McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. How Bugatti’s W18 Veyron Concepts Led To The Most Influen...

Discover the concepts that lead to the Veyron. Unseemingly innocent to today's automotive standards, the quest to achieve hypercar status for a manufacturer was not as straightforward as one might believe. Massive powertrains paired with hybrid-assisted electric motors now prove to be the winning recipe to obtain those four-figure horsepower figures successfully. Still, it's important to remind ourselves where the passion and drive to push performance boundaries came from. While one may argue the true definition of a "hypercar" with iconic names like the McLaren F1, no other car has shaken up the automotive world quite like the Bugatti Veyron. Understanding its moment in time as a successor to the legendary EB110 and the predecessor to modern marvels like the Chiron, Mistral, Bolide, and Tourbillon, we're often left wondering how the Veyron came to fruition as a timeless icon. The source behind Bugatti, and more specifically the Veyron, began with the ambition of the former Chairman of the Volkswagen Group, Ferdinand Karl Piëch. The idea of engineering a car that would break the boundaries of performance, design, and luxury came while Piëch dreamed up a revolutionary 18-cylinder engine during a train ride in Japan. The very first sketches of his W18 appeared on an envelope and became the driving force behind Bugatti after Volkswagen AG acquired brand rights in May 1998. Bugatti EB 118 When the EB 118 debuted in 1998 at the Paris Motor Show, it marked the beginning of Bugatti's post-war revival under Volkswagen Group. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the two-door grand tourer came equipped with a massive front-mounted 6.3L W18 engine that produced 547 horsepower and sent power to all four wheels. The car's long hood, central spine detail, and upright stance were more about presence than performance. Inside, the car leaned heavily into retro-inspired luxury, with an Art Deco design DNA and a focus on craftsmanship. Bugatti EB 218 The EB 218 followed in early 1999, offering a sedan take on the same concept. Based on the earlier EB 112, this version was larger and aimed directly at the ultra-luxury saloon market. It kept the W18 engine and all-wheel-drive system but stretched the proportions to over 17 feet in length. With softer styling and four doors, the EB 218 emphasized comfort and size rather than performance. It wasn't trying to be sporty. It was a luxury platform that showed Bugatti's interest in building something closer to a modern-day Type 41 Royale. Bugatti EB 18/3 Chiron Things took a different turn with the EB 18/3 Chiron in September 1999. The concept ditched the front-engine layout and placed the W18 in a mid-engine configuration behind the seats. The result was a lower, more performance-focused car with more traditional supercar proportions. Designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, it still used the same drivetrain as the earlier concepts but relied more on speed and agility. Naming it after Louis Chiron was an attempt to connect with Bugatti's racing history, but the car still felt more like a design study than a final product. Bugatti EB 18/4 Veyron A month later, the EB 18/4 Veyron was revealed in Tokyo. This time, the design came from within Volkswagen Group, with Jozef Kabaň leading the project. The EB 18/4 looked much closer to a production model, even if it still used the W18. However, the limitations of the W18, especially in heat and packaging, soon led to a switch to a newly developed quad-turbocharged W16. Using the top-speed key in a special lock cylinder transforms the car. The suspension drops and the aerodynamics are engaged. Exhaust is opened and the turbos are spooled. Invoking launch control, the Bugatti Veyron 0-60 is gone in less than 2.5 seconds. You can’t inhale due to 1.0 G pushing you into the seats. NHRA legends are left behind as the Bugatti Veyron quarter mile is eclipsed in 10.1 seconds. Passing 1,320 feet at 140 mph, you really begin to put the power down. Sure you could trade top speed for acceleration with more potent differential gears, but your Bugatti Veyron top speed will be reached just shy of 260 mph. The Bugatti Veyron weight is 4,147 lbs, and while that might seem heavy, you have to consider that it carries a 16 cylinder engine, and is propelled by 987 horsepower. Bugatti Veyron Engine Now we turn our attention to the elephant in the room. What makes the legendary ability of the Bugatti Veyron possible is its 8.0-liter engine. It is essentially two VR8 blocks sharing a crankshaft. This genius design traces its roots back to the legendary VR6. Cars like the Volkswagen Corrado, and the legendary Golf R32 gave the engineers the know-how of putting a large, powerful engine in a footprint that wouldn’t otherwise fit that size of power plant. The Bugatti Veyron engine takes that know-how to the absolute max. The Siamese bores pack eight cylinders under each head, with four camshafts operating the 64 valves. Having the same 3.39″ bore and stroke, the engine is a square design aimed at equal horsepower and torque. At wide-open throttle and top speed, the Bugatti Veyron fuel pumps are moving 1.4 Gallons Per Minute! Because of the absolutely massive Veyron engine size of 8 liters, you will have a rather shocking 3 miles per gallon at 259 mph. The adaptive boost-pressure fuel injection adds a few pounds of fuel pressure for every pound of boost pressure. This prevents a lean condition since the intake has intercoolers just before the injectors. Running wide open will empty the 26-gallon Bugatti Veyron gas