McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. duPont REGISTRY heads to The Quail with Luxury Rally Club, BRABUS, and the BODO

There are a handful of days during Monterey Car Week that everyone circles in advance, and Friday belongs to The Quail. Now in its 23rd year, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering fills the greens at Quail Lodge & Golf Club with a few hundred of the most significant cars and motorcycles anyone will see all year, plus a dozen or more world debuts from manufacturers who save their best announcements for exactly this lawn. duPont REGISTRY will be at The Quail on Friday, August 14, alongside Luxury Rally Club, with an activation sponsored by BRABUS. In attendance will also be the BRABUS BODO, the car on the cover of our August 2026 issue. If you have been following the group this summer, the pairing makes sense. duPont REGISTRY Group announced a strategic investment in Luxury Rally Club in July, bringing Trevor Johnson's operation into an ecosystem that already includes Canossa Events, Cavallino, Supercar Owners Circle, Petrolicious, Elferspot, and Rétromobile New York. LRC has spent years building a reputation for Monterey programming that runs on relationships rather than volume, from the Preserve Concours & Cocktails on Thursday to the quieter gatherings that never make a schedule. BRABUS built its name on Mercedes, on quiet-looking sedans with absurd numbers hiding under the hood, and the BODO is the company stepping out from behind that reputation entirely. It is a coachbuilt 2+2 grand tourer, over five meters long, wearing a carbon fiber body laid up in pre-preg and wrapped around the aluminum monocoque of an Aston Martin Vanquish. The profile is the part that gets you. Low, long, dropping away at the tail into something close to a boat tail, with a pop-up spoiler and active aero doing the work that a fixed wing would have ruined. The face is all BRABUS, with matrix LED headlights flanking a grille carrying thirteen vertical slats and a pair of RAM-AIR ducts feeding the engine. That engine is a hand-built 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 making 1,000 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque. BRABUS quotes 3.0 seconds to 62 mph, 186 mph in 23.9 seconds, and a top speed limited to 223 mph. The numbers are impressive on paper and slightly beside the point in person, because what the BODO is really selling is the idea that a company can still build a front-engine V12 GT from scratch in 2026 and mean it. Bodo Buschmann founded BRABUS in Bottrop in 1977 and spent decades wanting to build a car that answered to nobody else's model range. His son Constantin, now running the company, finished the job. Production is capped at 77 cars, one for each year since the founding, each one specified individually by its buyer, with pricing starting north of a million euros before VAT. The BODO made its public debut at FuoriConcorso on Lake Como in May, and seeing one in the United States is going to stay a rare thing for a while. The Quail runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, at Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel Valley. Featured classes this year cover the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the Lamborghini Diablo, the legacy of Japanese GTs, and the Ferrari F40, and Broad Arrow is running a two-day auction on the property on the 13th and 14th. Concorso Italiano Celebrates 41 Years With Most Ambitious Event Yet

Forty-one years in, the field spread across the fairways at Bayonet Black Horse still does the thing no reboot or rebrand can fake. It makes you stop walking and stare. This year Concorso Italiano adds something the regulars have not seen before, and it goes beyond the cars. We will get to that. First, the field itself, because it is still the reason everyone drives up the coast. Walk the grass, and you get the full sweep of Italian design in one afternoon. Alfa Romeo and Ferrari anchor it, the way they always have. Lamborghini and Maserati bring the theater. Then come the marques that reward the people who really know their stuff: Lancia, De Tomaso, Bizzarrini, Iso, Abarth, and FIAT, sitting shoulder to shoulder with prewar rarities and cars that rolled off the line last year. As far as standout Italian models/cars go, there will also be the Ferrari Enzo, Totem “LITORALE BRADO” and much more. That range is the point. You can stand in front of a hand-built coupe from the 1950s, turn around, and be looking at a modern