Why The 458 Speciale Is One Of The Best Modern Ferraris

Why The 458 Speciale Is One Of The Best Modern Ferraris

Ferrari has an immense pedigree of incredible cars, with countless breathtaking creations that showcase speed, luxury, engineering prowess, and design beauty, and for a car to stand out as one of the best Ferraris is no easy feat. The Ferrari 458 Speciale is one of those cars, managing to be the creme de la creme and be noted as one of the greatest performance cars ever made, but what makes it special isn’t as simple as being the fastest, most powerful, or most expensive. However, that is what makes it a car that will always be special and remembered. As top speed and power records continue to eclipse each other, especially as electrification has taken stats like horsepower and torque figures to a whole new level, the Ferrari 458 Speciale remains one of the greatest moments in Ferrari’s history, and whether that’s in tangible or intangible ways, its everlasting legendary status is impossible to deny. To those unfamiliar with the legacy of the Prancing Horse, it might be hard to understand why prices for the Ferrari 458 Speciale remain so incredibly high as time passes, but those who are in the know see it as a modern gem. So why is the Ferrari 458 Speciale so special, no pun intended? One of the most important reasons is that it’s the end of an era. The Ferrari 458 Speciale was the last, and arguably the greatest Ferrari to be powered by a naturally-aspirated V8 engine. A 4.9-liter unit, the engine mustered 597 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque, giving the car the ability to get from 0-60 mph in just 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of 202 mph. Its Fiorano Circuit lap time was only half a second slower than the F12berlinetta and its V12 engine, and its revised design, focused on aerodynamics and enhanced performance, was the result of a collaboration between the Ferrari Styling Center and Pininfarina. While the exact number is unknown, an exclusive, limited number of 458 Speciale coupes were made, but even more exclusive is the Ferrari 458 Speciale A. Standing for “Aperta,” the A designated that this version of the 458 Speciale was a Spider, and with its open top, it reached a slightly lower top speed of 199 mph. Only 499 examples of the 458 Speciale A were made, making it even more exclusive and desirable. With its rarity, its incredible performance, and its status as the ultimate naturally-aspirated V8 Ferrari, the 458 Speciale will always be one of the greatest Ferraris to ever take its place in the Prancing Horse’s stable. If you’re interested in owning one, it would certainly be a great addition to any Ferrari collection or exotic car collection. The Last Naturally Aspirated Mid-Engine V8 Ferrari Ever B...

