McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Lamborghini Fenomeno: Limited-Run Hybrid V12 Masterpiece ...

Back in late June, we touched upon the possibility of Lamborghini unveiling its most powerful road car ever at Monterey Car Week. Now, it’s official. Meet the new Lamborghini Fenomeno. Named after a brave and famous bull fought in Morelia, Mexico, in 2002, the Fenomeno, simply put, is the most powerful Lamborghini ever made. Limited to just 29 units or 30 if you count the example destined for the Lamborghini Museum, this V12 hybrid joins a long line of limited-run flagship Lamborghinis conceived over the past two decades. The Fenomeno builds on the “Few Off” tradition, comprising models like the Reventón, Sesto Elemento, and Veneno. It is both a rolling design showcase and a celebration of 20 years of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile design studio, which has shaped some of the Italian marque’s most daring creations since 2005. Let’s kick things off with the numbers. You’re looking at a combined 1,065 horsepower, courtesy of the most powerful naturally aspirated V12 that Lamborghini has ever built, a 6.5-liter unit producing 824 horsepower and revving to 9,500 rpm, plus three electric motors that add another 242 horsepower. The result is 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds, 0 124 mph in 6.7 seconds, and a top speed over 217 mph. More impressively, though, the Fenomeno achieves a 3.6 lb/hp weight-to-power ratio, the best in the brand’s history. The drivetrain layout is unusual, even by hypercar standards. The V12 powers the rear wheels, while two oil-cooled axial-flow electric motors handle the front axle, providing torque vectoring and regenerative braking. A third motor above the new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox can decouple for pure EV driving or supply extra torque to the rear wheels. The small but potent battery is tuned for performance bursts rather than long electric stints, yet its EV range is practical enough for zero-emissions short drives. Compared with the Lamborghini Revuelto’s 1,001 horsepower and 3.8 lb/hp ratio, the Fenomeno is lighter, more powerful, and more focused. Its 7 kWh lithium-ion battery doubles the Revuelto’s energy storage, unlocking roughly 12 miles of pure electric driving. The chassis, dubbed “monofuselage,” is an all-carbon fiber monocoque with a forged composite front structure, a technique Lamborghini pioneered on the 2007 Reventón. Here, it is pushed even further to reduce weight and increase torsional rigidity. The braking system is straight from Lamborghini’s LMDh race program: CCM-R Plus carbon-ceramic discs with a unique long-fiber carbon matrix, offering shorter stopping distances and improved brake feel, especially on track. Unlike the Revuelto’s electronically adaptive suspension, the Fenomeno uses manually adjustable racing dampers for owners who want full control over track setup. The Fenomeno rides on custom Bridgestone Potenza Sport tires, run-flat capable by default with optional semi-slicks for track work. The staggered setup features 21-inch fronts on 10.4-inch-wide 265/30ZR21 tires and 22-inch rears on 14-inch-wide 355/25ZR22 rubber. Coming to the styling, where the Fenomeno features a notably distinctive design when compared to the Révuelto, upon which it is based, aerodynamics remain an integral part of the package. There's a good dose of the signature hexagonal forms, and the sharknose front-end does away with the Y-shaped lights seen on the Révuleto for slimmer units. The S-Duct increases front downforce, the concave roof channels air directly to the engine and rear wing, and even the doors aid in cooling the radiators. You have side NACA-style air intakes and integrated aero elements in the rear haunches, and an aggressive diffuser at the rear. Side-cooling efficiency is up 30 percent over other V12 Lamborghinis, thanks to a three-position active rear wing. When viewed from the side, the overall form has a long-tailed form with a pronounced ductail at the rear, which also includes a massive hexagonal housing for the exhaust, flanked by twin Y-shaped LED tail lights. A carbon-roof leads into a roof-scoop to feed more air to the V12. Inside, the Fenomeno's futuristic cockpit is stripped for purpose yet rich in tech. Three digital displays replace most physical controls, the seats are bespoke to this model, and nearly every surface is carbon fiber. Unique details like 3D-printed air vents and contour-following ambient lighting give it a spaceship-like vibe. For those seeking more personalization, Lamborghini’s bespoke Ad Personam program offers over 400 exterior colors and nearly limitless interior combinations. At over 1,000 horsepower, with tech drawn straight from endurance racing, and with only 29 units up for grabs, the Fenomeno is both a statement of engineering intent and a guaranteed collector’s piece. It is also one of the last purely combustion-based V12 Lamborghinis before full electrification inevitably takes hold. 2025 Monterey Car Week might be your first and only chance to see one in the metal. Pricing has not been disclosed, but with predecessors like the Centenario and Sián commanding well into seven figures, expect the Fenomeno’s price to hover around $3.5 million if you can even get an allocation, that is. Lamborghini puts an Ad Personam twist on the Temerario. Emerging as the brand’s new entry-level supercar, the Lamborghini not only replaced the Huracán but also defied many of its conventions, swapping the V10 engine that powered the Huracán and its predecessor, the Gallardo, for a twin-turbo V8 that revs to a searing 10,000 rpm, sat alongside a plug-in hybrid setup. Lamborghini Posts Record H1 2025 Sales Figures, Credits H...

