McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Many in our hobby will use results like these to interpret the value of a car, so tell us if you think of these prices.10. 2011 Porsche 911 Speedster A full 16 years after resurrecting the Speedster nameplate for 1993-94, Porsche announced the return of the now-911-based two-seat roadster in 2011. In tribute to the original Speedster based on the 356, Porsche limited production to 356 cars, only 100 of which were allotted to the U.S. market. Like its predecessors, the Speedster stood apart with its cut-down, steeply raked windscreen and double hump behind the cockpit. Even with the manually operated top in place, there is no mistaking the low-profile silhouette, which comes in almost 2.5 inches lower than the standard cabriolet. The Speedster's drivetrain is headlined by the GTS model's water-cooled 3.8L/405 HP direct-injection flat-6 engine, which unlike the GTS, was available only with Porsche's paddle-shift PDK 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The original Speedster was a spartan affair, designed by Manhattan automotive impresario Max Hoffman to appeal to California's fast-growing sports racing crowd with its minimalist appointments. Not so for the 2011 version, which was given the full Exclusive equipment treatment to make it worthy of its limited-production statusSold For $340,0009. 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback The Shelby GT350 was purpose built to homologate Ford's wildly successful Mustang for Sports Car Club of America competition. Dreamed up by motorsports-legend and 24 Hours of Le Mans-winner Carroll Shelby, these cars were essentially street-legal race cars. Shelby's original GT350s exemplified Ford's "Total Performance" campaign and bestowed an unbeatable, high-performance image on the trend-setting pony car. Each of the 562 Shelby GT350s was born as a K-code Fastback Mustang, finished in Wimbledon White at the San Jose plant and then shipped to Shelby American in Venice, California, to be transformed. The GT350's Hi-Po 289 CI V-8 received a 35 HP boost thanks to a Holley Le Mans 4-barrel carburetor with high-rise aluminum intake, Tri-Y exhaust headers, high-performance cam and dual side exhausts exiting in front of the rear wheels.Sold For $385,0008. 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition Of the 4,038 examples built during the Ford GT’s 2005-06 production run, the 343 Heritage Editions are among the most coveted. Using totally different graphics than the others, the 2006 Heritage Editions featured bright orange-and-blue livery as a tribute to the JW Racing/Gulf Oil GT40s from the 1960s and ‘70s. One of 20 produced with the $13,000 Heritage paint and base cast-aluminum BBS wheels, this gorgeous Ford GT is a one-owner car with only 1,800 original miles. Delivered new to Campbell Ford Lincoln in Niles, Michigan, the GT is also equipped with black brake calipers and standard radio. With a shape designed by Camilo Pardo, the 2005-06 Ford GTs recaptured the magic of the original Ford GT40, the endurance race car that brought Ford back to international-racing prominence by defeating Ferrari in the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.Sold For: $420,0007. 1963 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Rolls-Royce introduced its whimsically named Silver Cloud line in 1955 as a body-on-frame car, allowing coach-built bodies to be utilized in place of the standard body produced by the Pressed Steel Company. At a time when vehicles were moving toward favoring the monocoque construction, the Silver Cloud presented a desirable customizable luxury that particular and discriminating buyers appreciated. With the Silver Clouds coming in at more than $16,000 when purchased new, they were unquestionably geared toward the fastidious buyer, and Rolls-Royce was keen on catering to its established customer based. After eight years of production, in 1963, the Silver Cloud peaked with the third edition, aptly named the Silver Cloud III. The Cloud IIIs came standard as 4-door saloon models, but several variations were provided by coachbuilders, including the H.J. Mulliner 2-door convertible body seen on this 1963 model.Sold For: $610,0006. 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta Designed with considerable input from Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, the Ferrari 458 Italia debuted as the most capable, powerful, beautiful and technologically advanced mid-engined V-8 Berlinetta in the company’s history. It was only a matter of time before a Spider version was unveiled, and that happened at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. In 2013, the 458 Speciale Berlinetta got tifosi pulses racing with an increase in power from 570 HP to 597 HP at 9,000 RPM, and tweaks to both aerodynamics and the electronic systems controlling the engine, transmission and suspension. And like the original 458 Italia, the Speciale was followed by a Spider version, this time with the Aperta appellation added on to signify its open cockpit.Sold For: $620,0005. 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort Just try to imagine it: the year is 1987, and Porsche has just launched a new car for the ultra-competitive FIA Group B rally series. It looks like a 911 that has overdosed on human growth hormone, with slippery Kevlar and aluminum bodywork reaching out to broad flanks, a long, wide tail with a massive integrated spoiler and a proliferation of intake scoops and vents scattered around the flowing bodywork. It is not only fast, but terrifyingly so, with a 0-60 MPH time of 3.6 seconds, 0-100 in 8.8, and a terminal velocity of 190 MPH; it slams to a halt from 70 MPH in just 166 feet and generates .87 g on the skid pad, all of these figures being the most impressive ever recorded in magazine tests to that time.Sold For: $950,0004. 2004 Porsche Carrera GT In 2003, the technical wizards at Stuttgart delighted Porsche fanatics and the motoring press alike with the Carrera GT, an all-new design packed with every advanced technology at Porsche’s disposal. Unconstrained by management, Porsche Motorsport Director Herbert Ampferer had drawn together specialists in carbon-fiber construction, powertrain design and aerodynamics to fill out his design team. They designed an incredibly strong yet lightweight 220-pound core structure made entirely of carbon-fiber, the first in any road-going automobileSold For: $985,0003. 2017 Ferrari F12tdf When Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo announced the front-engined V-12-powered F12, he made clear his intent to make it the highest-performance production Ferrari ever built. A spectacular performer in every respect, the F12 made good on that promise, earning “Top Gear” magazine’s "The Supercar of the Year" award in 2012. But this is Ferrari we’re talking about, and Ferrari never stands still. As proof, in 2015 they introduced the F12tdf. The name is an allusion to the famed Ferraris that dominated the grueling Tour de France road-and-track race from 1956 through 1964, defining the very concept of a grand-touring road car that can win in the most demanding racing conditions.Sold For: $1,250,0002. 2015 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Bugatti unveiled a targa-top version of its Veyron 16.4 supercar at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Named the Grand Sport, it featured minor revisions to the windshield and running lights, and it was extensively modified with reinforcements to maintain high torsional stiffness throughout its structure. Packaged with a tight-fitting hardtop and a fabric soft top for temporary use only, the Grand Sport maintained the same 253 MPH top speed as the fixed-roof original, but it was limited to 229 MPH with the top removed.Sold For: $2,350,0001. 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari Life, as the popular saying admonishes, comes at you fast. It’s intended as a reminder that one’s circumstances or attitudes can change in the blink of an eye, but in another context, it can apply to the explosion of technical advances since the first wave of exotic hypercars crashed onto the automotive landscape in 2004. The arrival then of Porsche’s Carrera GT and the Ferrari Enzo signaled a pivotal transformation in the supercar concept that reflected the light-speed pace of contemporary technological advances.Sold For: $3,450,000So, what do you think? Aston Martin DBR1 Breaks Records At Monterey

