McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Celebrates Their Open-Top History

Once their new factory opened in Stuttgart, Dr. Porsche knew his brand needed a dedicated race car to accompany the 356 Speedster. Inspired by his father's designs of the 1933 Auto Union, the 550 Spyder was a topless, mid-engine endurance machine. Only 90 were assembled, and they set the stage for seven decades of roadsters. The 914 was introduced in 1969, and they remain affordable & fun machines. The 911 Targa was born in 1966, and the 2021 example is a testament to longevity. Along with the 911 Speedster, it allows their flagship to offer four distinct body styles between coupe and cabriolet. Porsche US Delivery Report for Second Quarter Released

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many automotive retailers and manufacturing plants had to shut down. This caused an expected downturn in the delivery of automobiles across the board and Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) Second Quarter U.S. Retail Delivery report proves that. Their report included retail deliveries by 192 independently owned and operated U.S. dealers, all of whom tallied up 12,192 deliveries from April to June. From 2019 to 2020, that's a 19.9% drop even with the additional deliveries of the new Taycan. Interestingly enough, Porsche's Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales saw an increase in sales by 8.1% year-over-year. Though they saw their Q2 in the negatives, it showed signs of a solid rebound. Presented by Circle Porsche Only 1,948 Porsche Speedsters were built. Only the best dealers received allotments for this car, as it represents the Grand Finale of the 991 series Porsche 911. While the available color palette included four basic and four metallic shades, Porsche did offer Lizard Green, Miami Blue, and Crayon were heavy hitters on the window sticker. As with all amazing Porsches, its the options not offered that count the most. Every item painted in Gulf Orange must go through a rigorous agreement with their licensing department. Even merchandise as insignificant as a ballpoint pen it treated to the same scrutiny to preserve the image of their brand. That is why Circle Porsche chose to take up the challenge. Car # 1,596 is the only Speedster to be bathed in Gulf Orange. From the wheels, air vents, seat vents, stitching, and even the SiriusXM antenna, no detail was overlooked. The Speedster foregoes rear seats in favor of an aerodynamic tonneau. Under it lies a manual top that can disappear in seconds, without heavy hydraulics or complex actuators. In keeping with its predecessors, the windshield is 2" shorter than a 911 convertible. Along with shorter windows, the Speedster looks like 200 mph while sitting still. This was made possible by use of carbon fiber wherever possible and not offering All Wheel Drive. Being the lightest 911 on the market, engineers at Weissach recalibrated the rear-wheel steering for optimal fun in the corners. Many dealers racked up demo miles to enjoy the power of a GT3 RS. A six-speed manual transmission distributes 510 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque to reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. But this car has only amassed 22 miles since it left the Porsche Exclusive department. 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and Caymans Get Upgraded