tank in 12 minutes, providing your tires are brand new. If your tires are not showroom fresh the car will not allow you to risk your life. Stop-go driving will offer 8 mpg in the city, and a wild 14 mpg under “normal” highway cruising. Fuel is constantly being circulated back to the tank to keep it cool, not unlike the systems of the SR-71 Blackbird. Oil is also in motion, traveling through the dry sump system and its own radiator. An oil change will cost $21,000 at the dealer because it takes calls for 27 hours of labor. The Bugatti Veyron has 9 drain plugs for the 60W oil. Being thick as molasses when cold, the unfortunate technician will be forced to drain the beast at operating temperature (230 degrees F). Bugatti Veyron Engine Oil Getting an oil change on a car like the Bugatti Veyron is an important and complex process. To access the drain plugs, a Bugatti technician needs to remove parts of the underbody, and then to refill the oil, the technician needs to remove the grille, fender liners, rear deck, and rear brakes, which takes a lot of skill and a lot of time. A Bugatti Veyron oil change takes several hours, and costs between $20,000 and $25,000. Fortunately, due to the fact that Bugatti owners drive their cars less frequently than most car owners, an oil change on a Bugatti is required less frequently as well. It is recommended that you get an oil change on your Bugatti once a year, to make sure fresh oil is in the engine, no matter how often you drive. This makes the Bugatti oil change price a bit more bearable, especially compared to what the car costs in the first place. In order to withstand the immense demands of sending such power to all wheels, the transmission fluid and differentials have their own cooling closed-loop cooling systems. If you somehow manage to detonate yours, Bugatti does not have individual components. Instead, they will offer you a new replacement for only $120,000! Trans-phobia has plagued many celebrities, but it will disappear once you are behind the wheel. Bugatti Veyron Brakes Stopping fast is more fun than going fast, so the Bugatti Veyron needs massive brakes. A slight tap of the pedal will turn the rear spoiler vertical. This one move is enough to smack you at triple-digit speeds, but the pedal also invokes the action of massive titanium calipers. They have a grip on 15.7″ carbon ceramic rotors up front and 15″ in the rear. Rotors the size of trash can lids can easily turn 350 mph into 3,272 degrees Fahrenheit. Bugatti Veyron brakes literally put a stop to the aftermarket’s ever-increasing sizes, but they come with one caveat. The price for new pads and rotors is more than your daily driver. Bugatti Veyron Design Taking cues from the 90’s Bugatti prototypes, Jozef Kaban penned the car’s striking design. The inspiration from Giorgetto Giugiaro in the Veyron is clearly evident, although sacrifices had to be made. Every fluid in a Bugatti is subject to extreme heat. The age-old battle between stylists and engineers resulted in a car with 10 radiators. The engine’s coolant requires the first three. They are sized to fit behind the grille openings. Because the car has four turbochargers, each bank has an intercooler inside the intake. They are cooled by another large heat exchanger. The final three dedicated circuits are for the engine, transmission, and differential oil. Each one has its own inlet and outlet hiding in plain sight. A beautiful curve begins along the door jamb and it evolves into the car’s beltline in the rear quarter-panels. Almost a parabola below the waist, it allows the cockpit to be incredibly strong without sacrificing ease of entry. Opening the door reveals a quite spacious and elegant interior. Machined aluminum, carbon fiber, and leather play off of each other to create a masterpiece. Symmetries in even the smallest details are just part of what makes the Bugatti Veyron amazing. What sets it apart from the other cars in this price bracket is visibility. The ample rear glass offers a better line-of-sight than many American sports coupes. Bugatti Veyron Tires When the average enthusiast asks how much is a Bugatti Veyron, the true fanatic wants details on the rubber. In order to hold together at 259 mph, Michelin went back to their drawing board. They had patented a high-speed run-flat design in 2000, but only Bugatti could afford to produce wheels for them. The genius of the Michelin PAX run-flat tire design is in its conical shape. The Bugatti Veyron boasts an incredible cornering ability, and it is due to conical wheels. The outer diameter of the wheel is 18″ and over 19″ inboard. Consequently, the tires can only be mounted to the wheels using a proprietary machine at the factory. This one fact made even the wealthiest owners scratch their heads. If you don’t have a spare set ready to go, the tire replacement involves shipping all four to France. A shrewd negotiator must factor this into the Bugatti Veyron cost because nothing in the aftermarket will work. In order to offer something for all supercar owners, they needed a convertible. Since the powertrain would not allow room for a conventional drop-top mechanism, a Targa roof was developed. Production began in limited numbers in 2009, and the final examples were finished in 2015. What makes them truly unique is that only 150 examples were built. Each one arrived with a removable hardtop that could be left at home on sunny days. In the event of light rain, the soft top was stored in the trunk. It consists of several hand-stitched layers of fabric held fast by an umbrella mechanism. Without the hardtop in place, the car withheld top speed to only 229 mph. Beyond this, aerodynamic turbulence would cause unstable situations. Extensive reinforcement to the chassis was needed, given that it was never envisioned as a roadster. So the factory decided to offer three unique examples of the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport for sale. First was a yellow over black motif priced at $2,150,000. Next up is a navy blue over silver, and the final was brown & brushed aluminum. The last two had a retail price of $2,373,000 when ordered. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Red Edition - 2011 Sometimes it is necessary to stop the wild orders and get back to basics. It is a far cry to call the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport a normal car, but the color red is used to sell almost every mode of transportation. That is why the Red edition is a solid-color masterpiece. Everything from the wheel spokes to the seat stitching is red, and it looks straight out of hell! Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Blanc - 2010 Matte white will never go out of style, and it was ordered by a customer in the UK. The Bianco Canopus Matte has black engine covers and wheels, along with other dark accents. As a true 1-of-1, it was ordered with an additional glass roof, sports seats, and diamond-cut 2-tone wheels. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Noir The heart of darkness, only 20 examples were produced! Those who wished to replicate the look were in for a shock. That is because a set of wheels are $120,000 each. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport by Bijan Pakzad - 2011 Another custom order, this car was specified by a dealer for Bijan Pakzad. The famed fashion designer behind the House of Bijan, he, unfortunately, passed away without driving it more than a few miles. His son has been seen cruising in the car to the hottest locations in Southern California. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Soleil de Nuit - 2010 This one is the “sun of the night” and it blends dark blue metallic with brushed aluminum. Wheels are borrowed from the Sang Noir series, and they provide a rich contrast to the burnt orange interior. Commissioned for the 2010 Dubai Motor Show, it was intended to upset the Middle East supercar scene. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Wei Long Edition 2012 China has a booming market for the world’s best cars, so the Wei Long edition was built for the Beijing Auto Show. Just in time for the Year of the Dragon, it was a collaboration between Bugatti and Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur, the Royal Porcelain Company of Berlin. The exterior is as refined as the finest Chinaware, and it has an interior of Carmine Red leather. Handmade silk floormats and embroidered headrests are embossed with the dragon so you will not mistake it with another. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport Once again, their engineers became restless. Pushing the envelope of design and aerodynamics, the Bugatti Veyron underwent a major facelift. The air scoops behind the cockpit were replaced by flat NACA ducts, with dual heat extractors on the roof. A rear spoiler that was easily defined on earlier models was made large enough to blend into the rear body. Not only does this make it look like an alien, but it preserves a central spine that looks almost reptilian. Along with a new roof spoiler and a front wind deflector, the comprehensive package was almost a new car. Larger turbos and intercoolers needed more air and more cooling because their goal was a healthy increase in power and the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport top speed. You might be surprised that the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport 0-60 is unchanged, that is because they reached the limit of the tires. Every exterior part is covered in black carbon, which evokes a notion of a black hole on wheels. The interior is awash in snow beige and beluga black. The 2-tone approach is used on the seats, floor mats, and even the steering wheel. Black carbon also accents the doors and the center console on this 1 of 1 build. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Edition Merveilleux - 2011 Steeped in mystery, Bugatti’s management and technicians uploaded a video of this car rolling off the assembly line. CEO Wolfgang Durheimer wished a happy 40th birthday to a wealthy Chinese buyer named ‘Simon’. Veyron Super Sport Le Saphir Bleu - 2012 Nothing conveys a feeling of mystery or intrigue like a blue sapphire. This work of art lives in London, and it wears baby blue in a wild pattern over a base of Sapphire blue paint. The contrasts play off of the car’s curves, which makes it appear to be coming at you from any angle. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse All good things must come to an end, and so it was for the Bugatti Veyron. In order to build the fastest roadster of all time, a targa roof was added to the already potent Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. Because this one has the big engine and targa top, revisions to the chassis and aerodynamics were needed. Development began in early 2012, with the final production models delivered in 2015. A host of special editions and one-off examples were produced, and no detail was too small. This made the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse price among the most expensive Bugattis ever offered. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport World Record Car, WRC Edition - 2013 To commemorate the world record, eight examples were built. Each one has black carbon fiber with Arancia orange details. At least you have a solid alibi if you are clocked at 267 mph! Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Lang Lang Edition 2013 This special order was for famed Pianist Lang Lang. He chose ivory white and black to mimic the keys of a piano. It also is a heritage livery from the Type 57 Alante. The interior has white leather with black stitching, and the seams are in the shape of musical notes. His signature is found in gold on the center console. Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse La Finale 2015 The last two examples of the Bugatti Veyron are the 150th roadster and the 450th coupe. They are both finished in red and black exposed carbon fiber. This replicates the solid colors of the first production Veyron, and they bring the total number of exposed carbon Veyrons to 8. A decade of production led to the last two cars being the first examples of red exposed carbon. Bugatti Veyron Standout Features Anything capable of these speeds gets hot. Four banks of four cylinders generate massive heat. The four turbochargers pressurize air, which generates heat. So let’s take a look at the cooling system in detail. The Veyron has 10 radiators, with the largest ones taking 15 hours to fabricate. First, the engine’s water pump circulates 10.5 gallons between the block, heads, and 3 radiators up front. The next system that needs to be cooled is the intake manifolds. Each cylinder bank has its own intercooler to relieve the heat generated by the turbos. Of course, the Air Conditioning has a cooler, but it’s not a complex part of the system. The next critical component is the transmission’s cooling circuit. Because the Bugatti Veyron specs include all-wheel drive, the differentials need to stay cool under immense speed requirements. Finally, since you have a few gallons of 60-weight oil lubricating the 64 valves and 16-rod bearings, you will need an engine oil cooler. With all these systems being so close in proximity, there is no room to spare. With no room for error, Bugatti demands precise tolerances from the 3D realm to the finished product. Somehow they are still able to work in a hydraulic system for aerodynamics. This high-pressure circuit includes the front and rear spoilers, along with the ability to drop from 4.9″ to 2.5″ at an instant. Bugatti specs included the front grilles were originally designed in aluminum, but bird impacts would leave the primary radiator susceptible to birds. It was changed to stainless steel at the last minute, prompting Bugatti to mention that any impact would turn the unfortunate animal into “French Fries”. Other wild options are one-carat diamonds on the speedometer and power gauge. Each one is cut with 16 facets for the 16 cylinders behind you. You can’t just bury the accelerator and hope to reach 253 mph. Located behind the driver’s seat is the top-speed lock cylinder. The Top Speed key must be inserted before an attempt. Doing so retracts the spoilers to only 2 degrees, closes the front diffusers, and locks out the steering wheel to only gradual turns. Bugatti Launches Passeport Tranquillité Service Program

Neglect can lead to serious problems for your hypercar, so Bugatti has launched their Passeport Tranquillité service program. Its hard to believe that the Veyron and Chiron are ageing out of their warranties. While a few owners insist on servicing their own cars, the volume of liquids alone is foreboding. Every Bugatti Chiron for sale has almost 10 gallons of coolant and nearly 17 quarts of oil. The transmission and three differentials also have their own cooling loops that must be flushed and filled in unique procedures. A complete Veyron service is akin to refitting a warship after a patrol, necessitating 32 hours of labor every other year. Fourteen hours are required annually, even if the car has not been driven. Therefore, the factory technicians have developed two plans: Active is for owners who routinely exercise their cars and Collector targets cars that don't reach 124 miles annually. It’s already been 15 years since the introduction of the unprecedented Bugatti Veyron 16.4, and the rest of the automotive world is still working to catch up. The Veyron entirely redefined what the world defined as a supercar and what cars could be capable of, and led a march of modern supercars and hypercars that we are still amazed by to this day. Super Sport (2010) The Veyron Super Sport was Buggati’s proof that even five years into holding their top speed record, they weren’t done. With the ability to reach 268 mph, and a new world record, the Veyron Super Sport was yet another milestone in automotive history. Grand Sport L’Or Blanc (2011) Made in collaboration with the Royal Porcelain Factory of Berlin, the L’Or Blanc was a one-off Veyron Grand Sport with a blue and white china-like color scheme in both the exterior and interior, evoking the look of a Chinese Ming vase. Grand Sport Vitesse (2012) After the incredible feat of the Super Sport, Bugatti decided that they wanted to push the limits of a roadster too. 92 of these incredible cars were produced, and they provide their drivers the potential to drive at incredible speeds in a coupe-like cocoon or al fresco. Grand Sport Venet (2012) French artist Bernar Venet was the inspiration for this bespoke Veyron Grand Sport, with an orange and brown color scheme and mathematical livery to celebrate the science of Venet’s work, which continues to the interior as well. "Les Légendes de Bugatti" (2014) Made to celebrate the end of the Veyron’s life cycle, this final edition made sure that the Veyron went out with a bang. Exposed dark blue carbon and satin-polished aluminum panels are the color scheme of the exterior, which is complemented by a chocolate-brown interior.
