McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Sleeper Class: Only 100 Examples of This Forgotten V12 Me...

Not too long ago, we took a deep dive into one of the wildest SLs Mercedes ever built, the R231 Facelift-based SL65 AMG Black Series. With its twin-turbo V12, wide arches, and track-focused DNA, it represented the far end of what an SL could be: violent, unapologetic, and over the top. At the other end of the spectrum, while the R129-generation SL600 may not be as pronounced, it is still relatively modern, timeless, understated, potent, and exactly the sort of car that tells those in the know you have arrived without needing to announce it. The R129 has been gaining attention precisely for that very reason, because it serves as an ideal blend of presence, subtlety, and performance in an extremely elegant package. Launched in 1989 and produced through 2002, it sat at the top of Mercedes’ lineup for more than a decade, and during that time, the SL wore the best technology Stuttgart could muster: adaptive suspension, integrated deployable roll-over bar protection, and engines that ranged from six-cylinder workhorses to V12 powerhouses, including the SL73 AMG, who’s engine would eventually find its way into the mighty Pagani Zonda. The limited-run Silver Arrow editions, built only in the final year, were swan-song specials. For the SL600, Mercedes capped production at 100 units worldwide. That number alone makes it an insider’s collectible and the sort of rarity that will most likely not show up at your local Cars and Coffee. Now it is also worth noting where the R129 sits in the broader SL lineage. The SL or Sport Leicht nameplate has run across seven distinct generations, from the original 1950s 300SL Gullwing and Roadster to the modern R232 launched in 2021. The R129 was penned under Bruno Sacco, Mercedes’ legendary design chief who shaped the brand’s look through the 1980s and 1990s. His philosophy of “horizontal homogeneity, vertical affinity” gave Mercedes models a family resemblance that still looks cohesive decades later, and the R129 is by far one of the cleanest examples of his restrained, purposeful approach. This particular highly original 2002 SL600 Silver Arrow takes it a step further. With fewer than 50,000 miles on the clock and with the highly desirable panoramic roof, which by the way, on the open market can fetch around $9,000 on its own, this SL makes a strong case for itself. Throw in the staggered 18-inch BBS two-piece wheels, also original, and you begin to see why this example stands out. Besides the design, the highlight here is the naturally aspirated 6.0-liter 48-valve M120 V12 unit that puts out just 390 horsepower, but a healthy 420 pound-feet of torque, and power goes to the rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission. It's not about quarter-mile times or 0-60 times with this one, but it still complies with the German Gentleman's agreement and does the 155 mph, which is plenty fast already, and without the limiter, you could easily be looking at 180 mph. Also, celebrity ownership boosted the car’s image during its production run. Princess Diana famously owned an SL500, which was the first non-British car she was publicly known to drive as a royal. Other high-profile names included Cindy Crawford and Michael Schumacher, both photographed with R129s during the 1990s. That says a lot about how the market views these cars as a sweet spot of modern reliability, timeless Sacco-era styling, and genuine Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship. Think of it as a baller Mercedes for someone who does not need the flash. Park it next to a modern-day exotic, and the crowd might flock to the the latter, but someone who knows their Mercs, and what a Silver Arrow badge really represents (a callback to the silver arrow racing legends of the 1930s), will likely gravitate to the SL600. Unlike more modern AMG machines that scream for attention, this car conveys status. Values of R129s, particularly the special editions, have been creeping upward as collectors start to realize how few pristine examples remain. With estimates that only 87 SL600 Silver Arrows are still in existence, finding one that is serviced, unmodified, and well-documented like the one we have here is a rare opportunity to acquire something truly unique within the SL legacy. This is the Lamborghini Pregunta (that translates to 'ask' or 'question' in Spanish), a name that only the most devoted Lambo faithful might recognize. It began life during the Chrylser-era and was subsequently built in 1998 by French coachbuilder Carrosserie Heuliez-Torino; it was never meant for mass production. Instead, it was a design exercise —a one-off that carried the spirit of a fighter jet on the chassis of the already stunning Diablo. Now, more than two decades later, that lone prototype is heading to auction with Broad Arrow Zoute Concours Auction on October 10 in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, with an estimate of €2.5 to €3.5 million ($2.7 to $3.7 million). " width="680"> The highlight of this concept is, without a doubt, its radical design language. The