2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 by Zagato1319577

RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 by Zagato

Image with size : 1140x570 Presented by RM Sotheby's. RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 2003 Aston Martin DB AR1 by Zagato Following a decades-long hiatus, Aston Martin rekindled its partnership with Italian coachbuilder Zagato in the early 2000s as then-owner Ford Motor Company sought to reinvigorate interest in the British brand and boost sales. Using the already stunning DB7 as a starting point, Zagato had quite the challenge in creating an even more alluring limited-production grand tourer. The Italian design house did not disappoint with the resulting DB7 Zagato coupe and DB AR1 roadster now widely considered two of the most attractive Aston Martins ever made. Although the coupes were only available in Asian and European markets, the roadster was produced specifically for the American market, hence the “AR1” designation, signifying “American Roadster 1.” First shown at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show, the DB AR1 remained true to the design of its coupe sibling, albeit in an exciting fully open format, namely with twin cowls behind the front seats echoing the “double bubble” roof of the coupe. The roadster body was constructed primarily from steel with select panels, primarily the bumpers and spoilers, crafted in aluminum for weight saving. Conceived with sunny climates in mind, the AR1 had no provision for a roof of any sort and was only equipped with a simple rain cover to protect the interior when parked. The DB AR1 featured much of the same specifications at its closed Zagato sibling, including the 435-horsepower V-12 engine, an active sport exhaust with rear muffler bypass valves, twin AP Racing clutch, and Brembo four-piston disc brakes at all four corners. The active sport exhaust system provided a distinctive note, heightening the excitement of the required open-air driving. To produce a wider track, designers employed specially designed, offset 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama tires. The DB AR1 was well received by the US market with all 99 examples selling within weeks of its debut. Presented in unique Seafoam Green over Fawn quilted leather, the rare example presented here is number 97 of 99 produced. A commemorative plaque displaying its production number is built into the rocker-panel sills. Truly breathtaking from any angle, this example shows just over 900 documented miles from new. Standard luxurious appointments include electronically controlled sport seats, Becker AM/FM stereo system with six-disc CD changer and recently serviced air-conditioning. A copy of the car’s window sticker lists factory options of embroidered floormats, power folding mirrors, aluminum gearshift knob and switches, roadster wheels, first-aid kit, and a fire extinguisher. Factory ownership, service, and warranty books, a trunk-mounted umbrella, and a copy of the window sticker are included, as is a handwritten notebook kept by the late Neil DeAtley detailing every wash and service performed during his near decade of ownership. DeAtley was a renowned collector and race team owner whose Trans Am team achieved championship status in the 1980s. A truly rare find melding the best British pedigree with stunning Italian design, this DB AR1 Zagato presents an exciting opportunity for the Aston Martin enthusiasts to own among the most desirable models of the era from the British marque. This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, kicking off the 2023 collector car auction calendar 26 January. View more and register to bid online at rmsothebys.com today. 2022 Maserati MC201314236

