McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Takes The Taycan From Stuttgart To Istanbul On A ...

The Porsche Taycan shines on an international road trip. Between Stuttgart, Germany, and Istanbul, Turkey, there are 7 countries to cross, and Mayk Wienkötter, Porsche’s press spokesperson for the Taycan, embarked on the journey to join a Taycan meetup organized by the Taycan Club Turkey, and to put the Porsche Taycan’s ability to travel long distances to the test. The comfort, driving range, practicality of the Porsche Taycan, and the efficacy of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure through the multiple countries, both inside and outside of the European Union, would all be the dependent factors on the road trip’s success. The trip started at the Porsche Museum in the morning, fighting rush hour traffic to get out of Stuttgart. The first charging stop only required 18 minutes to charge a mostly depleted battery back to 80 percent. After that, the trip went through Austria and Slovenia and then to Croatia to stop and charge at a station south of Zagreb. A lengthy wait at the border between Croatia and Serbia added to the challenge of the road trip, and at a hotel in Belgrade, the Taycan could charge overnight. Leaving Serbia and entering Bulgaria, the Taycan made it through a long traffic jam in Sofia before stopping to charge at a station south of Sofia. It only needed 16 minutes to charge to two-thirds capacity. A final charging stop came after another traffic jam, and the Taycan reached Istanbul after driving for nearly 1,400 miles 25 hours after the trip's start. The Taycan meetup in Istanbul featured 25 cars, the Taycan Turbo GT, and the new electric Porsche Macan that Porsche brought to the event. On the way back to Stuttgart, the first charging stop happened at a station off the highway. The second stop, at a car dealership, needed only 20 minutes to get from 9 percent to 81 percent. After 12 hours of driving, the first stage of the trip back home ended in Belgrade, where the car charged at the hotel. Leaving the next morning, the next charging stop was the same one visited before, south of Zagreb in Croatia. After that, the next charging stop was in Austria, and one last stopping after a traffic jam in Munich had to be taken before returning to Stuttgart. With over 2,700 miles driven throughout the road trip, the Porsche Taycan proved on its journey from Stuttgart to Istanbul and back that it’s not just an exciting and futuristic luxury sports car with all-electric power but also a practical and comfortable long-distance journeying machine. Porsche’s peak electric performance takes to the track. Formula E has become an exciting stage for innovation in the world of electric mobility, helping shift the perception of electric cars by showcasing them as bonafide racing machines, and Porsche is not only taking part in the movement by participating in the Formula E series, but also with its burgeoning electric performance car lineup, which most recently includes the new Taycan Turbo GT, the most hot-blooded version of the Taycan yet. Record-Breaking New 1,093HP Porsche Taycan Turbo GT Revealed

