McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Recaps The 2025 Air|Water Event

The third Air|Water event was a major success. Luftgekühlt is an iconic Porsche event, showcasing the cherished vintage air-cooled models from the historic brand in a grand display full of automotive excellence and peak car culture. However, its newer companion, Air|Water, is the brainchild of Luftgekühlt’s founder, Patrick Long, and its creative director, Jeff Zwart, and unlike Luftgekühlt, it broadens the scope to include both air-cooled and water-cooled Porsche models. The third iteration of Air|Water just took place, bringing thousands of Porsche enthusiasts from across the country and beyond to Southern California for the fastest-growing Porsche festival. While Luftgekhühlt moves around, the Air|Water event has returned to Costa Mesa, California, and its fixed venue promotes the idea of turning Air|Water into an annual event. This year, over 1,000 cars were displayed at the OC Fair & Event Center, ranging from owner-driven cars to a specially curated selection of special vehicles. One of the most interesting arrivals was, in fact, not a Porsche, but a McLaren MP4/2B, one with which Alain Prost drove to overall victory in the 1985 Formula 1 season. Hans Mezger, Porsche’s legendary master engine builder, designed the retro F1 winner’s engine. Other stars were a Rothmans-Porsche 911 SC/RS that won the Middle East Rally Championship in 1984 and 1985, a street-legal Schuppan 962 CR, and the 911 GT3-RSR that Patrick Long raced himself in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans with Flying Lizard Motorsports. The event also featured themed displays, including one about the legacy of mid-engine Porsches and one about the front-engined 944. A unique attraction at the festival was the “Carrera Carnival,” where visitors could ride around a handling circuit in Porsches driven by professional drivers. The Air|Water event caters both to seasoned Porsche fans and owners, and to non-owners who want to gain an immersive experience of the brand’s rich heritage and history. With lifestyle items, artwork, and aftermarket accessories as part of the display, the inclusivity and rich culture seen in Air|Water will hopefully blossom into a regular event for Porsche fans of all kinds. Porsche Teases A Hypercar As It Celebrates 50 Years Of Th...

Porsche is one of just a handful of brands that has a strong lineage of both race cars and road cars in equal measure. Come April 28th, Porsche will celebrate another milestone. On April 28, 1975, a Porsche 917K that had dominated Le Mans just a few years prior rolled out of the development center in Weissach, heading not towards a racetrack but bound for Paris instead. Italian count Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, a passionate Porsche customer, wanted the impossible: a road-going 917. At his request, Chassis 30 was modified for street use, picking up additional mirrors, a horn, turn signals, exhaust mufflers, and a spare tire. Inside, the seats were trimmed in tan leather from Hermès, with suede on the dashboard, doors, and roof, reminiscent of the 1970s. The car also retained its original wooden shift knob. Whereas racing 917s featured iconic Gulf Racing or Salzburg liveries, chassis 30 was refinished in Martini silver. An Alabama license plate sealed its identity. Now, 50 years later, Porsche seems ready to tap into that spirit once again, as the German automaker " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> From the profile, it appears to be a street-legal version of the 963 race car. Set for a June 2025 debut, it coincides with this year's 2024 Hours of Le Mans. Could this be Porsche’s next flagship hypercar, i.e., the successor to the 918 Spyder and potential rival to the McLaren W1 and Ferrari F80? The abandoned 919 Street and electric Mission X, once seen as a possibility, appear to be less likely amid a broader slowdown in the EV market. A 963-derived hypercar, blending Porsche’s latest endurance racing tech with real-world usability, could be the perfect answer to a new-age ‘Holy Trinity’. The connection with the past runs deep. Packing a flat-12 engine developed by the legendary Hans Mezger, it was the 917K that gave Porsche its first Le Mans victory back in 1970 at the hands of Richard Attwood and Hans Hermann. That win didn’t just put Porsche on the map but also made it the brand it is today, and that motorsport legacy continues to this day with the 963 race car. As Count Rossi’s Martini Silver 917k continues to take on the street in the South of France, a new generation of Porsche drivers may soon be able