McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Now we know what scratches the itch for a two-time Formula One World Drivers’ Champion. For most car lovers, it doesn’t take much to get the heart rate up; anything north of 400 horsepower, a clear stretch of road, and the right soundtrack will do the trick. But what about the drivers who spend their working lives north of 200 mph, braking impossibly late and living on the limit every other weekend? When that level of speed is your day job, it brings up the question: what, if anything, still scratches the itch for someone lucky enough to call themselves a Formula 1 driver? Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team driver Fernando Alonso gave us all a peek into what delivers that thrill for him, and it takes shape as Aston Martin’s V12-powered Valiant. Fernando took to Instagram yesterday to share photos of his casual Sunday drive through the hills of Monaco in his $2.5 million limited-production hypercar. The Valiant exists because even Aston Martin understands that some drivers want more than horsepower and modern tech; they want something raw, loud, and visceral. It’s a car built to feel closer to the company’s racing soul, stripping things back and turning the volume up for the kind of drivers, like Fernando Alonso, who still crave a challenge behind the wheel. With only 38 examples built for the world, Alonso’s stands out with a sinister exposed carbon finish that reveals its ultra-lightweight DNA and focus on delivering an unwavering driving experience. One of the most notable characteristics of his configuration has to be the aero-style monoblock wheels, adding a contemporary touch that blends with the body instead of stealing the show. The Instagram post even gave us a look inside where Aston Martin displays its exposed six-speed manual transmission like a work of art in a museum, offering the sounds and feels that check off all the boxes for a truly analog experience. Tim Allen’s 2017 Ford GT Heads to Auction in January 2026

If you’ve ever wanted to own a Ford GT with Hollywood provenance, this may be your chance. This 2017 Ford GT, previously owned by actor/comedian Tim Allen (serial no. H074 and VIN: 2FAGP9CW3HH200074), is heading to Barrett-Jackson’s 2026 Scottsdale auction through Silver Arrow Cars Ltd. One of roughly 1,350 examples built, the car only has 937 original miles on the odometer. Tim took delivery of this GT through Galpin Ford in Los Angeles, one of the country’s top performance dealers. Finished in Ingot Silver with optional gloss carbon-fiber accents and matching 20-inch wheels, it’s fitted with a Heffner titanium exhaust, factory-protected paint film, and blue-finished calipers. Inside, carbon-backed Sparco seats trimmed in Alcantara match the “Dark Energy” theme. The cabin also includes a driver-adjustable pedal box, air conditioning, and a touchscreen infotainment unit, rare civility in such a hardcore machine. Ford engineered the third-generation GT to prove a point. Developed with the Chip Ganassi Racing program that took a class win at Le Mans in 2016, exactly 50 years after the historic win in 1966. It is as close as you can get to a race car with license plates. At its heart lies a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that produces 647 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Mated to a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox, it launches from zero to 60 mph in three seconds and can hit 216 mph flat out. It can generate 1.11 g of lateral grip and stop from 70 mph in just 145 feet. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and lightweight carbon-fiber wheels keep it razor-sharp under pressure. The chassis is a carbon-fiber monocoque built by Multimatic in Canada, complete with FIA-legal roll cage sections hidden in the roof. The hydraulically controlled pushrod suspension tech is straight from endurance racing. The body’s teardrop profile, flying buttresses, and active rear wing manage airflow, cooling, and downforce. The GT sits just 43.7 inches tall, and if you switch into Track Mode, it drops another two inches. When new, Ford handpicked every owner through a private application process. Allen’s inclusion wasn’t a surprise given his racing history and long connection with Ford performance. Tim sold the car in October with 671 miles. The car was subsequently offered for sale by its second owner with 739 miles in 2022. Now, this low-mileage preserved GT with 937 miles is once again hitting the market with full documentation and accessories, and its original exhaust. For those who follow Ford’s history, this car connects decades of heritage from the GT40’s 1966 Le Mans triumph to the GT’s 2016 win. Expect Tim Allen’s GT to draw intense interest when it crosses the block this January; it’s a rare combination of technology, provenance, and American racing heritage. The Rat Rod Supra makes its return to McFarland Racing. While modern-day supercars and hypercars come packed with plenty of power from the factory, often sending more than 1,000 horsepower to the wheels, tuning shops and modifiers pride themselves on going head-to-head with expensive exotics in cars a fraction of the price and more than a decade older. The MKIV Toyota Supra remains a cult classic that fits the mold, showcasing a timeless design made famous by the Fast & Furious movie series and an upgradable 2JZ engine platform capable of producing more than 2,000 horsepower. If you're a die-hard Cleetus McFarland fan like I am, then you're probably familiar with the "Rat Rod" Supra that the YouTuber added to his collection almost 2 years ago. And if you need a subtle reminder of Cleetus' ongoing ownership with the JDM icon, the Supra spent much of its life on 2-step or making blistering pulls with friends in the passenger seat. Since then, Cleetus' Rat Rod Supra received some subtle upgrades from Induction Performance to ditch its previous 1,300 horsepower setup for something more special. Delivered on a flatbed sporting the same sun-soaked and faded paint job since its first appearance on the channel, Cleetus and the team wasted no time getting the Supra unloaded to put it to the test. Underneath its unsuspicious appearance lies only what's best described as a dream build for anyone who dreams of owning a Toyota Supra. Its once-factory 3.0L inline-six engine, producing less than 300 crank horsepower, has been bored and stroked to a 3.4L and fitted with a massive single turbo to produce over 1,500 horsepower. But the real surprise comes when you open the door to an almost pristine, factory