Leica is bringing Formula 1 into its camera lineup with a new special edition built around the Leica Q3 43. The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition launched at the Leica Store and Gallery with Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button, with an exhibit of motorsport photographs by Italian photographer Callo Albanese. The biggest changes are in the camera’s finish and handling, with genuine carbon fiber on the handgrip, thumb rest, and soft-release shutter button. The grip is covered in black Microvelour textured to resemble a racing steering wheel, while red accents on the controls take inspiration from the color-coded buttons drivers use in the cockpit. An F1 logo is etched on the top plate and lens cap, and it includes a co-branded rope strap and custom packaging. Its 43mm APO-Summicron f/2 ASPH. lens is designed for a natural perspective that works well for candid shots, portraits, and capturing everything happening around the paddock. A full-frame back-side illuminated CMOS sensor offers 60-, 36-, or 18-megapixel shooting options, while hybrid autofocus and video capabilities make it suitable for more than still photography. Rather than relying on zoom, the fixed lens encourages photographers to get closer to the action.

The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition is available today through Leica stores, the brand’s online store, and authorized specialist retailers for $9,950. It is also compatible with accessories made for the Leica Q3 and Q3 43, so owners can use it with existing cameras.