to experience something similar in a new-age hypercar come June. Porsche Design just dropped a serious watch for vintage lovers and Porsche purists, the Chronograph 911 Spirit 70. Created exclusively for owners of the new Porsche 911 Spirit 70, this watch revives the glitter, groove, and glam of the 1970s with attention to detail. The dial features a Black Pascha pattern, phosphor green accents borrowed from heritage rev counters, and Super-LumiNova touches for that perfect nighttime glow. Even the gold-colored Porsche Design logo and “911 Spirit 70 LIMITED SERIES” text mirror the trim on the actual car, making it a wearable piece of collector car culture. Designed and crafted in Porsche’s Swiss watchmaking facility, the chronograph focuses on performance and exclusivity. It sports a lightweight titanium case with a stealthy black titanium carbide finish, even extending to the pushers and screw-down crown. The Porsche Design Caliber WERK 01.100 movement is COSC-certified and runs under a rotor that mimics the car’s Bronzite-finished wheel. The case back features the same limited-edition number as the car, and a double-sided sapphire crystal guarantees you can admire the movement in perfect clarity. Porsche Unveils New 1-of-1,500 911 Spirit 70

Porsche revives the spirit of the disco heyday. The Porsche 911 has been one of the world’s most iconic and legendary supercars for over six decades, being introduced in the 1960s, and remaining one of the dominant forces in the luxury performance car world today. However, one of the most exciting eras for the Porsche 911 was the 1970s. The decade itself, and especially its cultural phenomenon of disco, was also one of the most exciting in the past. As the third installment in a series of Heritage Design models that look back on the car’s rich past, Porsche has revealed the new Porsche 911 Spirit 70, a limited-edition 911 that revives the spirit of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Following the Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition and the 911 Sport Classic, only 1,500 examples of the new Porsche 911 Spirit 70 will be made, and it will use the new 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet with rear-wheel drive as its basis, importantly featuring the new GTS’s T-Hybrid powertrain, which makes it the first roadgoing Porsche 911 with a hybrid powertrain, with 532 horsepower and 449 lb/ft of torque. The car is launched with a new exclusive color, Olive Neo, and features retro-inspired features like Sport Classic wheels, Bronzite accents, and stripe graphics that incorporate elongated “911” lettering. Inside, the design is also full of vintage-inspired charm. While the Heritage Design Edition used corduroy, and the Sport Classic used the iconic Pepita houndstooth fabric, the new Spirit 70 makes use of Pasha, with a warped checkered pattern made of textile and flock yarn for comfort and a sporty feel. Like many ultra-exclusive limited-edition Porsche models, the new 911 Spirit 70 will be offered with an exclusive watch from Porsche Design. The car is set to arrive at United States Porsche dealerships in late summer with an MSRP matching its exclusivity at $240,000, which excludes $2,250 for delivery, processing, and handling. When it comes to purist track performance, the Porsche 911 GT3 dominates. The Porsche 911 GT3 is not only one of the most intensely performance-oriented variants of one of the world’s favorite sports cars, but it’s also one of the final bastions of a performance car formula that has long been cherished by enthusiasts: combining the power of a naturally aspirated engine with the visceral feeling of rear-wheel drive, and the unmatched joy of a manual transmission. With a track-focused design, the 911 GT3 is one of the most desirable and celebrated performance cars on the market, and after being updated, the new Porsche 911 GT3 is continuing to build its legacy as a piece of traditional automotive excellence, by setting an incredible new record at one of the world’s most challenging and respected race courses: the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Used as a measuring stick of the abilities of manufacturers, engineers, cars and drivers alike, setting a record-breaking lap time on the Nordschleife is an admirable, revered feat for any car to achieve, and the new Porsche 911 GT3 with a manual transmission, driven by Joerg Bergmeister did that by completing the near-13-mile lap in 6:56.294. That time made the Porsche 911 GT3 the fastest production car with a manual transmission to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife, shattering the