project was overseen by Heuliez design director Marc Deschamps, formerly of Bertone, whose career included icons like the Renault 5 Turbo and Lamborghini Jalpa. The Pregunta concept drew inspiration from the Dassault Rafale fighter jet; it features a matte dark gray paint, canopy-style cockpit, the signature Lamborghini scissor doors, digital side mirrors, and removable polycarbonate roof panels. Now, despite being based on the Diablo, which served as the basis for several design studies over its decade-long run, the overall form of the Pregunta was a departure from the angular wedge shape defined by Marcello Gandini, a legacy that can be traced back to the Countach. Having said that, the Pregunta does predate another fighter-jet-inspired Lambo, the Murcielago-based Reventon, but that car would make it to series production in both coupe and roadster forms, albeit as a limited-run model. Coming to the interior, the aviation theme continued with Azure Blue Alcantara upholstery, fiber-optic lighting, an Alpine stereo, and a Magneti Marelli digital instrument cluster. The Pregunta debuted at the 1998 Paris Motor Show and appeared again in Geneva in 1999. Unlike the other Diablo-based Lamborghini concepts like the Zagato Raptor or Canto prototypes, no further examples were built; this car remains the only Pregunta in existence. The was subsequently also displayed at Rétromobile 2007, and remained with the French coachbuilder before passing to a private collector. Lamborghini’s Heritage department performed maintenance and issued Polo Storico certification in 2021 before displaying it in the company’s museum. The Pregunta represents a turning point in Lamborghini’s story, serving as a bridge between two glorious eras of the raging bull. The Porsche faithful among you should be well aware that, unlike the 356, the 911 G-series, or the later 997 and 991 generations, the 993 never officially wore the Speedster badge. A handful of one-offs did exist, most famously Luca Trazzi’s yellow 993 Speedster, commissioned through Porsche’s Special Wishes or Sonderwunsch program and shown at The Quail last year. But Gunther Werks decided that was a mistake worth correcting, and it resulted in one of the most dramatic air-cooled 911s ever built. This isn’t a simple roof-delete, it’s a ground-up reimagination of the final air-cooled generation, executed with obsessive detail. The car you see here, finished in Amethyst Metallic, is a '97 Carrera, and listed for sale at Graham Rahal Performance, has only 1,041 miles on the clock. Gunther Werks was founded in Huntington Beach, California, by Peter Nam, the same mind behind Vorsteiner wheels. From the onset, his mission was simple: reimagine the last air-cooled 911s with modern precision and obsessive craftsmanship. The California connection is also equally important because, just like the OG 356 Speedster of the 1950s, these restomods were built for places with sun, coastal highways, and a culture that embraces reinterpreted classics. The GW Speedster features modern LED lighting, extensive carbon fiber panels, including a single-skin hood, a reworked dash, and lightweight bucket seats with plum leather highlights and classic Porsche five-pod instrumentation. The distinctive speedster-inspired double-bubble rear deck is carbon as well. Despite extra bracing behind the seats, the car weighs about 2,590 pounds, which is roughly 30 pounds lighter than Gunther Werks’ 400R coupe, while achieving 50 percent greater torsional rigidity than a 993 coupe and more than twice that of a stock cabriolet. For an open-top 911, that’s remarkable. As for performance, under the ductail decklid, sits Rothsport Racing’s naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six that delivers 435 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. For some context, that is over 100 more than the stock 993 Carrera, but more importantly, that high-revving flat-six pairs with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive, turning the Speedster into something Porsche should have considered making themselves. While Gunther Werks doesn’t publish official figures, independent tests peg 0-60 mph in the low four-second range and top speed around 190 mph. Handling is another highlight, as JRZ's adjustable remote-reservoir suspension will allow you to dial the ride from firm and precise to soft and playful. Massive 295-section fronts and 335-section rears on steel smoked gray Fuchs-style lightweight alloy wheels should keep this exotic glued to the tarmac. In the end, like the original 356 Speedster and Porsche’s 991 GT Speedster, it was built to emphasize athleticism as much as aesthetics. With only 25 in existence and this example barely driven, the question remains: would you use it as intended for spirited canyon runs, or stash it away in an air-conditioned garage, because after all, this is one of the rarest 993s ever built. Whatever you decide, the opportunity to acquire one has now presented itself, and it will cost you a pretty penny. Even when new, the Gunther Werks Speedster costs about $585,000 before options. RM Sotheby’s to Sell 42 Exotic Cars From a Single Collect...

