McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. CURATED Rallies Eddie Van Halen's Lamborghini Miura After...

A famous supercar classic roars back to life. In the iconic 1984 song “Panama” by Van Halen, the engine of a car can be heard revving right after the song’s guitar solo. That car was the late Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini Miura, a legendary example of what is often called the first supercar. Whether it’s the beauty, the performance, or the iconic V12 engine of the Miura, there’s near-universal appeal to enthusiasts worldwide, and add that appeal to that of one of the most iconic bands and songs of the 80s, and this incredible historic supercar is one of the most admirable creations in the automotive world. CURATED, known for uncovering and celebrating the stories of some of the world’s rarest classic supercars, purchased the Miura from Van Halen years ago, and collaborated with Lamborghini’s Polo Storico department to restore the car, true to the specifications that Van Halen originally opted for in the car. The project took a long four years to complete, but having been finished in 2023, came together just in time for Lamborghini’s 60th anniversary. To celebrate the momentous anniversary and the completion of the restoration of Eddie Van Halen’s Lamborghini Miura, the car joined 26 other vintage Lamborghinis in a rally to Lamobrghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy factory. To complete the serendipity of the event, Ingrid, who was Ferrucio Lamborghini’s personal assistant, made an appearance. The intersection of some of the greatest stories and legends in Lamborghini’s 60-year history made this long restoration process of an important car worth every minute. This monumental event, led by Automobili Lamborghini's top executives, Stephan Winkelmann, and Andrea Baldi, was more than just a display of automotive grandeur; it was a drive for change. The record-breaking rally gathering stood out as a quest to boost awareness and support for men’s health issues under the banner of the renowned Movember charity. The 2023 Lamborghini x Movember "Bull Run" commenced at the iconic Santa Monica Pier and carved its path through the Malibu canyons, concluding at the vineyards of Calamigos Ranch. The rally marked the third annual alliance between the Italian automaker and the charity, as part of a series of global events throughout November. The fuel-driven event is not just about the striking visuals of a Lamborghini parade or the melodious symphony of their engines; it's a statement to the community's commitment to combating men’s health challenges, specifically prostate and testicular cancer, as well as mental health crises and suicide. Lamborghini's dedication to the cause was recognized, as Winkelmann acknowledged the significance of their involvement and the enthusiastic participation of their clientele, especially in their largest U.S. market, California. Lamborghini Announces Its Third Year Of Support For Movember

The supercar manufacturer is driving awareness and support for men’s health with global initiatives. Automobili Lamborghini is no stranger to the fast lane, and this November, the iconic 60-year-old brand is accelerating an important cause: men’s health. For the third consecutive year, the prestigious Italian carmaker has announced its support for the Movember charity, intertwining the worlds of luxury automobiles and global health advocacy. Movember, an initiative that sprouted in London in 2003, has since blossomed into the leading men’s health charity, wielding a mustache as its rallying symbol. This emblematic approach to advocacy underscores the fight against a varied range of important men's health issues. To date, Movember has launched over 1,300 projects globally, advancing both research and awareness with every stride. Lamborghini’s chairman and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, expressed the brand's commitment to the cause, underscoring the company's hope and intent to make a measurable impact through support. “Every single action taken globally and locally can help raise awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds,” said Winkelmann. Indeed, Lamborghini’s contribution extends far beyond financial aid—it's about mobilizing a community. And mobilize they do, with the annual “Bull Run” rallies, which feature more than 800 Lamborghini cars worldwide, each adorned with a symbolic mustache, parading through city streets, a sight that not only turns heads but also turns conversations towards an often overlooked topic. These rallies, igniting from various dealerships across five continents, serve as a drive for change. In 2023, Lamborghini has geared up to launch new ventures to propel Movember's visibility. A standout collaboration with Bologna Football Club aims to tackle the charity’s message into a wider field. A striking Huracán Tecnica, armed with QR codes linking to health-focused content, will take a stand near the Renato Dall’Ara stadium during a prime football matchup. This strategic play reaches beyond the automotive community to sports fans, widening the sphere of influence. However, the message of Movember and its spirit of advocacy transcends gender, and Lamborghini’s inclusivity in the movement is exemplified through their official Movember fundraising campaign, aptly named “LAMBORGHINI MOVEMBER BULLS.” This initiative invites everyone to participate, reflecting solidarity that runs deeper than their cars’ roars. In the spirit of their tagline, "Italian Excellence That Makes the World Dream," Lamborghini dreams of a healthier world at large. For those looking to contribute or delve deeper into the Movember mission, Lamborghini encourages a visit to Movember.com, where awareness and donations drive towards a healthier future for men around the globe. New Lamborghini Podcast Brings Together Exotic Cars And M...