Despite economic headwinds and geopolitical instability, Lamborghini has managed to stave off broader market pressures and deliver strong sales numbers. The Italian marque has wrapped up the first half of 2025 with €1.62 billion in revenue and 5,681 cars delivered; the highest first-half sales figure in the company’s history. Regional breakdown shows EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) leading the charge with 2,708 deliveries, followed by the Americas with 1,732, and APAC (Asia-Pacific) with 1,241 units. We reported earlier this year on Lamborghini’s impressive Q1 performance, where the company posted €895.2 million in revenue and delivered 2,967 units, a 29.6% revenue increase year-over-year. That momentum clearly hasn’t slowed, and according to Lamborghini, at the heart of this success are two new flagships: the Revuelto, Lamborghini’s first V12 plug-in hybrid, and the Urus SE SUV, the hybrid version of its best-seller. Now, with H1 operating profit at €431 million and a strong 26.6% profit margin, it appears that Lamborghini’s all-hybrid gamble is paying off. CEO Stephan Winkelmann, in fact, specifically credited the brand’s success to its strategic shift toward full hybridisation. “The results confirm that the decision to hybridize the entire range was the right one,” he said. CFO, Paolo Poma, added that these results confirm the brand’s resilience built over the years and its status among the global luxury elite. Strong demand for the 1,015-horsepower Revuelto has pushed its waiting list out to two years. At the other end of the spectrum, the Urus SE offers 800 horsepower, improved comfort, lower emissions, and sharper performance, making it a more refined yet no less capable evolution of the Urus S. Compared with the broader luxury segment, Ferrari also posted strong results in Q1 2025. The Italian marque is yet to post its H1 results. Shipments rose to 3,593 units, with sales being led by high-value models like the SF90 XX family and the Purosangue. Also, in light of the new U.S.-EU trade framework reached on Sunday, it needs to be seen how automakers operating in the luxury and performance car markets adapt, but Lamborghini appears to be unfazed, with production already running at full capacity, and its product rollout is just getting started. Next up is the Temerario, the V8-powered HPEV supercar that just made its dynamic debut at Estoril in Portugal (Watch out for our track-test review). The entry-level model will complete Lamborghini’s transition to a fully hybrid model range under the brand’s Direzione Cor Tauri roadmap. A Day In The Life Of A Lamborghini Polo Storico Technician

Lamborghini shows what it takes to preserve its rich history. After more than 60 years of making some of the world’s greatest Italian supercars, Lamborghini has a storied lineup that includes cars that defined and changed standards for luxury performance cars throughout the industry. For the past ten years, however, Lamborghini’s Polo Storico department has been dedicated to preserving and celebrating that history, painstakingly restoring cars among other feats of engineering and craftsmanship excellence to showcase the story of Lamborghini’s automotive pedigree in motion. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Polo Storico this year, Lamborghini brought guests from all over the world to experience the day-to-day activities of a Lamborghini Polo Storico technician. The experience saw guests working alongside Polo Storico staff and “Comitato dei Saggi,” former Lamborghini employees who now serve as consultants with insight on the cars of the brand’s past. The activities during the experience also recreated the tasks of Polo Storico technicians, like carrying out road tests, pulling documents from the historical archive, verifying cars for a Polo Storico certification, and working in the workshop for restorations. Groups of two participants were each assigned to a specific car, including a 1967 400 GT 2+2, a 1990 Countach 25th