Within Ferrari’s mid-engined V8 lineage, nothing captures the peak of the naturally aspirated era more perfectly than the 458 Speciale. It represents the final evolution of Maranello’s high-revving V8 formula before the shift to the turbo/hybrid generation began. Looking back, Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 bloodline began with the 308 GTB in 1975 and progressed through significant milestones like the 348, the F355, the 360 Modena, and the F430, eventually arriving at the 458 Italia that hit the scene back in 2009. The 458 introduced a modern dual-clutch transmission (DCT), delivering rapid, seamless shifts with real usability at low speeds.  It packs a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 with 562 horsepower, sophisticated aero that generated functional downforce without a fixed rear wing, and a chassis that elevated steering response to new levels. We can’t talk Italian and not talk about its timeless form. Designed by Ferrari’s in-house styling center in collaboration with Pininfarina, Jeremy Clarkson once described the 458 Italia as “the prettiest car Ferrari has made in years,” and time has proven him correct as the shape has aged well.  The 458 Speciale that broke cover in 2013 refined that standard platform into something sharper. Its 4.5-liter V8 makes 605 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, 398 pound-feet of torque, and a visceral soundtrack to go with it. The standard 458 weighs 3,042 pounds dry, whereas the 458 Special tips the scales at 2,846 pounds, improving the power-to-weight ratio to about 4.7 pounds per horsepower. At speed, active aerodynamic elements integrated into the bodywork deliver 529 pounds of downforce at 124 mph.  That improvement was a direct result of new front winglets, revised bumper and Kamm tail diffuser designs, vented body panels, and an updated rear deck shape. Hardware upgrades also included lighter engine internals, a carbon fiber underbody, carbon ceramic brakes, forged wheels, recalibrated suspension, and new tire specifications matched to the chassis. The Speciale also introduced Side Slip Angle Control, an integrated handling system that communicates between the electronic differential, traction control, and stability management to allow controlled slip without sacrificing precision. All this directly translated into faster circuit performance, and the Speciale recorded a 1 minute 23.5 second lap time at Fiorano, more than a second quicker than the standard 458 Italia (1:25) and the Enzo (1:24.9). Zero to 60 mph is done away with in 3.0 seconds, and top speed is 202 mph. While the 458 Speciale really excelled on the race track, it's truly meant for the street, and despite having a driver-focused cockpit, creature comforts like a suspension lift system and NAV were available. The mannetino helped you to further improve usability by switching the dial over from 'Race' to 'Sport'. In 2014, Ferrari introduced the 458 Speciale A, where the A stands for ‘Aperta’. It retained all mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics of the coupe while adding the open-top drama of a convertible, and the weight penalty is just 110 pounds. Period rivals to the 458 Speciale include the McLaren 650S, the Lamborghini Huracán LP610 4, and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 991. In terms of production numbers, between 2013 and 2015, Ferrari built 1,309 units of the Speciale coupe and 458 units of the Speciale Aperta globally. A one-off 458 Speciale MM also exists. Factory 458 Speciale colors commonly included Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, and Nero Daytona. However, paint-to-sample orders in shades like Grigio Silverstone, Bianco Avus, and Blu Tour de France with contrasting stripes are increasingly sought after. Options such as carbon fiber wheels, extensive carbon fiber interior trim, and exposed engine bay configurations are highly valued. Standard 458 Italias sit near $230,000 depending on condition, while Speciales consistently land in the $550,000 to $600,000 range with tailor-made configurations and low-mileage cars commanding even higher figures. In terms of one-offs, you have the As modern supercars continue to integrate hybrid systems and turbos, the market appears to be placing a premium on pure combustion models. Mid-engine production Hybrid  Ferraris like the 296 GTB (819 hp), SF90 (986 hp), and the recently introduced 849 Testarossa (1,036 hp) may be faster, but collectors understand that sound, response, and mechanical purity are not replaceable. Models like the 458 Speciale, the F12tdf, and the 812 Competizione have become increasingly desirable among non-hybrid Ferraris for this very reason. For those seeking the definitive statement of Ferrari’s V8 heritage, the 458 Speciale delivers the end of an era with absolute clarity. It marks the highest point of natural aspiration in a road-going Ferrari V8. View All Ferrari 458 Speciale For Sale Images: Ferrari

