DeLorean Announces New Electric Flying Car Racing Team
Whether you see it as a unique-looking sports car with an infamous backstory or an automotive Hollywood icon, the DeLorean DMC-12 is impossible to ignore. Its metallic body and gullwing doors gave it captivating visuals, and its presence in pop culture cemented its status as one of the most important American sports car nameplates. However, DeLorean Motor Company has returned to the forefront of news, and this time, it’s with a flying car. DeLorean has just announced at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 that it will be entering the Airspeeder International Series, the world’s first electric flying car racing series, debuting in November 2026 as the 2026-2027 season of the series begins. As the constructor of the United States Airspeeder team, DeLorean is the first American constructor in the series, and the venture brings an American automotive icon to the sky. Airspeeder aims to develop electric flying car technology through the intense pressure and competitive nature of the racing world, using advanced flight control and AI-enabled safety systems to facilitate three-dimensional racing in the air. The series was founded by Matt Pearson, who said of DeLorean’s participation, “DeLorean is the original flying car brand. Long before anyone had built one, the whole world already knew what a flying DeLorean looked like. Every great racing series is defined by the constructors who choose to compete in it. To have an American icon line up on our grid in our first international season tells you where this sport is going. America has repeatedly changed how the world moves, on the road, in the air and beyond, and the DeLorean Airspeeder Team carries that ambition into a new arena.” <- gallery -> In the first international season of the series, teams will race eVTOL aircraft through electronically defined courses, and in DeLorean’s case, the team will race the Airspeeder Mk3C, with the automotive brand defining the flying car’s design identity. After this coming season, the upcoming DeLorean Airspeeder will be a result of collaboration with student engineering teams at UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech. Bringing an iconic American automotive name to the sky, DeLorean is joining the racing world in a boldly innovative way. View All DeLorean For Sale Image Source: Airspeeder
