McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. duPont REGISTRY x Armature Works Cars and Coffee March 20...

Three months is a long wait to see old friends. While adhering to all safety precautions, the duPont REGISTRY x Armature Works March 2021 Cars and Coffee event was a great success. Tampa once had a giant network of streetcars powered by direct current. To make sure the trains ran on time, the Armatures were constantly serviced at the "Armature Works". If you haven't experienced the venue, it offers shopping and food with several areas for live performances. December was a trial run for an unprecedented automotive event, and it allowed us to hone the process. Staging dealer arrivals in 15-minute intervals, Ferrari of Tampa Bay was first-in. All of Dimmitt Automotive Group's luxury brands were represented up front, next to Paddock1 Luxury Garage. American Freedom Distillery arrived in a massive Ford Cab-Over emblazoned with the logos of their Horse Soldier Bourbon. Reeves Imports had a short drive from their headquarters while Buddy Brew had a never-ending supply of coffee. European Exotic Center is a great resource for sales and service, and they are the only authorized Koenigsegg workshop in the Southeast. Motor Enclave is about to open a 1.6-mile road course with storage for exotics, and their enthusiasm made for a great display. All parking lots were packed from 7 to 11 am, so it was all hands on deck. Our goal is to make this a more regular event, so we need your input! Fast Lane Drive: Rewriting the Rally As We Know It

What was once 15 friends driving their sports cars through Rancho Santa Fe is now a staple of the San Diego car industry with 75-car rally lineups and members who feel like family. So how did Fast Lane Drive become what it is today? Aside from the obvious allure of a tight- knit group of supercar owners, its founders and their board have held on to a few core values that fostered their success. First and foremost, Fast Lane Drive emphasizes exclusivity; but having a European supercar isn’t the only requirement for membership. Every candidate submits a written application, does a 30- minute face-to-face interview, and is then subject to final approval from the board via a majority vote. From there, you’re expected to participate and contribute to the community, attending at least three events per year. “The most important factor is the person and their personality,” says Connor. The board wants new members to be a fit for the Fast Lane Family, and they are always looking to diversify and broaden that mold. The San Diego chapter recently capped its membership at 100 drivers, so you’ll need to apply to a waitlist if you hope to join in the future. An equally important core value is Fast Lane’s focus on philanthropy. The car club is very involved in the San Diego community and regularly hosts events that highlight local charities throughout the county. In 2020 Fast Lane members hosted a drive for foster kids from the group Voices For Children, a cause very near and dear to their members’ hearts. They also hold a toy drive every holiday season, regularly donate to the SDPD, and get involved in tons of other causes like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Rady Children’s Hospital. And philanthropy isn’t an option for members—the fees collected from each drive are donated to various charities. If you want to be a part of this premier luxury car club, community service is non-negotiable. Among other values like a passion for travel, Fast Lane Drive is a community of supercar owners who love driving their supercars. These drivers don’t rent their McLarens or leave their Ferraris tucked away collecting dust; they use their cars to do what they were designed to do—drive. It’s customary for most Fast Lane members to take their own cars to racetrack events because anyone who owns a supercar knows that special feeling of pushing your own vehicle to the limit. It’s this type of shared mentality that puts Fast Lane’s members on the same playing field when it comes to business, too. GAA Classic Car Auction Sets New Sales & Attendance Records

Greensboro is quickly eclipsing many other automotive meccas, because GAA Classic Car Auction set new sales and attendance records. The last weekend in February were marked by bitter cold across the Piedmont, but it didn't stop our friends from selling 94% of consignments. With 650 classics and collectibles, the event exceeded $19 million thanks to several heavy hitters. Held at "The Automobile Palace", over 1,000 bidders fought over a collection of 10 Chryslers from 1959. All from the same collector in Bristol, TN sold for a combined $580,000. The highest bids were for a 2017 Ford GT Heritage Edition that hammered for $1.04 million, the most expensive car in their history. Their YouTube channel received nearly 50,000 views, and it will also be replayed on MAV TV on March 25th at 7pm ET. First Ford Bronco & Mustang Mach 1 Heading To Barrett-Jac...

Charity auctions are a great way to kick off a big event while also helping those in need. That's why the first Ford Bronco and Mustang Mach 1 are heading to Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. Ford is offering the rights to build VIN 001 of each for great causes. Since the Bullitt Mustang has retired, the return of the Mach 1 heralds 480 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. All proceeds from the auction will go to fight Juvenile Diabetes while the Bronco aims to help Outward Bound. This program offers outdoor adventure for at-risk youth. With all options onboard, this Sasquatch Package uses their EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 to send 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque to any terrain. The HOSS system includes locking differentials, 35" tires and fender flares all around. RM Sotheby's Sees Success in Arizona as First Live Auctio...

