McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Multi-Award Winning Custom 1966 Chevrolet Suburban Hits the Digital Block on duPont REGISTRY Live

Beyond the record-breaking seven-figure sales on duPont REGISTRY Live, a steady stream of highly desirable restomod consignments has been making a wave on the platform over the past month, and this multi-award-winning build currently on the digital block certainly takes the cake. This is a 1966 Chevrolet Suburban dubbed “Lime Crush,” a fully realized custom build by The Roadster Shop. duPont REGISTRY Live Hits Record $8.6M Week as Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Leads Results

Another record-setting week has pushed duPont REGISTRY Live into new territory. Between April 13 and April 18, the platform recorded 21 cars sold, generating $8,645,582 in total sales, its strongest weekly performance to date. In recent weeks, duPont REGISTRY Live has recorded total weekly sales figures of $2.6 million, $4.3 million, and $6.5 million, making this latest result a clear continuation of that upward trajectory. Since launch in November 2025, total volume now stands at 239 cars sold, with momentum increasingly concentrated at the very top end of the market. Lots Closed: Highlights Leading the charge was a 2022 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, 1-of-60 produced, which achieved $3,792,600. As only the third Bugatti ever to sell on the platform, the result reinforces growing confidence in transacting multi-million dollar hypercars online. Configured in exposed Grey Carbon and Blanc with a Tangerine interior, and equipped with over $370,000 in factory options, the Pur Sport represents the most driver-focused iteration of the Chiron family, and its performance here sets a new benchmark for modern hypercars on dR Live, second only to another Chiron Sport, the Jaune Mosheim-spec example that brought in $4,012,050 in January. Mercedes-Benz delivered one of its strongest collective performances to date, with five cars sold. Leading the group was a 1-of-99 2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet, which brought $820,050, highlighting renewed interest in ultra-limited, high-concept luxury builds. This is the second G650 Landaulet to cross the digital block on dR Live. We recently spotlighted this open-top bodystyle and how Maybach should consider bringing back. That momentum extended across the Maybach lineup, including a 2023 S680 Maybach that achieved $294,525, while a 2012 SLS AMG closed at $280,875, reinforcing sustained demand for both modern luxury flagships and early AMG halo cars. Porsche maintained its position as a consistent pillar of the platform, also recording five sales. A 2008 RUF RGT, 1-of-14 built and the only Chromaflash example in the United States, led the group at $644,607. Originally configured for the former Samsung chairman, Mr.Lee, the car highlights the continued premium placed on provenance-driven, low-production RUF builds. Additional strength came from modern 992.1-generation cars, including a GT3 Touring and a Turbo S Cabriolet, both of which crossed the $300,000 mark. Ferrari’s presence was more selective but still notable. A 2024 Ferrari 296 GTB finished in Azzurro La Plata achieved $345,975, a color with deep historical ties to Argentina’s racing heritage and five-time Formula 1 World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio. Alongside it, a 2017 Ferrari 488 GTB equipped with a Liberty Walk widebody kit sold for $257,775, marking the first example of its kind to appear on the platform. Elsewhere, performance diversity remained a defining theme. A 2006 Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster achieved $307,650, while two Chevrolet Corvettes, a 2024 C8 Z06 3LZ at $106,475 and a low-mileage 2013 C7 ZR1 at $96,600, reinforced continued interest in American performance across generations. At the enthusiast end, a 2001 Hummer H1 brought $48,300, while restomod demand held steady, led by a 1965 Chevrolet C10 LS swap at $100,275 and a 1953 Studebaker Hawk at $31,500. Lamborghini continues to lean into its V12 heritage, including a highly sought-after factory manual Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4, 1-of-26 produced and previously owned by YouTuber DDE, closing tomorrow, with the current bid sitting at $413,000. Further down the docket, variety continues to define the platform. A 2023 McLaren GT finished in MSO Volcano Yellow is currently bidding at $70,000. Restomods remain a major force. Leading the group is a 1966 Chevrolet Suburban “Lime Crush,” a no-expense-spared build by The Roadster Shop, originally commissioned for Mr. Gasket’s anniversary and unveiled at the 2013 SEMA Show. With over $550,000 invested and powered by a GM ZZ502 big-block V8, it represents the upper tier of custom builds now finding traction on the platform. Four Collector-Grade Porsches on duPont REGISTRY Live You Can't Ignore

