McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Lanzante 95-59: A Modern Three-Seat Tribute To The Le Man...

It may look like a McLaren, but what you’re looking at here is something entirely more nuanced and very special. This is the Lanzante 95-59, a three-seater sports car that is the British firm’s boldest project to date, and it just broke cover at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Three weeks ago, we teased this carbon-clad tribute with glimpses of its sculpted bodywork, LED tail lights, and that signature floating wing. Now, here it is in full view, and while it borrows its bones from McLaren’s 750S, it has been completely reimagined with one clear inspiration: the 1995 Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR chassis #59 run by Lanzante themselves and piloted by Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya, and JJ Lehto. Hence, the name: 95-59. For some context, this is also the same outfit that has turned P1 GTRs into road cars and the 95:59 for Lanzante, represents a culmination of everything that they've achieved since that historic Le Mans win, 30 years ago. Now, at first glance, the 95-59 appears to carry familiar McLaren proportions, but look closer and everything’s been tightened. The new front end replaces the 750’s pinched lights with a carbon-clad fascia. From the side, it’s a combination of painted surfaces that overlap with sunken carbon insets and subtly aggressive bodywork. Much of that credit goes to Paul Howse, the former McLaren designer behind the P1 and 720S, who styled the 95-59 with seamless surfacing and purposeful aerodynamics. Everything that’s carbon serves a purpose. Everything that’s painted flows in one unbroken motion. A highlight is the pillar-mounted mirrors, an option on the McLaren F1. At the back? Active aero, a central spine, and a race-grade exhaust system visually reinforce the car’s single most radical departure: its seating layout. Yes, this is a three-seater, but unlike the stretched Speedtail, the 95-59's carbon tub has been completely reengineered to accommodate the iconic McLaren F1-style layout: with the driver front and center, flanked by two slightly staggered passenger seats. This required moving the pedal box, heating system, and even reshaping the fuel tank to maximize range. The result? A supercar with a 20-gallon tank, enough luggage space upfront, and a curb weight of just 2,755 pounds, which is frankly remarkable for a modern twin-turbo V8 sports car and comes close to the McLaren F1’s 2,513 pounds. Lanzante wanted to create a supercar that was usable in the real world. As for the powerplant, it's still the familiar 4.0-liter McLaren V8 under the skin, which now produces over 850 horsepower, 100 more than the 750S. Based on customer demand and feedback, there are no hybrid systems, no electric trickery here, just mechanical purity with long legs and the ability to tour cross country. But make no mistake: this car is so much more than a tribute. It’s a challenge to over-complicate and define what a driver’s car should be in 2025. Only 59 examples will ever exist and for those lucky enough to get their hands on this for £1.3 million ($1.77 million) creation, they will be part of a highly exclusive club who have the privilege of owning a car that shares its basic ethos with other three-seater exotics like the McLaren F1 (+$20 million), McLaren Speedtail (~2.5 million) and the Gordon Murray T.50 (~$2.3million), all at a slightly more attainable price-point. For most car collectors and enthusiasts, the McLaren F1 represents the pinnacle of what a timeless supercar can and should be. Originally priced at $1 million by McLaren in the 1990s, the value of an F1 has since soared well past the $20 million mark, mainly driven by its expert engineering, low production numbers, and historic motorsport roots. What started as a street-legal road car with the LM and GT variants eventually led to winning GTR race cars, with production numbers kept low to meet homologation requirements, adding even more significance to its ongoing legacy. And while it's not unheard of to witness the sale of a McLaren F1 at auction or through a private sale, it's the complete opposite for the F1 LM and its 28 examples. The McLaren masterminds at Lanzante are proud to celebrate one of the most iconic McLaren F1 GTRs with an anniversary collection debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. For those who appreciate motorsport history, the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans win by the #59 McLaren F1 GTR still feels unreal. Nearly three decades later, Lanzante is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at that iconic weekend with Jet Black 59, a limited-edition photobook by Japanese photographer Mikio Hasui. Hasui has a personal connection to the race as he's the brother-in-law of winning driver Masanori Sekiya. He was on-site at Le Mans, capturing