Earlier last month, Drake shocked the music world with the release of his ninth studio album, Iceman, along with two additional albums, Habibti and Maid of Honour. Since securing the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 spots on the Billboard 200, making the Canadian rapper the first artist in history to do so, he’s also made waves in the automotive world for featuring a $50 million Ferrari supercar and hypercar collection as a cameo in his hit music video. As a gift to celebrate an unforgettable moment in music history, Drake was recently presented with a full-scale ice sculpture of Kimi Räikkönen's iconic 2006 McLaren MP4/21 F1 car.
A bit of motorsport background on the meaning behind this, and how it ties one of Formula 1’s most legendary drivers to one of the world’s biggest music artists. For more than two decades, Räikkönen carried the nickname "The Iceman” and was even photographed at the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix sitting in the cockpit of an icy full-scale version of his very own race car. Known for his calm demeanor, dry sense of humor, and unshakable composure both on and off the track, Kimi earned the nickname for rarely showing emotion, no matter the situation.
Delivered directly to the driveway of Drake’s $100 million Toronto mega mansion, spanning more than 50,000 square feet, the McLaren MP4/21 ice sculpture celebrates the Iceman album and brings the motorsport moment back to life. Hand-crafted at full scale using the original MP4/21 CAD files, the sculpture perfectly captures the proportions of the Formula 1 car, albeit without the carbon-fiber bodywork and Mercedes-Benz's naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FO108S V8 powering it. With so many automotive and motorsport ties to his record-breaking multi-album release, you have to wonder what else Drake has up his sleeves, or in his garage.