If you think the market for ultra-rare supercars has plateaued, think again. RM Sotheby’s has just announced the Tailored for Speed Collection, a single-owner lineup of 42 cars heading to auction on October 11, 2025, at Zurich’s Dolder Grand Hotel. What you’re looking at here is a curated selection of hypercars, race legends, and bespoke builds that even seasoned collectors rarely see gathered in one place. Let’s start with the headliners. This is the first time that some of the most noteworthy models from Ferrari’s Corse Clienti XX Program, including an FXX Evoluzione, 599XX Evoluzione, and FXX K Evo will cross the block together from a single private collection. Race-bred at Fiorano and built for factory-backed track use and usually confined to Maranello’s inner circle, they represent as close as a civilian can get to Ferrari’s Formula One tech. Then there’s the 1998 Ferrari 333 SP, a car that has won at Barcelona and Monza during the 1999 Sports Racing World Cup. With an estimate of CHF 4.5-5 million ($5.1-$5.7 million), its race-winning provenance by itself sets it apart from static examples. Very few 333 SPs with this kind of history have traded hands, making it one of the crown jewels of this sale. The road cars on offer are equally outrageous. A Tailor-Made Ferrari Daytona SP3 and Monza SP1, which are both part of Ferrari’s Icona Series, headline the Ferrari lineup. A LaFerrari Coupe finished in Grigio contrasts sharply against the collection’s reds and blues, while the LaFerrari Aperta remains one of the most desirable modern Ferraris regardless of paint. Three separate cars, the 812 Competizione A, a 599 SA Aperta, and a 599 GTO, all finished in Blue Pozzi, show how deliberate this collector was in curating a cohesive theme. Even the F12berlinetta 70th Anniversary carries a one-off livery from Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary program, showcasing how special these specifications really are. Add in a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport finished in exposed blue carbon, an Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro, a Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, a Pagani Huayra Roadster BC, and the brand-new Pagani Utopia, and you’re staring at a greatest-hits collection of 21st-century hypercars. Alongside all the Ferraris and Paganis are more competition machines like the Ferrari 488 GTE Evo and Mercedes-AMG GT Track Series. It is worth noting that more than a dozen cars are being offered without reserve. It includes cars like the Ferrari 812 Competizione, the 458 Speciale Aperta, and the 488 GT3 Evo. Normally, sellers guard these cars with heavy reserves, but here, the door is open to opportunistic buyers if demand doesn’t push the numbers beyond estimates. Of course, the mystery around ownership of this collection also adds intrigue to the sale. RM Sotheby’s has kept the collector’s identity under wraps, though speculation points to figures connected with Swiss motorsport and Ferrari’s Special Projects program. That also explains details like the collection’s one-off SP38, the Daytona SP3 and Monza, all painted in Rosso Deborah, a one-off shade linked to noted Ferrari client and collector Deborah Mayer. The lineup carries a collective low estimate of CHF 53 million ($66 million), cementing its status as one of Europe’s most significant single-owner supercar collections, that is now headed to auction. It was just last week, we witnessed the sale of the epic Mansour Ojjeh collection of 20 exquisite one-off McLarens, highlighting how deep the appetite runs for curated single-owner sales. But more importantly, it also reflects a larger trend, where modern supercars are now commanding serious premiums on the block, something that was also evident during our extensive coverage of last month’s Monterey Car Week auctions, where low-mileage modern exotics achieved prices well above expectations, and the top sale went to another one-off Daytona SP3 selling for a staggering $26 million, also sold by RM Sotheby's. Clearly then, the appetite for modern-era blue-chip exotics isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. So, where does the Tailored for Speed Collection go? With XX cars, genuine race winners, and modern hypercars all under one roof, this upcoming auction represents a buying opportunity to acquire some of the most tastefully spec’d automobiles. Less Than 10 In The U.S.: Lamborghini Centenario Roadster...

If you’ve been waiting for a Centenario Roadster (pronounced Chentanario in Italian) to hit the market, Holman Motorcars of St. Louis, Missouri, has just listed one of the rarest modern Lamborghinis ever made. Lamborghini built 20 Coupes and 20 Roadsters of the Centenario, and this 2017 Roadster, chassis# ZHWUZ5ZD3HLA06826, is one of those 20 Roadster examples. However, fewer than 10 are believed to have landed Stateside. Finished in a striking shade of bespoke Blu Cepheus and Blu Hera duo-tone over Nero Cosmus Alcantara, it has 7,491 miles on the odometer and comes fully serviced, paint-protected, and ready for a new garage. Note that this is the sole Centanario finished in this color combination. For some context, the Centenario Roadster made its debut at Pebble Beach nearly a decade ago, back in 2016, celebrating the 100th birthday of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini. It served as a preview of what would come after the Aventador, much like the Reventón foreshadowed it. The very first U.S. delivery followed in 2017. Underneath its wild, carbon-fiber bodywork sits a heavily revised version of the Aventador’s naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12, tuned to 770 horsepower. That’s enough for 0 to 60 in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. The rear-wheel steering system, a first for Lamborghini, improves agility around town while offering more stability at speed. The Centanario also introduced Lamborghini’s latest infotainment system, which features a 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen capable of recording telemetry and lap data. Aerodynamics defined this Italian exotic’s identity. The bodywork is unique to the Centenario and features innovations Lamborghini carried forward into what we see in their current lineup. Even the lighting units are branded “Lamborghini Light Design” as a point of pride. A massive twin-deck front splitter and the largest rear diffuser ever fitted to a Lamborghini work with an electronically adjustable rear wing to generate over 500 pounds of downforce at 174 mph. The aggressive body is actually less about pure styling and more about giving the driver confidence when pushing the car’s limits. Besides the stunning paintwork, this particular example is also optioned with the interior carbon fiber package, transparent engine cover, Apple CarPlay, and silver-finished tailpipes. The forged wheels measure 20 inches up front and 21 at the rear, and come wrapped in ultra-low-profile Pirellis. 400 mm front and 380 mm rear carbon-ceramic brakes work together to bring this 3,500-pound roadster to a stop. Priced at $2,292,699, the higher miles may be a drawback for some, but with a production run of only 20 and only 10 in the United States, you might not get another chance to buy one, as such limited-run models like the Lamborghini Centenario rarely come up for sale.
