2016 Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT

By Edward Jones –  September 26, 2016

2016 Jeep Cherokee SRT Review

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been a staple in the SUV market. Heck, my family has gone through multiple model years of the SUV and each of them was just as capable as the last. As for 2016, the Grand Cherokee's strengths are still there and the SRT version amplifies each of them.On the outside, the Grand Cherokee SRT is very similar to the base model, with a few modifications, including the front and rear fascias, headlights and exhaust tips. So, it's an SUV everyone will recognize as a Jeep, but those familiar with the brand will recognize the SRT-ness that's been added. For me, one of the most noticeable changes has to be the 20-inch x 10-inch 5-Spoke wheels, wrapped in the 295/45ZR20 BSW All Season Tires. 2016 Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRTInside our test example was a cabin that's been dressed to the nines thanks to the optional SRT Premium Laguna Leather Package ($1,495). On top of the plush leather was other useful features like the heated front and second-row seats, effortless Uconnect system, rear seat dual-screen Blu-Ray DVD player (optional $1,995) and more. As for comfort, if you've ever been in a Grand Cherokee you know that the front and second-row seats are comfortable as can be, even for long road trips. Now, about the power. Being an SRT model, this Grand Cherokee packs a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 that's worth every penny. Capable of 475 hp, this SUV acts as a pretty solid sleeper vehicle and even comes equipped with launch control. Did I try it out? You bet. Did it feel weird launching an SUV? You bet, but this wasn't the first time Jeep has implemented this feature in their Grand Cherokee SRT.The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is a jack-of-all-trades, capable of taking you off of the road, on the highway for a road trip or on the drag strip for exciting launches. The best part? You can partake in all of these activities in an incredibly comfortable interior. If you've ever driven or owned a Grand Cherokee, just think of the SRT as a powered-up version that's louder, faster and more luxurious. 2016 Jeep® Grand Cherokee SRT

In the Driver's Seat: 2016 Range Rover LWB

Most Americans don't realize Land Rover offers the Range in two sizes. To see how their latest build compares against other luxury SUVs they sent us a fully loaded Range Rover for a week of testing.Everyone knows someone obsessed with Land Rover products. Much like Chevy guys or Ford fans, they can't immediately quantify why they love them, maybe it's genetic. Driving by our headquarters you will see several late model Rovers along with a classic Defender 130. So we have ample opportunities to experience them. But nothing could have prepared us for the power. The 5.0 liter supercharged V8 makes 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. With the low gearing needed for 4WD, it is one of the fastest SUVs we have driven.Once your passengers stop giggling from the acceleration, you begin to notice how much detail goes into the interior. It takes some time to learn the unique placement of the controls, but its a nice change of scenery from the rest of the automotive world. Sound and heat insulation have been taken to the next level, almost making us forget about Florida. One of our major gripes has been the touch screen, so this year it is larger with a much-improved menu. Amazing audio is by Meridian is rated at 825 watts. Four-zone climate control and piano black wood trim are just a few of the ways it will surpass your expectations. But there are a few things you need to know. Because the windows are flat and almost vertical, glare and reflections can be distracting at night. English roads are not as wide as ours, so the Land Rover isn't as wide as domestic SUVs. The quality overcomes this, but if you need maximum cargo space look elsewhere. The belt driven intake manifold makes more power than you will ever need, but it also makes for a thirsty drive. Rated at 14 mpg city and 19 mpg highway, only high octane can be used. The aluminum body rides on air suspension that can be adjusted on the fly. Mood lighting and massaging seats are a nice touch after a long day, and your kids will like the reclining rear seats. If you thought soft close doors and panoramic roofs were exclusive to Germany, the latest from Land Rover will surprise you. The window sticker added up to $109,190, which is a significant investment. But if you need the best in luxury along with the world's most capable off-road platform, your Range is waiting for you.View Range Rover For Sale