over 100 candid moments using black-and-white film and classic Leica and Canon cameras. His photos show a rare and unfiltered glimpse into life in the pit lane, prep in the garage, and the team's emotion throughout the 24-hour battle. With handwritten notes translated from Japanese, Jet Black 59 is both a historical document and a passion project from someone who lived it. To mirror the rarity of the book, the first 59 numbered editions are paired with a detailed 1:18-scale model of the McLaren F1 GTR, chassis 01R, made by Japanese specialists Make Up. It's complete with race grime, panel tape remains, and subtle wear only known through insider knowledge from the original team. For collectors, hand-signed prints are available in various sizes and have been developed using traditional wet printing techniques. All pieces will be sold for the first time at the Lanzante boutique during the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, making this a rare opportunity to own part of one of racing's greatest stories. Every year, the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir comes alive as it plays host to one of the most action-packed opening races on the Formula 1 racing calendar. But this past weekend, the legendary race circuit took center stage for something equally awe-inspiring and impressive: a collection of not one, not two, but a staggering 20 exquisite examples of McLaren road cars. This is the ‘Last Of Legends’ collection curated and spec’d by none other than the late McLaren Billionaire shareholder Mansour Akram Ojjeh (1952-2021), a pivotal figure in the British marque’s storied history, besides Ron Dennis, Gordon Murray, and founder Bruce McLaren himself. Now, after years in private storage, the collection is coming up for sale, and the Ojjeh family has entrusted Tom Hartley Jnr with the sale. The U.K.-based firm has also previously handled the sale of former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s 69 Grand Prix F1 cars. Mansour Ojjeh’s Legacy Current McLaren CEO Zak Brown with the Mansour Family Born to a French mother and Saudi father, Akram Ojjeh Mansour was educated in California, which is where his love for cars really took off. During his youth, he owned everything from a Lamborghini Countach to a Rolls-Royce Corniche. The man once even had a stunning Ferrari collection with models like a 250 California Spyder and a 288 GTO, to name a few. But his dream was to build the ultimate McLaren road car collection, and the result of those efforts, going back several decades, is what lies in front of us. Ojjeh’s journey with motorsport began in the late 1970s, early ‘80s, after he took over as CEO of Techniques d’Avant Garde (TAG), the Luxembourg-based investment firm that has stakes in everything from aviation and Formula 1 to luxury goods. While TAG sponsored Williams in 1979, it was Mansour’s decision to sponsor McLaren in 1984 that changed everything. That move bankrolled the legendary TAG-Porsche engines, launching an era of F1 dominance that would pretty much define the 1980s. Over the following four decades, Ojjeh’s influence and oversight helped McLaren deliver 10 Drivers’ and seven Constructors' championships. But more crucially, his financial backing also helped lay the building blocks of McLaren Automotive and was key to bringing cars like the record-breaking McLaren F1 to life. What this means is that the cars received all the major updates and revisions made during the production cycle. Also, every car in the collection is on delivery miles, with the exception of the crown Jewel of the collection, #075, or the final McLaren F1 road car ever built, which has 1,810 kilometers (1,124 miles), and the Frank-Stephenson-designed P1 GTR, used occasionally for McLaren track days. Other stunning cars in the collection include models like the open cockpit Elva roadster, a Senna (with accents of the Brazilian flag), 250 mph Speedtail, the spiritual successor to the McLaren F1, and currently, the fastest McLaren, the Sabre, and several limited-series cars, including Long-tail variants. Designed exclusively for the U.S. market, the Sabre hypercar is one of just 16 examples ever built by McLaren Special Operations (MSO). One thing that pretty much ties the entire collection together is the vibrant color. Originally dubbed Yquem, after the Château d’Yquem dessert wine, the shade was renamed ‘Mansour Orange’, and it was not available to any other McLaren customer, making each example a true bespoke one-off. No collector has received McLaren’s white glove service quite like Ojjeh has, and these cars were maintained by the factory, per his personal specifications. As one of the most complete McLaren collections ever, values are estimated to be anywhere between $70 and $100 million, with the aforementioned #075 McLaren F1 set to account for nearly a quarter of that sum. Tavarish's Flood-Damaged P1 Gets Wild Reboot As A 1400 HP...