supercar, and both belong. Global Exotics returns too, the corner of the field reserved for the standout machines, and this year it brings real occasions: a reimagined Porsche from the 1950s called the TraumWagen, and the US debut of the Donkervoort P24 RS. Here is the part longtime attendees will notice. The 2026 edition carries the official patronage of the Automotoclub Storico Italiano, with ASI and FIVA President Alberto Scuro offering remarks, and Italy's presence goes right to the top. Massimo Carnelos, Consul General of Italy in San Francisco, and Davide Corriero, Deputy Consul General, will join the celebration, a reminder that Concorso has become a real bridge between Italy's automotive heritage and the collectors who gather for it each August. The honorees match the occasion. Donald Osborne receives the La Bella Macchina Award, presented by former Chairman Tom McDowell and past recipient Monica Zanetti, known as Lady F40 and the first woman to work as a mechanic and coachbuilder for Ferrari, traveling in from Italy for it. Adolfo Orsi receives the Doug Magnon Award, handed over by Andrea Soriani, General Manager of Maserati North America, who will also sit as a guest judge for the marque. And Valentino Balboni, Lamborghini's legendary chief test driver, returns to present his namesake award, this year a handcrafted trophy made by an Italian artist to mark the 60th anniversary of the Miura. Ask anyone who has been coming for twenty or thirty years why they still make the trip, and the cars are rarely the first thing they mention. They talk about the people. The friend they only see on this one Saturday each August. The restorer they have watched grow from a kid with a project to a craftsman with a waiting list. That is the quiet thing Concorso has always gotten right, and it is worth protecting as the show grows. The 2026 program leans into it. The Rev Institute joins the show with archival pieces on display, a reminder that preserving these stories matters as much as showing the cars off. The field carries real restoration weight too, with cars brought back over ten years or more of patient work. One is a 1959 Maserati 3500 GT Bertone returned to original specification in partnership with Adolfo Orsi and his archival records, a car that has already earned Best of Show at the 2024 Audrain Newport Concours d'Elegance and a Grand Sport Trophy at the 2025 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. And the day stays family-friendly, with a fire truck on hand from local nonprofit partner Mid Coast Fire Brigade and the Festa Italia Queen's Court adding to the atmosphere, the kind of thing that hooks the next generation the way a lot of today's regulars first got started. On the judging side, the marque classes are decided by a field of judges whose experience runs deep, more than 250 years of it between them, with two women joining this year to judge Ferrari and the FIAT, Abarth, and Lancia group. Class winners are the cars in contention for Best in Show, so the top prize is earned on the field rather than handed out. The Chairman's Award raises the bar again. To even compete for it this year, a car has to have already taken Best in Show in a previous year, which turns it into past champions against past champions. Around those headline honors sit the specialty awards. Meguiar's Best Finish returns, and three additions stand out this year: the Duetto Award presented by Pininfarina CEO, Paolo Dellacha; the ASI Trophy for the best-preserved postwar Italian car, and the Piston Foundation Next Generation Award, chosen by students as part of a new partnership aimed at supporting the next wave of talent in the industry. There is real weight behind every ribbon that gets handed out. There is a way to do the day in more comfort, too. This is not a concours where a docent shoos you off the grass. It's six hours built around cars, with music, food, and a fairground lit up for the occasion. The Cars Start with the range, because that's the whole idea. Rare builds and iconic machines share the grounds with custom culture, a JDM section, Mecum's classics and muscle cars, and an off-road corner anchored by the Russell Baja 911 and the street-legal Scarbo Hyper Truck. One night, all cars, and they mean it. Kimera Automobili is the 2026 featured marque, and it's using the night to pull the covers off the K-39 Stradale and its race counterpart, with founder Luca Betti presenting live. If the name doesn't land right away, the back catalog will. Kimera is the