McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Exclusive Interview With Magnus Walker As He Showcases 10...

Over the last decade, Magnus Walker has become synonymous with the air-cooled Porsche world. It started with the release of the short film Urban Outlaw in 2012. In it, the viewer gets a glimpse into Walker's extensive Porsche collection and, more importantly, his mindset. It's no secret that an air-cooled Porsche's originality is a core element of its valuation. It is something overly money-conscious owners strive for while often shunning heavily modified cars in the process. Tuned Porsches were not a new thing at the time. But Urban Outlaw popularized the "Outlaw Porsche," the type of car that goes against the originality trend, often showcasing its owner's take on what a Porsche should be. This philosophy has inspired thousands of automotive enthusiasts across the globe, encouraging them to modify their cars to their taste, regardless of what some collectors deem to be "correct." To celebrate the film's 10th anniversary, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California, recently installed a new exhibition featuring ten of Walker's most significant cars. I met with Walker at the Petersen to discuss the last ten years, how he feels about his impact on automotive culture, and his take on electric cars. A short elevator ride leads me to the museum's famed vault, which contains around 250 of the world's rarest vehicles the public has likely never seen. Walker stands in a small exhibition room immediately to the left of the entrance, surrounded by his creations which include: 1965 Porsche 911 1967 Porsche 911 SRT 1971 Porsche 911 T #277 1973 Porsche 914 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo 1978 Porsche 911 SC Hot Rod 1980 Porsche 924 Carrera GT 1990 Porsche 911 964 1995 Porsche 911 993 RS Look 2004 Porsche 911 996 GT3 Before our chat formally began, Walker pointed out his many collaborations with major brands such as Nike and Hot Wheels over the last decade. He explained that these products are one of the ways he connects with enthusiasts who share similar passions. Those very enthusiasts supplied most of the art on the exhibition's walls. To complement them, Walker hung up various car parts taken directly from the walls of his downtown LA garage. This exhibition feels nothing like the others at the Petersen. It's not about a specific car or brand. It's about how one man's enthusiasm for cars brought together a community of like-minded, passionate people. Some responses have been edited for clarity. "So when it comes to the cars, this is not a Porsche 911 exhibition. It's a front, mid, and rear engine, air slash water-cooled 911, 924, and 914 exhibition. I will say one of the things I was really proud of was that all ten cars drove here. So on Monday, I had nine of my buddies in a caravan driving from my warehouse in downtown LA to the Petersen. Now a lot of the exhibitions you see here at the Petersen aren't driven to the exhibition. All 10 of these were driven here. So to me, we made a film about it driving over the Sixth Street Bridge." Why Porsche? And how did you go about collecting so many of them? "I bought my first one 30 years ago when I was 25. That really was a dream come true and gave me a personal sense of achievement. I bought it at the Pomona swap meet for $7,500 bucks. And nothing I've ever owned in the Porsche world, not even my 2014 Turbo S, cost me a lot of money. I bought these when they were not trendy and super affordable. They may have doubled and tripled in value now, but 10 or 15 years ago, Porsches were not as cool as they are today." "Porsche also made a lot of 'em. I always say the great thing about Porsche compared to Ferrari and Lamborghini is that you see a lot of high-mileage Porsches. They were built to be driven, unlike Ferraris, which weren't as reliable and were more expensive. So when it came time for me to start my collection, I bought the first one 30 years ago, but the collection probably started 15 or 20 years ago. I was buying what I liked, which became a lot more valuable. But it was never about money. It was just, 'hey, I like this. I like that.' And I was picking up three-liter turbos when no one cared about 'em." "At the time, everyone wanted a 997 GT3 or whatever it was. So to me I was sort of ahead of what became trending." How has your life changed after the release of Urban Outlaw? "I've traveled a lot and made nighttime driving videos in cities all around the world, like, Sydney, London, Tokyo, Miami, and New York. They're always about nighttime driving. And some of those are not in my cars but other people's cars. None of that would have happened without the Urban Outlaw film from 10 years ago. And you gotta remember, ten years ago, the automotive environment of content was a little bit different from what it is today. So Urban Outlaw at the time really stood out from a cinematic storytelling point of view." Now that you've traveled the world, why stay in Los Angeles? "I've lived in LA for 35 years. It's just, it's home. It's cinematic, but at night, it feels like you're in your own movie, ripping through the tunnels, over the bridges, in and out of downtown. It's kind of like my meditation. Night drives like that get you in this zone, the rhythm, usually 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM, where there's no one around. You can rip through the streets. So, you know, we're kind of spoiled here in LA that we've got access to these world-class driving roads, ocean, desert, mountain, and of course, Angeles Crest." Why do you think Urban Outlaw resonated with enthusiasts as it did? "This, to me, is a hobby. It's not a business. I don't buy and sell cars. It's an out-of-control hobby. But it's still a hobby. And I think that's the relatability for people obsessed with cars. You just pick your poison and your religion. Mine happens to be Porsche. For some people, it's, you know, Formula D or Fast and Furious or whatever it may be. Everyone's got their own flavor of cars." "I think they realized I have something you can't put in a bottle and sell. That's passion. I bought my first Porsche in 1992, so that's 30, 30 years ago. I've owned a lot of them, but I fell in love with 'em when I was 10. That's 45 years ago. This is not a trend for me." Given the impact you've already had on car culture, how do you think you can connect with the next generation of enthusiasts? "Everyone has a Hot Wheels story, from a two-year-old kid to a hundred-year-old person. I had one in my pocket of 277 that I carried around the world, and it has been to Australia, Japan, etc. This is the connection moving forward, you know, we're moving into this interesting time, with autonomous driving, people taking Ubers, not owning cars, ride-sharing, or whatever it may be. Car culture needs to survive to move on to the next generation. And as long as you can still get oil and gasoline and there are places like the Petersen, the car culture's looking pretty good." "But in a way, if I'm just turning someone onto cars by giving them a Hot Wheels car that sparks their interest. This is a win. So the collaboration with Hot Wheels is one that I'm really proud of because it's obtainable. And I'm all about relatability and obtainability. Everyone should be able to experience a little bit of joy with a 99-cent Hot Wheels. So five or six years later, I'm still proud of that relationship." Speaking of the future, has any electric car caught your eye? "I've driven many of them, and it always comes down to rage anxiety, and charging. I'm not bothered by the lack of engine noise, truth be told. Cause my pet peeve is usually Mercedes or BMW guys barking around and making lots of noise doing 25 mph. To me, speed no longer translates to you having to have a loud exhaust. And one of the great things about electric cars is cops don't really hear you coming unless it's tire squeal and stuff like that." "I'm not anti-electric cars, but there's nothing I really say, 'Oh, I need this.' You know, and I've driven vintage cars with electric motors in them, and it's the same thing again. It always comes down to range. But, Never say no. That's what I say. You know, I call it high-voltage rock and roll." Walker's Urban Outlaw exhibition is currently open to the public at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. It'll remain open through January 31st, 2023.

