McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Wins One-Two Victory At 2025 12 Hours Of Sebring

Porsche claims incredible victory at an iconic endurance racing challenge. Each year, the 12 Hours of Sebring brings the world’s premier endurance racing teams, cars, and drivers together to compete in one of the world’s most daunting endurance racing challenges. This year, an incredible group of teams, brands, and cars took to the grid at Sebring this past weekend, but the victor was a specifically iconic and historic one, with Porsche Penske Motorsport scoring an amazing one-two finish at the race. The Number 7 Porsche 963 racing hypercar driven by Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy, and Laurens Vanthoor won the 12 Hours of Sebring after winning the 24 Hours of Daytona in January, while right behind them was the Number 6 car, driven by Matt Campbell, Mathieu Jaminet, and Kévin Estre. The victory came after an epic showdown in the final 31 minutes of the race, and it marked Porsche’s 19th overall victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring, its first since 2008. After earning the “Mr. 24 Hours title by winning the 24-hour races at Spa, Nürburgring, Le Mans, and Daytona, Nick Tandy also becomes one of the few winners of the endurance racing “Triple Crown,” having won the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 24-hour races at Le Mans and Daytona, making him one of the world’s most decorated endurance racing drivers. Customer teams with the Porsche 963 also finished sixth and eighth at the race, while the “Rexy” Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by Laurin Heinrich, Klaus Bachler, and Alessio Picariello finished on top of the GTD Pro class, marking the first victory in one of the major endurance races of the IMSA series for the AO Racing team. Porsche’s 2024 Results Show Strength In Tough Times

Porsche managed to pull off some impressive 2024 results despite some harsh global conditions. The brand hit record sales in four out of five major regions, delivering 310,718 vehicles to customers worldwide. The Cayenne topped the charts as the best-seller, followed by the Macan and the ever-popular 911. Porsche kept things fresh by updating five of its six main model lines, including the fully electric Macan and an improved Cayenne. With a mix of combustion engines, hybrids, and electric options, Porsche kept plenty of choices on the table for all types of drivers. For passionate purists and collectors, Porsche teased new 911 variants, including a cool heritage-inspired edition that nods to the 1970s. Porsche also revealed plans for a new SUV model with combustion and hybrid options, which are set to arrive later in the decade. Porsche leaned on strategic cost moves and its "Road to 20" performance plan to stay on track financially. Despite economic challenges and supply chain issues, they still turned a group operating profit of $6.07 billion and maintained a strong automotive net cash flow of $4.01 billion. Customization proved to be a big win, with more customers opting for Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur options to personalize their rides. Looking ahead, Porsche plans to invest $800 million in 2025 to push forward with new models, battery development, and software upgrades. On the motorsport front, Porsche had a big year, securing wins in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA racing series. Rare Race-Ready 1-of-77 2019 Porsche 935 For Sale