By Edward Jones –  January 22, 2023

RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 2022 Maserati MC20

Image with size : 1140x570 Presented by RM Sotheby's. RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 2022 Maserati MC20 The landmark MC20 signals a renewed focus for Maserati as the Italian automaker seeks to reestablish itself in motorsports and ascend to the uppermost echelon of supercar manufacturers. Upon its unveiling, Maserati called it the “halo car that has marked the start of a new era for the Trident brand.” Fittingly, it also debuted a new trident logo for the company. Maserati has been without a supercar since the Enzo Ferrari-based MC12 ceased production in 2005. Like its predecessor, the MC20 features a mid-engine layout for superior balance, a carbon-fiber unibody to keep weight down, and impressive “butterfly” doors that open upward. But instead of a 6.0-liter Ferrari-derived V-12 engine behind the cabin, there is an all-new “Nettuno” 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6. Developed by Maserati entirely in-house in Modena, Italy, it features an innovative, twin injection, pre-chamber combustion system derived from Formula One engines and is connected to an eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission. With 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque on tap, the 3,307-pound super coupe can sprint from 0–60 mph in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 202 mph. As with the previous MC12, Dallara contributed to the MC20’s development, devising the carbon-fiber chassis and aerodynamic components. After 2,000 hours of wind-tunnel testing and over 1,000 hours of computational fluid dynamics simulations, Maserati and Dallara were able to create a clean and elegant aesthetic devoid of obtrusive aerodynamic appendages. Vents on the hood and rear fenders blend perfectly into the bodywork, while the discreet rear spoiler—fixed rather than movable, as often seen on cars of this caliber—works in conjunction with the under-body diffuser to enhance the up-washing of air channeled beneath the car. To create a clean and elegant design, Maserati divided the car into two parts visually. The upper portion, where aesthetic considerations were paramount, is finished in one of six newly developed colors exclusive to the MC20, while the lower portion in black was focused on improving aerodynamics. With this approach, the MC20 pulls off a measure of elegance and refinement not often seen in this category, where the overriding goals of outright performance and speed usually create extreme designs with numerous scoops, strakes, and wings. What’s more, the use of carbon fiber, used for its light weight and superior rigidity, allowed greater stylistic freedom. The front-hinged “butterfly” doors, for example, would have been impossible to achieve with press-formed metal, according to Maserati. Though absolutely intended to push the limits of performance, the MC20 does not compromise on its ability to comfortably accommodate occupants, offering a generous cargo holds at both the front and rear of the vehicle. Inside, the theme of elegant minimalism continues with a cockpit clearly designed around a driver fixated on the business of driving. The uncluttered dashboard houses two 10-inch screens, one with digital instrumentation and another centrally located in the dash but canted toward the driver. Switchgear is minimal, with most controls located on the steering wheel and a smattering on the central tunnel. Most prominent is the driving-mode selector, with a design inspired by a luxury watch. In terms of materials, Maserati chose a matte finish for the carbon-fiber trim to create a more “tailored, fabric-like look,” while the seats, door cards, and other parts of the interior were finished in Alcantara, a high-tech Italian fabric prized for its combination of softness, durability, and grip. From the outset, Maserati made it clear that the MC20 would be available as both coupe and convertible—the latter called the MC20 Cielo—with an electric propulsion system also in the works. Total annual production for both the coupe and convertible is reported to be around 1,400 units. The Maserati MC20 offered here is practically new, showing only 117 miles on the odometer at cataloguing time. Furthering its appeal is the stunning color scheme. The exterior is finished in stunning Rosso Vincente, a deep metallic three-layer paint option that costs $10,000. Meanwhile, the interior was optioned with two-tone brown and black Cuoio upholstery, also at extra expense. The list of desirable factory options continues with a $5,000 carbon-fiber engine cover and a $4,000 suspension lifter that raises and lowers the front of the car to protect the underbody, $1,500 20-inch Birdcage Glossy Black Diamond wheels, $1,200 red brake calipers, blind-spot detection, embroidered trident logos in the headrests, heated seats, and auto-dimming exterior mirrors. Exquisitely equipped from the factory with $27,750 worth of options and in effectively new condition with just over 100 miles showing on the odometer, this MC20 is brimming with appeal and provides an excellent opportunity for the discerning collector or performance-car enthusiast seeking a more refined and luxurious experience at the upper end of the supercar spectrum. This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, kicking off the 2023 collector car auction calendar 26 January. View more and register to bid online at rmsothebys.com today. 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S1323984

