McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The House That Newman/Haas Built: 1991 Lola-Chevrolet T91/00

Presented by RM Sotheby's. Newman/Haas Racing’s 1991 CART PPG Indy Car World Series-winning chassis. A RACING DYNASTY The landscape of American auto racing is textured by great families. The Unsers, Pettys, and Earnhardts established multiple generations of championship-caliber drivers whose legendary exploits on the racetrack are woven into the very fiber of motorsport. One name, however, rises above to be synonymous with speed itself: Andretti. The patriarch, Mario, needs no introduction. With a resume that includes Formula One World Champion, Indy 500-winner, Daytona 500 Champion, and Le Mans class-winner, he is undoubtably one of the greatest men to have ever climbed behind the wheel of a racecar. Following in his footsteps would seem insurmountable, yet his son Michael proved to possess incredible abilities behind the wheel. Beginning his Indy Car career with the Kraco Racing squad in 1983, a run of podium finishes the following season confirmed his talent within the sport. Mario Andretti had established the street circuit in Long Beach, California as a successful hunting ground with wins in 1977, 1984, and 1985, and in 1986 Michael would keep the family winning streak alive by securing his very first win within the CART PPG Indy Car World Series. The 1986 season would result in Michael’s first runner-up finish in the championship; the following year, he would achieve the same result. In 1989 Michael joined the Newman/Haas team alongside his father, and the two shared great success together. By 1991, Michael was on a roll, having finished 3rd and 2nd in the championship standings the prior two seasons. After being the bridesmaid on three occasions, Michael was determined to not let the ultimate prize slip through his fingers. While the 1991 campaign began with a slow start, a dramatic Indianapolis 500 saw Michael finish runner-up to the legendary Rick Mears, who secured his record-tying fourth win at the Brickyard. From that point onwards, Michael dominated the remainder of the season. Achieving eight wins out of 17 races, the final six events of the season saw a three-race win streak, two 3rd-place finishes, and a final win at the last race. A true stamp of authority, this display of talent further added to the Andretti legend and dismissed naysayers who said it could not be done. THE LOLA T91/00 Lola’s dominance with the T90/00 in 1990, with 13 wins out of 16 events, meant that 1991’s T91/00 would be a refinement of the design which had led to so much success. While retaining the same dimensions and monocoque design as the T90/00, the latest model was understood to have a more consistent shape and stronger construction thanks to the new climate-controlled autoclave installed at the Lola factory. An aluminum honeycomb was again utilized for the tub, extending from the driver’s hips to the pedals for protection in the event of a heavy accident. In addition, the pickup points for the suspension were revised.To meet the demands of the various disciplines, a high-downforce configuration was available for short ovals, road courses, or street circuits. For the superspeedways, alternative suspension geometry was utilized to extend the wheelbase, and low-drag wings worked to slice through the air. The tried-and-tested Ilmor-Chevrolet 2.65-liter V-8, featuring a turbocharger and 32 valves, served as the heart of the Newman-Haas cars during the 1991 season. MICHAEL’S CHASSIS 38 Used during the month of May in the leadup to the 74th running of the Indianapolis 500, chassis 38 accumulated 725 miles of test running between May 6 and May 13. A week later it was entered in the Miller Genuine Draft 200 at the famed Milwaukee Mile oval in Wisconsin. Qualifying 3rd behind his father, the Andrettis would quickly jump in front of pole-sitter Rick Mears. John Andretti, son of Mario’s twin brother Aldo, additionally started the race in the top five. All three would remain up front, and after Mears suffered from an engine failure, history would be made: For the first and only time, the Andretti family swept the podium. After leading the most laps, Michael finished 1st, followed by his father and his cousin. Chassis 38 was next entered in the Valvoline Detroit Grand Prix on the tight, unforgiving temporary street circuit. After securing a pole position, Michael fought for the lead against Dutchman Arie Luyendyk, but failed to finish the race. The following week at The Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at Portland International Raceway in Oregon, Chassis 38 was once again used. Michael lined up 5th on the grid that day, and in a spectacular display of his talent, he took the lead on the opening lap with a first-turn dive. He went on to lead the most laps that day, securing him additional bonus points.The chassis was next entered in the Marlboro Grand Prix Meadowlands, just outside of New York City. After starting