McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Our forces were split over the weekend. Racing fans were in Daytona for the Rolex 24, and Ferrari faithful could be found in Palm Beach. The Breakers Hotel was host to the 29th Annual Cavallino Classic, and we took some amazing shots for you. We arrived on Wednesday to spend time with our valued clients, and witness the arrival of the Apollo IE. To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the 250 GT SWB, David MacNeil arrived with the most valued Ferrari of all time. Our first show of the new year was spent with dozens of clients and thousands of friends. It was my 100th time working this show since August of 2011, and undoubtedly the best January weather in over a decade. Nashville Auto Show 2019 Recap

Halloween is just around the corner, so we decided to scare everyone a little early. We picked the meanest and cleanest cars and trucks in the Cumberland River Valley, so here is the Nashville Auto Show 2019 Recap. First in were three Corvettes. Not exactly full-size, these 2/3rd scale replicas are powered by a 107cc V-Twin and capable of 40 mph. Built by Mini Cars Inc, the pedals are easily adjustable for drivers up to 6'1". Then we heard a beast approaching. Brown Lee Ford sells more Hennessey trucks than anyone else, so the Velociraptor 6X6 was followed by a Harley-Davidson F-150 from Tuscany. Other goodies included a lowered standard cab with a Roushcharger and a Tuscany Black Ops Chevrolet Silverado. Another Brown Lee Ford Exclusive is the 2020 Gulf Edition Mustang. Only 119 cars will be built, and this is the prototype. It has a proprietary supercharger, intake, and exhaust to make 800 horsepower. It was the same car that was on display at our Pebble Beach booth. Taggart Scout travels the world looking for rust-free examples of the International Harvester, and their unbeatable restorations ride on a new 2-door Wrangler chassis with HEMI power. McLaren Philadelphia along with their parent company, RDS Enterprises were proud to show off their collection of Lamborghinis, an Urus and Huracan Performante Spyder were joined by a 720S Spider, McLaren GT, and a 570 GT4. Jaguar/Land Rover of Nashville arrived with a Range Rover SVR, F-Type SVR, F-Pace, and the new all-electric I-Pace. Carlock Motors was happy to display two Aston-Martin Vantages along with an Alfa-Romeo Ghibli and a GranTurismo convertible. Their R8 Spyder looked great nose-2-nose with Velocity Motorcars' R8 Coupe. Other Velocity Motorcars included a Lamborghini Huracan in Blu Achelous, Ferrari 458 Speciale in tri-color matte paint, and a Jack Roush Edition Backdraft Racing Cobra. Mercedes of Music City had 5 new 2020 models on display and BMW of Nashville arrived with 5 M Division and M-Sport models. Audi of Nashville and Porsche of Nashville brought a complete lineup, including a Panamera in bright green. Looking down from our VIP Suite, it was easy to see how the crowds were amazed by our dealer's inventory. Greenwich Concours d’Elegance Acquired by Hagerty

What began as a small event in 1996 has evolved into one of the world's must-see car shows. We have been a part of this show since the beginning because it is a great way to interact with our fans and dealers from around the Northeast. Not only is it our target audience, but our friend McKeel Hagerty also had the same idea. That is why the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance has been acquired by Hagerty. As the nation's leader in Collector Car Insurance, Hegerty's vision for the future was reported by the Greenwich Free Press. McKeel had this to say: Car people love Concours events, and this is one of the absolute best. We think we can take it to a whole new level by adding immersive, experiential elements that appeal to a broader swath of the car community, including younger fans.” He and his team intend to add Ride & Drives. If you have attended in the past, you know how hard Mary Wennerstrom works to put on this show. That is why she is staying on, as the Executive Director. duPont REGISTRY's Amelia Island Concours 2019 Recap

What began as a small group of classics has evolved into the 2nd largest automotive event. Only Monterey Car Week is larger than the Concours d'Elegance of Amelia Island. Our schedules were full as we hit the ground running on Wednesday. After procuring the supplies for 4 locations, our silver trailer was parked at the entrance of the Ritz-Carlton. A plethora of Porsches gathered at the Werks Reunion Friday morning. The adjacent fairway was being prepped for Festivals of Speed, and we positioned ourselves between our clients. Terradyne brought their latest Gurkha, and Superformance overloaded the crowd with several flavors of the Future GT Forty. This modern interpretation of the GT40 can be had with all the modern conveniences. Also on display were a few stunners from Naples Classic Car. The stunning HYT Skull watch. The Festivals of Speed was 10 am to 4 pm, which directly impinged on our ability to attend the Concours d'Lemons, a show aimed at misfits and odd survivors you forgot about. More importantly, our crew was split between Cars & Coffee, Motor Expo, and a Porsche Parade to downtown Fernandina Beach. We turned in early on Saturday night, in order to be ready for the 24th Annual Amelia Island Concours. We rallied at 7 am, ready to welcome our guests at Motor Expo, the main entrance, and our VIP Suite overlooking the field. The duPont REGISTRY crew rocking Robert Graham. Attendees were dropped off at Motor Expo, where we had a new Tommy Bahama Edition Airstream Interstate on display. Next to it were our friends from Nmoto, fielding their R7-inspired BMW motorcycle. Overfinch brought their latest in bespoke Range Rovers, and their carbon fiber trim caught everyone's eye. We couldn't look this sharp without the attire provided by Robert Graham. Superformance brought the Future GT Forty examples with carbureted big-block and supercharged Coyote power. The crowds proceeded to the main gate, with the duPont REGISTRY command center welcoming them to the event. Opening the event was John Oates singing the National Anthem, and it was a wonderful day. The only casualty was a gorgeous Lamborghini Miura SV, whose carburetors flooded on the way to the podium. Valentino Balboni diagnosed the problem and brought it back to life. Vanderhall Motor Works builds the ultimate American three-wheeler, and we will have two examples on display. Nothing protects your paint like Xpel protective film, and they will have a Porsche 911 GT2 RS completely covered in the amazing transparent composite. Our friends at CNC Exotics will have a Pagani Huayra Roadster along with a LaFerrari behind velvet ropes. Celebrity Cars Las Vegas will be showcasing an Ornata Spitfire, a modern American roadster that is built to order. Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance 2018