Ferrari 458 Italia Specs, Price, Photos & Review

First released in 2009, the Ferrari 458 Italia specs brought a new take to an iconic brand. The Ferrari team combined great design with advanced technology to create a car that is amazingly fun to drive. The Millechili concept car and Enzo Ferrari design elements result in this lightweight but sporty addition to the line-up. The 2015 advertised Ferrari 458 price was $239,340 (MSRP), but currently, the prices of the 458 can differ wildly depending on mileage, year, variant, paint, and more. Though no longer in production, there are plenty of Ferrari 458 Italias for sale currently that are looking for new owners. In the era when turbocharged engines became popular, this particular vehicle signifies the final creation of an exhilarating masterpiece without forced induction from Maranello. Engaging a lower gear will propel you to 7,000 revolutions per minute, where the true potential of its power is unleashed. Although turbos may provide greater horsepower, nothing compares to the seamless torque delivery and thrilling experience at high RPMs. That's precisely why incorporating aftermarket exhaust systems and installing larger camshafts can bestow your Ferrari 458 Italia with unparalleled individuality in terms of specifications. The car's weight distribution follows a ratio of 42% at the front and 58% towards the rear end, favoring an evident bias for better handling dynamics. Even if you are accustomed to driving vehicles with front-mounted engines, don't feel intimidated; simply pressing down on the accelerator pedal will facilitate smooth rotation through each corner encountered on your journey. With a 4.5-liter V8 engine, it delivers an impressive 562 horsepower at a thrilling 9,000 rpm while also providing a substantial torque of 398 lb-ft at a usable 6,000 rpm. This remarkable power allows the Ferrari 458 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. One notable feature of the Ferrari's engine is its pioneering direct fuel injection system, which is a first for road vehicles produced by Ferrari. This innovative technology optimizes fuel combustion and results in surprisingly efficient fuel consumption with only seven gallons per every hundred miles traveled. In terms of fuel economy, the Ferrari achieves commendable figures within its class, achieving approximately17.7 mpg on highways and around13 mpg in urban conditions. It's worth mentioning that the Ferrari's engine represents one of the last naturally aspirated V8 engines produced by Ferrari as they transition towards turbocharged engines for future models. In terms of maintenance, keeping this powerhouse running smoothly is straightforward due to readily available oil filters and easy accessibility. Reliability is another key aspect of the Ferrari's engine design. It incorporates dual throttle bodies along with dual oxygen sensors and mass airflow systems to ensure redundancy and maximize efficiency during operation. The timing chain has been engineered to withstand the entire lifespan of the car without requiring belt replacement services—an added convenience for owners. Ferrari 458 Italia Transmission Moving on to transmission capabilities, the Ferrari features an exceptional transmission system—a cutting-edge seven-speed dual-clutch Getrag gearbox—which sets it apart from traditional Ferraris equipped with iconic gated manuals. By opting for this advanced transmission system, drivers can focus solely on their driving experience while benefiting from seamless gear shifting facilitated by integrated E-Diff3 electronic differential—resulting in a more compact and lightweight assembly. While some purists may miss having a manual gearbox option available, the Getrag transmission is a mechanical marvel. It was refined in 2011 with improved electronics and programming to enable faster shifting while reducing clutch wear. The robust dual-clutch pack has been designed for longevity, ensuring that the Ferrari's performance remains seamless throughout its entire lifespan. In conclusion, the Ferrari 458 Italia boasts an impressive engine and transmission system that combines power, efficiency, reliability, and serviceability. With its Formula 1-inspired innovation and cutting-edge technology, this iconic vehicle continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts worldwide. Ferrari 458 Italia Brakes The Ferrari 458 Italia showcases an exceptional braking system that pays homage to the brand's Formula 1 roots. Equipped with carbon-ceramic discs on all four corners, this cutting-edge CCM (carbon-ceramic material) system boasts larger front and rear discs measuring 15.7 inches and 14.2 inches respectively, ensuring swift deceleration from its impressive top speed of over 202 mph. Ferrari has enhanced the disc size compared to previous models in order to match the heightened performance capabilities of the 458 Italia. Thanks to this state-of-the-art CCM system, the vehicle achieves an astounding stopping distance by halting from a speed of 60 mph to a complete stop within just 107 feet. For those who have a penchant for competitive track days, there is also an option to upgrade to cast-iron discs similar to those used in Ferrari's challenge race cars. These brakes are skillfully engineered to adeptly handle the substantial horsepower of the Ferrari 458, providing drivers with both reassurance and control even at high speeds Ferrari 458 Italia Design From the sleek shape to the scoop over the rear wheel arches, the exterior of the Ferrari 458 Italia is in line with the Maranello brand's characteristic style. But the Ferrari 458 Italia specs moved the Ferrari style forward by improving aerodynamics. The compact design focuses on reducing the 458 Italia's weight and lowering its center of gravity. Other aerodynamic features include side air intakes and a single-opening front grille. The flat underbody has air intakes for cooling the engine bay. The two air intakes on the rear wings direct cooler air to the oil radiators for the gearbox and the dual-clutch transmission, while dragging out the hot air. To wrap up the exterior design of the Ferrari 458 Italia, the triple exhaust pipe gives the car a seriously sporty look. What makes the Ferrari 458 specs appealing in design is that it is one of the last cars to be influenced by Pininfarina. To celebrate seven decades of cooperation, the final examples of the Ferrari 458 were named Sergio to honor the famous designer. Now with styling under the "Centro Stile", many enthusiasts are embracing the futuristic lines. Ferrari 458 Italia Price The aesthetics of the Best Ferrari 458 Italia perfectly capture the distinctive style that defines the Maranello brand. Its sleek and streamlined silhouette, along with its unique scoops above the rear wheel arches, not only create a signature look but also enhance its aerodynamics. Unlike its predecessors, this model focuses on both aerodynamic efficiency and reducing weight by adopting a compact structure and lowering its center of gravity. The designers have paid meticulous attention to detail when it comes to the car's aerodynamic components - from side air intakes to a unified front grille. Underneath the car, you'll find a flat underbody that cleverly incorporates vents for engine cooling. Additionally, there are two intakes located on the rear quarter panels which direct cool air towards crucial components such as oil radiators for both gearbox and dual-clutch systems while simultaneously removing hot air. These engineering marvels ensure optimal performance. What truly sets apart the exterior design of the Ferrari 458 Italia is its assertive character highlighted by an eye-catching triple exhaust arrangement. This feature reinforces the vehicle's commitment to high-performance driving experiences. It is worth noting that this particular model holds special significance as one of Pininfarina's final contributions before Ferrari shifted their focus to in-house 'Centro Stile' styling. As a tribute to Pininfarina's legendary influence over seven decades of collaboration, these last iterations were named 'Sergio'. While some purists may initially resist change, they are gradually embracing Centro Stile's progressive contours that continue pushing boundaries in automotive design. Ferrari 458 Italia Interior The interior of the Ferrari 458 Italia showcases a seamless blend of practicality and comfort, surpassing the ergonomic design found in its previous models. While meticulous attention has been given to reduce weight, the cabin emanates an unmistakable aura of luxury and sophistication. The seats, inspired by racing aesthetics, are draped in exquisite leather and embellished with top-tier finishes that beckon you into the cockpit. Once inside, your driving experience is elevated to new heights as you lay your hands on the multi-functional steering wheel, transforming every journey into a pilot-like adventure. Conveniently mounted on the spokes of this remarkable wheel are turn signal controls while navigation and audio functions are easily accessible within arm's reach. Renowned for its highly sought-after options, such as the iconic Daytona seats adorned with precision contrast stitching and a distinctive yellow tachometer, the interior of the 458 Italia exudes exclusivity. Furthermore, it boasts enhanced soundproofing capabilities that elevate refinement and deliver unparalleled comfort within its class. However, what truly sets this masterpiece apart may not be immediately apparent at first glance. The aluminum space frame structure provides exceptional strength that far surpasses its predecessors in terms of robustness and overall comfort. With lower door sills ensuring effortless entry and exit from the vehicle, an ideal driving position meticulously crafted for maximum enjoyment behind the wheel, coupled with expansive visibility throughout—every aspect of 458 Italia's interior has been ingeniously engineered to enhance your driving pleasure. This innovative design also marks a departure from popular trends seen in late '90s vehicles featuring rubberized coatings—a trend that predates widespread use of microfiber materials—instead offering pure Italian leather upholstery complemented by an array of contrasting stitching choices. Adding further opulence to this already luxurious ambiance are two-tone Daytona seats—an upscale touch that underscores this car's bespoke elegance Ferrari 458 Italia Standout Features The specifications of the Ferrari 458 Italia, which include a powertrain influenced by Formula 1 and advanced aerodynamics, effortlessly captivate both enthusiasts and onlookers. Throughout its production period, this luxury sports car dominated performance charts in various markets worldwide, from the United States and the United Kingdom to Japan. By incorporating mechanics derived from Formula 1 racing, this vehicle set a new standard as the first road-going car of its size to reach an impressive 9,000 revolutions per minute. One of the standout features of the Ferrari 458 is its precision-forged wheels that ensure optimal performance. The race-bred seats provide unparalleled comfort during long drives while maintaining maximum support for spirited driving. Additionally, the emblematic rearing stallion symbolizes not only elegance but also represents the rich heritage associated with Ferrari. Through collaboration with industry leaders, such as Alcoa, renowned for their expertise in aluminum forging technology, Ferrari ensures top-notch craftsmanship for its chassis and key components. Brembo contributes high-performance calipers while Alcoa meticulously designs intricate details like wheels, control arms, doors, fenders, and cabin elements. This esteemed company has played a vital role in aviation history alongside pioneers like the Wright Brothers and continues to excel in producing high-performance materials. Moreover, the exhaust system of the Ferrari 458 serves dual purposes: reducing weight and delivering an unmistakable sound signature synonymous with all Ferraris. The engine itself is proudly displayed beneath a rear glass panel, a nod to tradition seen throughout generations of V8-powered Ferraris. The driving experience offered by the 458 Italia prioritizes performance above all else. Its steering feel is remarkably precise, and responsiveness so sharp that it evokes sensations typically reserved for race cars. Yet, this exceptional machine remains tame enough even for drivers who appreciate refinement. Not simply an extraordinary automobile, the Ferrari 458 Italia embodies future classic status, making it highly sought after among collectors. With its unique blend of style, incomparable handling, and formidable power, the 458 Italia stands as a true masterpiece in the Ferrari lineup. This Manual-Swapped Ferrari 458 Speciale by Modificata Is...

