McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Boxster History and Design In this article, we will have a look at the history and different designs of this iconic mid-engine two-seater classic. We will explore the design of the various generations that have been introduced since the 1996 1st generation until the present day 4th generation Porsche Boxster for sale. PORSCHE BOXSTER 986 : First Generation (1996 - 2004) Porsche introduced the Porsche 986 in late 1996. Since the 550 Spyder in the early 1950's Porsche had not built a car that could be designated as a roadster. Porsche Boxster S Special Edition 986/ 550 Spyder Boxster S Special EditionIn 2004, the manufacturer introduced the Porsche Boxster S Special Edition 986, also known as the 550 Spyder Boxster S Special Edition. As a salute to the original 1950s 550 Spyder, these were built with a limited production of only 1953 cars. The 550 Spyders were all painted in GT Silver Metallic. Top Speed 160 mph Boxster / Cayman 987: Second Generation (2005 - 2012) Boxster/Cayman 987The 2nd generation of the Porsche Boxster was revealed at the Paris Motor show in 2004. The car went on sale in 2005 together with the new Cayman fastback coupé. Both cars shared many of the same components. Although the Boxster was the second version of the original 1996 986 version, it remained broadly similar. The most significant changes being the broader wheel arches to accommodate 19-inch wheels and the headlights, which were now identical to the Carrera GT, the Porsche flagship car. The Porsche Boxster and Cayman's basic engine was the 2.7 liters 236 HP flat 6, while the S version got the 3.2 liters 279 HP engine. Porsche Cayman 987The Porsche Cayman fastback coupé was released in July 2006, a full year after the release of the high-performance version of the same car. The Cayman shared the same mid-engined platform and body components as the Porsche Boxster 987. Because of the roof, the Cayman has a much stiffer chassis, which results in better behavior on the road. Performance-wise the Cayman has a broadly similar performance as the Boxster S, as they shared the same 2.7 liters 236 HP flat-six engine.Porsche Cayman R 987The Cayman R was introduced in 2011 based on the 2009 Cayman S. With 19-inch wheels lightweight wheels, the Porsche aero kit, bucket seats with carbon fiber backing, and the removal of all modern comforts like radio, air-conditioning, and door handles. The Cayman R was a lightweight racer. With that came as well some cosmetic changes like black-painted wheels and mirrors. The base model Porsche Boxster was now fitted with a new 2.7-liter flat-6 engine, which produced 260HP. While the Porsche Boxster S came standard with the existing 3.4-liter engine; however, Porsche had tweaked the performance to produce 310 HP. Both cars were delivered with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission came as an option. In the interior, Porsche used many parts from its higher-level models like the Carrera and Panamera, which caused the Porsche Boxster to have a beautiful interior. Boxster GTSLaunched in March 2014 to compliment the Porsche Boxster series. The Boxster GTS was designed to be the most potent and sporty of the Boxster series. The car was fitted with the same 3.4-liter engine as the Boxster S, but it produced 15HP more. The vehicle also featured some design changes with different front and rear bumpers. Porsche delivered the car to be the ultimate driving machine, with the additions of the Porsche active suspension system, 20 Inch wheels, and the Sports Chrono Pack as standard. Boxster SpyderThe Porsche Boxster Spyder was unveiled at the New York Motor Show in April 2015. Although the styling is similar to the previous 2nd generation car, the new Spyder also shares its styling with the Cayman GT4. As the lightest in the Boxster series line up, the car had some serious performance. Fitted with the largest and most powerful engine used in the series, a 3.8-liter flat-6, the car produced a staggering 385 HP. This helped bring the vehicle to a 180 mph top speed. Only 2400 cars were built of the Boxster Spyder, of which 850 were exported to the United States. Porsche