Race cars are sometimes tricky to sell. Owning and driving them requires mechanical aptitude and patience, traits that some collectors are not willing to endure. But if production was limited to only 5 cars, it completely changes the situation.David Brown bought Aston Martin in 1947, and his line of high-performance luxury cars was named with his initials. One of his famous racers, the DB3S was based on a street-legal car, as per regulations at the time. But a change to the rulebook for 1956 allowed for competitors to build race-only cars. The DBR1 was the first Aston Martin specifically built as a race car. Only five cars were produced, and they brought home numerous wins. The prototype was this car "DBR1/1", and it won the 1,000 km of Nürburgring in 1959. After a complete restoration, it has also become the most expensive British car ever sold. At RM Sotheby's Monterey auction, it hammered for $22,550,000. From the light alloy body to a futuristic 5-speed transaxle, this car was built to dominate. RM Sotheby's had very strict criteria on bidders, who required vetting and a background check. They also chose to showcase it on the world's greatest car website, so that prospective buyer could see all the details. Cover Car: 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird Sells for Big Money

The famous Superbird is the result of Plymouth taking the Road Runner and modifying it for NASCAR. Mecum Auctions recently auctioned an pristine example of the model at their Harrisburg 2017 event for big money. RM Sotheby’s to Auction 13 Iconic Ferraris At Monterey

The year seems to be flying by because it feels like we just left Monterey Car Week 2016. With news of this year's highlights beginning to trickle in, RM Sotheby's announcement outshines all the others. A press release over the weekend outlines 13 classic and contemporary Ferraris that will highlight their event. These lucky 13 cars have been dubbed the Ferrari Performance Collection. All cars are low-mileage examples from the collection of a single owner. They represent over 50 years of racing-inspired automobiles, these are among the most coveted street-legal cars in existence. Ten cars are selling without reserve so the results will be used to gauge the pulse of our hobby. Chassis 87895 is one of 213 US-spec cars. It comes with luggage, tools and the original invoice. Following close behind is a 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO with only 481 miles. Instead of a race inspired street car, the GTO was actually a detuned 599XX. On the more affordable end of the spectrum, a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS and a 2004 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale are among the cleanest examples on the market. The trio of headliners will have reserve prices because to make sure they find a proper home, and you might be surprised to find a Dino making the list. Steel bodied cars were prone to rust, but the aluminum examples have become greatly sought after. Next up will be a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 with certification by Ferrari Classiche. The headliner of the event will be a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta. It is among the last production cars to be eligible for endurance racing. It could bring upwards of ten million dollars so we will be there with live coverage via our Facebook page. 1996 Porsche 911 GT2 Evo Brings Big Money At Mecum