These Five Supercar Track Cars Are As Capable As They Get

There’s a time in every automotive enthusiast’s life when the words “best track cars” unavoidably enter the Google search bar and it’s okay! We all have an itch to flee from the mundane that can only be scratched by a large number of cylinders, hot rubber, and noises that would make deities shed a tear of joy. We’re here to go over some of the world’s most exotic race cars and most likely start arguments about which car is best for the track. You’re welcome. (Source: Lamborghini) When Lamborghini made the Essenza SCV12, they made sure to tick all of the boxes that make sure their track day car would stand out from every other one. Exclusive? Only 40 units were ever made with every owner immediately becoming part of a program that will allow them to experience their Essenza “on all the most prestigious circuits in the world’. Expensive? We hope you have $2.5 million lying around. And lastly, is it extreme? Between the 800+ HP produced by the 6.5L V12, the spoiler that could double as two park benches, and Lamborghini’s "aerodynamic supercharging", this car is the equivalent of every X Games event put together. (Source: McLaren) McLaren, on the other hand, went the production car-based route and birthed 75 examples of the McLaren Senna GTR. The 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 from the already insane McLaren Senna received a healthy dose of “oomph”, taking the HP figure up to 814 from the Senna’s 789. This is the fastest non-Formula One car that McLaren has ever produced, a fact that has been recognized by the FIA which cited the Senna GTR as one of the cars that embody their vision for the replacement of the World Endurance Championship’s Le Mans Prototype class. It’s one thing to be powerful, but influencing an entirely new class of FIA racing takes a special kind of engineering prowess that the Senna GTR is more than happy to flaunt. (Source: Pagani) Take a trip across the ocean to Italy’s San Cesario Sul Panaro comune and you’ll meet one of the most ingenious modern car designers. Horacio Pagani is known for his almost otherworldly or insect-like designs that first debuted with the legendary Zonda, which was already pretty much a street-legal race car. “Pretty much” was apparently not good enough for Horacio though and so he gave us the race-focused Pagani Zonda R, an entirely different beast with only 15 of them in existence. More downforce, more speed, and more radical technology are all key aspects of the Zonda R and together led to it claiming a new 6:47 Nürburgring record for Pagani, beating out the Ferrari 599XX. It’s a limitless beast and with the prices of all Pagani models climbing to seemingly never-ending heights, these uber limited-edition track toys are bound to surpass them. (Source: Ferrari) Now yes, I could have very well replaced this entry with the more powerful FXX-K but the Ferrari 599XX is just more than a track toy. The other track cars before it in this list all featured the sharp lines, crazy diffusers, and bridge-sized rear spoilers that are characteristic of cars in this market but the 599 is more refined. Based on the beautifully curvaceous 599 GTB Fiorano, the XX version turns the power up past 11 but keeps the same Louvre-worthy styling. Before the Zonda R had its time in the sun, the 599XX set a 6:58 Nürburgring record for Ferrari, which was the fastest time ever recorded for a production-derived sports car. Mark my words, when the 599 GTB finally gets the appreciation it deserves, the speed freaks will be looking at the 599XX for that perfect combination of speed and suavity that is best showcased in a Ferrari track car. (Source: Porsche) Not only is the Porsche 911 GT3 RS a track-ready machine, but it can also be used to make little Jimmy’s friends envious when you pick him up from elementary school. It’s as close as you can get to a road-legal race car. It’s a perfect balance between ludicrously fast and legally safe, a balance that drives people to worship these cars and the brand that spawned them. Other manufacturers do their darndest to make their own carbon-copy Porsche track car but seldom succeed. Its computers exist to serve only the necessary aspects of the car and do little to take away from the driver’s experience. Purity starts with the letter “p”, and as it turns out, so does Porsche.