Cayman 981Porsche unveiled the 2nd generation Cayman at the 2012 Geneva motor show and made available as a 2014 production car in Spring 2013. Launched with a choice of engines, the 2.7-liter flat-6 for the standard Cayman, and the 3.4 liters for the S version, both engines were available with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a twin-clutch 7-speed manual PDK transmission.The 981 was a considerable upgrade visually, as the car was fitted with a newly designed body, a longer wheelbase, and wider front end. Due to its characteristics, the Cayman was voted one of the best driving sports cars by various motor press. Porsche Engineers Explain 718 Series GTS Cayman & Boxster Cayman GTS 981With a lower ride height, a longer body and body kit, 20-inch wheels, and a sports exhaust system, Porsche shows what it can do to produce a properly fast and pure sports car. Introduced in 2014, the Cayman GTS was based on the 981 platform, but underneath was a seriously different car. The top speed of the GTS had gone up to 177 mph with the manual transmission and 179 mph with the PDK transmission. The sports plus mode pushes the car to a 4.5 second 0-62mph time. Cayman GT4 981In 2015 Porsche decided to launch a track car. It came out with the Cayman GT4, a high-performance car with a 3.8-liter engine from the 911 Carrera S that propels the car to 183mph. With provisions for a Club sports pack, which includes a half roll cage, battery cut off switch, fire extinguisher, and six-point racing harness, this car is a real track day racing car. The Cayman GT4 did the Nordschleife on the Nürburgring in a time of 7 minutes and 40 seconds. The Cayman R 1st generation took more than 26 seconds longer. Cayman GT4 Clubsport 981In October 2015, Porsche released the ultimate racing Cayman. The GT4 Clubsport 981 was born. Powered by the same 3.8-liter engine that can be found on the production version of the GT4, the Clubsport was fitted with a variation of racing additions like an FIA approved roll cage and racing bucket seats. With the switch to a turbocharged new four-cylinder engine, Porsche enters a new era for the Boxster/Cayman combination. The 2.5- liter engine on the S version made Porsche change the marketing name for the 982 to the 718. This in reference to the Porsche 718 that won the Targa Florio race in 1959 and 1960 to much larger engine cars. The engine is directly derived from the 911's six-cylinder engine and manages to go to an unbelievable 7500 revs. 718 Boxster 982Although the styling and design of the 4th generation Boxster are broadly the same as the 3rd generation cars, the most apparent changes are In the headlights and bumpers. The changes are really below the engine cover, where the four-cylinder engine manages to churn out 296 HP and reach a top speed of 171 mph. 718 Cayman 982The Porsche 982 Series cars handling and throttle response are surprisingly good for a four-cylinder vehicle, even more so the handling as Porsche has fitted the Cayman with a stiff and sporty suspension, which makes drivers feel every move they make on the road. The performance is roughly the same for the Cayman as it is for the Boxster with 296 HP and a top speed of 171mph. 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and Caymans Get Upgraded 718 Cayman GT4 982With a top speed of 189 mph, the GT4 has earned its place in the fastest segment of Porsche cars. Powered by a 4.0-liter flat-6 engine, which gives 414 HP, there is certainly no lack of power. The significant changes from the 3rd generation feature a more aggressive bodywork, lower stance, new diffuser, and larger intakes. Porsche has also fitted several components from the GT3 911 like the front suspension and brakes while the dampers, ABS, and stability control come from the GT3 911 RS. 718 Spyder 982The Spyder 982 is a continuation from Porsche to share the styling of the Spyder with the GT4. With the double hump engine cover and sporty looks, this is a perfect looking car. 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport 982Porsche released two varieties of the Clubsport in 2019. 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and Caymans Get Upgraded