small Italian outfit that turned the Lancia 037 into the EVO37, a Group B homage. Having them headline the reveals sets the tone. Totem Automobili keeps the reveals rolling, with founder Riccardo Quaggio taking the stage to unveil new work from the Italian electric-restomod brand. On the guest side, Lamborghini legend Valentino Balboni is back for 2026, and NASCAR's Jesse Iwuji joins him. More reveals are coming that the organizers haven't announced yet, which is half the fun of getting there early. The cars don't just sit there, either. The Family Fun Zone is expanded for 2026, with racing simulators and free admission for kids 12 and under. Bring the family. It's built to be kid-friendly and automotive enthusiast-friendly at the same time, which is harder to pull off than it sounds, but Monterey Motorsports Festival makes it happen in very entertaining fashion. Dispatches From Goodwood, Part I: Where Past Powers the Future

The Goodwood Festival of Speed returned to southern England this past weekend for another gathering of the world’s greatest cars from every era of motorsport. Despite scalding weather that bordered on torturously hot, the scene and setting on the property of the 11th Duke of Richmond still drew dense crowds eager to take in an unbelievable show featuring everything from the earliest horseless carriages to 1960s racing legends, Group B rally cars, modern electrics, and even motorcycles from every era. Without a doubt, Goodwood FOS has transformed into one of – if not the – best motoring events in the world, highlighted by a hillclimb held right on site that keeps the paddock abuzz all weekend long. A timed shootout dictates that so much rolling automotive art needs to actually run well enough to race, all surrounded by centuries-old castle grounds dotted by displays and hospitality stands chock full of familiar and novel makes and models, many of which will never even reach the United States. This year the combination of retro and modern aesthetics and performance coalesced more than ever into a unifying theme. Arguably the biggest name in the “restomod” industry, Singer, took the firm’s reimagined 911 sports cars a step further by mounting three on a sky-high statue reminiscent of the Gateway Arch in St Louis. But a series of modern recreations also revealed a burgeoning trend for enthusiasts who crave a renewed sense of analog delights whether racing up a hill, canyon carving on the weekend, or venturing out to the racetrack for some more hardcore fare. McLaren M6GT Fittingly, McLaren rolled out two new projects to display at Goodwood. Firstly, the 788HS debuted as the pinnacle of performance for the 750S platform, and as limited to only 200 units (all already sold) will somehow wind up more exclusive than the W1 hypercar. But the British racing giant also brought along a fun project, the M6GT. This historically relevant recreation of a prototype car harks back to Bruce McLaren’s first dream of a production model. In this case, McLaren began work on a period-correct race car just seven months prior, using historic drawings and a set of “barn find” original body panels sourced from Specialised Mouldings. A small-block Chevy V8 with 48-millimeter Weber carburetors links to a ZF five-speed dog box, though the build required fully new fuel tanks and a custom wiring harness. All told, the running and driving car reportedly required 4,000 labor hours to bring to life, though McLaren decided against entering it in the hillclimb. Instead, the M6GT will stay in the company’s private collection—though theoretically, could be one day made road-legal or may even inspire a line of continuation cars if customer response proves positive enough. Bizzarrini 5300 Aperta Lusso Though McLaren still dominates Formula 1 racing, defunct manufacturer Bizzarrini returns to life this year with the 5300 Aperta Lusso that arrived at Goodwood ready to run. The design carries on the Italian firm’s original low-slung sports car, albeit with body panels out of carbon fiber, carburetors replaced with fuel injection, and a host of additional modern creature comforts. The concept from Bizzarrini appears to involve using the most advanced current technology to transform a vintage car into something absolutely prepared for daily driving – this exact example will wind up in Italy but recently finished an extensive shakedown run in Italy before coming out to Goodwood where driving for hours on end in the hot sun presented zero issues. Bizzarrini eventually plans to build just 