McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Cadillac Teases New GTP Prototype That Will Race At Le Ma...

The brand has a presence in IMSA, having won the WeatherTech DPi Manufacturer Championship in 2021. The company is defending its title for 2022 while also looking ahead to more lofty goals. To get there, a new car race car is needed and we're getting a glimpse of that now. Say hello to Project GTP. Partly, anyway. These two teaser photos represent our first look at Cadillac's next race car, utilizing a hybrid system for competition in the new Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) category. The car is being developed by Cadillac Racing and Design, with race car manufacturer Dallara also on board for the project. The luxury brand isn't ready to offer details on the car regarding its powertrain, save that a new Cadillac engine package will fuse with the GTP common hybrid system. That's on the docket for 2023, but before that happens, this fourth-generation Cadillac prototype will make its racing debut at the 2023 Rolex 24 of Daytona to kick off the season. "While the new race car will take into account IMSA and ACO regulations, Cadillac’s brand characteristics will be instantly recognizable, many of which are seen on our V-Series vehicles today," said Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer for Cadillac. "It will artistically combine form and function to influence the development of the forthcoming race car. Elements of Cadillac's brand DNA, such as vertical lighting and floating blades, will be present throughout." Cadillac Teases New Prototype Race Car for IMSA and WEC

Cadillac's racing program will be partnered with Chip Ganassi Racing and Action Express Racing. Cadillac has announced that they will be competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as well as Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) LMDh category with a new vehicle. This is all expected to start in 2023 with a new Cadillac LMDh-V.R prototype that the automaker expects will take them to overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In charge of the new LMDh-V.R are both GM Design and Dallara. This new race car will be powered by the LMDh common hybrid system that will now feature a new Cadillac engine package. While the final bodywork has not been shown, the image up above shows the GM Design sketch of the race car. From the looks of it, GM Design could make the new Cadillac race car the fiercest-looking competitor on the track in 2023. 2023 Cadillac Lyriq Price & Specs Revealed

It comes on the heels of a massive EV investment Upon the ashes of the old Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, GM is building a $2.3 billion battery factory. Their new Ultium batteries are double-stacked to offer big power in the Hummer EV, and now they can be found in the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. For $59,990 you will have 100 kWh, 340 horsepower, 325 lb-ft of torque, and a range of over 300 miles. It looks a tad more classy than Kim Kardashian's Escalade because GM has been working on this project for nearly a decade. Should you need a quick charge, 30 minutes will add 195 miles to the ticker, which should be enough to run a few errands after work. The brakes are massive, with 18" rotors on the rear axle. These are bigger than the wheels on my Cadillac CTS-V, so I see an upgrade in my future. 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Arrives With 668 Horsepower

Last night they unveiled two of the most capable sedans in the history of General Motors, as the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing arrives with 668 horsepower. The most powerful Cadillac ever offered was also revealed alongside the slightly smaller CT4-V Blackwing. Both cars have six-speed manual transmissions, but a 10-speed automatic is optional. Magnetic ride control is found on the world's best cars, but it was Cadillac who developed it. As such, both cars have the 4th generation of the system. Playing their cards close to the chest, the new system won't immediately be available for license by other brands. You will have the option to stop with 16" carbon ceramic brakes, which are helpful since the top speed is over 200 mph. Only stopping for driver changes and fuel, both cars endured relentless testing on the track and on the street. The 6.2-liter V8 is built by hand at the Corvette assembly plant. It has been blessed with rotocast cylinder heads that have 46% better intake flow than the CTS-V. With 659 lb-ft of torque at almost all rpm, the automatic transmission begins priming once the car is unlocked. Little brother CT4-V Blackwing makes use of a twin-turbo 3.6-liter to offer 472 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. With a top speed of 189 mph, it shares the same track-ready electronic differential, carbon brakes, and transmission options. I tried in vain, but launch editions of both cars were offered at 7:30 pm last night, and all 250 examples sold out in 3 minutes. Cadillac Blackwing Reservations Begin February 1

For those that want the latest in American supercars, Cadillac Blackwing reservations begin February 1st. Both the CT4-V and CT5-V Blackwing will be a limited run, with 250 examples of each being offered with sequential VINs. The steering wheel will be numbered with a chassis code then the 3-digit production number. In the teaser, we see 86-001. Cadillac Confirms Manual Transmission Blackwing With 3D-P...