The Ferrari 458 Speciale is arguably one of the most significant cars the Italian carmaker has produced over the last ten years. A look through magazines from 2013 reveals that journalists praised its looks, handling, and, most importantly, its engine. Ferrari's F136 4.5-liter V8 is a masterpiece, redlining at 9,000 rpm while delivering a level of response seldom seen in today's latest supercars.  Furthermore, it became the last naturally-aspirated V8-powered Ferrari ever, as the 488 GTB that followed featured a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter unit. However, as notable and rare as the 458 Speciale is, it had one flaw. Like the 458 Italia upon which it is based, the only way to send power to its rear wheels was via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.  Thankfully, a restoration workshop out of Miami, Florida, has set out to right this wrong by manual-swapping one of the 3,000 Speciale coupes produced. They're called Modificata, and while exact details on this build are scarce, it's clear that they've gone where Ferrari dared not to. And we're not just talking about a beautiful gallery of images. Check the video link above to see this one-of-a-kind Speciale in action, sliding through what looks like a private compound while hitting its 9,000 rpm redline.  The photos reveal an OEM-plus approach to this unique swap. Gone is the Speciale's carbon-fiber center console, replaced with a gated H-pattern shifter. From the new center console's leatherwork and overall execution of the swap, it looks like something Ferrari itself would produce.  While Modificata doesn't specify exactly where this Speciale's six-speed manual comes from, It's most likely out of the F430. While most F430s left the factory equipped with the brand's F1 automated manual, a small batch featured a manual transmission. And considering that the F430 also featured a variant of the brand's F136 V8, this is likely the closest fit. Although, it's a stretch to imagine this swap was an easy one. Modificata itself posted to Instagram stating:  "This undertaking has been a real labor of love for us, and make no mistake, it was a long time coming. For all the challenges we faced along the way, there is no better reward than the Italian symphony of 9,000 RPM and the metallic click-clack of a gated shifter." Now there's a statement that's tough to disagree with. Still, while the workshop indicates that the manual swap saves a significant amount of weight, it has yet to offer any specifics. Additionally, it'll take thorough road testing to see how the manual and its gearing will affect 0-60 mph times, top speed, etc.  But in reality, the stats don't matter. What matters is that a lucky few now get to interact directly with arguably one of the best naturally aspirated V8's ever. While this swap will likely not translate into a trend given how valuable Speciale's have become as the prancing horse steers closer toward electrified cars, it's great to see such a dream project come to life and see real-world use. Now, if we could get the keys for a drive, that'd be even better. View All Ferrari 458 Speciales For Sale Photo Credit: @puppyknuckles via Modificata on Instagram

