The incredible event featured showcases of the new Panamera and a Sonderwunsch bespoke 911 Turbo. The Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai recently concluded, marking a significant milestone in the automotive world. This annual event, known for showcasing the legacy and innovation of Porsche, attracted over 27,000 fans, making it a grand celebration of the brand’s 75 years of sports car excellence and 60 years of the iconic 911 model. The festival, set against the backdrop of the Dubai Design District, was a celebration of the cultural phenomenon that is Porsche, blending the love for classic and modern cars with arts and culture. This year's highlight was the first public display of the new Panamera, a model that continues Porsche's legacy of combining luxury with performance. Additionally, the unveiling of a special 911 Turbo Sonderwunsch, a bespoke model paying homage to the first 911 Turbo, captivated the audience. This unique vehicle is a testament to Porsche's dedication to customization and heritage and the abilities of its Sonderwunsch bespoke program, showcasing the brand's ability to blend modern engineering with classic and unique designs. Manfred Bräunl, CEO of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, emphasized the festival's importance as a celebration of the Porsche community's passion and strength in the region. The event's success, he noted, was a result of the collective effort of Porsche owners and enthusiasts who shared their cherished sports cars with the audience. Their participation brought to life the spirit of Porsche, making the event a memorable experience for everyone involved. The festival also marked the regional debuts of the 718 Spyder RS and the Vision 357 Speedster concept, alongside the all-electric Mission X hypercar concept. These models highlight Porsche's commitment to innovation and its vision for the future of sports cars. Additionally, the event featured a diverse display of vehicles from the Porsche Museum collection, including a 911 S/T, across eight zones. Each zone, from the 60 Years of 911 to the Porsche Museum heritage truck, offered a unique insight into Porsche's rich history and future directions. One of the most eye-catching features of the event was a giant inflatable 911 that entered the Guinness World Record books as the 'largest inflatable vehicle'. Towering over the Dubai Design District, this bright red sports car replica, based on the first-generation 911, was visible from miles away, symbolizing Porsche's significant impact on the automotive landscape. In addition to these displays, the festival also celebrated the history of the 911 Turbo through a bespoke project. A one-off 911 Turbo, remastered via the Sonderwunsch personalisation program, was revealed, drawing inspiration from the “911 Turbo Nr. 1” commissioned for Louise Piëch, daughter of Ferdinand Porsche. The original car, with its narrow-chassis 911 Carrera body and distinctive large Turbo rear wing, served as inspiration for a modern interpretation of a classic, blending historical significance with contemporary craftsmanship. The Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai stands as a testament to the brand's enduring appeal and its continuous evolution. It not only celebrated the past but also looked forward to the future of sports cars, underlining Porsche's position as a titan in the automotive industry. Bill Gates' Porsche 959

The annual Forbes 400 was released Sept. 16, offering to the world a list of America's wealthiest individuals. This year's list has a combined wealth of $2 trillion, an increase from last year's $1.7 trillion and the highest combined wealth in the history of the list. Sitting at the top, Bill Gates has yet again been crowned America's wealthiest with a net worth of $72 billion. Gates, the 57-year-old behind Microsoft, has a long history of wealth, charity and, surprisingly, Porsches. Bill Gates Porsche 959 in silver is one rare beauty. Gates first purchased a Porsche 911 Turbo in 1979 and rumor has it that he was pulled over quite a few times in the blue sports car. This 911 has since been auctioned off for $80,000. However, we aren't here to talk about a 911, but instead, a car that proved Porsche was capable of much more than an air-cooled 911: the Gates 959. And it was this car that Gates fought for years. Image Source: Porsche (left), Microsoft (right) The Porsche 959 was the most impressive car to come out of the German automaker's doors, and quite possibly the greatest car of the 80's. This twin-turbo supercar came equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, instead of the normal 5-speed. It was capable of completing a 0 to 60 run in just 3 seconds and hit upwards of 195 mph for its top speed. These are incredible numbers, not only for a car released in 1986 but also for cars released nowadays. It’s no wonder Gates had such an affinity for this car. 