Florida in March has much to offer to us enthusiasts. It also can be unpredictable when it comes to weather. Such was the case last weekend as we attended the 2018 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. What began as a small motorsports reunion has evolved into a week of automotive overload on Florida's Northern-most island. To make sure we were dressed for the weekend, we would like to thank Robert Graham for the chic apparel.Leading up to the main event that normally happens on Sunday, we arrived at the Porsche Werks Reunion on Friday. It is among the largest Porsche shows in the world, and we saw everything from a new 911 GT3 Touring to a 918 Spyder. This daily driver arrived with beach sand in the rear diffuser and it took us by surprise with an electric cruise of the fairway. Our booth was located alongside Festivals of Speed, and we helped spread the news about their upcoming events.Porsche Club of America organized the event, and they had awards for several classes. Local resident racer Hurley Haywood was on-hand to promote his new book, and Porsche's first race car was on display. The long-lost LeMans winner wears #46, and it took the 1,100 cc win for its class in 1951. Awards were handed out around 3 pm, so we turned our attention to preparing our booth for Saturday's Festivals of Speed.As we built our booth overlooking the Amelia River, we learned that Sunday's Concours event would be moved to Saturday due to impending rain. It was a flashback to last year when, for the first time, the show was moved ahead due to weather. This meant that our Motor Expo location and our Hospitality Pavillion had to be built concurrently. Our newest display partner has been Moke America, and their intrepid electric cruisers proved to be perfect to transfer personnel and supplies across the island. Once the essentials were in place, it was parked on the driving range next to a new Lamborghini Aventador S from Fields Motorcars of Orlando.Our headquarters was inside a new AirStream Interstate because they are unmatched in luxury and fuel efficiency. Bruiser Conversions arrived with two new LS-powered Jeeps, so we decided to split them between Motor Expo and the Festivals of Speed. The driving range was also prepped for a Cars & Coffee.Once Motor Expo was in order, we turned our attention to the Ritz-Carlton hotel and our VIP pavilion. From our raised tent, we could see the cars being placed and new grandstands being assembled. Carroll Shelby's Cobra III and Mercedes-AMG's Project One were moved to the main entry gate. The focus of this year's event was the racing history of Emerson Fittipaldi along with a gathering of Ferrari Daytonas. We couldn't spend too much time drooling over so much history because Festivals of Speed would be the first event of Saturday.The Omni Amelia Island Plantation is also home to the Gooding & Company auction, which allowed us to see $35 Million worth of classics & exotics find new owners. It also offered a perfect venue for the Festivals of Speed, with the 9th fairway overlooking the river.The big JK Crew from Bruiser Conversions towered over everyone else on the field. Custom Crafted Cars brought two flavors of the Vaydor supercar, their main attraction was a customized ride for Shaq. If your McLaren needs 1,200 horsepower, Hypercar Development arrived with the latest in twin turbo technology.Back over at the Ritz-Carlton, the Concours was one for the record books. Over 300 cars and motorcycles were divided into 35 classes. Judges were evenly divided, so top honors went to a 1929 Duesenberg Convertible and a 1963 Ferrari 250/275P.Gallery by DeremerStudios.com Emerson Fittipaldi's winning cars included a 1970 Lotus, 1974 McLaren, 1974 Porsche 911 RSR Iroc, and a 1977 Camaro Iroc. It is an unlikely combination that will probably never be seen again, so we'll have more photos and auction results here in the coming days. A display of gorgeous alloys takes center place in the booth, and it is flanked by a late model Porsche 911 and a Bentley GTC wearing their new designs.Only 40 Lamborghini Centenarios were produced, and our friends at Lamborghini-McLaren of Scottsdale arrived with one of the rarest cars of recent history. Next to it is a new Callaway Z06 Corvette. The limited edition Carbon 65 celebrates the anniversary of Chevrolet's sports car, and it is being raffled by Ronald McDonald House.
