McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Polestar 4 Uses Google Maps AI-Powered Live Lane Guidance

Polestar partners with Google to evolve navigation. Long gone are the days of unfolding maps and tracing tiny paths with your finger to get to your destination. It’s hard to even remember those times, with navigation technology available now for cars that will not only guide you along your route, but will also account for traffic, let you know about hazards on the road, and even tell you what lane to be in. In the case of electric vehicles, navigation apps even account for charging when planning routes, and augmented reality features can show drivers exactly where to turn. Polestar, the rapidly growing Swedish luxury electric vehicle manufacturer, is partnering with Google to take navigation technology to an even higher level, with Polestar being the first manufacturer to integrate live lane guidance from Google Maps in the driver display of its new SUV coupe model, the Polestar 4. With visual reminders on the Polestar 4’s 10.2-inch display, as well as audio reminders, drivers will be instructed on when to change lanes in real time, with Google’s advanced AI analyzing the road to help make the call. The feature will initially be available for Polestar 4 cars in the United States and Sweden, but Polestar and Google, who have been partners in EV technology innovation since 2020, plan to launch the feature to more regions, road types, and customers in the future. Polestar 5 Debuts at IAA 2025 as Scandinavian Brand’s Sle...

If you think EVs have gotten far too predictable these days, the new Polestar 5 wants to prove otherwise. Here comes a four-door all-electric grand tourer that began life as the Precept concept back in 2020 and has now made the leap to production, and thankfully, not much has been lost in translation. Debuting at the ongoing IAA 2025 in Munich, Polestar has also announced pricing, which starts at €119,900 (about $129,000) for the Dual Motor version and €142,900 (about $154,000) for the Performance model. At those levels, Polestar is taking on models like Porsche’s Taycan, Audi’s e-tron GT, and even the Tesla Model S Plaid. The question is, does it deliver enough to justify the price? But here’s what makes this moment significant: we finally have something that the Polestar name truly stands for. For those who remember, long before Polestar became its own brand, it was Volvo’s in-house performance division, similar to what AMG is to Mercedes. Both Polestar and Volvo now sit under China’s Geely Automotive, much like Genesis operates independently from Hyundai. After the split, Polestar gave us the gorgeous but short-lived hybrid coupe Polestar 1, before moving on to EV crossovers with the Polestar 2, 3, and 4. While those models built credibility for the Swedish brand with strong sales figures, the 5 is the first car that appears like a proper flagship, positioned to go head-to-head with established electric performance sedans from both Europe and America. On paper, the specs are impressive. The aforementioned Performance model produces 871 horsepower and 749 pound-feet of torque and can hit 60 mph in about 3.2 seconds and tops out at 155 mph. The Dual Motor version is not far behind, with 738 horsepower, 599 pound-feet of torque, with the dash to 60 mph happening in 3.9 seconds. Both versions ride on an 800-volt architecture, meaning they can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes at a 350-kilowatt DC fast charger. The 112 kWh battery pack (106 kWh usable), besides being a substantial one, is also structural. Range is competitive, with Polestar estimating around 416 miles for the Dual Motor and 351 miles for the Performance under the European WLTP cycle. Expect EPA numbers to be lower, but even if they land closer to 375 and 320 miles, still be healthy numbers for long-distance driving. Polestar engineered the pack to reinforce the car’s bonded aluminum chassis, reducing weight while boosting rigidity. That platform, known as the Polestar Performance Architecture, is a major talking point because Polestar claims that it is lighter than steel and delivers torsional rigidity higher than many two-seat supercars. But just to give you some context about Polestar’s EV performance, recently, Polestar made headlines when it set a new Guinness World Record for the longest Electric SUV Trip on a single charge, where a Polestar 3 covered 438 miles on a single charge. Coming back to the Polestar 5, the suspension and braking hardware also convey the target audience and intent of this fastback EV, with the front using a compact double wishbone design, paired with Brembo four-piston calipers and lightweight 400 mm discs. The Performance model adds MagneRide adaptive dampers that can adjust 1,000 times per second. But by far, the styling is the highlight of the Polestar 5. Its sharp lines and the availibility of six colors, including two matte finishes, truly exude that Scandinavian design aesthetic. Upfront, you have Polestar’s signature dual blade headlight signature, complete with Pixel LED tech as standard. The car stretches more than 16 feet long yet sits only 55 inches tall, giving this low-slung four-door coupe the ideal proportions of a proper GT. Aerodynamic efficiency was key here: a virtual rear window and digital mirror setup (first seen on the Polestar 4) help deliver a drag coefficient of just 0.24. A two-meter panoramic roof, frameless glass, and aero-efficient lighting round out the look. Step inside, and the minimalist theme continues with an increased focus on sustainability, because Polestar employs eco-friendly materials like flax-based composites called ampliTex, NFPP bio-based plastics, Econyl recycled carpets, and PET-based fabrics in the cabin. Unlike rivals that hide eco-materials under traditional finishes, Polestar leans into them, letting textures show through as part of the design. Add in Recaro-developed seats with heating, ventilation, and massage, and the cabin appears to be both progressive and genuinely comfortable. As for tech, you get a 14.5-inch portrait-style center screen running Android Automotive with Google built in, a partnership that has been in place from the very early days of the Polestar brand. What that means for you is native Google Maps, Assistant, and Play Store support, without needing to connect your phone. If you’re an audiophile, Bowers & Wilkins offers a high-end 21-speaker system with 1,680 watts. Safety and driver assistance are just as comprehensive, with 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, radar, and a driver monitoring camera. The SmartZone sensor suite is lidar-ready, which means the car is also future-proofed for advanced driver-assistance upgrades. If you are indeed shopping in this space, the Polestar 5 offers something interesting: a European-designed EV GT that prioritizes sustainable materials without sacrificing power. However, there’s a catch for U.S. buyers: it isn’t coming stateside at launch. As the Polestar 5 is built in Chongqing, China, the car would face import tariffs of more than 100 percent, making it economically impractical to sell here for now. While the brand has previously showcased a pre-production version of the Polestar 5 in Los Angeles, it says North American availability will be announced at a later date. Until uncertainty around trade deals settles, American buyers will have to wait it out. Polestar Reports 56% Revenue Growth In H1 2025

