McMurtry’s Spéirling PURE is a track-only hypercar that represents the pinnacle of high-performance electric vehicle engineering. However, the immense power, incredible aerodynamics, and unfathomable performance is the result of a decade of engineering prowess, as McMurtry is officially celebrating its 10th anniversary since the manufacturer was founded in 2016. With a brand new production facility in the Cotswolds region of England, McMurtry Automotive is beginning its second decade with production of the Spéirling PURE hypercar, bringing its uncanny performance to customers across the planet. After dominating the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb in 2022 and shattering the Top Gear Test Track record in 2025, the Spéirling quickly established itself as a symbol of cutting-edge performance excellence, and will soon be experienced by customers. In addition to its hypercar production, McMurtry’s applied technology division, McMurtry Technology, is poised to deliver its incredible battery technology and Downforce on Demand™ to automotive and motorsport OEMs. Thomas Yates, co-founder of McMurtry Automotive, was approached by the late Sir David McMurtry in 2015 to build a car company. It wouldn’t be long after that when prototypes began to showcase McMurtry’s formidable performance potential. “Just ten years ago, there was only a handful of us, with a blank sheet of paper and the ambition to build a car company,” Yates said. “Since then, we've patented revolutionary new technologies, brought together a world-class team of nearly 100 people, and raised the bar for what a performance vehicle can do with the Spéirling. It's been an incredible decade, but the next ten years will be even more exciting.” <- Gallery -> David McMurtry’s engineering career began in the 1970s at Rolls-Royce, and rather than cars, he served as the youngest-ever Deputy Chief Engineer working on the Olympus engines that powered the revolutionary Concorde jet. In order to measure tiny fuel pipes with incredible precision, McMurtry invented a tool: the touch-trigger probe. The tool is used by manufacturers to this day, and decades later, McMurtry convinced Yates to join him and Kevin Ukoko-Rongione to create McMurtry Automotive in 2015. Then, in 2016, the McMurtry D01 prototype was made, with a minuscule weight, 400 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a bespoke carbon fiber chassis. While the D01 was an incredible driver’s car, it wasn’t commercially viable. A new mission was laid out for the team: to create a hypercar that could outperform an F1 race car. McMurtry’s idea of how to achieve that: “suck it to the ground!" Inspired by the Chaparral 2J Can-Am race car, which uses fans at the rear to “suck” the car onto the track, and the Brabham BT46B Formula 1 car that did the same, McMurtry brought the radical idea of the fan car into the 21st century with the Spéirling prototype, which debuted in 2021. Once it was revealed, the prototype went on to dominate virtually every challenge it embarked on, even driving upside down thanks to its fan technology. A decade into its history, the production-spec Spéirling PURE has emerged, and McMurtry is only beginning its reign over the world of automotive high performance.
