McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Ferrari Drops New Film With Nicholas Hoult

With appearances in films like Superman (2025), and Nosferatu (2024), and the TV sensation Skins, British actor Nicholas Hoult has had a career in which he has played some intense roles. However, outside of acting, another thrilling pursuit of Hoult’s is racing, and Ferrari captured his journey as a first-time racer in a new film that is available on its YouTube channel, Edge Of Control. The new film captures Hoult’s journey through his first wheel-to-wheel racing weekend, which took place at The Thermal Club, an exclusive circuit in Southern California known for its challenging layout and its stunning location. While Hoult was racing for the first time there, his own personal relationship with Ferrari stretches back much further. In his childhood, Hoult had a love for F1 and an admiration for legendary Scuderia Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher, which he shared with his father. On the set of About A Boy, Hoult rode in a Ferrari 550 Maranello for the first time, and that passion evolved into a desire to take on the track, inspired by fellow actor and Ferrari Challenge driver Michael Fassbender. In the film, Hoult compares the moments of preparation for racing to preparation as an actor, relying on his own skill to focus and see him through the task ahead. At the end of the Thermal Club racing weekend, Hoult’s qualifying result of fourth, as well as his fifth- and eighth-place finishes in Race 1 and Race 2, were an especially positive takeaway for a first-time racer in a field of more seasoned drivers. Behind the wheel of the Ferrari 296 Challenge, Hoult raced in the Coppa Shell Am class, making his official Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America debut at Thermal. However, his time with the track began much earlier, specifically in 2020 when he entered Ferrari’s Corso Pilota program. With the non-competitive Club Challenge, Hoult was able to build mileage and experience not only on Thermal, but on other tracks seen in the Ferrari Challenge series, like Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, and Daytona. Ferrari Announces Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America 2027 Calendar

Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America 2027 Tracks Announced

Ferrari Challenge was first created in the early ‘90s, inviting drivers to participate in a single-make series where they would compete behind the wheel of the 348 Challenge on some of the most celebrated racing circuits, initially in Europe, and soon after in North America and several other regions across the globe. After the 348 Challenge, Ferrari Challenge featured the F355 Challenge, the 360 Challenge, the F430 Challenge, the 458 Challenge and 458 Challenge Evo, the 488 Challenge and 488 Challenge Evo, and most recently, the 296 Challenge. The 2026 season of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America is currently underway, and as it emerges from a racing weekend at the iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the 2027 season calendar for the series has just been announced. Next year, just like in the 2026 season, the opener will take place at The Thermal Club, an exclusive Southern California circuit nestled in the desert, slated for March 10 through March 15 next year. After that, Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli North America will head to Sonoma, staying in California, for its second round from April 8 to April 11. After that, the championship will head to Texas, taking on the Circuit of the Americas from May 20 to May 23, returning from the 2026 calendar. After that, the championship visits Canada, coming to Mosport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, northeast of Toronto, from June 24 to June 27. The circuit hosted past iterations of the Canadian Grand Prix and is known for its hills. Returning from a one-year absence, the championship will return to Indianapolis after that from July 15 to July 19, and the season will conclude at Watkins Glen from August 26 to August 29. In typical fashion, the culmination of the season will take place with the Ferrari Finali Mondiali, for which the date and the venue are yet to be announced. Lewis Hamilton Wins His First F1 Grand Prix With Ferrari

One of the most talked-about moments in recent motorsport history was the announcement that Lewis Hamilton, a driver with undisputed and unparalleled icon status and success in Formula 1, would be leaving the Mercedes-AMG team to join Scuderia Ferrari. Now, the driver has secured his first Grand Prix victory as a Ferrari driver, winning this past weekend’s Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Not only was it Hamilton’s first Grand Prix win with Scuderia Ferrari, but it was also the team’s first Grand Prix win this season. The moment is especially poignant, as Hamilton’s first win with Ferrari comes at the same circuit where legendary driver Michael Schumacher won his first race with Scuderia Ferrari. For Ferrari, the victorious result at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix marks the 249th win for the team, and for Hamilton, it’s his 106th win as a driver. He’s the 41st driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari. Ferrari says that Hamilton’s victory came thanks to a flawless tire management strategy and three pit stops that were used effectively to set an incredible pace, especially at the end of the race. Starting the race in the front row, Hamilton utilized soft Pirelli Motorsport tires, and took advantage of the Virtual Safety Car on lap 40 to make his final pit stop while maintaining the lead and having fresher tires than many of the competitors. His Scuderia Ferrari HP counterpart, Charles Leclerc, unfortunately had to retire from the race due to a hydraulic issue with only four laps remaining, despite a compelling performance that broke him into the top six for much of the race. In this season’s seven races thus far, Scuderia Ferrari HP has managed to be on the podium six times, but the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix marks the first victory for the team. With the wind in its sails as the season continues, Formula 1 will pause for a week before arriving in Spielberg for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix at the end of the month. About his maiden victory with Ferrari, Hamilton said, "This is an incredibly special moment. Winning my first race with Ferrari is something I've dreamt about since I was a child, and to finally achieve it feels incredible… This is a day I'll never forget, and I hope it's the first of many wins that we can celebrate together." Ferrari Unveils SF-26 as Clean-Sheet Grand Prix Car for 2026 F1 Reset

