Let’s face it, the dream job for any car enthusiast or motorsport fan is becoming a professional racing driver,  traveling the world, competing wheel-to-wheel on some of the most challenging tracks, and spending office hours behind the wheel at triple-digit speeds. And while that dream may only come true for a small percentage of people, Porsche prides itself on delivering the experience of professional racing through its customer motorsport program. Adding to an already impressive lineup of cars that compete at the highest levels of racing, including IMSA, WEC, and DTM, Porsche just revealed the all-new 911 GT4 R, the first car designed for global GT4 racing and based on the 911.Having just been announced and put on stage for its global debut, the Porsche 911 GT4 R already has its sights on competing in some serious races, including IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and SRO Pirelli GT4 America championships. The foundation of the car is largely based on the current 911 Cup spec, which derives from the road-legal 911 GT3 (992.2), an entirely new departure from the previous Clubsport models based on the 718 Cayman. And with all that change comes a more powerful engine, wider front and rear widths, and more sophisticated motorsport tech, all for the sake of more stability and faster lap times. Power comes courtesy of the same high-revving 4.0L naturally-aspirated six-cylinder from the road-going 911 GT3, sending up to 515 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. All that momentum is managed through a sequential six-speed dog-gearbox controlled by paddle shifters and a four-disc racing clutch. And as regulations for the GT4 class remain strict to keep a level playing field, the new 911 GT4 R chassis differs from the 911 Cup in a few ways, such as the wheels being an inch narrower than the 911 Cup, and using a five-bolt mounting pattern instead of a centerlock setup. Inside, Porsche is strictly business with the 911 GT4 R’s cockpit. Wrapped in a factory-finished roll cage and strapped into a one-piece carbon bucket Recaro, the driver receives all information through a 10.3-inch display set behind the carbon motorsport wheel. The tech side of things includes an integrated data logger and a sophisticated GPS System to run analysis while racing, giving the support team everything they need to optimize performance for long races.

The new 911 GT4 R continues the success story of Porsche’s GT4 in customer racing. Since entering the GT4 class in 2016, Porsche has developed and built more than 1,500 racing cars based on the Cayman.