Polestar’s burgeoning EV lineup is driving increasing revenue. A few years ago, Polestar set an ambitious goal: five new EV models in as many years. Now, most of the way through that time, the Polestar 5 and 6 models are waiting in the wings, and the Polestar 2 has been extensively updated to sit alongside the Polestar 3 SUV and the Polestar 4 SUV coupe. With a strong and continuously growing lineup of vehicles that combine cutting-edge EV technology with luxurious features, compelling performance, and decidedly Scandinavian design, Polestar is on a continuous path of growth. In the first half of 2025, Polestar saw its revenue grow by an impressive 56 percent. This is thanks to retail sales volumes growing by 51 percent amidst the expansion of its retail network and its growing lineup of electric luxury cars. If you think all-electric SUVs can’t stretch far enough, the Polestar 3 Long-range Single Motor variant has just proved otherwise. Over in the U.K., an unmodified, production-spec model covered 935.44 km (581.3 miles) on a single charge. That is an impressive 33 percent more than the rated WLTP range of 706 km (438 miles) on the European cycle. This epic run across the Pond has earned it a Guinness World Records official title, and for some context, imagine driving from Los Angeles to San Diego and back, with range to spare. Let’s break down how it managed that. The run lasted 22 hours and 57 minutes, with three professional efficiency drivers, Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker, and Richard Parker, taking turns at the wheel, rotating every three hours to stay alert. They drove through mixed weather conditions, including rain, and the electric SUV averaged 12.1 kWh per 100 km (19.5 kWh per 100 miles). By the time the odometer hit its WLTP-rated 438 miles, the battery still showed 20 percent remaining. Even after reaching 0 percent, the SUV managed to squeeze out another 12.8 km (8 miles). “We are very proud to say we have a world record holder in the Polestar family! This official Guinness World Record for range is another proof point that Polestar 3 is setting new standards. A Guinness judge, Paulina Sapinska, oversaw GPS logs, battery state, odometer readings, and video data through Webfleet. The SUV was equipped with standard 20-inch wheels with original Michelin Sport 4 EV tires. So how does that stack up against previous records? Well, Polestar’s record doesn’t beat that top EV car range. That honor goes to the Lucid Air Grand Touring. Earlier this year, in July, it set a Guinness World Record for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge, which is 749 miles. The Polestar 3, though, holds the title specifically for an electric SUV, with no modifications. As for the overall longest EV distance on a single charge, regardless of type? The Guinness top spot goes to a student-built prototype. The TUfast Eco Team from Germany drove their specially engineered electric vehicle, muc022, an academic prototype, for 2,573.79 km (1,599.3 miles) on a single non-solar-powered charge in September 2023. That’s not relevant to your typical EV ownership, but it shows how far the envelope can be pushed when teams optimize efficiency above all else. So what does all this mean for you and your range expectations? First, if you drive a large EV, this record shows just how far modern batteries and systems can stretch in real-world conditions. Ambient temperatures in particular have an impact on range, and earlier this year, the Polestar 3 won the EI Prix 2025 Range Test. Second, even in less extreme scenarios like long road trips, a combination of careful speed choices, efficient driving habits, and optimal route planning can considerably extend your range. And yes, half-a-thousand or more miles between charges is closer than ever to a practical reality. Polestar Reports 51% Sales Growth In H1 2025