In the Driver's Seat: 2016 Lincoln MKX Review

We are living in an age where the Crossover is overtaking the midsize car. Twenty years ago the SUV sealed the fates of full size sedans, so who will emerge victorious at the end of the crossover wars? The first generation Lincoln MKX was easily identified as a fancy Ford Edge, but it has been completely redesigned for 2016. Our test model arrived with every possible option and without Matthew McConaughey. 2016 Lincoln MKXOn the outside the styling is not as avant-garde as others in this class, and the reasons why are rewarding. Many competitors offer tapered roof lines and edgy rear glass. This looks great on paper but rear visibility in a contemporary crossover is limited at best. This is first aspect that will make you consider Lincoln. Visibility in the MKX is the best we have encountered, from either full size SUVs or midsize offerings.First generations crossovers were simply sedans with taller suspension, but this new model has a proper ride height for its size. Optional 21" wheels will make tire choices limited and expensive, but the height inspires confidence and eliminates road noise. Since the engineers were given a clean sheet to work with, the latest in high strength steel was used to achieve a 5 Star safety rating from the NHTSA. Such a rating can't be found on featherweights, but Lincoln doesn't build light cars. 19 Speakers are hidden almost everywhereFor motivation we had 2.7 liters of EcoBoost V6. The same unit powers our 2015 F150 and it makes great power once the turbos kick in. Aside from having an ancient cartridge style oil filter mounted above the accessory belt, it has proven to be a thrifty and robust engine. A six speed automatic sends 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque to all wheels, as long as you run premium fuel.On the inside you are treated to heated and cooled front seats covered in Bridge of Weir leather. The absence of a shifter takes a few tries to get used to, but each gear has been incorporated into a vertical touch pad flanking the central screen. Not only concerned with aesthetics, the 2nd row folds almost flat to unlock 68.8 cubic feet of cargo room. To those accustomed to owning turbocharged cars, it should be no surprise that it might take a blip of full throttle to build boost. But driving the MKX is a delight. Adaptive steering and "Lincoln Drive Control" work together to isolate you from the road. After two weeks of commuting we have a few observations: The 21" wheels are overkill. A smaller wheel with more sidewall would make for a softer ride. Having 19 speakers from Revel Ultima audio is one of the best factory systems ever built. Anything but 93 octane will cause the computer to pull boost and timing, turning the EcoBoost into a slug. Over $15,000 of optional content includes many of the safety and technology features found as standard equipment on other brands. For $63,910 you will have a safe & luxurious ride with the ability to reach 24 mpg. It may represent the upper end of the crossover spectrum, but the MKX is a safe & solid investment. 2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 4x4 Review

The Jeep brand is synonymous with off-road capabilities, but they still manage to create vehicles that luxurious as can be. Case in point, the 2016 Cherokee Overland 4x4. This new SUV provides the drive with the ability to potentially do some rock climbing, use it as a daily drive and cruise in comfort. On the outside, this SUV is unmistakably a Jeep, featuring the iconic "boxy" body, grille and updated headlights. With the Overland edition, the main difference is the edition specific badging and the standard Bi-Xenon headlights. For wheels, ours was fitted with 18 x 7 inch polished aluminum wheels, shod with 225/60R18 BSW Touring tires.Inside is where this SUV enters a world of its own. Because we were given the Overland edition, we were greeted with a leather-trimmed interior. The brown leather covered just about every surface, even the instrument panel, center armrest, shift knob and door panels. As for technology, it was equipped with 7-inch display that you could use to control the Uconnect system and audio system that sent out sound to 9 speakers and subwoofer. When sitting in the Overland edition, you can tell that Jeep went above and beyond to create a more luxurious driving experience.I didn't get a chance to take the Jeep offroad, as Tampa, Florida isn't known for its dirt roads, but on the road I can say that it was a pleasure to drive. Its 3.2-liter V6 provided 295 hp, which was provided enough pep to keep you entertained. This SUV won't be winning races, but it will be there when you have to take roads less traveled. For fans of the Jeep brand and all thing luxurious, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 4x4 is an obvious winner.View All Jeeps For Sale

2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i Review

The crossover has become very popular in the United States over the recent years. Because of this, BMW has created their own take on the crossover: the X1. What they call a Sports Activity Vehicle, the X1 xDrive28i combines the size of an SUV with the handling and performance of their sporty cars. The example we had was powered by BMW's inline four-cyliner engine, equipped with their TwinPower turbos. At just 2.0-liters of displacement, it still generates 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This power combined with the X1's small stature and 8-speed automatic transmission (with manual shift mode) made for a sporty ride that you can't normally find in a full-size SUV. As for handling, BMW's Dynamic Stability Control came into play, which made cornering at higher speeds easier and safer. As I mentioned previously, the 2016 X1 is definitely not a full-size SUV, fitting in more with the crossover segment. But even though its not as big as its relatives, it still boasts 27-cubic-feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, with additional space underneath the floor. When it comes to space for the driver and passengers, I can't say that any of us that were in the car ran into any issues-- and that includes passengers over 6-feet tall.Being a BMW, there are plenty of options and technologies that a buyer can include in their car. First off is the Driver Assistance Package ($1,150) and Driver Assistance Package Plus ($700). The most important inclusion in these options would have to be the rear view camera. Other packages included the Cold Weather Package ($500), Premium Package ($3,250) and Technology Package ($2,500). I can definitely say that the most impressive options had to be the Driver Assistance Package and Premium Package, with the latter adding a multitude of create comforts like a panoramic moonroof and lumbar support. Those looking for a fun drive that will provide space when needed ought to look into getting a crossover. If you want to add some German flavor to your garage, look no further.View All X1s For Sale