FIRST GENERATION CADILLAC ESCALADE (1999–2000) The 5-door Cadillac Escalade for sale was initially designed to compete with when full-sized luxury-type trucks became popular. It served as Cadillac's first significant foray in the SUV market. The first-generation Escalade was offered from 1999-2000, then skipped in 2001, before it was redesigned for an appearance that was more in line with the Cadillac aesthetic. During that period, Cadillac produced just under 50,000 Escalades. The first-generation Escalade design is often viewed as a rush job as the project went into production less than a year after it was approved. Cadillac Escalades are still manufactured at the Arlington Assembly plant in Arlington, Texas. The very first Escalade to roll off of that assembly line was a 1999 Aspen White model that remains in General Motors’ Heritage Collection. The 5.7-liter Vortec V8 engine in the 1999-2000 Escalade produced 255 horsepower with 350 lb-ft of torque, and they were manufactured with Auto-Trac selectable 4x4 technology. Upon its introduction, the plush, fully-equipped first-generation Escalade prices were set at an MSRP just above $46,000. This added almost $4,000 to the cost of its mechanically similar, corporate cousins. Each first-generation Escalade SUV was available with a five-seat configuration. Subsequent generations came with a third-row of additional seating. They were all well-equipped with a single base-level trim offering and a small handful of possible upgrades. The Escalade came from the factory with 16" chrome-clad aluminum-alloy wheels, matching front and rear bumpers, side panels, and OnStar communications. Standard equipment also included premium stereo equipment, including AM/FM cassette radio. A remote-mounted CD changer and six-speaker Bose premium amplified sound system pushed the envelope, including features that made the Escalade worthy of the Cadillac badge. The interior was upholstered in luxury leather with embossed logos on each of the front captain chairs. These fully automatic chairs included a driver’s memory system for ease of use. To round out the sleek interior, Cadillac added wood interior trim accents complemented by a leather-and-wood-wrapped steering wheel, topped off with the elegant Cadillac crest in the middle and climate control buttons built-in. Keyless entry and sophisticated tri-zone climate control were part of the standard features. The Escalade also came with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass and temperature gauge, an overhead console, rear climate control vents, and automatic front head and fog lamps. They came with roof rails perfect for adding the optional roof rack, too, if additional space was required. There are a few external distinctions that differentiate the first-generation Escalade from the Yukon. Upon close inspection, the two cars have different front fascia, offering a subtly more elegant curve to the Escalade. Additionally, the Escalade prominently wears the Cadillac crest on the front grille, front doors, and rear tailgates. Without those small modifications, it’s difficult to tell them apart from each other. This decision to postpone a newer model allowed Cadillac to craft the version that many think of when they mention "an old Escalade." This generation of Escalades shares the updated GMT820 platform. The Escalade was the last of GM’s full-size truck lines to make the switch to the new chassis. This Escalade was the first to sport a bold, angular exterior design that meshed seamlessly with Cadillac’s brand new “Art and Science” design language that has guided the brand in years since, entirely justifying the delay. Cadillac took advantage of this fresh blank canvas to make a mark with the second-generation after rushing into production with a previous model that primarily served as a placeholder for future enhancement. A further departure from the workhorse Yukons and Suburbans that share the same chassis is evident in the redesigned interior. Like the initial design, Cadillac spared little expense in upgrading the posh cabin. Zebrano wood paneling and several caddy-only leather colors elevated the interior. The new layout now included 8 seats (except for the short wheelbase EXT, or when second-row buckets seats were selected) instead of five as found in previous models. Features like a Bulgari-branded analog clock catapulted the Escalade to preferred rap video status. Cooled seats, satellite radio, and rear-seat entertainment helped the Escalade solidify its position as the ultimate luxury vehicle, bordering on excess, and sufficiently ahead of its time. Second generation Escalades were in production until 2006. Between 2002-2006, Escalade horsepower depended on two engines, the 5.3 L LM7 Vortec V8 with 285 and 295 horsepower, then a more substantial 6.0 L Vortec 6000 V-8 engine capable of producing up to 345 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The larger engine was available on all-wheel-drive models, and then on all models after 2005. This newer engine placed the Escalade near the top of its class, fit for squarely competing in a category of luxury-bent SUVs that was starting to heat up. 2021 Escalade Unveiled in LA To maneuver that more powerful Escalade, Cadillac opted for an industrial-grade four-speed automatic and an optional full-time four-wheel-drive system. These specs mean that for as elegant as the second-generation Escalade appeared, it was now capable of superior performance. The adaptive suspension was introduced during these model years and resulted in a far more agile Escalade. An 8,000-plus-pound tow rating made the Escalade as functional as it was pretty. The Platinum Edition trim was introduced in 2004, and the second-generation Escalade price was $53,230. This package took the Escalade even closer to the point of excess. An ebony and shale dashboard, heated and cooled cupholders, a moon roof, second and third row monitors, a lowered suspension, 20-inch chrome wheels, and chrome grille were sure to get tongues wagging in case the second-generation Escalade didn't already offer plenty of features to talk about. The exterior has taken on a classic, bold look that downplays the angular design of the previous generation, inviting you in with coke-bottle side curves and smooth glamorous elements that call back to Cadillac’s storied legacy. Cadillac has positioned the Escalade to suit two audiences, sporty and luxury, with five different trim options: Luxury, Premium Luxury, Sport, Premium Luxury Platinum, and Sport Platinum.