The online auction landscape continues to tighten, and duPont REGISTRY LIVE has doubled down on a model built around transparency and execution. A 14-day return policy and a 100 percent sell-through rate remain central to our approach. Since launching in mid-November 2025, the platform has now recorded 227 cars sold. Within that momentum, Porsche has emerged as the defining force, accounting for well over 30 percent of all transactions, with 74 cars sold to date. Three of those have crossed the seven-figure threshold, including last week’s 1-of-2 RUF Ultimate Bluebird $1,317,750 sale, reinforcing the platform’s role as a primary destination for high-value Porsche consignments. For collectors tracking rarity, provenance, and specification, the platform has quickly become a focal point. Handbuilt in Huntington Beach, California, this Speedster represents the most extreme open-top expression of the Gunther Werks 993 program. Purists are well aware that Porsche never fully pursued an open-top version of the 993, and this example by GW has been developed to modern engineering and performance standards. View Listing 2008 RUF RGT 1-of-14 Finally, we have a 2008 RUF RGT, a W09 VIN factory-built example based on the 997 GT3 platform. Handbuilt at RUF's HQ in Pffahenhasuen in Bavaria, Southern Germany, this car spent most of its life in Japan. Finished in a distinctive Chromaflash Hologram Silver over a blue leather interior, it is one of just 14 RGTs ever produced; the car seen here is the only known example in the United States specified in this finish. With 19,070 miles, the car retains its original Mezger-based 3.8-liter flat-six, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Originally commissioned for the former Chairman of Samsung, Mr. Lee, and accompanied by its original RUF Zertifikat along with service records and factory documentation, this example combines provenance with engineering credibility. 1-of-2 RUF Ultimate Bluebird Hits $1.3M as duPont REGISTRY Live Surpasses $6.5M Week

duPont REGISTRY Live continues to build momentum, delivering its strongest performance to date with 21 cars sold between April 6 and April 11, generating $6,537,929 in total sales. The result marks a significant jump from the previous week’s $4.3 million and pushes total platform volume to 218 cars sold since launch in November 2025. More importantly, it signals growing confidence at the very top end of the market, where rare, low-production cars are beginning to define headline results. Lots Closed: Highlights Leading the week was the extremely rare 1992 RUF Ultimate dubbed “Bluebird,” which is one of just two examples built, which achieved $1,317,750. While RUF operates as an independent manufacturer, this result effectively sets a new benchmark for Porsche-based cars on the platform (the third most expensive car sold on dR Live to date), reinforcing the strength of ultra-low-volume, analog performance machines with clear provenance. That momentum extended across the broader RUF lineup. A 1996 RUF Turbo R brought $368,550, while a 1984 RUF BTR Slantnose achieved $236,250. Taken together, these results point to sustained demand for RUF’s interpretation of Porsche performance, where rarity, mechanical purity, and period-correct modifications continue to command a premium. That figure nearly doubles the previous week’s $2.6 million, signaling a sharp uptick in both transaction value and top-end activity. Since its launch in November 2025, the platform has now moved 197 cars, continuing its rapid expansion as a serious digital marketplace for collector-grade automobiles and more. Lots Closed: Highlights It was Ferrari that set the tone this week. Four cars from Maranello crossed the digital block, led by a highly original 2004 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. 1-of-2 RUF Ultimate "Bluebird" Listed on duPont REGISTRY Live

It is not often that a pattern begins to form around a name as elusive asRUF, and yet, in recent weeks, duPont REGISTRY Live has done just that. The platform recently recorded the sale of a 2001 RUF RGT, one of 17 examples, which closed at $295,575 in late February. Before that, a 1996 Porsche 911 RUF Turbo R, showing roughly 55,000 miles, sold for $337,050 back in January. Both those cars were factory-built RUFs with documented lineage and a defined place within the company’s production history; this latest example to be listed on dR Live is even rarer. This is the RUF Ultimate based around the (Type 964) 1992 Porsche. People in Porsche circles recognize the RUF CTR Yellowbird. The car seen here is dubbed “Bluebird” and was completed in 2022. Originally commissioned by a close friend of Alois Ruf, it is one of just two ever built and is the only known RUF finished in a blue-on-blue configuration, a one-off paint to Sample exterior over a Nachtblau leather interior. Handcrafted in Pfaffenhausen, in southern Germany, its mechanics mirror the original Ultimate prototype introduced in 2016. It retains identical engine and gearbox specifications. Power comes from a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged, air-cooled flat-six that delivers 580 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, and it pairs with a six-speed manual and Rear Wheel Drive. This example uses a wide-body steel conversion, with carbon-fiber doors and a carbon-fiber hood. With a curb weight under 2,650 pounds, it can hit 62 mph in under three seconds and top 211 mph. Showing just 3,032 original miles, the car carries a Porsche-sourced WP0 VIN. One explanation suggests it may have enabled the creation of a second Ultimate after the original prototype had already been positioned as a one-off.