By Edward Jones –  January 21, 2023

RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S

Image with size : 1140x570 Presented by RM Sotheby's. RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S Porsche built its reputation and enduring legacy on air-cooled engine performance, starting with the 356. This was followed in 1964 by the arrival of an evolutionary six-cylinder successor called the type 901 and badged as the 911. One of the most successful stories in automotive history, with a continuous production run nearing 60 years, the 911 offered a near-perfect blend of timeless looks, balanced handling, chassis and engine reliability, and performance perfectly suited to both the road and the track. As air-cooled 911 development continued, Porsche occasionally debuted limited-production, high-performance variants to widespread acclaim. These included the Carrera RS in 1973, the type 930 Turbo in 1975, the all-wheel-drive variant of the type 964, and, finally, the ultimate iteration of air-cooled technology, the type 993 Turbo S—recognized by many enthusiasts as the ultimate air-cooled Porsche. The type 993 Porsche 911 Turbo S provided a dramatic and fitting final chapter for the air-cooled era, being the last air-cooled 911 Turbo built by Porsche. A true limited-production model, 183 examples were manufactured for North America, each carefully and uniquely prepared by Porsche’s Exclusive department with bespoke features and numerous engine and chassis upgrades. Powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six engine featuring an alloy crankcase and cylinder heads, the Turbo S received larger twin KKK K24 turbochargers for instant throttle response and a new Bosch Motronic engine-management system modified to handle the additional output, which increased to 424 horsepower at 6,250 rpm for the US market. A secondary oil cooler was also added to better dissipate heat. Many of the 993 Turbo S’s technical advancements were adapted from the legendary 959, including electronically controlled all-wheel drive—a first for the Porsche Turbo model. Stopping power for the Turbo S came from larger cross-drilled, multi-piston, ventilated disc brakes. To prevent brake fade during intense, extended driving sessions, Porsche added discrete air ducts near the fog lamps on the front valance and on the rear fenders above the wheels. Yellow brake calipers helped identify the Turbo S, along with a new “Aerokit Turbo II” front end and an enlarged twin-blade fixed rear wing with integrated vents feeding air to the intercooler. A wide-body design helped accommodate larger 18-inch alloy wheels, while the engine sang through four exhaust pipes. An upgraded six-speed manual transaxle helped the Turbo S achieve 0–60 in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 184 mph. This attractive Turbo S pleasingly features factory-correct finishes of Ocean Blue Metallic over Cashmere Beige with deviating Midnight Blue leather. The window sticker on file lists numerous options, including a carbon-fiber and leather steering wheel, a digital sound package with remote CD changer, supple leather front and rear, lumbar support for the driver’s seat, and headrests embossed with the Porsche crest. Production of this vehicle was completed in March of 1998 and the car sold new through Roger Beasley Porsche in Austin, Texas. Over the next two decades it was sparingly used, with just 22,017 showing on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. Service invoices from 2013 through 2015 document a shifter repair, clutch pressure reservoir replacement, and repair of the air-conditioning system. Also included is a copy of a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Exhilarating performance, one-year, US-only production status, advanced 959-inspired engineering, bespoke features, and assembly by Porsche Exclusive with upgraded factory components throughout, the Turbo S came together in one definitive sports car that only select few Porsche enthusiasts could acquire in 1997. The serious collector seeking an exceptionally uncommon, elegant, and powerful turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Porsche could do no better than this fine example, the final evolution of Porsche’s air-cooled tradition, heralding an end to what many aficionados consider as the 911’s greatest era. This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, kicking off the 2023 collector car auction calendar 26 January. View more and register to bid online at rmsothebys.com today. 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone1324114

