McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Ferrari Dominates Mecum Kissimmee 2026 With A $38.5 Million 250 GTO and Bachman Collection

We expected plenty of action from Mecum’s Kissimmee 2026 auction, and even with one full day of bidding still to come, the sale has already delivered historic results. Between January 6 and January 17, multiple eight-figure sales were firmly on the board, led by a $38.5 million Ferrari 250 GTO, a result that places it among the most expensive cars sold at auction and positions Kissimmee 2026 as one of the most consequential auctions in Mecum history. Ferrari’s dominance at the top of the leaderboard has been unmistakable. The undisputed headline lot, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO finished in Bianco Speciale, crossed the block at $38.5 million, with the top bid placed by noted Ferrari collector David Lee. We highlighted Chassis 3729GT in October last year, as the only 250 GTO finished in white by Ferrari. With a period competition history that includes drivers such as Graham Hill, Mike Parkes, and Roy Salvadori, the result reinforced the premium placed on originality, provenance, and preservation at the highest level. Beyond the GTO, the Bachman Collection emerged as the dominant force across the remainder of the top ten so far. We highlighted the breadth of this collection in late December, followed by a deep dive into its ultra-low-mileage Ferrari F40s ahead of Kissimmee. The strongest Bachman result came from a 2003 Ferrari Enzo showing just 649 miles, ordered new by the family and customized through the factory, saw fierce bidding, eventually selling for $17.875 million. That was followed closely by a 1995 Ferrari F50 with only 252 miles at $12.21 million, reinforcing demand for Ferrari’s flagship V12 era cars when mileage and provenance align. Modern halo Ferraris continued to post blue-chip numbers. The only Ferrari Enzo finished in Rosso Dino brought $11.11 million, while a 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta with just 96 miles sold for $11 million. The Bachman Collection also accounted for an $8.525 million Rosso Corsa 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, a 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari with 157 miles on the clock, as well as the final U.S.-spec LaFerrari produced at $6.71 million, a 458-mile 1992 Ferrari F40 at $6.6 million, and a Giallo-finished 2006 Ferrari FXX at $6.325 million. Ford’s GT40 lineage provided the lone non-Ferrari interruption at the top. A 1966 Ford GT40 MkII factory lightweight, chassis XGT-3 and one of just three produced, sold for $12.375 million, representing one of the most original MkII examples in existence. Another record sale on Friday was a 1-of-1 PTS Porsche 918 Spyder that crossed the block at $6.05 million. As previously mentioned, with one full day of bidding still ahead, Mecum Kissimmee 2026 is not finished writing its story. But even before the final gavel falls, Ferrari’s dominance, led overwhelmingly by the 48-strong Bachman Collection, has already defined this auction. RM Sotheby's Hershey Auction Posts $12.9 Milion In Results

RM Sotheby's has just wrapped up their 15th annual Hershey auction at the Hershey Lodge during the Antique Automobile Club of America’s (AACA) Eastern Division Fall Meet and has posted some incredible results. During the two-day event, the auction accomplished $12,984,210 in sales and had an incredible sell-through rate of 98 percent. Classic and historic cars were the focus of this auction, and the top ten highest sellers are a clear picture of this. In fact, if you look at the list down below, the "newest" car in the list of ten is a 1970 Mercedes-Benz and the oldest is a 1904 Winton. The top spot belongs to the extremely rare 1931 Duesenberg Model J Roadster “Green Hornet" that sold for $1,650,000. You can see the entire list down below. RM Sotheby's Records Over $42 Million in Sales at Amelia ...

Classics reined supreme at the RM Sotheby's 2021 Amelia Island event. The much-anticipated RM Sotheby's 2021 Amelia Island event has come and gone, but not without recording incredible numbers. The single-day auction had sales totaling $42,174,340 with a sell-through rate of an astonishing 95.28 percent. The biggest seller was a beautiful 1929 Duesenberg Model J 'Disappearing Top' Torpedo Convertible Coupe by Murphy that's actually one of two built with polished and brushed bare aluminum coachwork and the sole remaining example in existence. 2021 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance Recap

A weekend filled with automotive excellence. The 26th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance took place this past weekend in Amelia Island, Florida with an anticipated crowd in attendance to display some of the world’s most coveted and exclusive automobiles. The automotive action-packed weekend began with cars and coffee events, various auctions from RM Sotheby’s and Bonhams, as well as the Porsche-focused Werks Reunion car show. Throughout the day, continuous news of multi-million dollar vehicles like the 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and 1929 Duesenberg Model J sales electrified the crowd. Along with high-dollar auction sales, Hennessey Performance was on-site to unveil its new Venom F5 hypercar. Although the formal attention of the event was inside the auction room, outside on the streets of Amelia Island, supercars and hypercars of all kinds commuted through the winding backroads. Around the duPont REGISTRY spectator area, spectacular examples from Specialty Vehicle Engineering, Combat Motors, Vanderhall, Overfinch, Hanania Exotics, and Executive Coach Builders. Along with automotive displays, brands like Luxury Lease Partners, Oxford Cigar Co., EPIC Cigars, Medford Knives, and Metron Garage were on-site to highlight their luxury products. Perfectly placed throughout the breathtaking landscape of the Ritz-Carlton were museum-grade examples such as VIN 001 Ferrari F50 represented by the team at CURATED, as well as countless others brought by owners and dealers from all around the world. Period correct apparel and accessories littered the field, giving spectators a close look as to how life was during the times when these vehicles were being rolled off the production floor for the first time. The 2021 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance concluded with a generous award ceremony, giving each winning participant the opportunity to drive their vehicle through the field for all to capture the moment. GAA Classic Car Auction Sets New Sales & Attendance Records