Anniversary, a 2001 Diablo SE 6.0, and an LM 002. A 1973 Lamborghini Miura SV from the Lamborghini Museum collection was also worked on by the participants. Lamborghini’s partner in the initiative, Pirelli, has been a partner of Lamborghini since the beginning in the early 1960s, which means that Prielli contributes its own ability to recreate original tires for Lamborghini cars from the past to Polo Storico. The experience saw guests learning about the history of Lamborghini’s partnership with Pirelli, which originally began when Ferruccio Lamborghini asked Pirelli to create tires for the original Lamborghini: the 350 GTV. Lamborghini brings an extensive supercar lineup to experience a New England summer. The American Northeast is full of stunning natural beauty and rich history, with engaging driving roads making for an unforgettable experience when chasing after the area’s stunning vistas, especially in the summer season. Lamborghini took full advantage of New England’s beauty during its recent Esperienza Giro USA, where it took some of its greatest supercars from the mountains of Lake Placid in upstate New York to the coastline of Maine. Taking place over five days, the tour featured over 30 Lamborghinis, including the new Revuelto hybrid V12 flagship, the Huracán STO, Sterrato, Tecnica, and Performante, the Aventador S Roadster, SV, and LP 700-4, and the ultra-rare Countach LPI 800-4. With incredible luxury hospitality experiences alongside the unforgettable driving rally, the Lamborghini Esperienza Giro USA in New England was executed in true Lamborghini style. The Adirondacks served as the first day’s driving backdrop, with guests staying at the historic Woodstock Inn, which was established by the Rockefellers. After that, driving through Vermont was interpolated with a fly fishing experience and dinner at the Simon Pearce restaurant. The final day of driving through the White Mountains featured ziplining. The grand finale of the incredible summer experience was a local clambake in Maine and a sunrise sail along the coastline. The Lamborghini Revuelto gets a carbon fiber makeover. The Lamborghini Revuelto has emerged as the new V12 flagship from the historic supercar manufacturer, this time as a plug-in hybrid that not only evolves the efficiency of the vehicle, but also allows it to achieve unprecedented levels of power, specifically a total of 1,001 horsepower on tap. With striking design and immense performance potential, the Lamborghini Revuelto is a truly head-turning machine, but aftermarket firms specialize in turning even the most exclusive supercars into unique statements, with Vorsteiner being no exception. The California-based specialist in custom carbon fiber aerodynamic components has recently launched its first aerodynamics package for the Lamborghini Revuelto. The kit not only enhances the visual appeal of the Revuelto with a sporty edge, but it also increases the downforce, decreases the weight, and improves the airflow. Lamborghini brings its new era of hybrid excellence to Goodwood. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a celebration of all kinds of automotive excellence, whether that be time-honored classics, some of the greatest luxury and performance vehicles of today, or motorsport legends. Lamborghini’s rich heritage and stunning lineup means that as a manufacturer, it can contribute to much of what makes the Festival of Speed Special, and with many of its masterpieces, it made a splash at the idyllic, prestigious, and anticipated annual automotive gathering. The brand’s presence at the event included the presence of its Chairman and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, as well as of its various exotic cars. The Temerario GT3, the successor to the prolific Huracán GT3, was revealed at the vent, while the Temerario made its public dynamic debut on the Hillclimb, joined by Lamborghini’s Urus SE, a plug-in hybrid Super SUV, and the V12 plug-in hybrid flagship supercar from Lamborghini, the Revuelto.