Image with size : 1140x570 Presented by RM Sotheby's. RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 1971 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone ANATOMY OF A RAGING BULL The Spanish bull referred to as the Miura may have first entered the pop culture lexicon with the publication of Ernest Hemingway’s enduring 1926 classic The Sun Also Rises. Hemingway’s disaffected expatriates travel to Spain to watch the bullfights, and there they are impressed by the brutal capabilities of the Miura, a creature that is muscular, powerful, lithe, and menacing. Forty years later, Ferruccio Lamborghini introduced his automotive interpretation of the Miura, and in every way the new model lived up to the values of its namesake. Replete with all the grace and power of Pamplona’s bulls, the Miura P400 was a revolutionary sports car in every sense, from its transversely positioned mid/rear-mounted V-12 engine, to the sinewy and voluptuous coachwork designed by Bertone’s Marcello Gandini. After progressing through the P400 S iteration unveiled at the Geneva Salon in March 1970, the Miura underwent one final development introduced in Geneva a year later. The resulting Miura P400 SV was available by special order only, and the SV (or Spinto Veloce) nomenclature instantly clarified that this was the most mechanically advanced Miura to emerge from Sant’ Agata Bolognese. To accommodate fiercer performance, the chassis was reinforced and the rear suspension was improved with larger wishbones. In combination with the fitting of larger wheels, this resulted in a wider rear track that necessitated sculpting wider rear fenders, adding further muscular character to Gandini’s original design. The proprietary Lamborghini V-12 was further tuned to develop 385 horsepower, a dividend of an additional 15 horsepower over the concurrent P400 S. Among a combined output of approximately 900 total examples built, the P400 SV was built in a relatively modest quantity of 150 examples, making it the rarest of the three Miura variants. To this day the model remains prized by discerning collectors for its uprated performance and elevated cosmetics, signifiers of the most highly developed and advanced version of Lamborghini’s legendary bull. CHASSIS NUMBER 4926 Desirably equipped and benefitting from a comprehensive restoration by one of the marque’s most respected specialists and retaining its numbers-matching components, this beautifully presented Miura is one of the finest examples of the P400 SV to be offered in recent memory. According to Simon Kidston’s authoritative Miura registry, chassis number 4926 completed factory assembly in November 1971, finished in Giallo Sole paint and upholstered with Nero leather. The car was desirably equipped with the split-sump lubrication system common to later examples, and there is a strong chance that the currently fitted air-conditioning system was originally installed by the factory. While there is currently no corroborative documentary evidence, it is believed that this Lamborghini was originally distributed to the Rome-based dealer Carpanelli for sale to an Italian client named Cervini residing in Louisiana. After passing through collections in Idaho and Florida, the Miura was eventually sold in 1990 to Bill Young of Arizona, the owner of one of the most respected suppliers of parts for vintage Italian performance cars. The P400 SV was acquired in 2001 by the well-known dealer/film producer Randy Simon, and he soon commissioned a full refurbishment by the Bobileff Motorcar Company in San Diego, one of the foremost restorers of classic Lamborghinis. The four-year restoration reportedly addressed every mechanical and cosmetic aspect of the car, including a complete rebuild of the V-12 engine by Bob Wallace, the former racing driver and Lamborghini factory test driver/engineer. The exquisite coachwork was repainted in the lovely shade of Blu Notte (midnight blue), while the interior was retrimmed in light gray leather with complementary dark blue carpeting, combining to create a very handsome color scheme. Following completion of the work, the Miura was presented at several concours, winning its class at the 2005 Concorso Italiano and at the 2007 Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance, where it was also awarded Best in Show and Most Elegant. The SV was also exhibited at the 2007 La Bella Macchina d’Italia and won another class award at the Lamborghini Club of America’s National Meet in Monterey, California. Sold to the current owner in January 2011, the Lamborghini was treated to a host of measures through 2013 as indicated by invoices on file, including a rebuild of the transmission, carburetors, and master cylinder. The engine and carburetors were tuned, the wiring system was repaired, a Tubi Style exhaust was installed, and the air conditioning was charged. Since then, the Miura has largely remained in climate-controlled storage, although in preparation for the current offering the car underwent a fluid service in November 2022 to ensure basic operating condition. As the beneficiary of a full restoration by one of America’s leading Lamborghini specialists, the quality of which has been confirmed by the car’s impressive show record, this striking P400 SV would make a fabulous acquisition for any marque enthusiast or collector of iconic sports cars. It is also worth noting that the car bears mechanical stampings that indicate it retains its numbers-matching chassis, engine, and body. Beautifully finished and powerfully specified, this rare example of the last batch of a special breed exemplifies all the remarkable traits for which the Miura is so celebrated, perpetuating the model’s mythos in a fashion that even the noted sportsman Hemingway could hardly match. This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, kicking off the 2023 collector car auction calendar 26 January. View more and register to bid online at rmsothebys.com today. 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II by Pininfarina1324064

By Edward Jones –  January 19, 2023

RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series I...