Greensboro is quickly eclipsing many other automotive meccas, because GAA Classic Car Auction set new sales and attendance records. The last weekend in February were marked by bitter cold across the Piedmont, but it didn't stop our friends from selling 94% of consignments. With 650 classics and collectibles, the event exceeded $19 million thanks to several heavy hitters. Held at "The Automobile Palace", over 1,000 bidders fought over a collection of 10 Chryslers from 1959. All from the same collector in Bristol, TN sold for a combined $580,000. The highest bids were for a 2017 Ford GT Heritage Edition that hammered for $1.04 million, the most expensive car in their history. Their YouTube channel received nearly 50,000 views, and it will also be replayed on MAV TV on March 25th at 7pm ET. Presented by RM Sotheby's - On Friday, 22 January, RM Sotheby’s kicked off its 2021 auction calendar with the company’s 22nd annual Arizona auction, held this year at the OTTO Car Club in Scottsdale with limited, by appointment only in-person attendance, achieving $35,065,900 in total sales with 90 percent of all lots finding new homes. The one-day auction saw bidders from 35 countries around the world bidding in the room and via phone and internet. The undoubted star of the auction was a highly original 1955 Jaguar D-Type with substantial period race history, which sold to a bidder on the phone for a final $6,000,000. Wrapped in Red with an interior trimmed to match, the car was one of a very small number of D-Types to be so finished when new. Purchased new from Bernie Ecclestone by British racer Peter Blond and retaining many of its original components today, the well-documented example goes to its new caretaker as a worthy candidate for vintage competition at the highest and most prestigious levels. 1955 Jaguar D-Type 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corsica The second highest price achieved was an elegant and extremely rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corsica, one of eight examples bodied by the coachbuilder and just two examples in the four-seater configuration, which brought $4,735,000. Retaining its original chassis, engine, gearbox, differential, and body, the Bugatti came to the Arizona auction with known and fascinating ownership history, including time spent in the esteemed collections of Judge North and General Lyon. Additional pre-war classics also brought strong prices, including a CCCA Full Classic 1932 Cadillac V-16 Convertible Coupe by Fisher, one of 14 examples ever built, of which four survive today, and one of only a handful that were built with a factory rear-mounted spare, which surpassed its high estimate and went to a new home for $1,022,500; and a multi-award winning, CCCA Full Classic 1933 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Sedan by Dietrich, one of two extant and a completely numbers-matching example, which brought in $819,000. Top sales were also highlighted by several modern supercars, including a 2020 McLaren Speedtail, the first example of the marque’s most technologically advanced and fastest road car to sell at public auction. A masterpiece of automotive engineering with central driving position and three-seat configuration, the car was one of only 106 examples produced, paying tribute to the 106 McLaren F1s. Highly optioned by MSO and showing only 30 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloging, chassis no. 36 went to its next owner for $3,277,500. Additional well-sold supercars include a highly optioned 2019 McLaren Senna, the 95th of 500 examples produced and wearing Dramatic Visual Carbon Fiber bodywork, at $1,044,000; a desirable 2019 Ford GT ‘Lightweight’, a special option made available only to select applicants, which brought in $967,500; a 1993 Cizeta V16T, one of just nine examples completed and ordered new by the Royal Family of Brunei, which achieved $665,000; and an exclusive factory 1998 RUF Turbo R, extensively mechanically refreshed in October of 2020, which surpassed its high pre-sale estimate of $575,000 and sold for a final $764,000. 2019 McLaren Senna 2019 Ford GT 'Lightweight' - Automotive Photography by Deremer Studios, LLC Also claiming spots within the top ten were three highly sought-after 1950’s sports cars. Displayed at the 1954 New York World Motor Sports Show and 1954 Geneva Motor Show, the exclusive 1954 Ferrari 375 America Coupe by Vignale, one of just three examples bodied by the coachbuilder, sold for $2,557,000. The gran turismo came to the Arizona auction in its original and stunning burgundy and silver-grey finish over a beige interior and retaining its original 4.5-liter Lampredi V-12 engine. Another classic Ferrari, the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Alloy Coupe by Boano, also caught bidders’ attention, selling for a final $1,352,500. One of just 14 alloy-bodied coupes produced by Carrozzeria Boano between 1956 and 1958, the Classiche-certified Ferrari went to its new owner equipped with its matching-numbers V-12 engine, gearbox, and differential and in exceptional restored condition. Mecum Indy Fall Auction Proves Live Events Are As Strong ...

A Blue Moon on Halloween was supposed to be scary for all walks of life. But instead of panhandling for candy, we were glued to the TV. That's because Mecum's Indy Fall Auction proved that live events are as strong as ever. Our friend Dana Mecum sent his team around the country to round up classics and exotics that needed new homes. The 3-day event was highlighted by private collections that saw 543 cars sell for $13.4 million. When it was all said and over, only 15% of the consignments were left over. This unprecedented sell-through rate is proof that our hobby is strong despite the gloom of COVID fears.