For the upcoming 2021 Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman models, there will be a bunch of upgraded standard features included. The standard 718 Boxster and Cayman models, as well as the T, S and GTS 4.0 variants, will have the following as standard: automatic two-zone climate control, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay, bi-xenon headlights and auto-dimming mirrors. One option that should be mentioned is the option to replace the standard six-speed manual transmission with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. The 800-volt base battery pack has 396 total cells, and Porsche Taycan horsepower is rated between 482 to 750 hp, depending on the trim-level selected. Using a permanent synchronous design, DC power at a nominal 800 volts is transformed into a rotating field. The Taycan Turbo S is wound for 600 amps, while the lesser versions are rated at 300 amps. The car is designed to be recharged by a charger developed for the Taycan. To recharge fully from empty, you’ll need to plug it into the standard home 9.6-kW charger for 11 hours. However, an available 270 kW fast charger will take the battery from as low as a 5% charge up to an 80% charge within just 15 minutes. The home charging system can also be pre-programmed to reduce charging times in hot or cold temperatures. The charger is capable of managing a house's power flow. It is designed to cost optimize charging, prevent brownouts, and reduce the charge to the car for added safety. Porsche drivers can tap into the Electrify America (Porsche’s charging partner) charging network for free for the first three years of ownership to quickly recharge at any charging port. With a little planning, this makes the Taycan viable for road trips as the battery’s range is limited to about 300 miles per charge, depending on the driving conditions. Although the battery can be force-fed by quick DC charging, longer charges at lower current will allow the car to perform well for year. Porsche Taycan Transmission So, does the Taycan have gears? The short answer is yes. Porsche had to re-write the rules when it came to the Taycan’s transmission by innovating a solution for the heavy, electric Taycan, thanks to its massive battery. This weight distribution affords the car a low center of gravity and increased stability. Consequently, the Taycan is unique from other EVs because of its one-speed gear reduction in the front, and a two-speed transmission with a limited-slip differential in the rear. Most EV’s only have a single one-speed transmission. Porsche developed the transmission exclusively for the Taycan to ensure high efficiency and maintain power reserves even at higher speeds. Essentially, the high and low gears shift seamlessly after take-off to accommodate the immense power from the motors to make the vehicle as efficient as possible. The first speed stays in place until the Taycan reaches 62mph, multiplying wheel torque to get the car moving. Then the transmission automatically shifts to the more economical second gear. This allows the rear electric motor to spin at a slower speed, increasing range and extending the battery life. This transmission design makes the Porsche Taycan a hair faster than its main competitor, the Model S. Porsche Taycan Brakes Stopping a new Porsche Taycan for sale is unlike any other automotive experience. The driver can select how much energy the electric motors will regenerate once the accelerator is free. At the highest level, the car will immediately slow once your foot is off the pedal. Not only will this save battery range, it incurs no wear on the brake pads. In a full stop, the car uses maximum regen-mode along with electric-assisted hydraulics to prevent an impact. In normal city driving, your brake pads and rotors could last for years. Heating them up once in awhile should be done to keep moisture out of the system. Optional on the Taycan Turbo, the standard equipment on the Taycan Turbo S consists of 16.5" rotors squeezed by 10-piston calipers. Even the rears are 16.1", making the rotors much larger than Porsche wheels of only a few years ago. Standard wheels measure 20"x 9" front and 20" x 11" rear in order to preserve optimal grip and steering balance. The Turbo S steps up 1" in diameter for less sidewall deflection. Porsche Taycan Soul Journey Day 4: Endurance Porsche Taycan Interior The luxurious Taycan interior is entirely digital and full of accessible technology. Up to four crisp digital displays, including a massive 16.8” curved, customizable driver’s touchscreen display, 10.9” infotainment screen, a smaller third and optional fourth passenger-side touchscreen make this a car of the future. The interface is pretty user-friendly and will likely improve with future updates. The quiet interior is relatively close quarters for some given the underfoot battery compartment. The stylish and comfortable, a well-designed interior is outfitted with standard faux-leather and can be upgraded to RaceTex or real leather. A stunning panoramic sunroof is standard in the Taycan. Opting for the SportChrono package adds the eponymous timepiece amidships of the dash. While it is a cue to Porsche's past, some will prefer the clean look and unobstructed view that comes without it. Porsche Taycan Standout Features The Porsche Taycan's electric motors are the most power-dense in the EV world. Each hairpin has a consistent air-gap to protect the inverters, and a water-cooling jacket to mitigate heat. The warmth provided can be channeled to the cabin via the heater core, and to modulate battery temperatures in colder climates. Once the rear-mounted transmission is in high gear, the pulses can be dialed back to reduce heat and increase efficiency in all areas. This allows the rear motor to be at an ideal RPM, while the front can act as a brake generator only. 2019 Porsche Speedster Heading to Mecum Auctions Indianap...

Sequence Build No. 1,373 out of a total limited production output of just 1,948 examples, this 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster is in “as-new” condition with just 113 original miles. Optioned with the Heritage Design Package, a $24,510 extra, it features two-tone leather interior appointment, black brake calipers with white “PORSCHE” script, gold “SPEEDSTER” badging, classic Porsche crests and silver-colored wheels. The Speedster is offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox (PDK is not an option) sourced from the 911R. The suspension rides on a staggered set of center-lock wheels, 21-inch rear and 20-inch front, mounted on steamroller-sized low aspect ratio Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The GT3 Touring suspension used on the Speedster is a more compliant setup than that of its razor-edged GT3 RS brethren. Hence, the ride is firm but supple while delivering massive cornering grip. New 2021 Porsche Cayenne GTS Revealed With Twin-Turbo V8

The new 2021 Porsche Cayenne GTS and Cayenne GTS Coupe have been revealed, and they're both bringing forth the power of the V8 engine. Both of these variants will be powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in the Panamera GTS. This engine creates 453 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, and it's mated to Porsche's eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. When pushed for urgency, these Cayennes can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 or even quicker at 4.2 seconds when Performance Start is used (part of the Sport Chrono Package that's standard in the Coupe). Another aspect of the new 2021 Porsche Cayenne GTS and Cayenne GTS Coupe that will surely catch the ears of many is the new centrally-located Sport exhaust system on the Coupe models that gives off a wonderful exhaust note.