For the upcoming 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models, there will be a bunch of upgraded standard features included. The standard 718 Boxster and Cayman models, as well as the T, S and GTS 4.0 variants, will have the following as standard: automatic two-zone climate control, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay, bi-xenon headlights and auto-dimming mirrors. One option that should be mentioned is the option to replace the standard six-speed manual transmission with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Heel-toe shifting is becoming a lost art. This is how our grandparents had to drive, using your right foot to brake and your toes to blip the gas pedal. Gradually, American cars adopted heavy flywheels that eliminated the shuffle at the expense of double-clutching instead. Only the world's best drivers can execute both methods in a twinkling of an eye, so watch Mark Webber hot lap the new 718 GTS 4.0 at Estoril. While many people hoped the 4.0L would be the same 500 horsepower monster from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS for sale, that one wouldn't fit. So engineers used the architecture of the 718 Series flat-four and added a pair of cylinders. This mid-engined monster offers 400 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual. Porsche Unveils 718 Series GTS 4.0 Boxster & Cayman

This has only happened a few times in automotive history. A brilliant engineer gets the urge to stuff their largest engine into their smallest car. Zora Duntov did it with the Corvette, and Carroll Shelby did it with the Cobra. Now Stuttgart has joined the club, as Porsche has unveiled the 718 Series GTS 4.0 Boxster & Cayman. Downstairs lurks a new Porsche 911 GT3 RS for sale. It is powered by the same 4.0L monster. This masterpiece of German precision sends 520 horsepower and 346 horsepower to the wheels at almost any rpm. The notion of this much power in a mid-mounted chassis is maniacal, so Porsche's press release mentions the engine is de-tuned to 400 metric horsepower and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T Announced

The new 2020 Porsche 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T models have been announced as sports cars that were purpose-built for driving enthusiasts. Porsche equipped these models with a few enhancements that make these cars a pleasure to drive with a little more gusto. This includes the PASM Sport Suspension (optional for the 718 S and GTS models), limited slip differential, Sport Chrono and Porsche Torque Vectoring. Providing the power to make the driving happen is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. For the models' looks, Porsche has equipped them with 20-inch 911 Carrera S wheels (standard) that are painted in Titanium Grey. The exterior also features mirror covers and model badging in Agate Grey, while the tips of the Sport Exhaust System are in high-gloss black. Inside both models are Sport Seats Plus, but Full Bucket Seats are offered as options. Porsche is also offering an optional 718 T Interior Package that includes upgrades to the interior and contrasting stitching in either Guards Red, GT Silver or Lizard Green. The 2020 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T are available for order now and will be landing in dealers in summer 2020. Pricing is as follows: $66,400 for the 718 Cayman T and $68,500 for the 718 Boxster T. Neither of these prices includes the $1,350 delivery, processing and handling fee. Fans participating in the "Sportscar Together Day" event at Hockenheimring were treated to the unveiling the 718 Cayman GT4 Sports Cup Edition. This new special edition Cayman was designed specifically for the German market. The design you see on it was created through a partnership between Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. It will be available in two exterior colors, Black and White. Each comes with red highlights and a massive rear wing help up by Guards Red supports. There are also 20-inch black wheels equipped. Inside the special edition Cayman is a black leather/Alcantara with red highlights. 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder Unveiled

Just when you thought the GT4 was destined for the history books, they are back with a vengeance. In a press release last night, our perceptions of the current-generation Boxster and Cayman were blown away. That is because the 2020 Porsche 718 Series GT4 was unveiled with six-cylinder power. Until now, the fastest versions were the Cayman S and Boxster S. They used a 2.5L turbo four to offer 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Those are great numbers, but we yearned for more. So the new cars will arrive with an all-new 4.0L flat six. It would have been easy to borrow the 520 horsepower beast from the 911 GT3 RS, but Porsche decided to bore and stroke the 3.0L engine found in the 911 Carrera. Shift Your Own Gears Bolted to a six-speed manual, it offers 414 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It can rev to 8,000 rpm with smooth & linear power delivery. For the first time, Porsche flat six has the ability to shut down 3 cylinders while cruising. It is also their cleanest engine thanks to new fuel injection mapping. Instead of one pulse, each injector fires 5 times per compression to optimize the burn. For the finer details, the Cayman GT4 offers 50% more downforce or about 26 additional lbs at 124 mph. The chassis has some of the same ball joint suspension mounts as the 911 RS models along with a re-tuned Porsche Active Suspension Management system. An optional Clubsport package includes beefy sway bars, fire extinguisher, and a six-point racing harness. Don't Call It A Boxster! The convertible version of the Cayman GT4 is now known as the 718 Spyder. Inspired by the 550 Spyder, it is the ultimate lightweight roadster. A manual top can be dropped in seconds, and it has a dry weight of 3,130 lbs. It reaches 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and 124 mph in only 13.8 ticks. Does this foretell the end of the Boxster, it is a name that feels stuck in the '90s, so perhaps it is time to say goodbye. Porsche Canada's New Parts Warehouse Test Track

Porsche fans north of the border are enjoying the last grasps of Spring, as Florida is already approaching the high 90's. To make sure Canadian customers have convenient service, Porsche Canada's new parts warehouse test track is a great way to celebrate the new facility. Located at the Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga, it is 175,000 square feet of Porsche parts. Considering they sold 8,904 cars last year, the need for parts and restoration will only grow larger. Shelving and deliveries will arrive in October, so they decided to Christen the building in the best way possible. A 718 Series GTS Boxster and Cayman carved their own racetrack across the concrete slab. You haven't lived until you have mastered the art of indoor drifting, but my coworkers and I would never attempt such antics.
