Ferrari 296 GT Modificata Unveiled as Track-Only Evolution of the 296 GT3 Evo
Ferrari has revealed the 296 GT Modificata, a track-only two-seater developed exclusively for its Club Competizioni GT program, at the Ferrari Racing Days event in Budapest, Hungary. The Modificata name traces back to the 512 M of 1970 and was later revived for the 488 GT Modificata and 499P Modificata. Although it retains the familiar proportions of the road-going 296, the Modificata is much closer in concept to the 296 GT3 Evo, which debuted at the start of the 2026 season. The GT3 Evo is a homologated competition car restricted by racing regulations and Balance of Performance, while the Modificata removes those constraints for non-competitive track use. Its rear-mid-mounted 2.9-liter, 120-degree V6 produces roughly 720 horsepower, which is about 128 horsepower more than the Balance of Performance-limited 296 GT3 Evo. Ferrari says that additional performance gives the Modificata the potential to lap Fiorano three seconds faster than its racing counterpart. Engine revisions focus on the crank train, camshafts, induction system, intercoolers and turbochargers. The turbos retain the GT3 Evo's exterior housings but use bespoke internals informed by the 499P Modificata. Ferrari also developed new tailpipes and revised ratios for the six-speed sequential gearbox with carbon clutch. Visually, the Modificata retains the basic proportions of the road-going 296, but almost everything around them has been reshaped for the circuit. Exposed carbon fiber dominates the slotted front splitter, rear wing and deep multi-channel diffuser, while center-lock wheels, Pirelli slicks and high-mounted twin exhaust outlets reinforce its GT3-derived character. New ventilated steel front discs, revised cooling ducts and an additional lower-bumper intake improve brake thermal management. ABS is calibrated to make the car's performance accessible to drivers of varying skill levels. The same theme carries into the cockpit, with a digital display sitting behind a competition steering wheel, an extensive array of switchgear, exposed carbon fiber, racing harnesses and window nets. Unlike a conventional GT3 race car, however, the Modificata is configured for two. A revised roll bar makes room for a proper passenger bucket seat, dedicated footrest and integrated intercom, allowing an instructor to provide real-time coaching during timed sessions. Ferrari includes expanded data acquisition, onboard video, a rear camera and infrared tire-pressure and temperature monitoring. Buyers can also specify rear radar and personalized liveries. While Ferrari hasn’t revealed exact production numbers, it will be extremely limited, with the purchase including two years, or 12 rounds, of Club Competizioni GT.