The Porsche Taycan reaches new levels of electric performance. Porsche recently set an incredible 7:05.55 Nürburgring Nordschleife time with a Porsche Taycan model that it was yet to announce. The blisteringly-quick time eclipsed that of a Taycan Turbo S with a special performance package by a whopping 26 seconds, and both lap times were set by Porsche development driver Lars Kern. At the time, all we knew was that the upcoming version of the Taycan was going to be even more hot-blooded and performance-focused than before, and showcased incredible electric performance on the revered Nürburgring. Now, that version of the Taycan has been revealed: the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. In fact, the Nürburgring isn’t the only track where the new Taycan Turbo GT has set a record, with Lars Kern taking to the iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in February to set an incredible record for the fastest road-legal electric car to lap the circuit, at a time of 1:27.87. Like its Cayenne stablemate, the Taycan Turbo GT hones in on performance, adding a motorsport edge to the already-formidable all-electric sports car. In fact, with 1,093 horsepower with Launch Control and 988 lb/ft of torque, it’s the most powerful production Porsche yet. In addition, it gets from 0-60 in as little as under 2.2 seconds, and tops out at 190 mph, with the available Weissach Package, the coveted track-focused package featured on many Porsche GT cars. Top speed without the Weissach Package is 180 mph. Meant for setting incredible lap times on the track, the Taycan Turbo GT’s Attack Mode increases power by 161 horsepower for 10 seconds, with the push of a button. However, power isn’t the only aspect of the Taycan Turbo GT that makes it so scarily quick on the track. It’s 165 pounds lighter than the Taycan Turbo S, thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber throughout, including with the use of racing-focused carbon fiber seats. The Porsche Active Ride Suspension also features tuning specific to the Turbo GT, and the Turbo GT features exclusive 21-inch wheels, designed for weight savings and brake ventilation. As for brakes, the standard ceramic brakes are based on the PCCB (Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brake) system, but are revised to be ultra-lightweight. To distinguish these brakes, the calipers feature an exclusive finish in Victory Gold. The rear spoiler features flaps specifically designed for the Taycan Turbo GT, with a glossy carbon fiber finish that emphasizes its performance-focused purpose. An adaptive wing is standard, while the Weissach Package adds a carbon fiber fixed wing. Six colors are available, including Purple Sky Metallic and Pale Blue Metallic, new colors made exclusively for the Taycan Turbo GT. Taycan logo decals are also available for the lower sections of the doors and the hood, in Voltage Blue, as well as glossy and matte black. Lightweight carbon fiber bucket seats are available, as well as adaptive sport seats with 18-way adjustment. The Sport Chrono package from the Taycan Turbo S is included, and available are trims in either GT Silver or Voltage Blue, with Turbo GT logo embroidery on the headrests, and a Turbo GT logo situated under the climate controls. The Weissach package changes the interior logos to Weissach logos, similar to other Porsche GT models. Pricing for the United States has yet to be announced for the new Taycan Turbo GT, but it will most likely be significantly more expensive than the Taycan Turbo S, which currently starts at $209,000. However, whatever the new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT MRSP ends up being, many collectors and automotive enthusiasts will find it worth the price to pay for a futuristic, all-electric high-performance machine with incredible lap times and broken records already to its name. Porsche is ready to revamp its EV pioneer. As Porsche’s first all-electric model, the Porsche Taycan has sent shockwaves through the industry with its excellent performance, luxury, design, and innovation. However, while it might feel like the Taycan was added to Porsche’s lineup very recently, it’s actually going on five years since the Taycan was first introduced. Porsche continues to raise the bar of electric performance. In the automotive world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife is one of the most revered, respected, and challenging tests of performance, engineering and skill, and a lap time on the feared track is one of the most irrefutable measures of excellence when it comes to both a car and its driver. As the industry’s sweeping transition to electrification enters full swing, electric vehicles are no exception when it comes to trial by Nürburging. In August 2022, Porsche took the Taycan Turbo S to the Nürburgring to test its mettle, and with a performance package, the electric sport sedan delivered incredibly impressive performance on the track. However, the legendary 75-year-old luxury performance manufacturer wasn’t satisfied with just that, and returned with a pre-series upcoming performance-focused model of the Taycan to improve the lap time even further. The pre-series track-focused Taycan not only became the fastest electric Porsche to take the track, but improved on the Taycan Turbo S’s lap time by an incredible 26 seconds, an immense gap in the world of racing. The lap time was 7:05.55, putting the pre-series Taycan model in the league of electric hypercars, and otherwise cementing its place in the revered realm of performance cars with low 7-minute times on the Nordschleife route. Represented in distance, that 26-second gap meant that when driver Lars Kern crossed the finish line in the new upcoming Taycan, he was almost a mile ahead of where he was in the Taycan Turbo S during its previous record run. With this new high-performance all-electric Porsche Taycan model on the horizon, it’s already proved its incredible track-focused performance in arguably the most spectacular way possible. The Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo Completes Its 3,000-M...

The Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo's trek across Australia showcases its range, efficiency, and the nation's growing electric infrastructure. Proving its remarkable capabilities in all conditions, the Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo has completed a groundbreaking 3,107-mile journey across Australia, highlighting long-distance travel for electric vehicles. Kicking off in Darwin and ending at Bondi Beach, the adventure served as testing grounds for the Taycan's stellar range and Australia's rapidly expanding network of electric vehicle charging stations. Making use of a variety of charging options, the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo showcased its cutting-edge battery technology, durability, and efficiency. Equipped with an optional 22kw onboard charger, the vehicle optimized its charging times, even in the most remote locations. Over 19 days, the car made 27 charging stops and spent a total of 85 hours charging, mostly overnight. The route was nothing short of awe-inspiring, featuring stops at Nitmiluk National Park, the stunning Nitmiluk Gorge, the quaint town of Daly Waters, and the iconic Bathurst Racetrack. The car also conquered the infamous Simpson Desert dune ‘Big Red’ and navigated through the roads of the Blue Mountains before reaching its final destination at Bondi Beach. The expedition aligns with Porsche's electrification strategy, as the all-electric Macan nears completion and will be available in 2024. Following it will be the all-electric versions of the 718 and the Cayenne, cementing Porsche's commitment to electric mobility. The Porsche Taycan is able to do more things quickly than drive. One of the most convenient aspects of owning an electric vehicle is the fact that owners have the ability to charge their vehicles at home. For Porsche’s all-electric model, the Taycan, that convenience is even better, as Porsche has announced a new upgrade for the onboard charging components of the vehicle that can nearly halve at-home charging times from 0-100% battery capacity. Better yet, for current Porsche Taycan owners, the new device is able to be retrofitted to their own cars. MUST READ: Porsche Design Hits The Ice With Its New Chronograph 1 GP 2023 Edition, Limited to 250-Pieces With the new charging device, charging time at 19.2 kW is reduced to 4.8 hours from 9.5 hours for cars with the Performance Battery, while charging time for cars with the Performance Battery Plus is down from 10.5 hours to only 5.3. Current Taycan owners can have the kit ordered and installed at a Porsche service center for $1,850.15. The estimated labor time for the job to be completed is 12 hours. However, should you want the improved charging system on a new Taycan, all you need to do is select the new option on the configurator. Along with the improved onboard charging device, Porsche has also revealed a new 19.2 kW Wall Charger Connect, which must be hardwired to a 100-amp circuit by an electrician for optimal performance, but is adjustable for other configurations.