in the top five, Michael battled up front and was running in the podium places at half-race distance. Unfortunately, his engine began to suffer a misfire, ultimately leading to his retirement from the race. Michael’s trio of race wins began at the Molson Indy Vancouver on the street circuit of the Canadian city. This would be the final race weekend for Chassis 38, and once again, pole position was achieved. Bobby Rahal, Michael’s main opponent, sat eight points ahead in the championship and quickly snatched the lead of the race. Another scrap resulted in Michael regaining the lead, yet he would spend the later portion of the race climbing back through traffic from 3rd place. Ultimately finishing 1st, his pole position and most laps led resulted in maximum points for the race weekend. Today, the car is set up in speedway configuration and accompanied by workshop manual, laptop, and cable. A highly significant racing car from the high-watermark-era of Indy Car racing, Chassis 38 helped secure success for the second generation of the Andretti family dynasty. THE LION Nigel Mansell, one of the most tenacious and thrilling drivers to have ever competed in Formula One, developed his reputation through fearless overtakes; by the early 1990s, he had finished runner-up in the championship three times. It was only a matter of time before he would secure the sport’s top prize. In 1992 the Williams team unleashed the dominant FW14B, quite possibly the most technologically advanced car to contest the Formula One World Championship to that point. This spectacular machine allowed Mansell to secure nine Grand Prix victories out of 17 events, and thus, the Drivers’ Championship. His teammate, Riccardo Patrese, finished 2nd with half the points tally of the champion. " width="680"> After finally achieving his lifelong ambition, and with supreme confidence in his abilities, Mansell made the decision to cross the Atlantic to test his abilities against the top open-wheel drivers in the United States. Signing with championship-caliber Newman/Haas Racing, his teammate would be none other than the legend himself, Mario Andretti. This was indeed a fateful reunion, calling back to Nigel’s earliest days on the Grand Prix circuit: In 1980, Mansell secured his first race seat with the Lotus organization after a promising run as a test driver. He would contest three Grands Prix alongside Andretti and Elio De Angelis, with little success due to a lack of experience and reliability. Now, with over 10 years of experience in his back pocket, Mansell set to prove his abilities around the ovals, road courses, and street circuits of the PPG Indy Car World Series. In addition to sharing the garage with a legendary teammate, his competition throughout the season included Al Unser Jr., Bobby Rahal, Arie Luyendyk, the young Paul Tracy, and another former F1 champion: Emerson Fittipaldi. As the season progressed, the Brazilian proved to be Mansell’s greatest adversary, resulting in a number of unforgettable on-track battles. Never too far from drama, the Englishman suffered a devastating crash before the second event at the demanding one-mile oval in Phoenix Arizona. The resulting back injury necessitated surgery. Adding insult to this literal injury, Mansell was denied the opportunity to run his first oval race and gain crucial experience before attempting the Indianapolis 500. Despite this setback, Mansell would partake in the Indy 500. Close to the end, while leading the race, a yellow flag gave Fittipaldi and Luyendyk the opportunity to close up on Mansell. Pressing their advantage to the end, the pair finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, while Mansell took 3rd.Achieving five victories, Mansell conquered the multi-discipline season with an average finishing position of 6.2, and by season’s end, Mansell finished just eight points ahead of runner-up Fittipaldi. For the first time in the history of motor racing, one driver reigned supreme as the uncontested open-wheel champion of the world. THE LOLA T93/00 Largely a development of the successful T92/00 model, the T93/00 featured a number of aerodynamic and mechanical improvements over its predecessor. Up front, the central section of the front wing rose to meet an extended, needle-like nose. Ford-specification cars featured a unique engine cowl which sat at a lower profile, allowing for greater air flow. The car utilized all-carbon fiber construction, with a monocoque tub and double-wishbone suspension connected to inboard springs on all four corners. To meet the demands of the various disciplines, a high-downforce configuration was available for short ovals, road courses, or street circuits. For the superspeedways, alternative suspension geometry was utilized to extend the wheelbase, and low-drag wings worked to slice through the air. The previous year, Newman/Haas had successfully adopted the Ford XB engine into their Lola, with Michael Andretti achieving five wins throughout the season. In 