Market Spotlight: Porsche 918 Spyder and the Holy Trinity Reckoning

A decade on, here is what the collector market for Porsche's hybrid supercar looks like per dR Garage data

Earlier this month, a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder hammered for $2.96 million on duPont REGISTRY Live, establishing two firsts for the platform simultaneously: the first Holy Trinity hypercar ever offered here, and the first Porsche halo exotic to cross the block since duPont REGISTRY Live launched in mid-November last year.

This particular example is finished in Guards Red over a Garnet Red interior and carbon fiber trim, carries the CXX Sonderwunsch or Special Wishes Custom Tailoring Option and the Carbon Fiber Interior Package, and shows just 420 miles from new, accompanied by its original window sticker, owner's manual, two keys, car cover, and charger. Critically, it is a standard specification example built without the Weissach Package, a fact that makes this result considerably more instructive than a record sale would have been. Having said that, this sale was reason enough for us to explore the 918 market and look up specific metrics that reveal even more insights in the duPont REGISTRY Garage app.

Porsche 918 Spyder History: Engineering, Design, and the Holy Trinity

Porsche first presented the 918 Spyder as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, placing the car in conversation with what would become the Holy Trinity alongside the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. The 918 represented the latest in a direct line of Porsche flagship engineering statements stretching from the 959 in the 1980s through the Carrera GT in the 2000s, each car defining the technological limits of its decade and each one now firmly established as a blue-chip collector asset. duPont REGISTRY recognised the significance immediately, placing the 918 concept on the cover of its June 2010 300th Collectors Issue, three years before production began and before a single customer car had been built.

Where the 918's Holy Trinity rivals treated electrification as a supplement to established performance philosophies, Porsche engineered the 918 around e-hybrid technology (hence the acid green accents on the bodywork/brake calipers) as its central proposition from the outset. Designed under Michael Mauer at Porsche's Weissach development center, the bodywork was shaped entirely around aerodynamic function, with active front underbody flaps, a variable rear diffuser, and an adaptive wing adjusting in real time to produce a car that looked precisely as purposeful as it was.

At its core sits a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 derived from Porsche's RS Spyder LMP2 race program, which produces 608 horsepower on its own, paired with two electric motors for a combined output of 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque, delivered through a 7-speed PDK to all four wheels. In September 2013, a Weissach-equipped example lapped the Nürburgring's 12.8-mile Nordschleife in 6 minutes 57 seconds, becoming the first street-legal production car to break the 7-minute barrier.

Production ran for nearly two years from September 2013 through June 2015. Of those 918 cars, 294 were delivered to customers in the United States, approximately 32 percent of total production, concentrating a meaningful share of global supply within the world's most active collector car market.

The duPont REGISTRY Garage app tracks the 918 Spyder as two distinct markets, and examining them in parallel reveals a dynamic that the headline figures alone do not convey. The Standard variant carries a current dRi market value of $2,712,500, with a median of $2,168,836 across 48 recorded price points since June 2015, total transactional volume of $75,493,692, and a compound annual growth rate of 10% over that period. The dR Live result of $2.96 million exceeds the current dRi market value, a premium reflecting the combination of ultra-low mileage and complete documentation in a market where both are actively scrutinized.

The Weissach variant registers a current dRi market value of $2,970,000, a median of $3,032,500 across 44 price points since January 2016, a total volume of $95,136,337, and a compound annual growth rate of 6% over the same horizon. Set those figures side by side, and a specific dynamic emerges: the gap between the two dRi market values is $257,500, while the gap between the two medians is $820,000. The Standard market has grown at nearly double the Weissach rate.

Specification, Color, and What Drives 918 Spyder Value

For collectors, several variables define value in ways that the headline price does not fully capture, and each deserves precise understanding rather than approximation.

The Weissach Package remains the most consequential specification decision in this market, reducing weight by 90 pounds through a carbon fiber roof, magnesium wheels, and exposed carbon aero elements, and carrying an $84,000 factory premium at MSRP. The package produced the Nürburgring record, the 2.2-second 0-to-60 figure, and the example that set the current model ceiling of $6,050,000 at Mecum Kissimmee in January 2026, a result that moved the previous record of $3,937,500 by nearly 40 percent in a single transaction driven entirely by a 1-of-1 Paint-to-Sample Pure Orange specification.

Color requires equally careful consideration. The finishes that move results meaningfully above the dRi median are rare Paint-to-Sample colors, among them Voodoo Blue, Acid Green, and Riviera Blue. A prime case is the recent example of the only Paint-to-Sample Riviera Blue 918 Spyder Weissach delivered to North America, which sold at Broad Arrow's Air/Water Auction in Costa Mesa for $4,680,000, well above the $4.5 million low estimate and against a Weissach dRi market value that has since risen to $2,970,000.

That result, driven entirely by a single-unit color specification within an already rare variant, accounts for the $4,680,000 high recorded in the Weissach dRi for May 2026 and illustrates precisely the premium that genuine color scarcity commands in this market.

Celebrity provenance adds a further layer of collector interest in this market, with documented 918 owners including LeBron James and Jerry Seinfeld, both of whom are considered serious collector custodians of the model, a distinction that carries weight when examples with that ownership history eventually come to market.

The Carrera GT, the 918's direct predecessor and a car we have covered in depth on duPont REGISTRY in a separate market spotlight, provides the most instructive valuation parallel available. Its low-mileage, rare-color examples now trade regularly above $2.3 million, driven by precisely the same collector cohort that is now active in the 918 market, and the appreciation pattern over the past four years maps closely to what the 918 dRi is currently tracing.

Market Outlook

Firmly on our list of Top 10 Porsches of all time, the 918 Spyder is entering a phase of reevaluation that its Holy Trinity peers have already begun, and the data supporting that observation is now difficult to argue against. A Standard market growing at 11% annually against the Weissach market's six percent, combined with a dRi gap between the two variants that has compressed to $257,500 at the current market level, while the median gap remains $820,000, describes a market in the process of repricing rather than one that has already done so.

The production run closed a decade ago, the collector cohort that drove the Carrera GT's appreciation is now active in this segment, and 294 U.S. examples represent the entirety of the domestic supply. The collector who waits for a broader consensus before forming a view will find, as has been the case with every comparable Porsche halo asset before this one, that the market has already moved.