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort (Darin Schnabel ©2020 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s) While most Porsches can import quite easily from Europe to the USA, the 959 had complications abound, making it impossible for US citizens to get their hands on one of these supercars. One of the citizens was Gates, who ordered a 959 from Porsche, only to have it impounded at customs. The reasoning provided to justify the impounding was that the 959 had not yet cleared crash-testing requirements and did not meet EPA standards. Gates' German supercar sat idly by for over a decade. Porsche 959 interior (Darin Schnabel ©2020 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s) With Gates anxious to get his hands on his Porsche 959, he worked together with others to get the "Show and Display" law passed. This law would allow privately imported vehicles to be exempt from the Federal Motor Safety Standards (FMVSS) if the car met a standard of "historical or technological significance." Another way for cars to be exempt from the FMVSS is if the model in question had less than 500 models produced. This was good news for Gates, as the Porsche 959 was only produced 337 times. Porsche 959 engine (Darin Schnabel ©2020 Courtesy of RM Sotheby’s) The passing of the "Show and Display" law allowed Gates to get his hands on his 959 and experience true Porsche power. He can even be seen today driving his car around occasionally, making sure he does not reach the annual mileage limitation of 2,500 on-road miles that came with the passing of the "Show and Display" law. Porsche Upgrades Its Factory For Future EV Sports Cars

A $270 million investment goes towards integrating electric sports car production alongside traditional models. Porsche has embarked on a significant transformation of its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen production plant, investing over $270 million in a strategic upgrade to future-proof its manufacturing capabilities. This revamp not only marks a pivotal step in Porsche's journey towards electrification but also celebrates significant milestones: 60 years of the iconic 911 and 75 years of Porsche sports cars. The extensive reconstruction measures and extensions undertaken are a testament to Porsche's commitment to innovation and excellence. Central to this transformation is the integration of electric vehicle production on the traditional assembly line, which has historically been home to Porsche's esteemed two-door sports cars with boxer engines. This bold move heralds a new era in Porsche's manufacturing, blending the production of combustion-engine vehicles and electric sports cars. Albrecht Reimold, Porsche AG's Executive Board Member for Production and Logistics, highlights this development as a crucial milestone, ushering in an era of mixed production that aligns with the concept of a smart factory. A noteworthy aspect of Porsche's upgrade involves the implementation of advanced production systems, mirroring the production process of the Taycan, Porsche's first fully electric sports car. The adoption of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in the assembly of two-door cars is a leap towards increased efficiency and flexibility. This transition to a more automated, efficient production line, known as “Flexiline”, is particularly advantageous for managing the mixed production of combustion and electric vehicles. Porsche's commitment to maintaining its high-quality standards is evident in the introduction of new quality checkpoints and refinement of quality management processes. The implementation of first-time-quality approaches and the integration of standardized quality assurance and approval checkpoints are indicative of Porsche's dedication to excellence. The introduction of a new light tunnel and the adaptation of acoustic test benches to accommodate electric vehicles are further examples of Porsche's meticulous attention to detail. In addition to production enhancements, Porsche has also extended its logistics capabilities within the body shop. The introduction of a new building and a high-bay rack system enhances the efficiency of parts supply for both Taycan and sports car production. The recent opening of a fully automated parts warehouse, boasting a considerable storage volume, is a strategic move to streamline operations and ensure a smooth supply chain. The integration of electric motor assembly for the upcoming electric Porsche Macan into the existing engine plant is another pivotal step in Porsche's electrification strategy. This expansion not only accommodates the assembly of V8 engines for the Panamera and Cayenne but also paves the way for the production of the electric Macan, scheduled to debut in 2024 at the Leipzig site. Porsche's substantial investment in the Zuffenhausen plant is a strategic pivot towards a future where electric and combustion-engine vehicles coexist in harmony. This move not only reinforces Porsche's commitment to innovation and sustainability but also positions the brand at the forefront of the automotive industry's shift towards electrification. As Porsche continues to navigate the evolving landscape of automotive manufacturing, its Zuffenhausen plant stands as a beacon of progress, innovation, and a commitment to the future of sports car production. Porsche Revamps Its Turbo Models With A New Exclusive 'Tu...