2010-2015 Ferrari 458 Italia: Price, Specs & Photos

Not everyone needs or wants a V12 engine. Some of us are content with a V8, as long as the car is extraordinary. The Ferrari 458 is one such machine. It proudly wore the Scuderia Shield from 2010 to 2015 with a 4.5 liter V8 between the cockpit and the rear wheels. It was the evolution of a concept that began with the 360 Modena. Ferrari 458 Challenge: Not Civilized A partnership between Maranello and engineers at Aloca developed a revolutionary aluminum space frame. If you are considering a pre-owned Ferrari, here is why the 458 Italia should be your first consideration. The 360 and F430 series proved the worthiness of the frame, with improvements on each model before the Ferrari 458 Italia specs appeared. Both of those cars use timing belts that must be changed at regular intervals. Reliability is a major reason why you should buy a 458.  458 Italia Engine: 4.5 liters Dual Overhead Cams 4 Valves Per Cylinder 562 Horsepower & 398 lb-ft of torque The 458 Italia represents the swan song for Ferrari's naturally aspirated V8. Cars like the 488 GTB have smaller engines with twin turbos, but nothing beats the sound of 9,000 rpm a few inches behind your ears. The 4.5 liter V8 uses timing chains, and it has proven to be incredibly reliable. Once buyers got their hands on them, their friends must have been jealous. That's because Ferrari built no less than 18,000 examples. 458 Italia Specs: 2 Seat Coupe or Convertible (Spider) 3,274 lbs 0-60: 3.9 seconds 13 mpg city/17 mpg highway Top Speed: 199 mph A Ferrari 458 Italia is an ideal way to own an Italian car. It was the last Ferrari to be styled by Pininfarina, and they chose to walk away at the top of their game. It looks, sounds, and performs like nothing else on the road. If you are still on the fence, check out these 458 Italia facts.  As with all great Ferraris, the recipe was proven on race tracks around the world. Factory teams allowed the world's best drivers to compete in the 458 Challenge cars, Lessons learned allowed for the 458 Speciale to be a proper farewell to the series. Ferrari 458 Italia Six-Speed Manual is 1 of 1