It’s been just over a month since a dramatic F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi, but the next season is already starting to gain momentum with the reveal of 2026 contenders, already underway. Just days after we saw teasers of Ferrari’s next F1 challenger and its engine firing up, the SF-26 was revealed at Fiorano earlier today. This is the Italian marque’s 72nd Formula 1 grand prix car and the first conceived entirely around the new 2026 regulations, which will reset Formula 1 as you know it. These rules mandate lighter cars, a rethink of the aerodynamics, and a new hybrid balance, all in a bid to deliver closer racing. The SF-26 does away with ground-effect aerodynamics entirely, a decisive break driven by the 2026 regulations. Ferrari has reworked the chassis to cut mass and reduce drag, then wrapped it in simpler bodywork. Power comes from Ferrari’s new 067/6 turbocharged 1.6-liter V6, a 90-degree unit with a single turbocharger that puts out 400 kW or ~536 horsepower. <- Gallery -> But the most consequential change sits in the power unit. Ferrari’s new hybrid system swaps the MGU-H and raises MGU-K output to 350 kW, which is roughly about 469 horsepower, bringing combined output to roughly 1,000 horsepower. Electrical energy now plays a much larger role in overall performance, demanding closer integration between the engine and chassis, influencing everything from cooling layouts and packaging to energy deployment strategies. The SF-26 marks the beginning of a new era for both Formula 1 and Ferrari, with new regulations introduced in the same year for the chassis and the power unit, as well as new fuels and new tyre sizes. This car is the result of a tremendous team effort and represents the start of a completely new journey, built around a different set of rules that inevitably brings a number of unknowns. Ferrari has also reinforced this reset with its latest livery, which sees the return of gloss paint for the first time, after seven years of matte finishes. Ferrari brings a special livery to the Italian Grand Prix. This year’s Formula 1 season is coming to Monza this weekend, one of the most legendary race tracks in the world and an undoubtedly integral venue to Formula 1 legacy. For Ferrari, one of the most historic teams in the world’s most prestigious racing series, the Prancing Horse is celebrating a special racing weekend at Monza. Specifically, it was 50 years ago in 1975 when Austrian driver Niki Lauda won his first World Championship title at the end of the Italian Grand Prix. Finishing third in the race with Clay Regazzoni winning the race in the other Ferrari, the moment was a glorious milestone for Ferrari, securing both the Drivers’ and Constructors' titles for the season. That success would kick off a high that Scuderia Ferrari would ride until 1979, and to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Scuderia Ferrari has recreated the livery that the 312 T F1 car wore when it emerged victorious in 1975. Racing drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be behind the wheel of the SF-25, wearing a special historically inspired livery that features a shade of red like the one used in 1975, white longitudinal stripes, the drivers’ names in cursive script, racing numbers in black on a white background, with special treatments given to the rear wings, engine covers, and wheels to evoke the 312 T. In addition, the entire team will sport racing kit and suits inspired by what Scuderia Ferrari had in 1975, which was developed in partnership with longtime Scuderia Ferrari partner, PUMA. A replica collection of the special apparel will be available to the public, as well. At the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, fans will be able to see the 312 T that Niki Lauda drove to his first championship victory starting tomorrow to celebrate the anniversary, as well, alongside a car featuring the special livery. Ferrari Unveils The New SF-25 F1 Car

Ferrari unveils its latest pinnacle racing colors. With roots firmly planted in the motorsport world, and even the ticker symbol “RACE” on the stock market, Ferrari puts racing at the center of its various efforts. However, within Ferrari’s racing legacy, the pinnacle is its Formula 1 team: Scuderia Ferrari. Having been a staple of the most prestigious motorsport in the world from the beginning, Ferrari’s car for each coming F1 season is an anticipated announcement, and the new Ferrari F1 car is here: the Ferrari SF-25. For Ferrari specifically, the 2025 Formula 1 season is a highly anticipated one, being the first season in which Lewis Hamilton will be driving for Scuderia Ferrari, and along with Charles Leclerc, he will be piloting the 71st Ferrari F1 car, which is a completely new car with new technology compared to previous vehicles. The front suspension is switched from a pushrod to a pull rod design, further optimizing aerodynamics, and the reliability of the power unit was optimized as well. Compared to previous seasons, the color of the new Ferrari SF-25 F1 car is quite different, adopting a deeper burgundy than the previous bright red color that Ferrari F1 cars historically sport, with a matte finish as well. Glossy livery details provide contrast, and are opposite to the 499P endurance racing hypercar, which uses matte livery details on a gloss body. With the new F1 car from Ferrari officially unveiled, it’s heading to Bahrain for the only official pre-season test after a shakedown on Ferrari’s home circuit of Fiorano. Ferrari Unveils The 2025 Livery Of The 499P Hypercar

Ferrari unveils the new livery of its endurance racing hero. Two years ago, Ferrari made an incredibly triumphant return to the top class of the endurance racing world after an immense 50-year hiatus that started in 1973. Coming back to the world’s most renowned endurance racing stage, the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Ferrari 499P after 50 years, Ferrari won the race with an incredible one-two finish in 2023, making its long-awaited return a truly epic event. In 2024, Ferrari came back again, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans yet again. Now, Ferrari is coming back for its third year at the top class of endurance racing since its hiatus for the 2025 season, and has revealed the livery of its 499P racing hypercar for the new season. The crews for cars number 50 and 51 remain unchanged, while the livery remains instantly recognizable as Ferrari’s racing hero, while featuring nods to Ferrari’s rich racing history. Details of the livery echo the Ferrari 312 PB, Ferrari’s previous top-class endurance racer that competed in 1973 right before Ferrari’s endurance racing hiatus began. With a new revised livery featuring the same details that the Ferrari 499P has become known for, as well as various references to Ferrari’s longstanding motorsport traditions, the new livery of the Ferrari 499P hopes to be the first one to cross the line at the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, continuing the Prancing Horse’s epic winning streak.
