McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Ferrari of San Antonio Delivers a 296 Speciale Finished in Verde Nürburgring

Introduced as Ferrari’s first V6-powered supercar, the 296 GTB caught a lot of flak from collectors and purists, almost side-eyeing the hybrid-assisted, twin-turbocharged platform as an outcast within a lineup of 8- and 12-cylinder engines. And while it certainly proved to be an entirely new direction for the brand, its performance figures and stats are undeniable, winning over a whole new community of owners and enthusiasts. The 296 legacy follows that natural progression of Ferrari of perfecting its craft before launching a serious track-focused version of its road-going counterpart, thus the birth of the Ferrari 296 Speciale. GALLERY-EMBED The team at Ferrari of San Antonio took to its Instagram to show off a recently delivered 296 Speciale in what looks to be one of the best configurations we’ve seen yet. Shying away from some of the manufacturer's well-known, historical shades, this spec features a vibrant Verde Nürburgring finish with Argento Nürburgring racing strips and racing numbers. The choice of color really highlights how far Ferrari went to add extra aero and cooling while shedding weight, thanks to a ton of exposed gloss carbon-fiber components. RM Sotheby’s To Auction The First Ferrari Luce For Charity

Ferrari recently opened a new chapter in its long history by introducing the Luce, its first all-electric car. The Luce defies several Ferrari conventions with its four-door, five-seat layout, and, of course, its all-electric powertrain, which boasts over 1,000 horsepower. Its design comes from LoveFrom’s duo of Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson, and as a result, the new Luce features a unique, minimalist aesthetic in its interior, while also boasting the lowest drag coefficient of any roadgoing Ferrari yet. A major first in Ferrari history, the Luce is certain to be remembered as an important milestone in the legacy of the manufacturer, and the first production example, called “Chassis 0” is set to be auctioned during Monterey Car Week for charity by RM Sotheby’s. The first Luce Chassis, “Chassis 0” was customized by Ferrari’s Tailor Made program with a configuration that references the namesake of the car, light. The body of the car is finished in Madreperla Semi-Gloss, with a special pigment that emits a mother-of-pearl-like iridescence. Dedicated wheels complement the exterior color, with bespoke brake calipers enhancing the configuration, as well. The interior, meanwhile, features Le Mans metallic leather in Perla, which was developed specifically for the car, paired with secondary elements in Grigio Corvara. 2027 Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale Breaks Cover

Ferrari moved a day ahead of schedule, unveiling the 12Cilindri Manuale on July 3 rather than the July 4 date CEO Benedetto Vigna had pointed to at Tekion One 2026. Ferrari has not offered a gated shifter and clutch pedal on a V12 road car since the 599 GTB Fiorano, of which only 30 such examples were built before the configuration quietly disappeared from the lineup in 2007. That is nineteen years ago. The car is built around what Ferrari calls the Manuale By-Wire system, developed entirely in-house at Maranello. It pairs the existing eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with a new six-speed gated gear lever and a clutch-by-wire pedal, both engineered to replicate the physical sensation of a traditional mechanical gearbox without the mechanical connection underneath. Seventh and eighth gears are reserved exclusively for automatic mode, keeping the manual experience focused on the six ratios where driver engagement is highest. The lever employs a rotating steel block machined from solid, spring-loaded eccentric rollers for self-centering, and a profiled drum that generates the click and load variation a driver expects through the backlit knob, which, when manual mode is engaged, switches from white to amber as seen below. The whole assembly weighs less than 7.7 pounds. The clutch pedal works on the same principle. A cam, roller, and preload spring recreate the load-travel curve a driver expects from a mechanically linked clutch, while a digital position sensor reads intent across the full range of pedal travel and translates it into hydraulic actuation of the DCT clutch pack. Get the timing right, and the shift is clean. Get it wrong, and the car will jerk or stall, exactly as it should. Heel-and-toe is explicitly supported, and if the clutch is not depressed or an unauthorised gear is selected, the system physically blocks the lever from completing the movement. Ferrari has also removed the steering wheel paddles entirely, a detail worth noting given how rarely any manufacturer makes that decision on a modern performance car. Acoustic engineers at Maranello developed the sounds the lever produces during shifts as a standalone brief, separate from the mechanical development. The gear lever and clutch pedal are the only inputs in manual mode, which covers the first six gears and reverse. Automatic mode remains available at any time. The powertrain remains unchanged from the standard 12Cilindri: with the 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 rated at 819 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque at 7,250 rpm. Ferrari quotes 0 to 62 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds, and a top speed in excess of 211 miles per hour, which can only be achieved in automatic mode. The launch car seen here wears Rosso Rubino, with 24 further colors available, including Bianco Mille Miglia, Blu Pozzi, and Rosso Dino. Each car draws on Ferrari's Tailor Made personalisation programme, covering exterior color, Alcantara and leather interiors, and seat configurations in Comfort or Racing trim, both featuring six vertical grooves echoing the six gears. The front splitter and rear wings carry a pinstripe finish paying homage to the 365 GTB4, while the embossed scudetto, exclusive to this edition, is produced using a technique borrowed from precious coin minting. <- Gallery -> As duPont REGISTRY reported last month, when reviewing Ferrari's 13 trademark filings submitted to Italy's UIBM, the registered names included 12 Cylinders MM and 12Cylinders GTO, among others. Ferrari chose none of them. The car is simply called the 12Cilindri Manuale, which may be the most confident name Ferrari could have picked. Pricing starts at €590,000, which works out to roughly $675,000 at current exchange rates, representing a premium of roughly €190,000 (~$217,000) over the standard 12Cilindri. Ferrari Brings Three Hillclimb Debuts To Goodwood