In the Driver's Seat: 2016 Cadillac CT6

America has been without a full size Cadillac since the demise of the Fleetwood in 1996. Twenty years is a long time to keep your customers waiting, so GM's luxury division spent a boatload of time and money building the new CT6. My daily driver is a CTS-V, so I jumped at the opportunity for a few days of seat time.Since this is an all new model, here are the basics: Instead of GM's ubiquitous 3.6L V6 offered in almost every model, a new 3.0L was commissioned. For the sake of economy, it has tiny turbochargers and the ability to cruise in three cylinder mode on the highway. The transmission is an eight-speed auto that will probably be replaced by the 10-speed next year. With 404 hp and 400 lb-ft sent to all wheels, acceleration is quite remarkable. This new design makes all the power you need, and does so in a refined & delicate manner.Along with a new engine, this is GM's first sedan to offer rear wheel steering. It gives the car a tighter turning radius than its competitors, and makes highway maneuvering much more exciting. Another first is Super Cruise. GM's first entry into semi-autonomous driving, the vehicle proved capable of hands-free driving with stop/start cruise control.Rear seat passengers will delight in ionized air along with four zone climate control, while they are entertained by power retracting dual 10" rear screens. Each seat is capable of reclining with multiple massage modes. HDMI, USB, SD card, and 4G LTE hot spot allow rear seat passengers to connect streaming video devices such as ChromeCast or Amazon Fire along with a built in blu-ray player. Both screens can also mirror the front display.Enough about the back seat shenanigans, jumping behind the wheel of the CT6 is a rewarding experience. In slow speed city driving, the steering wheel requires almost no effort, and returns zero feedback. CT6 aims to disconnect all occupants from the outside world, and the active noise cancellation works wonders. Almost all expensive cars sold today have some form of Magnetic Ride Control suspension, but Cadillac wants you to know they invented it. The all-new Omega chassis uses multiple outer ball joints to separate acceleration from cornering loads, and the result is a very solid ride.We were sad to see it go, because CT6 made us rethink the notion of a full size American luxury car. The first car we have seen this year with zero options, everything is included for $88,460. Rated at 26 mpg highway, CT6 avoids the gas guzzler tax. This car shares little in common with any other American built sedan, so it is worth your while to experience it for yourself.Cadillac CT6s For Sale

In The Driver's Seat: 2016 Audi A3 Quattro Review

If you need a compact sedan with AWD, the Audi A3 Quattro is a sensible choice. We have had several examples of Audi’s smaller sedans and they never fail to disappoint. A completely new A3 is coming next year, but something tells us they won’t change the formula by much. To remind us of what is offered in their entry level, Audi sent us a fully loaded A3 Prestige for a week of quattro excitement. You might be quick to point out the shocking similarities to the Jetta, but there are differences in the details. You won’t find 19” titanium finished wheels, panoramic sunroof, or Bang & Olufsen audio in the VW. On our urban test loop, the A3 performed as expected. The latest version of VW’s 2.0L turbo four offers 220 hp and a chunky 258 lb-ft of torque. Sent to all wheels via the legendary quattro system once the turbo spools, it makes for a competent daily driver. The transmission is a six-speed dual clutch S tronic which is light years beyond the old automatics and the terrible CVT. Shifts are soft but quick, and shift points are well mapped to keep the turbo spinning.Yes the A3 has a starting price of $34,300, which is a bargain compared to other luxury sedans. But all of the features that allow it to compete on the world stage are bundled into the prestige package for only an additional $8,850. It includes lane departure, adaptive cruise control, and color instrument display. The notion that Ingolstadt will build you an A3 without this content is humorous, but other luxury brands are guilty of the same treachery. The MSRP measures in at $45,575, but that price is probably negotiable since the new generation will be arriving soon. For that price you will receive State-of-the-art safety and stability systems along with a quiet ride. If you need your back seats on a daily basis, the A4 might be a more practical option, but A3 is a solid choice for the commuter or college student. Stay tuned for the 2017 model in a month or two.A3 For Sale