For nearly half a century, Porsche's Turbo models have held a revered status within the brand, representing the pinnacle of performance for each model series. In a move to further emphasize its exclusivity, Porsche is now introducing a significant aesthetic enhancement across its Turbo lineup. Central to this update is the addition of a new and exclusive color tone named Turbonite, replacing the traditional gold in the modernized crest. This elegant metallic grey, specifically developed for the Turbo models, adds an air of sophistication and uniqueness to the exterior and interior details. The new Panamera generation is set to lead this transition, with its world premiere scheduled for November 24, 2023. According to Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, the Turbo models have evolved into a brand of their own since the introduction of the turbocharged 911 in 1974. This latest initiative aims to make the Turbo versions more visible and distinct from other derivatives like the GTS, through a consistent and special Turbo aesthetic across all model series. The Turbonite shade is not limited to the crest but extends to various external and internal components, including the rear lettering, the Daylight Opening (DLO), side window borders, and potentially the front apron inlays, spokes, or aero blades in the light alloy wheels, depending on the model. Inside, Turbonite adorns trim strips, belt straps, and controls like the mode switch and air conditioning panel, offering a sleek contrast in a black interior environment. This strategic move by Porsche redefines the Turbo models' visual identity while reinforcing their standing as top-tier high-performance sports cars, blending luxury with power in a uniquely Porsche way. John Oates Reunites with His Beloved Porsche 911 Carrera

Pop icon John Oates recovers his special-order Porsche 911, celebrating a reunion with his cherished Carrera. John Oates, a name synonymous with the legendary pop duo Hall & Oates, shares more than fame and music with the renowned automaker Porsche; both celebrate their 75th birthdays in 2023. Oates, known for classic hits like "Maneater" and "Out of Touch," has now reclaimed a piece of his history: his specially ordered 911 Carrera. Born the same year Porsche released their first sports car, the 356 "No. 1" Roadster, Oates developed an affinity for the brand from a young age. After achieving success in the music industry, he indulged in his passion for Porsche and acquired a red 911 Turbo, which would begin a lifelong love affair with the brand. His success with Hall & Oates, selling over 40 million albums, provided Oates the luxury of personalizing a brand-new 911 Carrera 3.2 in Pearl White with black Fuchs rims and Dove Grey leather, a testament to his and Porsche's shared dedication to excellence and customization. However, the tale took a turn when Oates, while downsizing his collection, reluctantly sold the Carrera. It wasn't long before regret set in, and the search for the lost 911 began. Despite his continued success as a solo artist, the Carrera remained a missing piece of his past. The story of Oates and his wife, Aimee, intertwines with Porsche in more ways than one. They both drive Porsche models; Oates owns a 1967 911 S and a 911 Turbo (964), while Aimee enjoys her Macan GTS, chosen for its vibrant Python Green color that reflects her playful spirit. Their shared love for the brand extends beyond personal use; they recently donated a 1980s Tiga SC84 Sports 2000 race car to the Amelia Island Concours, emphasizing the joy found in generosity. Fate would have it that Oates' special-order 911 Carrera would reappear on an auction site, recognized as his own. In a thrilling turn of events, he reacquired the car, which, to their delight, had been meticulously preserved by its subsequent owners. Now named Karma Carrera, the 911 not only represents the couple's journey together but is cherished as a future heirloom for their son. Oates finds solace and therapy in driving the Karma Carrera through the landscapes of Tennessee, embracing the pure experience of the drive, the car's engine providing the soundtrack to his reflective journeys. This return of the Karma Carrera is a celebration of history, passion, and the timeless allure of Porsche that resonates with enthusiasts worldwide. For John Oates, the Karma Carrera is not just a car but a symbol of his life's work, loves, and legacy, now complete with its return to its rightful home.