Lamborghini's Head of Design Mitja Borkert collaborates with music industry's Simon Halfon in a captivating episode of “Beyond: a Lamborghini podcast.” When Lamborghini’s Head of Design, Mitja Borkert, met with Simon Halfon—a music industry designer and film producer, magic ensued. The two creative powerhouses recently came together in the fourth episode of “Beyond: a Lamborghini podcast,” engaging in a groundbreaking conversation that blended the worlds of exotic cars and iconic music. In this unique video episode, the duo delved into the often-overlooked parallels between automotive design and music, explaining how the latter has greatly influenced their personal and professional lives. Mitja Borkert, hailing from East Germany, found inspiration in pop music and culture despite the barriers that existed in the 1980s. This inspiration eventually molded him into the visionary behind Lamborghini’s luxurious and super-fast beasts. He called his first encounter with Depeche Mode a “spaceship moment,” highlighting the profound impact music had on his creative career. Simon Halfon, on the other hand, cites The Beatles as a cornerstone influence. Starting in the mailroom at Stiff records during the era of '80s Punk and New Wave, Halfon eventually segued into design, representing artists like George Michael and Oasis. The podcast, aptly titled “Music for the Eyes,” celebrates the reciprocal relationship between design and music. It shows that while you may be maneuvering a 769-horsepower Lamborghini Aventador, the design elements you admire could have roots in a classic Beatles album or an electrifying Depeche Mode track. "Music is part of every sketch," says Mitja, reiterating how art forms like album covers have influenced his work in automotive design. Exploring themes such as ‘spaceship moments’ and creativity, the episode also addressed the challenges and breakthroughs in both their respective careers. From dealing with declining record sales to understanding that even a beautifully designed car isn’t enough without performance, both men drew on real-world examples to paint a vivid picture of their professional journeys. They acknowledged the role of passion and vision in pushing boundaries, whether it’s creating a record sleeve or sketching the next Lamborghini masterpiece. Beyond just an exchange of creative ideas, the podcast even saw the two switch roles. Simon Halfon tried his hand at car design, while Mitja Borkert designed a record cover, emphasizing the fluidity of creativity across different mediums. The episode ended on a future-forward note, questioning the role of AI in design and expressing excitement about upcoming concerts they plan to attend. This episode of "Beyond: a Lamborghini podcast" is a must-listen for fans of both high-octane cars and legendary music. It not only celebrates the creative journeys of two industry titans but also brings to light the incredible synergy between the worlds of exotic cars and music, a match that many might find surprising but is truly music for the eyes. Lamborghini Hits Historic Highs In 2023: Sales, Turnover,...

Lamborghini's first nine months of 2023 break records with over $2.12 billion turnover and 7,744 cars delivered. The brand teases an electrifying future with the Lanzador concept. Automobili Lamborghini is crushing 2023 with record-breaking performance, setting new milestones in sales, turnover, and profitability. For the first time in its history, Lamborghini's turnover outperformed the $2.12 billion mark in just nine months, reporting a 5.2% increase from last year. Even more impressive, the operating result hit $654 million, outperforming the entire fiscal year of 2022. CEO Stephan Winkelmann attributes this success to the company's skillfulness and strategic vision, hinting at an electrifying future with the upcoming Revuelto, Lamborghini's first plug-in hybrid. CFO Paolo Poma repeated the opinion, highlighting that the stellar nine-month performance indicates well for an unprecedentedly profitable year, strengthening Lamborghini's leadership in the luxury automotive industry. The sales figures speak volumes. A total of 7,744 cars were delivered, marking a 4.2% increase year-over-year. Additionally, these numbers mainly represent the internal combustion models, Urus and Huracan, which are sold out until their production ceases in late 2024. The sales were fairly distributed globally, 3,117 in EMEA, 2,728 in America, and 1,899 in Asia Pacific, with the United States taking the lead in individual markets. Lamborghini is also making strides in innovation and sustainability. The Lanzador concept car revealed during Monterey Car Week, stands out as a forerunner to Lamborghini's first fully electric model slated for 2028. The brand was also recently named a 2023/2024 Sustainability Champion, affirming its environmental commitments. The expanding global footprint of the brand is evident in the four new dealerships launched this quarter, in Sapporo, Lugano, Verona, and Budapest, taking the global count to 182 dealers in 54 markets. With the last quarter promising even greater success, Lamborghini's future looks as bright and fast as its supercars. Lamborghini Polo Storico Displays The First Production 19...

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Automobili Lamborghini is pulling out all the stops to make an impact at the 40th edition of the Auto e Moto d’Epoca classic car show. For the first time, the iconic Ialian supercar manufacturer will bring the event to its home province in Bologna, from October 26th to 29th. Lamborghini Polo Storico, the department dedicated to the brand's heritage, will be the main attraction, showcasing a lineup that includes two iconic models, the first Countach LP 400 produced and an Espada Series 3 under restoration. Started in 2015, Polo Storico is a reflection of Lamborghini's commitment to preserving its rich automotive and motorsport history. The department focuses on classic car restoration, certification of classic Lamborghini models up to the Diablo, and organizing events tailored for Lamborghini collectors. Their stand at the event promises a jaw-dropping display of Sant’Agata Bolognese’s automotive history, including the first-ever Countach LP 400. This red beauty, with chassis number 1120001, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1973. The car became a myth of sorts until its rediscovery in Switzerland in 2003, where it was confirmed to be the original Countach after restoration works revealed its initial red paint underneath a layer of green. Also turning heads will be the Espada Series 3, chassis number 8824. Launched in 1968, the Espada was Lamborghini's first venture into the four-seater market. This particular Espada is still in the restoration phase and is presented as a work-in-progress, allowing attendees to see a masterpiece in the making. For those lucky enough to be in Bologna during the event, the Lamborghini stand is located in Hall 32 between the Costituzione and Aldo Moro entrances to Bologna Fiere. Doors open at 9 a.m., giving car enthusiasts and collectors a golden opportunity to immerse themselves in the legacy of one of the world's most storied car brands.