If a car auction has rare or fast machines, you will find us there and read about it here. That means we have enough auction credentials to make interesting artwork for the garage, but more on that later. Since we see what happens behind the scenes, there are good events, and also mediocre ones. Then there is Mecum. Even tuning in for coverage, you can easily see that everyone is having a great time with Dana Mecum and his team of fast-paced auctioneers. Porsche 993 For Sale Perhaps that's how he amassed some of the most coveted cars on earth to the Original Spring Classic. The star of their 30th-anniversary event was an incredibly rare Porsche 911. If you read our overview of the 993 series you probably know it was the last air-cooled design. It was also the introduction of the wild Porsche 911 GT2, a no-holds-barred twin turbo. The engine masters in Stuttgart managed to make 600 horsepower from a 3.6-liter flat-six, but it wasn't exactly street legal. So eleven race cars were built to take on the world. The GT2 class doesn't allow AWD, so the driveshaft and differential were left to the 'regular' 911 turbos. With 490 lb-ft of torque and a race-spec six-speed transmission, it was able to hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph. Porsche never disclosed the price for such power, which has only added to its appeal. That's why two bidders erupted into a war last weekend which ended with a hammer price of $1,450,000. To all the journalists who said the air-cooled market had softened, you might want to revise your résumé. A Porsche 911 GT2 RS is as close as most of us will get, so check out our listings and remember those who served this weekend.

However, no matter how much it sells for, 100 percent of the hammer proceeds will go to United Way.This new ZL1 1LE is the most track-capable Camaro that Chevrolet has ever created. Its aerodynamics, suspension, light weight, wheels, and tires were all optimized for the track. One of the most notable modifications on the new ZL1 1LE has to be the carbon fiber rear wing, which helps it stand out from the rest of the Camaros. Under its hood is a supercharged LT4 engine capable of 650 horsepower. Lengedary Jaguar Set to Sell for Almost $10 Million

Everyone knows that classic Ferraris can sell for massive amounts of money, but what about Jaguars? The English automaker has a long history of iconic automobiles, with one in particular set to cross Bonham's Scottsdale auction block.The 1963 Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Competition, number S850667, was the tenth of the twelve Factory Lightweights that were ever built. This specific car also won the 1963 Australian GT Championship. It's also very well-documented, is very original and, get this, it has less than 4,000 original miles recorded with just three owners from new. With an event that has outgrown the Monterey waterfront, Russo & Steele have set new records for collector car prices. What started as an open air event at the Fisherman's Wharf parking lot has evolved into a must-see event of the weekend. Under tents that would leave PT Barnum speechless, they brought together 250 of the world's most sought after automobiles, We told you what to expect a few weeks ago, but now the final numbers are in. Here are the most notable sales of the event: 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL With only 17,443 miles, the only restoration needed was new chrome plating on the bumpers. Numbers matching examples of these cars are becoming very hard to find, which is why it was able to bring $1,050,105. 2004 Ford GT Prototype As the final validation of their engineering efforts, Ford's design team and assembly workers signed the underside of the hood of this significant car. Built as the final prototype, it was the last pre-production Ford GT built before official production began. It was used to validate the assembly line techniques and to ensure the electrical system could perform as a daily driver. Most GTs have been well cared for in climate controlled garages, but Ford's SVT division racked up almost 50,000 miles in testing. It sold for $836,000. 1993 Jaguar XJ220 Supercars of the 90's are intimidating because they delivered incredible power with none of the modern stability systems we're accustomed to. The XJ220 is just such an example. With a twin turbo 3.5L V6, it offers 540 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque at all wheels. As such, the owner only amassed 871 kilometers (541 miles) since new. Capable of running with the fastest cars in the world, it sold for $435,000 2014 Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series When AMG is given free reign to design the ultimate GT car, their menacing builds are known as the Black Series. In the quest for aerodynamic dominance, the track focused SLS AMG GT trades civility for downforce with carbon fiber spoilers. Since the new AMG GT models are based on the 4.0L twin turbo engine, the SLS might be the last big 6.3L naturally aspirated model. $418,000 2009 Ferrari 16M Built to celebrate Ferrari's 16th victory as a Formula1 constructor, the 16M is more than just a fancy F430. Only 499 cars were built, and they are as close to a street-legal race car as you will get. The interior is all carbon fiber and the exhaust is unrestricted. Capable of reaching 62 mph in 3.7 seconds, it stands as one of the most significant production cars in recent history. $355,000 1970 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 The first production Ferrari with power steering and power brakes, the 365 was a more practical cruiser than its predecessors. Instead of a rear mounted transaxle, the 365 placed the transmission behind the engine in a conventional layout. This allowed for ample trunk space and room for rear passengers. Originally owned by a famous Hollywood producer, it sold for $346,500 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV The car that brought Lamborghini into the modern era, this Countach was ordered with every option. The first Countach to offer 4 valves per cylinder, the new 5.1L version of their venerable V12 did away with carburetors in favor of Bosch fuel injection. With only 18,469 miles, it is a time capsule of 80's excess. $321,750 1957 Porsche 356 Restored to an exceedingly high standard including the factory-specified color combination, this 1957 356 Speedster is complete with documentation. An outstanding original car from San Diego, California was the foundation used to begin a stunning restoration by Porsche marque specialists in Newport Beach, California. $250,000 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello For the discerning buyer who needs a manual transmission, this well-preserved example has only 3,781 miles.