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a prestigious and celebrated automotive event that takes place in one of the most historic and idyllic locations in England, with automotive manufacturers, drivers, and enthusiasts alike gathering from across the globe to celebrate automotive excellence of all kinds. Manufacturers will debut new models and showcase exclusive cars at the Festival of Speed, and specifically, Ferrari is bringing three cars to the Festival of Speed to make their dynamic Hillclimb debuts. Those are the Amalfi, the 296 Speciale A, and the 849 Testarossa. Ferrari’s Amalfi, which succeeds the Roma, is a V8-powered 2+ tourer that combines power, performance, and elegance with its stunning design. Making its dynamic debut this year, it made its UK debut at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Ferrari 296 Speciale A joins a celebrated lineage of special open-top supercars, like the 488 Pista Spider, the 458 Speciale A, and the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M, and it sets new standards with its dialed-in tweaks to the 296’s V6 hybrid power. A plug-in hybrid V8 successor to the SF90, the 849 Testarossa is both futuristic and a stunning homage to the ‘80s. It’s making its Festival of Speed debut this year, and it comes alongside returning cars like the Ferrari F80 and the Ferrari 12Cilindri. Ferrari is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of its XX program, which was introduced in 2005 with the track-only FXX, and continued with the 599 XX, the FXX-K, and most recently with the road-legal SF90 XX Stradale and Spider. Celebrating the 20th anniversary at Goodwood is a pair of XX cars, the FXX and FXX-K Evo, which will take on the hillclimb in a unique commemorative livery. The Ferrari 296 Challenge race car will also take part in the Goodwood Timed Runs, and Ferrari’s Laundry Green display is returning to the Festival with many of the cars that are also taking on the hillclimb. In addition to those will be the Purosangue Handling Speciale, which features tweaks catered towards enhanced driving engagement. VIP guests will also get the opportunity to view the all-electric Ferrari Luce in an exclusive private area. Scuderia Ferrari is also celebrating the 75th anniversary of its first Grand Prix victory, achieved in 1951, at the Festival of Speed. As such, several historic Ferrari F1 cars will take to the hill. These include the F300, the F1-2000, the F2007, two F2008s, and the SF21. Ferrari Drops New Film With Nicholas Hoult

