Before the Venom F5, before 300-mph ambitions and before Hennessey Special Vehicles became the name connected to some of America’s wildest hypercars, there was one car that started it all. That car was the Hennessey Venom GT, and after years away from the company, one of the most important examples has officially made its way back home.
John Hennessey recently shared the story of the car’s return on Instagram and YouTube, walking around the Venom GT at The Hennessey Ranch in Carmel Valley and revisiting the early days of the project. The car was originally built during the first years of the Venom GT program and eventually found its way into a private collection. Years later, Hennessey had the opportunity to buy it back, bringing a significant piece of the company’s history back into its own collection.
The Venom GT began with a pretty simple idea, at least on paper. Hennessey wanted to build an American hypercar capable of going toe-to-toe with the fastest cars in the world, and the biggest names, like Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Pagani. After completing the first car and attracting interest from a collector in the Middle East, John realized that building a single example would not make sense financially. If the project was going to work, he needed to build more. From 2011 through 2016, Hennessey produced just eight Venom GTs in total, making its an exceptionally rare hypercar even before going on its record-setting runs.
Those records are a major part of the Venom GT story. In 2013, the car recorded a 0-to-186mph time of 13.63 seconds, earning a Guinness World Record. The following year, a Venom GT Coupe reached 270.49 mph at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, putting Hennessey firmly into the conversation surrounding the world's fastest production cars. The Venom GT Spyder followed in 2016 with a 265.6-mph run, setting yet another major benchmark for the American-built hypercar.
But the Venom GT's biggest impact might have come after the records. The car proved that Hennessey's ambitions could extend well beyond tuning factory performance cars. It laid the groundwork for the Venom F5 and helped establish Hennessey Special Vehicles as a manufacturer capable of developing its own hypercars in-house. Seeing this particular Venom GT return to the Hennessey Collection brings that story full circle. It is a reminder of the risk, experimentation, and determination behind the company's earliest hypercar project, and a physical piece of history from the moment Hennessey decided to see just how far, and fast, the idea could go.