previous record by an impressive margin of nearly ten seconds. In addition, the lap time was also faster than the previous 992.1-generation 911 GT3 with the PDK transmision by almost four seconds. While the new record certainly demonstrates the incredible performance of the new 911 GT3 with the manual transmission, it also makes a case for the preservation of the dying breed of manual transmission sports cars. With more 911 GT3 customers than ever opting for a manual transmission, the new lap record proves that performance excellence and purist tradition can be combined with Porsche’s engineering know-how. During the 2025 racing season, the Porsche 911 GT3 R is continuing to build its revered legacy as a racing hero with the victories it is earning, like a recent one in the GTD class at the Long Beach Grand Prix this past weekend. However, its successor is already gearing up to make a debut, opening a new chapter in Porsche’s celebrated racing legacy. The development of the new Porsche 911 GT3 R customer racing car is about to reach an important milestone, with an endurance test set to take place at one of the world’s most iconic race tracks: the Circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Held in collaboration with Herberth Motorsport, the test car will be driven by Laurin Heinrich, Ralf Bohn, and Alfred Renauer. The test car will, in fact, sport the number 91 and take part in a competitive race as part of the Creventic 24h Series. The improvements seen in the upcoming 911 GT3 R focus on driveability, including tweaks in the aerodynamics to reduce pitch sensitivity, and software updates to improve the steering behavior. Porsche Celebrates One-Two Finish At Long Beach

Porsche leaves Long Beach with a big victory. The endurance racing world is full of daunting challenges that put cars, drivers, and teams to the test, and many of those races have earned icon status as staples on the racing calendar. One of those is the Long Beach Grand Prix, which just took place as the third round of this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and Porsche earned an immense victory at the iconic sprint race. Porsche Penske Motorsports two Porsche 963 endurance racing hypercars secured a one-two finish at the race. The number 7 car, driven by Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy finished in first place, while the number 6 car, driven by Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet, won second place. However, that wasn’t the only victory that Porsche is celebrating after the 2025 Long Beach Grand Prix. AO Racing, a customer team with a Porsche 911 GT3 R in the GTD class, won the class. The incredible victory at this year’s Long Beach Grand Prix marks Porsche’s third straight victory in the championship, and its second one-two finish since its amazing victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring. With one of the most passionate and devoted communities of owners and enthusiasts, Porsche seems to be always on the rise, thanks to its diverse lineup of sports cars and SUVs. Whether it's the weekend track warrior with a 911 GT3 RS or the conscious commuter behind the wheel of the new electric Macan, Porsche people are pleased with their ownership experience. Porsche is off to a red-hot start in 2025, reporting a record-breaking first quarter with 18,884 new vehicle deliveries in the United States. That's a huge 40.6% jump from Q1 2024 and an 8.1% gain over the previous Q1 record in 2023. The sales surge highlights a strong demand across Porsche's entire lineup, fueled partly by the fix of supply chain issues that impacted last year's production. Porsche's U.S. CEO, Timo Resch, credits the brand's growth to customer excitement for new models and the continued support from Porsche dealers nationwide. The Porsche Macan continues to lead the charge, moving 7,486 units this quarter alone. Even more impressive is that 44.6% of those were the new all-electric Macan, showing that Porsche EV sales are gaining serious traction. Electric vehicles now make up 23% of Porsche's total Q1 U.S. sales, thanks to interest in the Macan Electric and 1,019 Taycan deliveries. Meanwhile, traditional two-door favorites like the 911 and 718 also posted strong gains, selling 2,086 and 1,476 units. The Cayenne and Panamera models added solid volume, with 5,331 and 1,486 vehicles sold. Certified Pre-Owned Porsche sales also saw a healthy increase, with 11,587 vehicles sold in Q1 2025, up 11.7% year-over-year. With new models and longtime nameplates like the 911 still turning heads, Porsche seems well-positioned to maintain its sales momentum through the year.
