McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. It may glide silently, but the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air sports boat is making some serious noise in the boating world! This all-electric day cruiser just smashed the speed record at the 12th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, hitting an average of 49.84 knots (that's 92.3 km/h or 57.3 mph) over two one-kilometer (0.62 mile) runs, beating the previous record at the event of 47 knots (86.9 km/h or 54 mph), set by Lanéva Boats back in 2023. Now, this isn’t the first time that Porsche has been associated with something nautical. Remember the Hermes Speedster that draws design cues from the 356? However, the Fantom Air is a blend of Frauscher's nearly 100-year legacy in building high-performance boats and Porsche's cutting-edge E-Performance expertise. Competing in the Open Sea class, the 28-foot Fantom that dominated in Monaco was a standard production model, finished in a cool Oakgreen Metallic Neo paint job with a closed foredeck. "We are very happy about the success at the event. It proves that Porsche E-Performance enables top performance not only on the road, but also on the water." - Jörg Kerner, Vice President of the Macan product line Porsche supplies the high-voltage battery, electric motor, and control unit as preassembled modules, then Frauscher takes over for the final assembly at their Ohlsdorf shipyard in Upper Austria. At its heart lies Porsche's impressive 800-volt electric drivetrain, straight out of the Macan Turbo EV. It features a permanent magnet synchronous motor pumping out up to 400 kW (536 horsepower), and the 100 kWh battery pack can provide a maximum range of 62 miles, with support for up to 270 kW DC fast charging. When you're at the helm, you'll notice some truly unique Porsche details like the tachometer, a start button on the left (just like in Porsche sports cars!), and a steering wheel straight from a Macan. Even the cockpit layout and gauges will remind you of a 911. The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is a big deal for sustainable marine innovation, and even Prince Albert II of Monaco, who attended the event, got a detailed tour of the eFantom from Stefan Frauscher, Managing Director of Frauscher Bootswerft. Also, like with Porsche sportscars available as coupes or convertibles, the Fantom 850 can be had as a Runabout or Air, Frauscher gives buyers two layout options: the Runabout, with a closed foredeck, classic styling, and a cabin underneath, or the Air, which features a center helm and an open bow with seating and lounging space. Limited to 25 units, the Frauscher x Porsche Fantom carries a sticker price of $604,000. For some context, an Aston Martin AM37 cost somewhere in the ballpark of $1.6-$2.1 million, while the 63-foot Lamborghini Tecnomar was $4.7 million when new. Protecting What I Love With Protection Films And Coatings

My boating background started as a young one, as far back as a 4 year old growing up on the water, fishing, and tubing with my family during the summer. This passion for boats and water has always been a part of my life. Over the last 20 years, I have personally had multiple boats; from 5 Wakeboard/Ski boats, to 2 regular Runabout boats, and 3 Go-Fast boats ranging in length from 21 feet long up to a 38-foot offshore style go-fast boat. XPEL Marine Window Film not only makes the boat look sleeker but also serves a greater purpose. With the window film installed, I can now see my large dash displays that are like two mini-iPads. Before, the sun’s glare was so bad it was hard to see the displays in the sun. Now I can see them clearly, while in full sun. This will also prevent the screens and vinyl dash from being damaged or faded by the sun’s harmful UV rays. I feel like this was a great improvement, as this helps solve multiple issues we have here in Arizona. XPEL Marine Protection Film (MPF) was installed on the complete sides of the hull from bow to stern. MPF was also installed on the rear transom and along the leading edges of the swim platform. We then protected all high-impact areas on the upper edges of the boat where people put their arms and get in and out of the boat for added protection. This will ensure there is no chance of scratching the gelcoat and protect it from general wear and tear. A marine protection film was installed here for multiple reasons. Any time you are tied up at the dock, you will get scratches from the dock and your bumpers, regardless of how good your bumpers are or how careful you are. Also, doing the complete sides of the hull stops any scratches from happening when loading the boat on the trailer from the guiding pulls – AKA my wife bumping them any time she loads the boat on the trailer. Doing this also helps offer protection from road debris and chips from truck or trailer tires while traveling down the road. Protecting the rear transom and swim platform is a must. Over the years, owning ski and wake boats, I have had more people hit the transom and swim platform with wakeboards or skis. These impacts have scratched or chipped the boat's gelcoat, generating costly repairs from the damage. XPEL Marine Ceramic Coating was applied on all gelcoat surfaces, PPF, and glass. There is nothing worse than cleaning a 95% black boat after a great day on the water. Before doing the PPF and Ceramic Coating, this would take 30-40 minutes to wipe down correctly. XPEL Marine Ceramic Coating has been a game changer. This now takes 10 minutes to do correctly, even in our 110-degree-plus summer weather in Arizona. No Engine, No Fuel: Ferrari Hypersail Racing Yacht Is Th...

