacks used in the scene—this one, the hero car, being used for the majority of the scene’s filming and driven by McQueen—both featured the GT package and 390 CI V-8. As McQueen considered the car itself to be a character, not just another prop, he was particular about the look and feel of the car, having the emblems and backup lights removed and adding gray Torq Thrust wheels to make the car look a bit meaner, more befitting of his character, Lt. Frank Bullitt. The Mustang’s grille was blacked out, and the paint was scuffed to give it more of an authentic, road-tested look. Meanwhile, the engine was modified for speed and sound, creating the symphony in the background of the chase scene, which featured no music at all. To accommodate the cameras that captured the revolutionary chase scene, three metal tubes were welded beneath the rockers, perpendicular to the car’s center line for the camera mounts, and holes were cut into the trunk to allow cords to run from the generator to the cameras and lights. Following its movie debut, the 1968 Mustang GT hero car was sold to Robert Ross, a Warner Bros. employee who used it as a commuter, documented by the Warner Bros. parking sticker on the bottom right corner of the windshield. It then found its way to New Jersey and into the hands of Detective Frank Marranca, who bought the car in 1970 with confirmation from Ford that certified the Mustang had indeed been purchased by McQueen’s Solar Productions for the movie. As Marranca’s family grew, he eventually put the hero car up for sale. The ad in the October 1974 issue of “Road & Track” simply read, “1968 ‘Bullett’ MUSTANG driven by McQueen in the movie…Can be documented. Best offer.” The late Robert Kiernan of Madison, New Jersey, had always wanted a 1968 Mustang fastback, and after seeing the ad, he picked up the hero car for $6,000. While McQueen himself made numerous attempts to reacquire the vehicle from Robert, even offering to help him find a similar Mustang, Robert had already fallen in love with it and respectfully declined all offers. In its early years with the Kiernan family, the Mustang was used as a daily driver by Robert’s wife, who taught at a nearby school, but when the car’s clutch went out in 1980, it was moved into the garage with just 65,000 miles on the odometer. In the years that followed, the car would move several times, first to Cincinnati with the family in 1984, and then to a friend’s home in Kentucky when the family moved to Florida in 1994. A year later, the Mustang rejoined the family when the Kiernans moved to their new farm in Nashville. And that’s where it sat up until 2001, when Ford’s introduction of a Bullitt Mustang GT inspired the then-retired Robert and his son, Sean Kiernan, to start putting some work into the car—not enough to alter the history, but just enough to make it drivable once again. However, after work began on the Mustang, Robert was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and work stalled. When Ford introduced a second Bullitt edition in 2008, the pair was once again inspired to have the engine rebuilt, but once again, life got in the way; as Robert’s Parkinson’s worsened, maintaining the farm and horses became a more important task for Sean. Sadly, Robert would never see the Mustang reach completion, as he passed rather suddenly in 2014. With his father’s death, Sean found renewed purpose in the mission they had started years before, and he went on to complete the work and return the Bullitt Mustang to roadworthy condition, unveiling it to the general public alongside Ford’s third Bullitt Edition Mustang at the Detroit Auto Show in early 2018. Having been entered into the National Historic Vehicle Register and presenting in highly original condition, this is the 1968 Ford Mustang GT hero car from the iconic 1968 film “Bullitt” starring Steve McQueen. In addition to its Highland Green paintwork, the Bullitt Mustang retains many of the fingerprints from its time in front of the camera, including the camera mounts welded to the rockers, the welded patches covering what used to be the backup lights before McQueen had them removed, modifications for camera gear in the trunk, its custom exhaust, adhesive residue on the tachometer and even the Bondo used to repair the door after it was smashed in during the final moments of the chase scene. As the Kiernans’ goal all along was to retain the Mustang in as untouched condition as possible, the completed engine rebuild is factory-faithful, featuring as many original parts as Sean and his father could conceivably use, and other work was done only by absolute necessity, including replacing the carpet, front bumper and front valance. There are few cars that have reached a truly awe-inspiring level of rarity and collectability, but the list of cars that has transcended that level to reach near mythical status as fine art pieces and pop culture icons—artifacts of automotive history—is nearly non-existent. The Bullitt Mustang is a car that extends far beyond being just another top-notch collector car. It’s a car that was once thought lost to the passage of time, and with its reemergence, its unparalleled cultural significance has solidified it as a bona fide piece of pop-culture art and as an undeniable remnant of an incredible moment in movie and automotive history. With McQueen behind the wheel during the filming of 1968’s “Bullitt,” it redefined the way audiences would forever view car chases, creating a blueprint for the way those scenes should be shot, and that enduring legacy is something the car will forever carry with it. McQueen viewed the car as a key character in itself, and it couldn’t be any more apparent today that his view was correct, as the Bullitt Mustang has once again achieved complete and utter stardom on the public stage. With its public unveiling and renewed reputation for greatness, the Bullitt Mustang is now ready for its next starring role. THIS CAR WILL BE AUCTIONED OFF AT THE MECUM KISSIMMEE 2020 EVENT (JANUARY 2-12) AS LOT F150. VIEW LISTING AND MORE INFO

Ayrton Senna's 1993 McLaren Heading To Bonhams Monaco

It has been a quarter-century since the 1993 Monaco Grand Prix. First place went to none other than Ayrton Senna, and his winning ride is heading to auction. Bonhams found the car in pristine condition, and this McLaren MP4/A8 is ready to race. Powered by Ford's Cosworth V8, it made Renault's V10 look like a Yugo. Chassis #6 was raced in 8 races in 1993, making use of active suspension technology found under every McLaren Super Series of today. Learn Everything About the New McLaren Senna It was his 6th Monaco win, which broke Graham Hill's record from 1969. Other notable finishes for this car are 4th at Magny-Cours, Hockenheim, and Spa. He was in 3rd place at Silverstone and ran out of gas, which resulted in 5th place. It was these McLarens that unseated Ferrari on the world stage. His grace behind the wheel and charisma in front of the fans will never be equaled. He left us far too soon, but his memory will live on in machines like these. Our only wish is for the winning bidder to fire it up every once in awhile. To see the car before the auction, it will be on display at the Grand Palais in Paris from February 6th to 8th. If you need more McLarens in your life, Bonhams Monaco Auction will take place May 11th, so click the link below for all the details and tell us your favorite Senna story below. View Details
