McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. RM Sotheby’s Munich: 1991 Ferrari F40

Presented by RM Sotheby's. Barely requiring an introduction, the Ferrari F40 set new benchmarks in design, engineering, and performance while commemorating Maranello’s 40th anniversary. Developed from the revered 288 GTO, the model was built upon a steel tube-frame chassis with four-wheel double-wishbone independent suspension, coil-over Koni shock absorbers, and four-caliper ventilated disc brakes. It was clothed in wedge-styled, wind-tunnel-proven coachwork woven from Kevlar and carbon fiber to a design by Pininfarina. Weight-saving features such as cloth upholstery on plastic-composite racing seats, pull-strap door releases, drilled pedals, and Perspex windows maximized the potential of a new 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 equipped with IHI turbochargers and Behr intercoolers. European-spec cars developed 478 PS and 577 Nm of torque, the potent Tipo F120A engine was capable of launching the F40 to 100 km/h from standstill in just 4.1 seconds and achieving a top speed of 324 km/h. Initially earmarked for a relatively low production run of 400 cars, the popular F40 was ultimately built in a quantity of 1,315 examples, and the model today remains one of Maranello’s most iconic creations, appealing to supercar enthusiasts and Ferrari purists alike. This beautifully presented F40 benefits from a life of modest driving use and consistent upkeep that included at least one extended period of careful storage. According to a history report by marque expert Marcel Massini, chassis number 89385 completed assembly in May 1991, specified for the European market with instruments in kilometers, equipped with wind-up windows, and characteristically finished in Rosso Ferrari paint over an interior of Stoffa Vigogna upholstery. As confirmed by a copy of a warranty card on file, the Ferrari was immediately delivered to its first owner of record, Roberto “Pupo” Moreno, a Brazilian racing driver who found marginal success during a three-decade career that included stints in Formula One, CART, and sports car racing. After only 18 months of ownership, Pupo had the F40 stored at the Maranello factory and offered it for sale. The berlinetta was then acquired by an enthusiast in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and before long the car was stored for a further period at a local garage. In July 2007 the Ferrari resurfaced when it was driven by Matthias Weiland at the Ferrari Racing Days event held at the Hockenheimring and in March 2011, Mr. Weiland displayed the car at the Techno Classica in Essen. A few months later, the F40 was sold to a French enthusiast residing in Brive-La Gaillarde, and it was one of 500 Ferraris invited for display at the Sport et Collection exhibition at the Circuit Le Vigeant in June 2013. After passing to an Italian enthusiast around 2015, the berlinetta was more recently acquired by the consigning owner. In September 2020, the seller took the F40 for servicing at Modena Cars SA in Geneva, Switzerland, and the work was completed by the following February. Both left and right fuel tanks were replaced, the fuel lines were refreshed, and other work was undertaken to ensure the supercar’s smooth running; the work totaled CHF 116,500, and the invoice can be viewed in this car’s history file. The odometer of the Ferrari displays 9,400 kilometers at the time of cataloging. Important stampings confirm that this F40 retains its matching-numbers body, chassis, engine, and gearbox. The F40 is documented with a report by marque expert Marcel Massini included in its history file, further to copies of the warranty booklet and service invoices from 2012 to 2020. RM Sotheby’s Munich: 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Presented by RM Sotheby's. Porsche’s 991-series adaptation of the 911 GT3 RS made its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2015, sporting an enlarged 4.0-liter flat-six engine. A facelift followed in February 2018, bringing with it an uprated engine that bumped total power output from 500 to 520 PS, with the rev limit lifted to 9,000 rpm. Externally, the car was styled more aggressively, with NACA ducts to aid brake cooling, and new side skirts and a colossal rear wing influenced by the GT2 RS. Just a few months after its arrival, the 991.2 GT3 RS became only the third production Porsche to break the seven-minute barrier at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, following in the footsteps of the ground-breaking 918 Spyder. Flat out, the GT3 RS could hit 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. Offered an inviting stretch of the unrestricted autobahn and the benchmark 911 would reach a breath-taking terminal velocity of 310 km/h. This one-owner example was delivered to the consignor, an Italian collector of benchmark modern supercars, in 2018, and was registered for the road on 17 July that year. It was specified in Black over a Black leather and Alcantara interior with yellow stitching and complementary satin-black forged alloy wheels. Service stamps were issued by Porsche Ebimotors S.r.l. on 2 July 2020 and 6 June 2022, with odometer readings noted as 1,237 and 4,935 kilometers, respectively. At time of cataloging, the odometer read just 5,053 kilometers. This low-mileage GT3 RS represents one of the most accomplished iterations of Porsche’s celebrated 911, and presents beautifully in its menacing triple-black color scheme. RM Sotheby’s Munich: 2005 Porsche Carrera GT

