McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Horacio Pagani's Ferrari Dream Came Full Circle With The First 275 GTB4

There are plenty of incredible Ferraris that have become timeless icons, representing significant chapters and moments throughout the marque's history and, more importantly, the legacy of Enzo himself. And sure, bearing witness to cars like the Ferrari 250 GTO reach the eight-figure range says a lot about their place in automotive history, but their true value lies in the inspiration they've provided for generations of designers, engineers, and manufacturers. One of those inspired minds is the founder of Pagani Automobili, Horacio Pagani, who recently sat down with Ferrari Magazine for a deep dive into his love for the Ferrari 275, and more specifically, his 275 GTB4. Horacio’s infatuation with the car started more than sixty years ago after seeing a light-blue 275 GTB on the cover of Automundo magazine, when the dream of owning it was purely that for the young Argentinian sketching cars, tinkering with engines, and carving detailed cars out of balsa wood. Once he moved to Italy and began achieving success producing supercars with his own name on the badge, the love for that Ferrari not only grew, but became a reality to own for Horacio. In 2022, Pagani purchased his Ferrari 275 GTB4 from Sotheby’s auction at Rétromobile. Not just another one of the 280 cars produced, chassis #09021 is the very first pre-series example produced and displayed at the Paris Salon de l’Automobile. Delivered by Ferrari to the importer at its Levallois-Perret headquarters, the 275 GTB4 was registered after the motor show and used as a demonstrator for dealership clients and press reviews.That was only the beginning for Horacio Pagani. Before the car could return to the road, it underwent months of historical research with Ferrari Classiche expert Andrea Modena, followed by a restoration by Kessel in Lugano. Even in its remarkably original condition after decades of sitting, Pagani wasn't interested in preserving it. The car hadn't even been started in years, but for someone known for obsessing over the smallest details, originality alone wasn't enough. Every component, finish, and surface had to be brought back to the standard he believed the car deserved.Ironically, the biggest challenge came after the restoration seemed to be finished. Unsatisfied with the new paint, Pagani dug deeper into the car's history with Ferrari Classiche, eventually uncovering a connection to its past. Egidio Bonfatti, one of the craftsmen who painted special-bodied Ferraris at Pietro Drogo's Sports Cars in the 1960s, had quietly kept an original tin of Rosso Rubino paint in his garage for more than half a century, and it was still usable. Ferrari's July 4 Surprise May Bring the Manual Transmission Back to the V12

