California-based UST Takes Majority Control of Italdesign

Back in May this year, we reported that Audi was preparing to sell Italdesign as part of a wider cost cutting effort. Staff at the firm’s Moncalieri headquarters were told during a company-wide meeting that the firm was officially on the market. That announcement raised immediate questions about the future of one of Italy’s most influential design and engineering houses. Today, the next step is confirmed. UST, headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, will acquire a majority stake in Italdesign, while Lamborghini keeps a significant share and Audi remains a long term strategic partner and major client. Italdesign has been part of the Volkswagen Group since 2010. The firm was originally founded in 1968 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani, helped shape more than five decades of automotive design. The design house's extensive and diverse portfolio includes iconic models like thee original Volkswagen Golf, BMW M1, DeLorean DMC 12, Maserati MC12, the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Nissan GT-R 50 NISMO. Over time, Italdesign expanded into engineering, prototyping, limited series production, and industrial design. With more than 1,300 employees across 10 international sites, the company remains profitable, though heavily dependent on Volkswagen Group contracts. That reliance became a strategic concern. Audi’s difficult 2024, marked by softer EV demand and increased global competition, placed pressure on non core assets. UST’s arrival introduces a new framework. The California based company brings AI systems, software defined vehicle development, digital ecosystem engineering, and a global workforce of more than 30,000 across 30 countries. Italdesign contributes end to end capability in design, hardware development, electronics, and small scale production. This combined capability is designed to support the development of fully modern, digitally enabled vehicles, where software and physical engineering must be developed together rather than separately. “This partnership will bring benefits to all parties involved. It will allow Italdesign to accelerate the expansion of its service portfolio in new markets and achieve deeper penetration in various international markets. Italdesign is aiming to become the first full integrator of hardware and software worldwide, both in the automotive sector and across other hightechnology industrial sectors.” - Antonio Casu, Chief Executive Officer at Italdesign Giugiaro S.p.A. UST will assume operational responsibility while honoring and building on Italdesign’s Italian heritage, design culture, and the talent of its employees. Audi’s leadership also stresses continuity. Italdesign will continue supporting Audi programs that rely on its design, prototype, and engineering expertise. The exact financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, and the transaction is pending regulatory approval. What began as a cost driven review has now evolved into a structural shift that equips Italdesign with a global technology backbone, while keeping its identity and long-standing ties to Audi and Lamborghini intact. Audi Reports Its Global 2024 Sales Results

Globally, 2024 was a year of transformation for Audi. As one of the largest names in European automotive luxury, Audi has committed to being at the forefront of futuristic electrification, with a lineup that is expanding at a breakneck pace with the goal of providing customers with electric and combustion-powered options that are both packed with high-tech features and plush appointments. In 2024, the Audi Group delivered over 1.7 million vehicles globally, and that includes a total of 164,000 fully-electric examples, a decline of 8 percent compared to last year’s number. The total amount of deliveries is down by 12 percent compared to the previous year, and Audi cites reasons like increased competition, a challenging economy, and limited part availability. In addition, the year is part of a period of transition for Audi, with 20 new models debuting between 2024 and 2025. However, despite challenges for Audi across its lineup and in global markets this past year, certain models showed success. In the United States, Audi Sport’s more than 9,000 deliveries represented an increase of 4 percent compared to the year before, and represented its best year ever in the market. Overall, deliveries in Italy increased, including deliveries for electric vehicles. Along with Audi’s new lineup of electric vehicles, the Q5 sold well at 298,000 examples globally, along with the A6 at 244,000 and 215,000 Q3s. Despite challenges this past year, Audi continues to transform its lineup and looks forward to a 2025 with strength and innovation, especially as it gears up to enter the Formula 1 racing stage in 2026. Audi Group Reports Q3 2024 Results In Challenging Market

The Audi Group navigates a challenging economic situation. Known for its enticing lineup of brands, including Audi itself, Lamborghini, Bentley, and the iconic Italian motorcycles of Ducati, the Audi Group has experienced recent success, electrifying its offerings throughout its portfolio, introducing powerful hybrid supercars with Lamborghini, innovative ultra-luxe hybrids and an upcoming fully-electric model with Bentley, and an expanding suite of all-electric models with Audi. In the first nine months of this year, however, Audi Group reported that a challenging economic situation has put a damper on growth. As the year comes to a close, Audi looks forward to hopefully seeing newly introduced and updated model families contribute to the revitalization of its success, especially within the Audi brand. Revenue for the group decreased by 8.2 percent, while a challenging economic environment meant that operating profit was more than halved compared to last year’s number for the first nine months. Globally, the Audi Group delivered 1,251,381 vehicles between January and September 2024, and 115,788 of those were all-electric models. However, deliveries decreased by nearly 11 percent for the Audi brand, with Audi citing reasons like limited parts availability. The brand is aggressively launching new models, with 15 debuts this year and more to come in 2025 and before the end of 2024, like a new Q5 Sportback and a new A7. Hopefully, the launches of new models will spark new growth. Meanwhile, Bentley's and Ducati's global deliveries decreased for the first nine months of 2024. However, Lamborghini continues to prove successful within the Audi Group, with its 8,411 deliveries in the first nine months of the year representing an increase of 8.6 percent. Lamborghini’s revenue and operating profit have also increased. As the end of the year approaches, Audi Group’s innovative lineup and revered brands are expected to result in financial success. With the financial results in for the second quarter of 2024, Audi’s pioneering status in the EV world continues to prove itself successful, with increasing electric vehicle sales as the lineup grows. With 48,687 deliveries in the quarter, the number of deliveries in Q2 2024 decreased by 12 percent compared to the same quarter of last year, while the 92,913 year-to-date deliveries represent a 14 percent decrease year-over-year. With the first quarter of the year finished, Audi of America has reported its results, bringing in 44,226 new car sales through the quarter. Unfortunately, this number represents a 16 percent decrease when compared to the same period last year, and various models throughout Audi’s lineup saw decreased sales throughout the period. In addition, compared to last year’s first quarter, sales of the Audi R8 increased by 87%, as enthusiasts get their hands on the final examples of the legendary supercar as it sees its finale. A new smart factory is being built

