There’s a reason Ferraris age like a fine wine rather than being forgotten in the natural flow of supercar and hypercar releases, take icons like the Testarossa and Enzo for example. Even as modern supercars become more powerful and complex, Ferrari still approaches styling with the same sense instilled by Enzo Ferrari all those years ago. The cars coming out of Maranello are built around its legacy and the idea that a Ferrari should feel special before the engine even starts.
That still remains true, with Ferrari once again earning major recognition at the Red Dot Awards. This year, the spotlight shines on the one-off Ferrari SC40, which took home the coveted “Best of the Best” award for product design.
The SC40 stands out because it is a true one-of-a-kind, created in collaboration between the owner and Ferrari’s dedicated Special Projects program. Inspiration clearly traces back to the legendary Ferrari F40, but cements itself in the marque’s stable without being overly sentimental. It uses the bones of the Ferrari 296 series while completely reshaping its personality through sharp lines, squared surfaces, a long nose, and a fixed rear wing.
Inside, the use of carbon-Kevlar, Alcantara, and fabrics keeps the cabin focused and purposeful. And under the hood, Ferrari’s 830-horsepower hybrid V6 delivers the same performance as the 296 GTB/GTS, proving that plug-in power is the future of supercar engineering. The SC40 wasn’t Ferrari’s only winner this year either. Cars like the Ferrari Amalfi and Ferrari 296 Speciale also earned Red Dot recognition.