With appearances in films like Superman (2025), and Nosferatu (2024), and the TV sensation Skins, British actor Nicholas Hoult has had a career in which he has played some intense roles. However, outside of acting, another thrilling pursuit of Hoult’s is racing, and Ferrari captured his journey as a first-time racer in a new film that is available on its YouTube channel, Edge Of Control. The new film captures Hoult’s journey through his first wheel-to-wheel racing weekend, which took place at The Thermal Club, an exclusive circuit in Southern California known for its challenging layout and its stunning location. While Hoult was racing for the first time there, his own personal relationship with Ferrari stretches back much further. In his childhood, Hoult had a love for F1 and an admiration for legendary Scuderia Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, which he shared with his father. On the set of About A Boy, Hoult rode in a Ferrari 550 Maranello for the first time, and that passion evolved into a desire to take on the track, inspired by fellow actor and Ferrari Challenge driver Michael Fassbender. In the film, Hoult compares the moments of preparation for racing to preparation as an actor, relying on his own skill to focus and see him through the task ahead. At the end of the Thermal Club racing weekend, Hoult’s qualifying result of fourth, as well as his fifth- and eighth-place finishes in Race 1 and Race 2, were an especially positive takeaway for a first-time racer in a field of more seasoned drivers. Behind the wheel of the Ferrari 296 Challenge, Hoult raced in the Coppa Shell Am class, making his official Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America debut at Thermal. However, his time with the track began much earlier, specifically in 2020 when he entered Ferrari’s Corso Pilota program. With the non-competitive Club Challenge, Hoult was able to build mileage and experience not only on Thermal, but on other tracks seen in the Ferrari Challenge series, like Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, and Daytona. Last Mid-Engine Ferrari To Offer A Gated-Manual Transmission

The Ferrari F430 holds a distinction that often gets overshadowed by horsepower figures and lap times. It is the last mid-engine V8 Ferrari from Maranello ever offered with a conventional six-speed manual gearbox, complete with three pedals, a clutch, and Ferrari's iconic gated shifter, before the company's mid-engine V8 lineup transitioned permanently to paddle-operated transmissions. Designed by Pininfarina under the direction of Frank Stephenson, the F430 hails from the Montezemolo era and was built around a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 producing 483 horsepower. The F430 remained in production from 2004 through 2009. When the Ferrari 458 Italia arrived, the manual option disappeared entirely, closing that chapter for good. The manual was always the minority choice, as most F430 buyers selected Ferrari's F1 electrohydraulic automated manual transmission, which offered significantly quicker shift times than a conventional manual gearbox. Petrolicious estimates that roughly 10 percent of the overall F430'2 15,000 unit production run left the factory with the traditional six-speed manual, spanning both the Berlinetta and Spider variants. Those figures make it rarer than the 430 Scuderia at 1,800 units. The more focused F430 Scuderia and the 499 unit Scuderia Spider 16M, however, were offered exclusively with the F1 transmission and could not be ordered with a manual. That distinction becomes even more significant when viewed within Ferrari's broader history. The manual gearbox did not disappear from Ferrari's lineup immediately after the F430, since the front-engine Ferrari California continued to offer a traditional six-speed for a short period into the early 2010s, albeit with an exceptionally low take rate. Within Ferrari's mid-engine V8 berlinetta lineage, however, the line that stretches from the 308 through the 328, 348, F355, 360 Modena, and F430 ends there. Every successor, beginning with the 458 Italia and continuing through today's models, has been paddle shift only. That rarity has translated directly into value. A small number of specialist workshops now perform manual conversions on F430s and even Ferrari 458s that were never available with a factory manual. One widely documented F430 Scuderia conversion required approximately a year of engineering work, including extensive electronic integration and fabrication of a bespoke pedal assembly. The growing demand for these conversions illustrates how desirable the factory manual has become, with enthusiasts willing to invest substantial sums to recreate a configuration Ferrari originally built in only a small fraction of F430 production. <- Gallery -> Ferrari has never published an official regional breakdown for the F430, a question that comes up regularly among owners themselves, but the United States has long stood as the model's single largest market, consistent with roughly a third of global volume for this generation based on broader Ferrari sales patterns of the era. Color choice adds another layer to the manual's desirability. Among six-speed cars specifically, Grigio Silverstone has emerged as one of the most coveted shades, alongside the classic pairing of Rosso Corsa over beige, the exact specification behind a manual example that reportedly sold for $430,000, among the highest publicly recorded prices for the variant.