Ferrari is well established in the world of motorsports and performance cars, but the Maranello-based brand will soon also enter the world of sailing, as it recently revealed details about: Hypersail, an innovative and world-first 100-foot self-sufficient racing monohull, that quite literally flies across the water. Think of it as Ferrari’s endurance-racing ethos, seen in the triumphant 499P Le Mans Hypercar, reborn as a carbon-fiber ocean-going vessel, all without burning a single drop of fuel. It will feature two-steering wheels and have roo for more than eight people on board. Now, this isn’t the first time that the Ferrari name has been associated with the Nautical world. Back in 1952, the " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> powered by a 4.5-liter Ferrari V12 derived from a 375 F1, set a 150.19 mph water-speed record in its category (800kg class) that still stands to this day. Decades later, in the ‘90s, Ferrari designers collaborated with Riva, the legendary Italian yacht and boat builder and lifestyle partner of Ferrari’s Formula 1 team. It led to the Riva Ferrari 32, a gleaming-red speedboat with Ferrari-style and twin BMW V8s, which each produce 390 horsepower. With Hypersail, however, it will be the first time that a Prancing Horse will appear on a hull; and what a hull it is. Designed by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier, best known for his America’s Cup and innovations in the Vendée Globe, the Hypersail introduces a radical configuration for a monohull: a canting keel, which also supports one of the boat’s three foils, alongside a foil on the rudder and alternating lateral foils. At high speeds, the yacht rises up almost entirely out of the water, resulting in considerably less drag, which in turn increases efficiency. This is what separates the Hypersail from anything else on the ocean today. While America’s Cup yachts already employ foiling monohulls, they are a lot shorter, lighter and are primarily optimized for in-shore match racing. The Hypersail, meanwhile, is being designed as a deep-ocean endurance vessel, engineered to maintain stable flight for thousands of nautical miles, amid unpredictable offshore conditions. No America’s Cup boat is really designed for that kind of range or resilience. Also, when compared to multihulls, such as trimarans or catamarans, which rely on beam width for stability, Hypersail’s narrow monohull form factor is more hydrodynamically efficient. While multihulls are extremely stable on flat water, they’re also more vulnerable offshore and can capsize in rough conditions, owing to their rigidity. As for the Hypersail, it features an active foil control system and a dynamically shifting keel. Derived from Ferrari’s simulation and vehicle dynamic expertise, it offers the self-righting stability of a monohull, but with the lift and speed of a multihull, without added wind resistance or structural drag. As previously mentioned, all this will be accomplished without relying on any fossil fuels. Where Ferrari’s all-electric cars have taken a back seat for now, when it comes to Hypersail, it will be the first 100-foot monohull of its kind, to be entirely energy self-sufficient, and will be powered by nothing but renewable sources of energy like wind, solar as well as kinetic energy. Every watt needed to adjust the foils, power the sensors, and run the computer systems will be harvested from the environment, while sailing nonstop and unsupported through some of the world’s most unforgiving waters. Ferrari says that this is a platform of open innovation and a long-term research and development testbed. Giovanni Soldini, one of Italy’s most seasoned sailors and team principal of the Hypersail, has called this project a revolutionary boat in many respects, as it presents the chance to blend Ferrari’s control systems and aerospace-grade simulation tools, with the harsh lessons that can only be learnt on the open sea. Ferrari chairman John Elkann sees Hypersail as more than a yacht. With nine patents filed so far and more underway, he added this was an opportunity to innovate in both the nautical and automotive worlds. He further added that it broadens the brand's racing DNA, as is the case with endurance racing that has been a part of the Ferrari story since the very day founder Enzo Ferrari founded the company. New GX Superyachts Brand Debuts At 2024 Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show serves as the birthplace of a new brand. Monaco is one of the world’s premier yachting destinations, serving as one of the world’s biggest luxury hubs with a glittering Riviera coastline. However, something special has taken place recently in Monaco, and that is the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show, where the water is full of incredible luxury vessels showcased as the latest and greatest in yachting luxury. However, among the hundreds of exhibitors and vessels showcased at the event, an entirely new brand emerged with a futuristic approach to luxury yachtbuilding: GX Superyachts. The new brand unveiled a wide range of new superyachts, from 78 to 164 feet, and its 138-foot model is already in build. With development expertise from Greenline Yachts, makers of the first production hybrid yacht over 32 feet in 2008, the inspiration for GX Superyachts came from Prince Albert II of Monaco himself taking an interest in the all-electric Greenline boat, requesting an escort to the Monaco Yacht Club in it. GX Superyachts uses hybrid propulsion systems that combine the best of diesel power and electric-powered cruising for efficient and highly capable sailing. As a result, GX Superyachts says that its range can offer 100 nautical miles of purely electric range while also being able to cross the Atlantic with its diesel mode, all while reducing carbon emissions by 40 percent compared to conventional yachts. The first GX42, the 138-foot model, is already being built. Delivery is slated for 2026, and the hull is already halfway through being welded. With the design talent of Marco Casali behind the range, the GX42, and the rest of the range, features a coupe variant and an RPH variant. His interior design vision is also lent to the first GX42 example, with furniture from Poltrona Frau and finishes from renowned vendors. Dynamiq reveals its newest superyacht. Founded in Monaco in 2014, Dynamiq has quickly established itself as a leader in crafting some of the world's most luxurious superyachts. Today, Dynamiq has unveiled the exterior and interior renderings of its 52-meter flagship, the GTT 170. Designed by Dobroserdov Design, its design features strong masculine lines with fewer curves and more angles. Stainless steel and carbon accents highlight the yacht’s new high-tech look. Inside, Milanese architect Claudio Pironi delivers a minimalist interior, styling marble and teak for a more natural look. The GTT 170 stands out as one of the most spacious yachts in its class, offering five guest staterooms and a luxury owner’s suite. Amentities include a dedicated spa zone complete with a sauna and gym, as well as a two-tiered beach club that maximizes outdoor space with folding bulwarks. The sundeck also offers a multifunctional space, including an outdoor cinema lounge for relaxing under the stars. Collaborating once again with Dutch naval architects Vripack, Dynamiq has designed a superyacht that is set for delivery in Spring 2027.