Last month, our friends at European Auto Group showed up with a secret project. In the back of their trailer was a pristine Ferrari F430 Scuderia. I was expecting a twin-turbo kit or maybe bigger cams. But they chose a far more complex challenge. Instead of doing typical mods, they deleted the automatic transmission. Using all Ferrari parts, they removed the transmission hydraulics with the precision of a skilled surgeon. Learning from this achievement, they announced today that their Ferrari 458 Italia six-speed manual is 1 of 1. Nothing about going manual is easy. At least a handful of 6-speed F430 models were built at the factory. However, the 458 Italia and its variants were never intended to have a 3rd pedal. The F430 Scuderia made more power and torque than the base F430, so the team at EAG had to start with building a transmission with upgraded synchros. What Would You Give To Drive This? Then they had to bolt it to a clutch that is light enough to rev while having the grip for any situation. After a few laps, it was easy to understand how many late nights and prototypes they went thru. But why? Ferrari 458 Engine, Horsepower & Specs If you have to ask yourself why a six-speed manual is better than a 7-speed slushbox, you might have low testosterone. Ask your doctor. The hydraulics that works the clutch and shifter are complex, expensive and heavy, so losing them offers several advantages. Ask any 458 Italia owner who has had to replace the F1 pump or actuators. Before dual-clutch boring boxes, every brand experimented with the automated single-clutch transmission. Even the Aston-Martin One-77 was very confused after a short nap. This manual 458 Italia is the one you have been waiting for, so find your 458 Italia below and call EAG at 210-608-5610 Sell My Ferrari 458: Get a Cash Offer Used Ferrari 458 For Sale " width="680"> Related: The ONLY Six-Speed Ferrari F430 Scuderia is For Sale

Ferrari Loses Door in Very Unfortunate Way

We've all seen it before in the movies. Someone is having a bad day, they go to get out of their car, open the door and 'wham,' a car drives by at that very moment. There goes the door. This is exactly what happened to a Ferrari 458 Challenge that was waiting on its way to get loaded up into a trailer. The driver of this car was about to pull into the trailer when they decided to get out really quickly. At this very moment, a Mazda 3 was driving by on the driver's side. It seems the driver didn't hear the protests from people watching it all go down, because he swung open the door just as the Mazda drove by. Goodbye, door. Let this be a reminder to always check those mirrors before getting out of the car. Having no doors may be cool on a Jeep, but not so much on a Ferrari race car. 2011 Ferrari 458 Challenge for Sale at Ferrari of Fort La...

If you have ever wanted to be part of something extraordinary, a Ferrari Challenge Car is your ticket to the ride of a lifetime. It is a rare opportunity when one comes up for sale, so we jumped when Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale uploaded this one.The Ferrari Challenge is a series of races around the world. Privateer drivers battle with dealer-backed teams, leading to a final race in Italy, Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific. Find a few sponsors and you could cover your cost for a full season...Or you could relax knowing you have a red stallion that is FIA approved. This car is eligible to race in many other series, and it deserves to be the centerpiece of your collection. In the past, Challenge cars were built at the dealer, after fitting a roll cage and safety systems. But the 430 Challenge and the 458 Challenge are factory-built race cars. The only parts shared between a 458 Italia and a 458 Challenge are the engine and the lights. To make for great competition, the 4.5-liter was tuned for more torque at low rpm. This was done by giving the intake more room to breathe and replacing the mufflers with straight-pipe exhaust. Finally, the gear ratios were shortened to allow more power to the ground. Horsepower remains at 570, with a screaming 9,000 rpm redline. To drop all unnecessary weight, the interior includes one seat. The body panels are thin layers of carbon fiber, and the brakes are steel instead of carbon ceramic. Lexan is lighter and stronger than glass, and the dealer has a 2nd set of wheels available if needed. This example has only seen 7,848 miles, and it is a steal at $179,900. That includes onboard air jacks, a fire suppression system, and more downforce than you have ever felt before. Dust off your helmet and see if your Nomex still fits, because your greatest race has yet to be run.Are You Worthy Of A Challenge?