10 Aperta Lussos before focusing on a federally compliant car for sale in the United States, while a naturally aspirated V12 developed entirely in-house also fits into the mix. Nichols N1A As typical at a British automotive event, the influence of McLaren over many decades pervaded Goodwood. Case in point, the Nichols N1A fashioned by Steve Nichols, who designed the original McLaren MP4/4. Today, the N1A takes lightweight performance to another level in the form of a tiny sports car weighing just 895 kilograms (1,973 pounds) but powered by a massive 427ci V8 built with custom throttle bodies and capable of pumping out an absurd 720 horsepower. A gated six-speed manual gearshifter to the right of the right-hand driver’s seat features a replica of the shifter knob that Ayrton Senna apparently twisted off his MP4/4 after winning Monaco in 1988. Hydraulic power steering may not be necessary in something so tiny, but Nichols will option it regardless. And this analog featherweight can also come with air conditioning, features a front-axle lift system, with carbon brakes and wheels. Nichols calls the N1A a “supercar” but in reality, a super driver will need to slide into the tiny cockpit to truly unleash every ounce of performance from something so radical. RUF B8 “Erprober” Not every car at Goodwood perfectly straddled the divide between vintage and modern, though the line always blurs while discussing RUF Automobile. This year, Ruf arrived with a fun prototype engine that traces back to Porsche’s own 908 race car, albeit slipped into a new chassis, as well. Driver Tanner Foust spent the weekend trying to tame the twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter Boxer eight racing up the hill, with a rasping soundtrack and almost overwhelming turbo whine hinting at the claimed 1,000 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque on tap. The new powerplant required lengthening the chassis of a RUF CTR3 test unit by 100 millimeters (3.93 inches). But even if the B8 “Erprober” (for “tester”) generally resembles a Boxster or Cayman, the entirely ground-up chassis from Ruf proves just how far a dedication to all-out performance goes with the right budget. Porsche never built a flat-eight for a production road car, and the 908’s engine was naturally aspirated only during the late-1960s before wrapping up competition in 1971. So, if RUF decides to actually slip the B8 into a new model, these three days showing at Goodwood may wind up as a somewhat historically significant moment in and of themselves. 10 Fastest Cars At The 2026 Goodwood Festival Of Speed

The 33rd Goodwood Festival of Speed ran Thursday through Sunday (July 9-12) at the Duke of Richmond's West Sussex estate, this year themed around motorsport's great rivalries. Ducati marked its centenary with a Thursday balcony moment, Singer headlined the Central Feature, and Red Bull brought the RB17 hypercar for its dynamic debut on the hill, with Adrian Newey among those driving it. Damon Hill closed the weekend on Sunday with a balcony moment of his own, celebrating 30 years since his 1996 Formula 1 World Championship. But as always, the weekend's real answer key arrived on Sunday afternoon, when the Timed Shoot-Out sent its ten qualifiers back up the hill in search of outright bragging rights. The Shoot-Out Sunday's final ran in intense heat on an increasingly dusty course. Jake Hill was first to threaten the sharp end, taking his Nissan 300ZX Turbo to a 48.48, before a red flag interrupted the session when Johnny Cecotto's BMW M3 DTM E92 crashed into the barriers at Molecomb. No one was hurt, and once running resumed, the order shuffled hard: Travis Pastrana's Subaru-based Brataroo 9500 Turbo, with its active aero that tucks its rear wing out of the way of the barriers, displaced Hill's Nissan, before Johan Kristoffersson answered in the Volkswagen Polo WRX with two wheels on the grass out of the first corner for a dramatic 46.31. Alex Summers, in the sole entrant of the Sports Racers class, a 1974 Shadow DN4, edged past by the barest of margins to take provisional top spot at 46.30. None of it mattered once the two electric entries closed the session. Dan Ticktum, in the newly launched Formula E Gen4, went first and set a 42.46 for Romain Dumas to beat. Dumas, a four-time Shoot-Out winner heading into the weekend campaigning Ford's electric Super Mustang Mach-E, answered by taking his Ford to the top of the hill in 41.97 seconds, sealing his fifth Shoot-Out victory and his third in a row.