Presented by RM Sotheby's. Launched at the Geneva Salon in 2003, the Porsche Carrera GT was arguably the most extreme road-legal model in the Stuttgart firm’s history. Unsurprisingly, the German hypercar was received with unrivaled enthusiasm and a rush of orders. Powered by a quad-cam 5,733 cc V-10, the Typ 980 owed its existence to Porsche’s long-standing involvement in motorsport. The engine could trace its origins to a project initially intended for use in Formula 1 but—after Porsche withdrew its plans to enter the sport—it was later resurrected for an entry at Le Mans in 2000. A lack of engineering resources—twinned with the need to press ahead with the Cayenne SUV—meant that the plan was dropped, although it did lead to the 5.5-litre V-10 prototype engine being unveiled in Paris in September 2000. While the Cayenne diverted attention away from the project, it was the success of that SUV that enabled Stuttgart to finally develop the production Carrera GT. And for anyone fearing that the launch of a large off-roader meant Zuffenhausen had abandoned its sports-car roots, the Typ 980 was proof that the firm remained as focused as ever. According to Porsche, the only modifications to convert the race engine for road use were centered on emissions and noise regulations. Developing 612 PS and 590 Nm of torque, the dry-sump V-10 was mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, and delivered electrifying performance. The new supercar could storm from 0-200 km/h in 9.9 seconds, while top speed was 330 km/h. Ventilated carbon-ceramic discs, state-of-the-art inboard suspension, plus 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels were standard, as were traction control and anti-lock brakes. The Carrera GT was very much an analog machine, but that is not to say it was old-fashioned. The stunning body was Porsche’s first carbon fiber monocoque, with construction subcontracted to aerospace specialist ATR Composites. Clever aerodynamics included a rear wing that deployed automatically (a Zuffenhausen trademark since the 964). A carbon undertray with ducts leading to a rear diffuser also ensured that the car remained glued to the road, while the scalloped flanks directed air to the three radiators. As a Porsche, practicality and comfort were also key, so the cockpit was trimmed in supple leather, while Targa roof panels combined the advantages of fixed-head motoring with the sensory delights of an open car. Delivered to Porsche Leipzig in Germany in October 2005, chassis 000079 was specified in GT Silver Metallic over an Ascot hide interior with a matching luggage set. It was bought by the consignor, who became its third owner, in December 2018. The car benefitted from four new tires, a battery, paintwork rectification, replacement ignition coils and spark plugs, a starter motor, and a service at Porsche Stuttgart in late 2021, during which the clutch was also inspected. In April of the following year the radiators were replaced, with the total cost for all the work amounting to more than €27,000. Additionally, a larger driver’s seat was fitted at a cost of more than €16,000. The odometer displayed 35,611 kilometers at the time of cataloging, and the car is accompanied by handbooks and a partial luggage set.As the only production model equipped with the astonishing quad-cam V-10, and with a limited production run of just 1,270, this incredible hypercar is one of the most collectible Porsches of all time. RM Sotheby’s Munich: 1958 BMW 507 Roadster Series II

Presented by RM Sotheby's. For all its industrial might, the United States’ automotive sector arguably failed to produce anything, particularly sporting until the arrival of the Chevrolet Corvette. It was a gap in the market that was filled for decades by affordable sports cars from the likes of Austin-Healey, MG and Triumph. US importer Max Hoffman was one of the first to recognize an appetite for higher value, higher performance cars. After introducing American buyers to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and Porsche 356, he convinced BMW to tempt customers with its own prestige offering: the 507 Roadster. Entering production in 1956 and aimed squarely at US buyers, the 507 was a glittering jewel of a car styled by New York-based designer Albrecht von Goertz. The strict two-seater was both elegant and sporting, with a shark-like body created from lightweight aluminum and dripping with luxurious chrome embellishments. It was a machine that emanated both class and exclusivity, built for silver screen starlets and cruising down Sunset Boulevard on hot Hollywood nights. Beneath that sensuous coachwork lay a shortened version of BMW’s 501-series chassis, equipped with double wishbone and torsion bar front suspension, a Panhard rod-located live rear axle, and Alfin drum brakes at each corner. The package was completed by a glorious V-8 soundtrack courtesy of an improved version of