Ferrari 458: Facts You Need To Know

Turbochargers are finding their way into everything. The industry is motivated by emissions laws and fuel mileage to build smaller engines with forced induction. Ferrari did away with their 4.5 liter V8 in favor of a 3.8 liter with two turbos. You can't deny the abilities of the 488 GTB and its Spyder, but some of us like to make power the old-fashioned way. That is why the Ferrari 458 demands your attention, 10. End Of The Line It stands as a grand finale to a trio that began with the 360 Modena. The middle child was the F430 series, and lessons learned on both of them were used to build the 458 and its derivatives. The best analogy is the other perfect Italian trio, the Dollars Trilogy from Sergio Leone. All three cars share an aluminum chassis from ALCOA, and the first two even share many body panels. 9. Stop It! Nobody likes a spongy brake pedal, so the 458 was one of the first production cars to have pre-fill brake calipers. Electronics in the ABS system are used to hold the pads only a few millimeters away from the rotor. All cars should have this feature because the 458 has the most responsive left pedal you have ever encountered. It inspires confidence in the car while cutting stress in thick traffic. Ferrari 458 Challenge: Not Civilized 8. Rev It! A few inches behind the seats is a 4.5 liter V8. Physically and dimensionally it is not a large engine. Size isn't everything because this finely tuned machine can spin to 9,000 rpm. Drop down a few gears and it wails like a Formula1 car, because the engine was designed using lessons learned on the track. 7. Value Now that the 488 GTB is gaining popularity, it is making the 458 much more affordable. Prices have dropped to their current levels, but the market has stabilized as our dealers have great offers on certified pre-owned and low-mileage cars. Don't expect them to depreciate any further because of the reasons below. 6. Rear Engine For many 458 owners, it is the first time they have experienced a rear-engined car. It is a truly eye-opening experience. A feeling of unlimited grip will make you order expensive tires and a dash cam to record your daily commute. Understeer can be corrected with the skinny pedal, as long as your passenger remains composed. 5. Maintenance Unlike the F430 and the 360 Modena, the 458 Italia has a timing chain. Timing belts on the previous models are expensive and necessary at least once a year. The 458 Italia has proven to only need oil changes and a yearly brake flush to stay in working order. The flush is needed on cars driven lightly, because the fluid never gets hot enough to boil away condensation. So Ferrari recommends exercising your rotors on a regular basis. Bring your radar detector along! 4. Shift Happens Ever seen a clutch replacement bill for an F430? If you must choose between your child's college tuition or a transmission service, and older Ferrari is not for you. The 458 was the first Ferrari to feature Getrag's dual-clutch gearbox. It is light-years beyond the F1 single disc box, and it can be as smooth or as brutal as you need. 3. Make It Your Own If the 458 ever becomes boring to you, the aftermarket has embraced it with a host of upgrade parts. A new computer will unlock more aggressive engine tuning. The stock exhaust is quite by today's standards, so a pair of headers will antagonize the homeowners association. Our friends at Underground Racing will allow you to drive a twin-turbo flamethrower to work, so give them something to talk about. 2. Choose Your Flavor To make your choice all the much harder, Ferrari built the 458 in several configurations. The 458 Italia is a coupe. Spider is a hardtop convertible. A 458 Speciale is literally a special version with optimized aerodynamics, more power, and less weight. The most desirable is the Speciale A, an "aperta" or convertible version of the Speciale. The racing versions include the 458 Challenge along with GT2 and GT3 models, but they're outside the realm of a daily driver. The only other noteworthy street version is the 458 SP12 EC ordered by Eric Clapton. It looks stunning at the Crossroads! 1. Track Day Every day The Ferrari 458 looks like nothing else on the street or on the track. It is just as imposing at the supermarket as it is leaving pit lane. If you want to embarrass everyone at your local track, the 458 is for you. Take a glance at the GT3 points standings and then look what they are driving, the 458 was born to win.