Image with size : 1140x570 Presented by RM Sotheby's. RM Sotheby’s Arizona: 1966 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II by Pininfarina REDEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE “SUPER”Initially coined for a series of show cars and concepts, Ferrari’s “Superfast” nomenclature was first applied to a production vehicle with the introduction of the 500 Superfast in 1964. Designed from the start to be a luxurious, exclusive grand tourer that would more than live up to its evocative name, the new model was in many ways the ultimate development of Ferrari’s flagship Superamerica model, wearing an evolution of the sleek Aerodinamico coupe coachwork that had graced the 400 SA.While the Superfast paid obvious homage to its direct predecessor on the outside, its running gear was less obviously rooted in the Superamerica. Primarily, the Tipo 578/65 chassis was a reflection of the concurrent 330 GT 2+2 chassis, sharing that car’s long-wheelbase dimensions. A forerunner of the immense “personal luxury cars” that later came into fashion, the Superfast made the most of this wheelbase by eschewing the rear seats, endowing the driver and passenger with a roomy cabin that exuded elegance. Luxury amenities included a sumptuous leather interior and teak-accented dashboard. The Superfast’s 4,963-cubic-centimeter Tipo 208 V-12 was an extremely unique engine for Ferrari, combining elements of the Lampredi-designed tall-block racing engine and the long-running Colombo-designed short-block employed in a majority of the grand touring models and berlinettas. The new engine carried the cylinder dimensions of the Lampredi-based Superamerica engine, but its architecture was derived from the Colombo motors. Capable of developing 400 horsepower, this engine was described by the noted marque historian Hans Tanner as “one of the most powerful Ferrari GT engines ever constructed.”Unveiled at the 1964 Geneva International Motor Show on chassis number 5951 SF, the 500 Superfast was made in an exclusive quantity of 24 first-series examples before cosmetic and mechanical alterations were made on a second series of 12 cars, bringing total production to 36 examples through late 1966. As the latest in Ferrari’s renowned line of exclusive flagship grand tourers, the 500 Superfast enjoyed the preferred ownership of jet-set luminaries such as the Aga Khan, Barbara Hutton, the Shah of Iran, and Peter Sellers.Claiming rarity, breathtaking aesthetics, and unprecedented road-car performance thanks to its prodigious 400-horsepower 4.9-liter engine, the 500 Superfast was the ultimate expression of the company’s flagship Superamerica series. The highly collectible cars are now found at the center of some of the world’s most exclusive and respected collections.A PININFARINA-CLOTHED JEWELClaiming significant in-period ownership provenance that has more recently given way to a stellar concours exhibition record, this striking 500 Superfast is a typically ravishing example of Ferrari’s mid-1960s flagship touring machine. According to the research of marque authority Marcel Massini, chassis number 8565 SF is the 34th of 36 total examples built, though numerically it is the ninth of 12 second-series examples, and the fourth-from-last car built. Entering Pininfarina’s Turin plant in November 1965, the car was appointed with air conditioning, power windows, and power steering, and it was finished in Bleu Sera paint over an interior upholstered in Grigio Vaumol leather from Connolly. After completing assembly in April 1966, the Ferrari was sold new to John Von Neumann, the legendary racing impresario and importer, instrumental in popularizing European sports cars in the western United States. A peer of contemporary influential importers like Max Hoffman and Luigi Chinetti, Von Neumann was a founding member of the California Sports Car Club and may be best known for catapulting the 250 GT California Spider to such success, in addition to campaigning a well-known Testa Rossa (among many other notable cars). In April 1973, the Superfast was purchased by “Chargin’” Charlie Hayes, an upstart American racing driver who flirted with success during the 1970s, often championing American horsepower before eventually joining William McKelvy’s Scuderia Bear. Hayes soon