Presented by RM Sotheby's - On Friday, 22 January, RM Sotheby’s kicked off its 2021 auction calendar with the company’s 22nd annual Arizona auction, held this year at the OTTO Car Club in Scottsdale with limited, by appointment only in-person attendance, achieving $35,065,900 in total sales with 90 percent of all lots finding new homes. The one-day auction saw bidders from 35 countries around the world bidding in the room and via phone and internet. The undoubted star of the auction was a highly original 1955 Jaguar D-Type with substantial period race history, which sold to a bidder on the phone for a final $6,000,000. Wrapped in Red with an interior trimmed to match, the car was one of a very small number of D-Types to be so finished when new. Purchased new from Bernie Ecclestone by British racer Peter Blond and retaining many of its original components today, the well-documented example goes to its new caretaker as a worthy candidate for vintage competition at the highest and most prestigious levels. 1955 Jaguar D-Type 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corsica The second highest price achieved was an elegant and extremely rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corsica, one of eight examples bodied by the coachbuilder and just two examples in the four-seater configuration, which brought $4,735,000. Retaining its original chassis, engine, gearbox, differential, and body, the Bugatti came to the Arizona auction with known and fascinating ownership history, including time spent in the esteemed collections of Judge North and General Lyon. Additional pre-war classics also brought strong prices, including a CCCA Full Classic 1932 Cadillac V-16 Convertible Coupe by Fisher, one of 14 examples ever built, of which four survive today, and one of only a handful that were built with a factory rear-mounted spare, which surpassed its high estimate and went to a new home for $1,022,500; and a multi-award winning, CCCA Full Classic 1933 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Sedan by Dietrich, one of two extant and a completely numbers-matching example, which brought in $819,000. Top sales were also highlighted by several modern supercars, including a 2020 McLaren Speedtail, the first example of the marque’s most technologically advanced and fastest road car to sell at public auction. A masterpiece of automotive engineering with central driving position and three-seat configuration, the car was one of only 106 examples produced, paying tribute to the 106 McLaren F1s. Highly optioned by MSO and showing only 30 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloging, chassis no. 36 went to its next owner for $3,277,500. Additional well-sold supercars include a highly optioned 2019 McLaren Senna, the 95th of 500 examples produced and wearing Dramatic Visual Carbon Fiber bodywork, at $1,044,000; a desirable 2019 Ford GT ‘Lightweight’, a special option made available only to select applicants, which brought in $967,500; a 1993 Cizeta V16T, one of just nine examples completed and ordered new by the Royal Family of Brunei, which achieved $665,000; and an exclusive factory 1998 RUF Turbo R, extensively mechanically refreshed in October of 2020, which surpassed its high pre-sale estimate of $575,000 and sold for a final $764,000. 2019 McLaren Senna 2019 Ford GT 'Lightweight' - Automotive Photography by Deremer Studios, LLC Also claiming spots within the top ten were three highly sought-after 1950’s sports cars. Displayed at the 1954 New York World Motor Sports Show and 1954 Geneva Motor Show, the exclusive 1954 Ferrari 375 America Coupe by Vignale, one of just three examples bodied by the coachbuilder, sold for $2,557,000. The gran turismo came to the Arizona auction in its original and stunning burgundy and silver-grey finish over a beige interior and retaining its original 4.5-liter Lampredi V-12 engine. Another classic Ferrari, the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Alloy Coupe by Boano, also caught bidders’ attention, selling for a final $1,352,500. One of just 14 alloy-bodied coupes produced by Carrozzeria Boano between 1956 and 1958, the Classiche-certified Ferrari went to its new owner equipped with its matching-numbers V-12 engine, gearbox, and differential and in exceptional restored condition. Advance tickets are $30 per person for general admission (age 12 and over), $35 at the gate. Advance VIP, all-access tickets are $80 per person, $100 at the gate. VIP tickets include admission to the main show, plus exclusive access to the VIP Scuderia area where the highest value Ferraris will be showcased. Complimentary drinks, wine tasting, and food by Delicious by Design Catering are included in the VIP ticket as well as private restrooms. All attendees must wear an official Cars on 5th face mask for entrance and during the events. Face masks are available with paid admission and for pre-order. The Naples Auto Experience Jetport Reception will be held on Thursday, February 4, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Naples Airport at the Elite Jets Hangar and outdoor tarmac.