Polestar continues to grow in 2025. The second quarter and first half of the year are over, and Polestar, a young and emerging manufacturer of high-tech luxury electric vehicles, has reported its financial results for the period, showing growth and success, not only in the past quarter, but even more prominently in the first half of the year, with more models soon to be announced and a rapidly expanding brand in the highly competitive market of luxury electric vehicles. Delivering a total of 18,049 in the second quarter of 2025, the quarterly number represents an increase of 38 percent compared to the same quarter last year. With the first quarter of the year over, Polestar continues to grow. Setting out to change the landscape of the luxury electric vehicle market, Polestar promised to launch five new models in as many years. Thus far, the manufacturer is well underway towards delivering on that promise, with the Polestar 1 coupe being succeeded by the Polestar 2, an electric sedan, the Polestar 3, an SUV, and the Polestar 4, an SUV coupe, all of which combine innovative and futuristic electric engineering with luxurious craftsmanship and an unmistakably Scandinavian sense of sharp, modern design. Obviously, the battery is crucial to the reliability and longevity of an electric vehicle, and concerns about the battery health over time, like the battery on a laptop or smartphone, give buyers justified pause when it comes to purchasing any electric vehicle secondhand, including Polestar 2 examples. Now, Polestar is announcing a solution to that problem and giving pre-owned EV buyers peace of mind when it comes to the Polestar 2, by offering certificates for the battery health of pre-owned luxury cars. Through a new Polestar pre-owned program, examples of the Polestar 2 that are listed for sale are selected to re-enter Polestar’s network as certified used EVs, and that certification only comes after a rigorous 112-point inspection. Cars that are certified get the remainder of their 8-year battery warranty, and a 24-month warranty. However, beyond that, Polestar is now introducing battery state-of-health, or BSOH certificates that transparently display the battery health of pre-owned examples. This initiative, aiming to extend the life of EVs as years pass, works in conjunction with Polestar’s over-the-air updates that are available for the Polestar 2, keeping the model as current and advanced as possible as the years go on. Polestar 3 Wins The El Prix 2025 Winter Range Test

Polestar shows off impressive electric range in challenging winter conditions. Being a Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer, Polestar’s home is surrounded by the wintry conditions of northern climates, which can prove a daunting challenge for all vehicles, but especially battery-electric vehicles. However, the El Prix 2025 range test is the world’s largest independent winter range test, comparing competitors in challenging Norwegian winter conditions to see how their range estimates compare to reality in tough conditions. The test was a major success for Polestar, as the Long Range Dual Motor Polestar 3 won the range test, besting 23 competitors with its 330-mile range, within a mere five percent of its WTLP-estimated 349-mile range. The result from the Polestar 3 was the second-best result ever achieved at the El Prix winter range test. The El Prix is organized by the Norwegian Automobile Federation and Motor Magazine twice yearly, and each annual winter edition of the test provides the added challenge of cold weather and low-traction terrain. Despite the Polestar 3 dominating the event, a new variant of the luxury electric SUV, the Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor promises even greater driving range, with a WLTP estimate of 439 miles.