the 3.2-liter engine found in the 503. Thanks to a higher lift camshaft, revised ignition timing, and a higher compression ratio, the newly minted M507/1 could deliver 152 PS, which was channeled to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. These revisions—coupled with a relatively low kerb weight—meant the 507 could reach 97 km/h in around 11 seconds, on its way to a respectable top speed of 201 km/h. By the summer of 1957, the 507 had undergone changes to improve both cabin and boot space, resulting in the first 34 cars being retrospectively titled as Series Is. The redesigned Series II featured more room for driver, passenger, and luggage, while also refining the dashboard and stowing of the fabric roof. Already an order of magnitude more expensive than Hoffman had initially intended, the redesign pushed the asking price to $10,500—more than three times that of a Porsche 356 Speedster. Due in no small part to the colossal price tag, just 252 BMW 507 Roadsters were built during three years of production, ensuring the model remained one of the most desirable and exclusive machines ever built. Chassis 70143, a Series II Roadster, was completed on 12 June 1958 before being delivered to Casa dell’ Automobili in Rome on 19 August. Originally finished in Dolomite Grey, little is known of the 507’s early life until its reappearance in March 1973, when it was offered at auction in Geneva. It is believed to have passed into the care of a prominent Swiss BMW dealer, who is understood to have had it restored before finally selling the car in 2013. Photographs of the car mid-restoration feature in Michael Kliebenstein’s SuperFinds, published in 2020, while correspondence with BMW confirms that both chassis and engine numbers match factory records. In recent years, the BMW has formed part of an automotive museum exhibition. As a result of its time spent on static display, this car will require mechanical inspection prior to returning to road use. Today, chassis 70143 is smartly finished in cream paintwork with matching wheels over a red leather interior, and presents a rare opportunity to step into one of the most celebrated BMWs of the 20th Century. RM Sotheby’s Munich: 2017 Ferrari F12tdf

Presented by RM Sotheby's. Launched in 2015, the F12tdf was the most extreme version of the F12berlinetta, which had arrived three years earlier as a replacement for the outgoing 599 GTB. The F12 carried the flame for the muscular, front-engined, V-12 powered gran turismos that had built the Ferrari legend since the 1960s, and the Tour de France was its most powerful expression. Designed as a track-focussed variant, the F12tdf featured many improvements over the already technologically advanced F12berlinetta. The 6.3-liter V-12 was retuned to produce 780 PS, making it more powerful than any Ferrari that had come before—with the exception of the LaFerrari. To rein in that power, carbon ceramic discs and one-piece callipers were borrowed from the firm’s mid-engined flagship. Extensive use of carbon fibre reduced the kerb weight by 110 kilograms, while the gearbox featured shorter gear ratios and quicker changes. The F12tdf was also the first ever Ferrari to feature four-wheel steering. The result of these modifications is a machine that is visually more aggressive than the standard F12berlinetta, with wider side sills and an “Aerobridge” that directs airflow along the sides of the car. Thanks largely to the longer, taller rear wing and active rear diffuser, the Tour de France boasts an 87 percent increase in downforce compared with the standard F12. It’s also one of the most ballistically quick cars Maranello has ever produced, with 0-100 km/h achieved in just 2.9 seconds and an eye-opening top speed of 340 km/h. With just 799 examples built between 2015 and 2017, any F12tdf is a rare machine. Chassis 226351 is more special still, having been ordered in the Extra Campionario color of exposed carbon Blu Scozia over a Grigio Alcantara interior; it is also one of only five examples of the F12tdf made in Blu Scozia. This striking and deeply appealing combination was further augmented by body-colored door mirrors, blue brake callipers, and liberal application of exposed carbon fibre. The interior was specified with “Daytona” racing seats—sized large—with matching grey carpets, seatbelts, and Alcantara steering wheel; even the boot is trimmed in luxurious Alcantara. Furthermore, the Ferrari was ordered with adaptive headlamps, Bluetooth-enabled infotainment system, insulated windscreen, and parking cameras. Owned by the consignor since taking delivery from the Milanese dealer Rossocorsa on 11 May 2017, this F12tdf has been serviced every year since 2018. The most recent service was carried out on 9 June 2022 at 2,867 kilometers, and at time of cataloging the odometer reads just 2,945 kilometers. The Ferrari F12tdf is one of the greatest gran turismos of the modern era, and a worthy successor to the game-changing Prancing Horse-badged V-12s that came before. The example offered is one of the best, with low-mileage, single ownership, and a dream specification in one of Maranello’s rarest finishes of exposed carbon Blu Scozia, a request reserved for Ferrari’s most cherished customers.