advertised the 500 in Road & Track magazine, and by the end of the decade the car was sold to the Hollywood-based dealer Sal di Natale. During the decade the engine was replaced with another correct Superfast motor, number 8083 (although the original mill would be reunited with the car two decades later). In 1979, the Ferrari was acquired by Charles Borin of Calabasas, California, and he repainted the car red and reupholstered the interior in tan leather. Borin retained possession for 12 years before the car passed to the esteemed dealer Ed Waterman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1993, the Ferrari’s original engine, number 8565 SF, was reinstalled in this Superfast, contributing to the car’s optimal authenticity. A full restoration was conducted at this time, including a repaint of the coachwork in dark blue and trimming of the interior with cognac leather.Sold in 2002 to Charles Morse of Seattle, Washington, the Superfast was displayed at the 2003 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, winning the Ferrari class. Ten months later the car was spotted in attendance at the Palm Beach Cavallino Classic. In January 2004, Morse sold the Ferrari to the late Dr. Ervin “Bud” Lyon of Kensington, New Hampshire, long recognized as one of New England’s most significant collectors. Mr. Lyon presented the car at the 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it scored 95 out of a possible 100 points during judging, and in January 2006 the car was exhibited at the Cavallino Classic.Later in 2006, chassis number 8565 SF was treated to a comprehensive refurbishment by the highly respected Paul Russell and Company in Essex, Massachusetts and, on the back of this work, the Superfast was presented at Amelia Island in March 2007, winning the prestigious Amelia Award. In September 2008, Mr. Lyon sold the Ferrari to a collector based in Oregon, who displayed the car at the 2009 Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance in Beverly Hills before engaging Francorchamps of America and Ferrari of Beverly Hills to conduct additional mechanical work. When offered at RM Sotheby's flagship Monterey sale in August 2010, the Ferrari had reportedly accrued no more than 400 miles. Acquired by the consignor later that year, the Superfast has been driven very little since, spending most of the last 12 years in climate-controlled storage. In preparation for the current offering, the car has recently undergone a light freshening to accommodate basic operational condition. It should be noted that the paintwork has considerably aged since the 2006 restoration and in some areas displays lifting and crazing. It is also important to note that the car retains mechanical stampings that indicate the continued presence of the matching-numbers chassis and the rare type 208 engine.Still beguiling in its dark blue over cognac interior, this handsome 500 Superfast continues to display the benefits of the expert restoration by Paul Russell, offering further exhibition on finer concours fields. Notable for its initial ownership by the luminary John Von Neumann, and offering the rarity defined as being one of 36 examples built and one of just 12 second-series cars, this luxurious grand tourer would make a sensational addition to any collection, particularly suited to enthusiasts of Maranello’s peerless luxury flagship tradition. This vehicle will be offered at RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale, kicking off the 2023 collector car auction calendar 26 January. The color, while shocking serves as the perfect contrast to the black accents, black wheels, and exposed carbon fiber throughout. Much of the exposed carbon is thanks to the fact that this car comes equipped with Porsche’s available Weissach package, taking the car to further heights with an exposed carbon hood and more aggressive, track-focused appointments throughout. Open the doors and you’ll be greeted to an interior that matches the exterior in its black and green color and sporty character. However, the real magic starts when the engine comes to life, as not only does this car promise unforgettably excellent track performance, but this specific one for sale has been customized with a cat back exhaust, enhancing the amazing and unique flat-6 engine note.