YouTuber Tavarish (Freddy Hernandez) is no stranger to turning salvage title exotics into showroom beauties, along with buddies Ed Bolian of VinWiki and Tyler Hoover of Hoovies Garage, since the Car Trek days. But perhaps one of his biggest projects to date has got to be the restoration of the flood-damaged Volcano yellow McLaren P1 hypercar (previously owned by Ernie @lambo9286) that showed up on Copart Auctions, back in 2022. In an Instagram post on Christmas Day that year, Tavarish said that he’d buy the car if it received 40,000 likes. It eventually did, and the rest, as we know, is history. Previously worth $2 million, Freddy acquired the car for $575,000. Once the P1 landed in the shop, the damage was glaring: salt-laced water, shattered glass, corroded wiring, and a mold‑infested frunk. The doors and hood still opened, but the electronic systems were fried, and the hybrid battery was dead, clocking a rebuild budget in the mid‑six figures. For those who’ve been following the build so far, the team recently managed to drop an engine that is significantly more powerful than the original and were even successful in cranking it. It is a reworked M840T McLaren unit, with 1,400 horsepower. For reference, the stock setup with its twin-turbo V8 and electric motor put out 903 horsepower. But in a recent twist to the story, Frank Stephenson, who was the former design director of McLaren Automotive and " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> has decided to get involved. Stephenson, of course, is one of the most significant figures in the world of automotive design, having penned everything from the humble modern-day Mini and original BMW X5, to more extreme supercars and hypercars like the Ferrari F430, McLaren MP4-12C and the Maserati MC12. Besides his private practice, Stephenson also runs his own YouTube channel, where he lends his thoughts on the latest industry trends, critiques the styling of everything from classics to the latest supercars, and inspires the next generation of designers. It also serves as an outlet where he can let his imagination run wild in the digital world. A perfect example of this is when he sketched out one of his most radical creations ever. Dubbed 'Frankenstein', it is a culmination of some of his best works in a single hypercar, designed for GTA V. Tavarish’s McLaren P1 presents Frank with the opportunity to bring such incredible imagination to life. As someone who led the design of the original, there is no one better to envision what an even more extreme version of the P1 could look like. The plan is to create the McLaren P1 EVO, or as Tavrish puts it, the fastest McLaren in the world. Not fastest P1, fastest McLaren ever!! Which means it’ll have to be faster than the McLaren Speedtail’s 250 mph. The top speed of the stock P1 is rated at 217 mph. Based on the three digital renderings that Frank and his team have come up with so far, they’re certainly on the right path. All three designs follow a long-tail LT-style rear end, ideal for those high-speed runs. Within McLaren’s own stable, we’ve seen LT variants on the F1 GTR, the 675, and the Speedtail. From wild wings, including a never-before-seen Delta Wing and a unique variant that doesn’t feature a wing at all (opting for a Le Mans prototype fin), to reworked front and rear ends, aero-blade wheels, these are certainly some of the most extreme McLaren P1s ever dreamed of. It remains to be seen which design is eventually chosen for the build. Ironically, when few dared to buy what was the victim of Hurricane Ian that hit Southern Florida in 2022, Freddy took on the risk to save a part of the Holy Trinity lineage. Now, Frank’s involvement has considerably elevated the status and profile of this P1, as a 1-of-1 bespoke creation that seems destined to rewrite history.