A chance to own a piece of Porsche history. With the Porsche 917K being sunsetted due to new FIA regulations for 1972, the German automaker looked to the Porsche 911 as the future foundation for its next generation turbo endurance racer. Beginning with the Porsche Turbo RSR, 934, 934.5, and its final form emerging as the 935, these 911-based race cars carried a 930 Turbo VIN to show its origin. Introduced in 1976 to the FIA Group 5, the Porsche 935 quickly established dominance and would become one of the most celebrated and winning race cars in motorsport history. With outright wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and countless other victories, the 935 platform might as well be synonymous with “utterly dominating and winning”. So it was fitting that Porsche, celebrating its 70th anniversary since its arrival in the United States, would reveal this: the 2019 Porsche 935/19. View Listing Reimagining the Porsche 935 in modern times is no simple task, and certainly has quite a bit of pressure and motorsport legacy to live up to. Despite this, Porsche’s designers and engineers were told what many might consider a blank check in the motorsport world: everything goes, no rules. Reimagined for the 21st century, this Porsche factory “outlaw” would not have to conform to any set of racing rules or be road going, giving full reign to its mighty design and engineering teams. They were unleashed to design the most extreme 911-based track day machine, provided that it paid tribute in suitable fashion to Porsche’s original 935. Designed to be a project for fun, thanking worldwide Porsche fans and involved employees alike, the result was nothing short of spectacular. Officially revealed at Rennsport Reunion VI at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA in September of 2018, the 2019 Porsche 935 immediately was sent on hot laps to the surprise of thousands of attendees. A true trifecta, a styling, aerodynamic and technological tour de force, the new 935 was derived from the Porsche 911 GT2 RS mechanical underpinnings, and starts with a lightweight chassis cloaked in full carbon fiber bodywork. With its modern aerodynamic design and massive rear spoiler providing cooling to components and massive downforce, it is unmistakable in its homage to the Porsche 935/78 “Moby Dick”. Its utilitarian cabin is trimmed with lightweight carbon fiber and alcantara on the dashboard, while it is outfitted with a fully integrated roll cage, race-spec fire suppression system, a Recaro racing seat, and a 6-point racing harness. Through the Porsche CFK multifunction steering wheel and instrument cluster, sourced directly from the GT3 R, the driver controls things like the Porsche Stability Management, ABS, traction control, TMPS, and even a pit-speed limiter. Although this track monster is devoid of most creature comforts, air conditioning was included to ensure driver comfort at any temperature. The PDK transmission shifter, adorned with wood, is a thoughtful homage to the Porsche 917K, which often featured a balsa wood shifter knob. Power is provided in ample quantities for this racer in the form of its 3.8L twin-turbo flat-six engine pumping out 700 horsepower and more than 550 lb-ft of torque. Its solid mounted 7-speed dual clutch PDK transmission from the GT2 RS pushes power to the rear wheels only through an electronically adjustable, limited-slip differential optimized for the race track. With a 0-60 time in 2.3 seconds, top speed of 211 mph, and the braking system consisting of 4-wheel, six-piston calipers with 380/355 ventilated steel rotors, the 935/19 is nothing if not exceptionally capable on the track. Porsche built just 77 of these Porsche 935/19s for the 2020 model year, with a base price starting at $829,000 with a carefully-selection application process for those lucky individuals. Being a unique and special vehicle, there was no configurator and details and specifications were discussed directly with Porsche by phone or email. This Porsche 935/19 is #49 of the total 77 production, purchased new by a noted American Porsche collector and owner of some of Porsche’s most important competition models, including an original RSR, 934, 934.5, and an original 935. Spec’d in the iconic Interscope Racing livery (a $27,000 option) campaigned by Ted Fields and Danny Ongais. Paying tribute to the incredible successes of the Interscope Racing team with the original Porsche 935, including an overall win at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1979, piloted by Ted Fields, Danny Ongais, and Hurley Haywood, the most winning driver in the Daytona 24 Hours history. The Porsche 935/19 remains in pristine, unraced and untracked condition. Accompanied by the track spares package, a $44,000 option, including a complete set of BBS motorsport wheels, brake pads and rotors, and auxiliary equipment with cases. Free from rules and regulations, Porsche designers and engineers went all in on the 935/19 and it truly shows. While some cars leave a lasting impact, others live on to become timeless icons, representing a moment in automotive and motorsports history that will never be forgotten. Referred to as a "moment car" for the Porsche by Jerry Seinfeld, the 917 represents a moment when the brand's DNA was driven by its success on the race track. And while every Porsche 917 proves to be special, with only 65 ever made, the most significant example is Steve McQueen's Gulf Racing Porsche 917K featured in the 1971 film Le Mans. Famously owned by Jerry Seinfeld after finding it in the lower parking garage of a California car dealership by longtime friend and fellow Porsche fanatic Spike Feresten, Steve McQueen's 1969 Porsche 917K recently made waves in the automotive world as Mecum Auctions presented it as the main feature for its ever-popular Kissimmee auction event. But even with everyone on its side, the car was bid all the way to $25 million and concluded as a "no sale." After believing that one of the most influential cars in existence didn't sell with a $25 million offer amongst a worldwide crowd of fans and buyers, Jerry Seinfeld has finally opened up about the story behind his Porsche 917K on the newest episode of Spike's Car Radio podcast. Jerry reveals that although the perfect situation would be to sell the car at auction, the event and the publicity of the Porsche being for sale served as even more advertisement for any qualified buyers. He goes on to explain that a number of interested buyers gathered later to talk about the 917's future ownership. Keeping the buyer's identity completely anonymous as they wish to remain, Jerry finally tells Spike and Zuckerman that the 1969 Porsche 917K was privately sold and shipped to its new owner's home. Although the exact number of sales remains a secret, Jerry hints at the selling price after agreeing with Zuckerman asking if it was more or less in the range of $25 million. Without worrying about selling quite possibly the most iconic Porsche or how much money he would profit, it's even more comical to hear that Jerry never even tuned into the live bidding being televised for millions worldwide. The three new experiences showcase the Macan Electric, the Macan Turbo Electric, and a comparison between the Macan Turbo Electric and the Macan GTS. A 90-minute program sees drivers go through a safety orientation with a Porsche Drive Instructor, and then take to the course to try various driver development modules on the PECs’ various track facilities. The 911 S/T with a charitable story. Porsche's philanthropic approach to supporting some of the world's most significant causes is almost as impressive as the sports cars it engineers for the road. Porsche uses itself as a platform for awareness and its most exclusive cars as ways to generate proceeds. Recently announced in partnership with RM Sotheby's, Porsche Cars North America featured a Porsche 911 S/T as part of a special auction event to support American Red Cross disaster relief efforts, including those for the California wildfires. The rare Porsche 911 S/T found a new home, and in the process, it has made a significant impact. Finished in Shore Blue Metallic and optioned with the Heritage Design Package, chassis #1,919 of 1,963 was auctioned by RM Sotheby's for an impressive $1 million. With all proceeds directed to the American Red Cross, the funds will aid those affected by the devastating wildfires in California and recent flooding in the South. The anonymous buyer, a known Porsche collector who previously purchased the one-off 911 Sally Special, has once again stepped up to add another incredible example to the fleet. The 911 S/T auction was especially significant as it was the only remaining example in the U.S. without a designated owner. Porsche Cars North America, RM Sotheby's, and even actor Orlando Bloom played a role in assuring the sale's success, with the auction house waiving its fees to maximize the donation.