interior where a massive carbon sequential transmission shifter replaces the stock 6-speed. Add in a gear gauge, rolling anti-lag, and multiple power settings, and you've got an 8-second street car in disguise. While a full breakdown of the build and some rowdy parking lot 2-step checks entertained the guys for the first few minutes, it was only moments before Cleetus and George had the Supra out on the street, testing out the sequential transmission and the ingenious rev-matching achieved by the team at Induction Performance. That's a $10+ million photo right there! Throughout its illustrious history as one of the most recognized manufacturers in the world, Ferrari has dreamed up and created some of the most legendary and celebrated supercars ever. From early Ferrari icons like the 250 GTO to modern marvels like the all-new F80, the Italian marque portions its busy production schedule for ultra-exclusive models bought by VIP clients. And while you may think that anyone with the means to afford one of these cars is given the opportunity to own them, Ferrari actually hand-selects limited-production model owners based on factors such as brand awareness, spending history, and, of course, what currently lies in the collection. For soccer phenomenon Zlatan Ibrahimović and his fleet of Italian prancing horses, he proves to be the perfect candidate for Ferrari's best of the best. Zlatan Ibrahimović is making waves on social media after recently sharing a photo on Instagram of himself posing on top of his Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari LaFerrari. The $10+ million photo comes just after spending some time in the Ferrari F80 design studio with Design Director Flavio Manzoni, a future glimpse at the next Italian hypercar to join the stable of Ferraris. Zlatan's Ferrari Enzo, named and engineered as an homage to the brand's founder, comes finished in a traditional Rosso Corsa finish and has skyrocketed in value well past the $5 million mark. As for the coveted Ferrari LaFerrari, and its status as one of the 'Holy Trinity' hybrid hypercars, it sports a vibrant Giallo Modena finish and also joins the Enzo as a seven-figure model that continues to appreciate by the day. While we may never actually know every car in Zlatan's collection, it's examples like his Daytona SP3, LaFerrari, Enzo, Monza SP2, and 812 Competizione A that make him a super-qualified buyer for Ferrari's most exclusive cars. And until the future delivery day of his upcoming F80 hypercar, Zlatan Ibrahimović will have to keep himself occupied with one of the many limited-production Ferrari supercars and hypercars in his garage. This new film puts the star in Polestar. Making good thus far on an ambitious promise to unveil five new production models in as many years once the manufacturer was established at the turn of this decade, Polestar has been rapidly growing as an EV marque with a sedan available, as well as a SUV, an SUV coupe, and a grand tourer in the form of the Polestar 5, whose production spec was very recently unveiled. Earlier this week, Federer was joined at the event by former professional tennis player and current Laver Cup captain Yannick Noah and San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie, and several prominent figures from the Bay Area, who cut the ribbon alongside children from local tennis programs. Joe Rogan adds another classic Porsche to his collection. Whether you're an A-list celebrity with a collection or the average Joe with enough garage space for a weekend canyon cruiser, everyone is fascinated by specific brands and models and how they fuel their automotive obsessions. For many, Porsche seems to be the common choice to fill that void in their life, specifically the 911 and its timeless styling, driver-centric DNA, and motorsport-inspired performance. One of Porsche's biggest fans actually happens to be a Joe, not an average Joe, but world-renowned American podcaster, actor, comedian, and former UFC commentator and television host, Joe Rogan. He's now making waves in the automotive world after recently collaborating on an Instagram post with The RSR Project, showcasing his brand-new Porsche 911 build. @kieranbuttrick Joining a diverse fleet that reflects Rogan's taste in everything from high-horsepower trucks to nut-and-bolt muscle car restorations, The RSR Project 911, named Silver 2, will reside next to other Porsches like his SharkWerks 997 911 GT3 RS, Porsche 964 911 RS America, and 993 Gunther Werks 911. Silver 2 Build features a stunning gloss silver finish that gives off the appearance of natural, bare metal perfectly sculpted into Porsche's iconic 911 silhouette. Starting with a 3.2 Carrera as the donor, the shell is transformed with steel flares, fiberglass panels, and fresh paint to capture the original RSR profile. From there, the mechanics get a full refresh, with rebuilt engines and transmissions, upgraded suspension, new brakes, and wheels that stay true to the iconic 2.8 RSR look. Every detail is done in-house, every step held to the same high standard, and the result is a car that looks, feels, and drives like the RSR dream, but built for real miles, not just showroom shine. While many of the world's greatest car collections live behind closed doors, only surfacing for rare appearances at prestigious concours events, others are constantly in the spotlight. In the case of A-list celebrities and world-renowned athletes, their garages are often just as famous as they are. With a global fanbase and more than 84.5 million followers on social media following his success on and off the soccer pitch, it's no surprise that the automotive world has uncovered Zlatan Ibrahimović's collection, and more specifically, his love for all things Ferrari. Ibrahimović recently shared a post on Instagram at Ferrari's design studio with none other than the man behind sculpting Maranello's modern marvels, Ferrari Design Director, Flavio Manzoni. Already accumulating an impressive collection of limited-production Ferrari supercars and hypercars, Zlatan's lineup currently features a recent SF90 XX Stradale, a Ferrari Purosangue, a Daytona SP3, a 812 Competizione A, a Monza SP2, and an SF90 Spider. Naturally progressing up the ranks of Ferrari's VIP owner list, the all-new 1,200-horsepower F80 is next in sight for the 43-year-old soccer sensation. And while we cannot speculate that spec'ing a Ferrari F80 was the reason for his meeting with Flavio, it is worth noting that Zlatan received a hand-drawn Ferrari F80 configuration sketch in a room surrounded by colors, materials, and other visual aids.