Recently speaking at Tekion One 2026, the dealer software company's inaugural conference in Las Vegas, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna hinted that Ferrari is preparing to unveil something that blends heritage with forward-looking technology. According to Autocar U.K, His exact description, a combination of something from the past with an eye toward the future, immediately sparked speculation across the automotive world. "In a few weeks, if you can bear with us a little bit, then you will see something new where we put together something from the past with eyes on the future,” he said. Let’s say wait till the fourth of July. It’s really soon." - Benedetto Vigna, CEO, Ferrari The comment points toward one possibility that enthusiasts have been waiting nearly two decades to see: the return of a manual transmission in a front-engined Ferrari V12. The last time Ferrari offered that combination was in the 599 GTB Fiorano, where only 30 manual-equipped examples were produced before it quietly disappeared from the lineup. A private unveiling is expected during the Ferrari Cavalcade, which runs from June 29 through July 6 between Venice and Athens, ahead of a public reveal on July 4, which also marks America's 250th anniversary of independence. The biggest clue came when duPont REGISTRY reported on Ferrari's 13 trademark filings last month submitted to Italy's UIBM on May 20. , a batch that included the names now tied to this story. The filings included four names: 12 Cylinders MM, 12 Cylinders MM Open, 12Cylinders GTO, and 12Cylinders TG. All appear connected to Ferrari's V12 grand touring family. The MM is a clear reference to the Mille Miglia, the legendary Italian road race that has inspired Ferrari naming conventions since the 1950s. The MM Open designation is particularly intriguing because it suggests both coupe and open-top variants could be developed in parallel. Then there is the GTO badge to consider as well. Ferrari has reserved those three letters for only a handful of cars: the 250 GTO, the 288 GTO, and the 599 GTO. But the strongest clues of a manual come from two recent Ferrari patent filings. One, published as US 2026/0160329 A1 (WO 2026/126110), describes a shift-by-wire system centered around a six-speed H-pattern shifter. The concept is similar to the Engage Shift System developed by Koenigsegg for the CC850, where the transmission remains fundamentally automatic while recreating the interaction of a traditional manual gearbox. Drivers can switch between operating modes using dedicated R, N, D, and M controls. The second patent focuses specifically on simulating the clutch pedal itself. Springs, sensors, and a carefully engineered cam profile work together to simulate the resistance and engagement point of a conventional clutch. Not everyone will be convinced by an electronic substitute, however well-engineered. For many enthusiasts, a clutch pedal connected through electronics will never fully replace the mechanical connection of a traditional manual transmission. As for what powers the car, Ferrari has yet to confirm any details, but the most logical candidate remains the 12Cilindri's naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12, which produces 819 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Rumors suggest any gated-shifter setup would be offered alongside the existing transmission. If that proves true, availability is expected to be extremely limited, likely reserved for Ferrari's most established clients through a highly selective allocation process. For now, we have nothing confirmed, beyond Vigna's carefully chosen remarks. Still, the combination of recent trademark filings, detailed patent applications, and the timing of Ferrari's upcoming reveal points toward more than mere speculation. The evidence increasingly suggests that Maranello is preparing a limited-production V12 flagship that blends the appeal of a traditional gated manual with modern transmission technology, potentially in both coupe and open-top forms. Whether it ultimately wears the MM or GTO badge remains to be seen, but all signs point to one of Ferrari's most significant enthusiast-focused launches in years. Watch this space. Ferrari Challenge was first created in the early ‘90s, inviting drivers to participate in a single-make series where they would compete behind the wheel of the 348 Challenge on some of the most celebrated racing circuits, initially in Europe, and soon after in North America and several other regions across the globe. After the 348 Challenge, Ferrari Challenge featured the F355 Challenge, the 360 Challenge, the F430 Challenge, the 458 Challenge and 458 Challenge Evo, the 488 Challenge and 488 Challenge Evo, and most recently, the 296 Challenge. The 2026 season of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America is currently underway, and as it emerges from a racing weekend at the iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the 2027 season calendar for the series has just been announced. Next year, just like in the 2026 season, the opener will take place at The Thermal Club, an exclusive Southern California circuit nestled in the desert, slated for March 10 through March 15 next year. After that, Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America will head to Sonoma, staying in California, for its second round from April 8 to April 11. After that, the championship will head to Texas, taking on the Circuit of the Americas from May 20 to May 23, returning from the 2026 calendar. After that, the championship visits Canada, coming to Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, northeast of Toronto, from June 24 to June 27. The circuit hosted past iterations of the Canadian Grand Prix and is known for its hills. Returning from a one-year absence, the championship will return to Indianapolis after that from July 15 to July 19, and the season will conclude at Watkins Glen from August 26 to August 29. In typical fashion, the culmination of the season will take place with the Ferrari Finali Mondiali, for which the date and the venue are yet to be announced. Ferrari Showcases A New Tailor Made SF90 XX

Ferrari is already known for having some of the most luxurious and desirable vehicles on the market, and there are varying levels of exclusivity among the cars in Ferrari’s lineup. Towards the top are vehicles in the XX program, which previously had been track-only cars, but the SF90 XX marked the first street-legal XX Ferraris. Ferrari is showing off one of the latest SF90 XX examples, and not only is it one of the highly exclusive SF90 XX Stradale cars, it also features a stunning Tailor Made configuration, adding even more to its exclusivity. The powerful supercar is finished in an exterior that combines a striking color, gloss Verde Volterra, with exposed carbon fiber touches, and line details and accents in Nocciola Met 2021, resulting in an exterior that looks like few other Ferraris. Meanwhile, the interior features Alcantara and Ultrasuede textiles, with contrasting stitching, embroidered Cavallino Rampante emblems, and 21 number detailing that matches the exterior. Completing the stunning commission is a plaque on the doorsills, which denotes not only that the vehicle is a Tailor Made creation, but also that it is part of the strictly limited production run of Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale examples as one of just 799 cars. Lewis Hamilton Wins His First F1 Grand Prix With Ferrari