Audi Is Building A New EV Factory In China

The plant, focusing on digitalization and sustainability, sets to revolutionize electric vehicle production. Audi is propelling its electrification journey forward with the construction of a new, state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) factory in Changchun, China. This groundbreaking venture, a collaboration between Audi and its Chinese partner FAW (First Automotive Works), marks a significant milestone in Audi's global strategy, emphasizing digitalization, efficiency, and sustainability. At the heart of Audi's electrification strategy for China, the Audi FAW NEV Company is a pioneer in Audi's global expansion. This new facility is not just another plant; it is Audi's first in China dedicated exclusively to all-electric vehicles. Helmut Stettner, CEO of Audi FAW NEV Company Ltd., points out the plant's pivotal role in advancing the region's economic development and establishing a comprehensive industrial ecosystem around the new site. The journey began in March 2021 when Audi and FAW Group founded Audi FAW NEV Company, marking a historical moment as the first joint company in China where Audi holds a majority stake. Progress has been swift and significant. By June 2022, the company commenced the construction of the new production site, and in November, they celebrated the completion of the building shells. Come 2024, the plant will buzz with activity as personnel move in, and by the end of the year, the series production of the first all-electric models is set to commence. What sets this factory apart is its sheer scale and futuristic approach. Spanning over 154 hectares, it's slightly larger than Audi's plant in Neckarsulm. With a capacity to produce up to 150,000 fully electric Audi models annually, the plant will initially focus on three models from the Audi A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron series. The production site will cover the entire automotive production value chain, signifying Audi's commitment to comprehensive manufacturing excellence. Digitalization plays a crucial role in the construction and operation of this new factory. Audi has leveraged digital twins and 3D technology from the start, ensuring precision and efficiency in every aspect of the production process. International collaboration is enhanced through VR technology, allowing construction experts from Ingolstadt to virtually visit and collaborate with their Chinese counterparts in real-time. Sustainability is at the forefront of Audi's vision. As part of its global environmental program “Mission:Zero”, Audi is committed to achieving net carbon-neutral production. The Changchun plant will use 100 percent green energy, with rooftop solar panels generating substantial electricity annually. The factory will also feature a closed water cycle, emphasizing Audi's dedication to responsible water use and resource efficiency. Audi FAW NEV Company is a beacon of innovation and sustainability. With the integration of intelligent fault detection, real-time monitoring, and predictive algorithms, the company is setting new benchmarks in efficient, sustainable, and digital manufacturing. As Audi forges ahead with its new EV factory in China, it not only reaffirms its commitment to the future of mobility but also demonstrates its dedication to environmental stewardship and technological innovation. This venture is a testament to Audi's vision of driving progress and shaping the future of electric mobility. View All Audis For Sale Image Source: Audi

Audi's EV Revolution Improves Sales In Q3 2023

Audi continues on a successful and transformative path as a manufacturer. As the automotive industry reaches a turning point and begins to transform towards electrification, Audi is one of the manufacturers that is leading the charge. With a large and yet-growing lineup of electric models, and a promise to have a 30% electrified lineup by 2025 and full carbon neutrality by 2050, Audi is at the forefront of a new chapter in automotive history. While it may be a bold move to move towards electrification so quickly, it has proven successful as Audi has recently enjoyed quarters and periods of successful financial results, and the third quarter of 2023 is no exception. This past quarter, Audi is happy to report that its year-to-date sales improved by 26 percent compared to 2022. Within the quarter itself, the improvement was by 21 percent. However, electric models took center stage when it came to Audi’s success this past quarter, with sales success in the name of a year-over-year improvement of 93 percent, meaning that sales of Audi electric vehicles in Q3 2023 nearly doubled in comparison to Q3 2022. The future is exciting for Audi, despite the farewell of cherished models like the R8 and TT making this year bittersweet for Audi fans. However, the continuing sales success of Audi’s growing all-electric lineup is proof that once those models are introduced, they are going to be just as iconic, celebrated, and important to automotive history going forward.