In the Driver's Seat: 2016 GMC Canyon 4WD Diesel

Almost a year has gone by since GM sent us a new Chevrolet Colorado. The 3.6L V6 was completely capable of everything we asked of it, but in order to be a true work truck it needed more. GMC answered the call by dropping a 2.8L turbo diesel four into the 2016 Canyon, and sent it to us for a week of trucking fun.At first glance, the Canyon and Colorado are almost identical. It takes a keen eye to spot differences until you notice the exhaust pipe. The large diameter outlet is a dead giveaway to a new engine. We have driven the 3.6L V6 in every car that GM makes, and it doesn't disappoint. The problem is that it makes most of its power over 4,000 rpm. This is great for an ATS-V or Camaro, rewarding the driver with auditory praise. 2016 GMC Canyon SLT DieselBut the power band of the V6 is unsuited for hauling anything more than two kids or a jet ski. This is why diesel makes sense. The 2.8L makes 181 hp and a whopping 369 lb-ft of torque. Trucks have almost no need for high rpm horsepower, because they rely on torque to get things moving. After a week of daily driving, we come to the following realizations. Diesel is no longer the loud & obnoxious plague it once was. Clever gearing by GM's powertrain engineers in the transmission and differentials keeps the engine near max torque if needed. Our 4WD test model was rated at 29 mpg on the highway, and the 2WD is rated at 31. Hauling a family of four around all weekend does not incur anywhere near the dismal ratings of similar V8 trucks or SUVs. 2016 GMC Canyon All Terrain DieselWith left foot braking, your right foot is free to brake-boost the turbo for an enjoyable 4WD launch. To feel a midsize truck come out of the hole while such a vengeance is rewarding. To know that it can perform the same trick while towing 7,000 lbs is downright amazing. We bestowed it with a nickname of Diesel Canyon, because the notion of such a place is downright foreboding. After a week with this new GMC, nothing can be farther from the truth. This comfortable & quiet truck has more luxuries than any other midsize truck. Apple Carplay and a 4G LTE hot spot keep the kids connected, and USB ports can be found everywhere. Lane departure and collision alert work with stability control to keep you on the road.If you haven't considered owning a diesel, now is the perfect time to see if this new GMC is right for you. Diesel Canyon is what happens when Mad Max meets Minivan, and for $44,365 it is a fully loaded crew cab with more style than any other small truck. Stay tuned to Autofluence for more truck news & reviews. 2016 GMC Canyon SLE

In the Driver's Seat: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro RS Review

By now you have probably seen something new at your local Chevy dealer. Camaro is all new for '16 and we had a week to spend with a V6 version of the American classic. Each evolution of a model should try to be lighter and faster than its predecessor, and the new Camaro definitely measured up. The new lightweight Alpha chassis is shared with the Cadillac ATS and CTS. It uses more aluminum and less steel than the 2015, and the stiffer unibody allows for lower spring rates. Softer springs make for a comfy ride, but more on that later.Looking for something familiar, we popped the hood to find the latest version of GM's 3.6L V6. Now rated at 335 hp, it makes great use of the new 8-speed automatic transmission. This car will surprise you. Down shifts are quicker than most other automatics since many of the transmission's components are shared with Corvette. Using the paddles to drop a few gears will awaken the high revving six. The exhaust note is exotic and muscular, another plus for this mid-range model.Inside we expected a cheap plastic interior. My own 2002 SS has more molded plastic than Wal-Mart, so I was shocked at the quality of leather and contrast stitching. Gone are the embarrassing climate controls. Chevy now offers innovative vents with integrated temperature controls. Ambient lighting makes a return, with more color options and more hidden LEDs. Yes, the door panels and dash are enormous, but the quality and styling are much improved. Controls and buttons are more intuitive, and you can tell that engineers spent many late nights getting it right.A few of Camaro's old problems were still evident. This is a low car, and coupled with the short windows, it takes a few minutes to adjust the mirrors and seat for visibility. The A-pillars are chunky, making for a distracting diversion to your line of sight. Storage and back seat comfort could use some revisions, but they aren't priorities for the Camaro connoisseur. Even with those issues, we all agree that this is the best Camaro since 2002.Fuel mileage is rated at 19 city/28 highway, and the MSRP lands a hair under $40,000. Chevrolet is asking us to forgive them of the Camaros of the past. If you are in the market for a sporty daily driver, the 2016 Camaro RS is just the right blend of technology and fun.Chevrolet Camaros For Sale