1993, this turbocharged, dual-overhead-camshaft V-8 engine again served as the heart of the racecar. RED FIVE This Lola T93/00, Chassis 5, participated in seven races throughout the 1993 PPG Indy Car World Series. Beginning with the very first event of the year, the Australian FAI Indy Car Grand Prix at the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit, Mansell showed his level of skill by securing bonus points with a pole position and the race win. A momentous result, he was the first Indy Car rookie to win his first race. The chassis was next utilized at the Miller Genuine Draft 200 at the Milwaukee Mile. The oldest operating speedway in the world, this one-mile oval with nine degrees of banking very much resembles a scaled-down version of the Brickyard. After gaining much-needed experience at the 500-mile event, Nigel secured his first oval win of the season.Chassis 5 would make its next appearance contesting the Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at Portland International speedway. A pole position secured bonus points for Mansell, and a 2nd-place finish helped to maintain his championship lead. The Molson Indy Toronto proved to be Mansell’s most difficult race weekend of the season. In the sessions preceding the race, the Englishman suffered two crashes at the first turn, greatly diminishing his chances of success. After 60 laps bogged down in the midfield, a wastegate failure caused Chassis 5’s first and only retirement for the season. Fortunes would change at the second 500-mile event of the season. The Marlboro 500 at the two-mile Michigan International Speedway was Indycar’s fastest event at the time. The Newman/Haas cars proved to be the class of the field, with Andretti taking the pole at 234.2 mph, followed by Mansell. Arie Luyendyk took the first spot on the second row, nearly four mph down on the front duo. Despite suffering from a splitting headache, the grueling race resulted in Mansell’s first 500-mile victory and second oval win of the season. Andretti took the runner-up position, marking the teammates’ only joint appearance on the podium. Starting alongside Paul Tracy at the Texaco/Havoline 200, Chassis 5 helped Mansell navigate the formidable four-mile Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The lengthy track makes fuel management a key component of success, and the Newman/Haas team kept Mansell on a tight strategy. Unfortunately, he was unable to take on the charging Tracy, and the Englishman settled for a respectable 2nd. The final event in which Chassis 5 entered proved to be the most consequential. The Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix at the Nazareth Speedway would be the final oval event of the calendar, and Mansell’s sweep of the previous three oval events set up a prime opportunity to secure the title. Starting on the pole, Nigel’s chances looked good, but once the green flag waved, Fittipaldi and Tracy darted ahead, leaving Mansell to settle for 3rd. As the race progressed, he battled through traffic to retake the lead—and ultimately the checkered flag. Pulling into victory lane, the Englishman was elated, having achieved what no one had done before: In that moment, he was the reigning Formula One and Indy Car grand champion. Standing as a monument to this feat, this Newman/Haas Lola T93/00 is a deeply significant racing machine worthy of a place of honor in any collection with an open-wheel focus. These auction results prove that there’s nothing quite like a stunning classic. At the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania, RM Sotheby's held its 16th annual auction at the venue simultaneously with the Antique Automobile Club of America’s Eastern Division Fall Meet. The sale focused on pre-war and brass-era cars that capture the legendary glamor of the time, and it seems that the passion for these cars has yet to fade, as the sale was an incredible success. Of all the lots up for sale, 94% were sold, featuring iconic classics from a mythical age in automotive history. The fourth-highest was a 1931 Marmon Sixteen Convertible Sedan by LeBaron, which sold for $330,000. After that, a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Pall Mall Tourer by Merrimac for $297,000 rounded out the top 5, followed by a 1941 Packard Custom Super Eight One Eighty Convertible Victoria by Darrin for $264,000 and a 1987 Buick Grand National GNX for $231,000. After that, a 1931 Cadillac V-12 Convertible Coupe by Fleetwood for $198,000 came in at eighth-highest, followed by a 1934 Packard Super Eight Coupe Roadster for $192,500 and a 1958 Buick Limited Convertible that rounded out the top 10 for $187,000. For the performance specialists at McLaren, the Speedtail continues to make its popular appearance as one of the most rare and exclusive hypercars to roll off the brand’s production line. The McLaren Speedtail initially made its debut in 2018 as a limited-production hybrid sports car, with only 106 chassis produced for a special list of clientele.