One of the most talked-about moments in recent motorsport history was the announcement that Lewis Hamilton, a driver with undisputed and unparalleled icon status and success in Formula 1, would be leaving the Mercedes-AMG team to join Scuderia Ferrari. Now, the driver has secured his first Grand Prix victory as a Ferrari driver, winning this past weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Not only was it Hamilton’s first Grand Prix win with Scuderia Ferrari, but it was also the team’s first Grand Prix win this season. The moment is especially poignant, as Hamilton’s first win with Ferrari comes at the same circuit where legendary driver Michael Schumacher won his first race with Scuderia Ferrari. For Ferrari, the victorious result at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix marks the 249th win for the team, and for Hamilton, it’s his 106th win as a driver. He’s the 41st driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari. Ferrari says that Hamilton’s victory came thanks to a flawless tire management strategy and three pit stops that were used effectively to set an incredible pace, especially at the end of the race. Starting the race in the front row, Hamilton utilized soft Pirelli Motorsport tires, and took advantage of the Virtual Safety Car on lap 40 to make his final pit stop while maintaining the lead and having fresher tires than many of the competitors. His Scuderia Ferrari HP counterpart, Charles Leclerc, unfortunately had to retire from the race due to a hydraulic issue with only four laps remaining, despite a compelling performance that broke him into the top six for much of the race. In this season’s seven races thus far, Scuderia Ferrari HP has managed to be on the podium six times, but the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix marks the first victory for the team. With the wind in its sails as the season continues, Formula 1 will pause for a week before arriving in Spielberg for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the end of the month. About his maiden victory with Ferrari, Hamilton said, "This is an incredibly special moment. Winning my first race with Ferrari is something I've dreamt about since I was a child, and to finally achieve it feels incredible… This is a day I'll never forget, and I hope it's the first of many wins that we can celebrate together." Enzo vs LaFerrari: Which Halo Ferrari Would You Take?

Ask ten Ferrari people this question and you'll start an argument that lasts all afternoon. The Enzo or the LaFerrari. Both were the best car Ferrari knew how to build at the time, but they came from two different worlds, and which one you'd pick says a lot about what you actually want out of a Ferrari. Start with the Enzo, because it really is the older soul here. It landed in 2002 wearing the founder's name, and Ferrari basically took its Formula 1 program and built a road car around it without sanding off the edges. The engine is the whole point: a 6.0-liter V12, no turbos, no electric help, just 660 hp arriving at a frankly absurd 7,800 rpm. At the time nobody had ever put a more powerful naturally aspirated engine in a road car. Pininfarina handled the body, and the result still looks like it arrived from somewhere ahead of us. It hit 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds and ran to 218 mph, though numbers were never the point. Ferrari planned 349, demand pushed it to 399, and a final 400th car was built and donated to charity. Michael Schumacher even helped dial it in at Fiorano, which tells you how seriously Maranello took it. The Enzo asks a lot of whoever's driving, and that's exactly why people who own one tend to never let go. Then came 2013, and the LaFerrari changed the conversation completely. This model was Ferrari deciding the future ran through electrification, and proving the idea at the very top of the range first. It showed up at Geneva as the company's first hybrid production car, pairing a 6.3-liter V12 with the F1-derived HY-KERS system for a combined 950 horsepower. That made it the most powerful road Ferrari ever. The performance is almost silly: 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds, comfortably quicker than the Enzo, with active aero quietly working away to keep the thing glued down. It was also the moment Ferrari stopped sending its halo car to Pininfarina, designing it in-house under Flavio Manzoni instead. The Enzo is the last of the old guard, the final great naturally aspirated halo car before the electric era arrived, and there's a purity to it that some collectors will always chase.
