Shelby American SEMA Preview 2019

Summer may be over, but nobody told the team at Carroll Shelby International. That's why their team is bringing the heat to Las Vegas. Two new concepts will be unveiled this year, so here is a Shelby American SEMA Preview for 2019. Never content to let the Mustang rest, the Old Man would be proud of the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Dragon Snake. The name is taken from an option package on the original Shelby Cobra for sale. Dragon Snakes were Cobras built for drag racing, and the new one is no exception. Based on the new Shelby GT500, they worked with Ford Performance to cut all unnecessary weight. Borla helped design a new exhaust system, consolidating multiple catalytic converters into a pair of stainless high-flow units. The Shelby forged wheels are lighter and stronger, a must-have at the drag strip. The car makes over 800 horsepower and weighs less, so Ford fans might have another choice in the near future. Following the same formula, Shelby also arrived with a wild F-150. Taking the aesthetic and performance factors of the Crew Cab Shelby F-150, the Standard Cab model looks ready to race. Under the hood of the Shelby F-150 Super Snake Sport is a 755 horsepower supercharged 5.2L V8. Another custom Borla exhaust system will scare everyone in traffic, and the traction bars will keep the rear tires planted. Keep in mind that they are asking for everyone's feedback. Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be Raffled by JDRF

Type 1 Diabetes is a struggle for anyone who has it, and even more so for the little ones. That's why Ford has been donating special vehicles to support Juvenile diabetes research. Pulling out all the stops, this year a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be raffled by the JDRF. The Venom paint scheme is 1 of 1, and it was a combined effort between Penske and Protean. Second-place winners will receive a Ford VIP Experience for two at the 2020 Daytona 500. First-place will receive the quickest street-legal Mustang ever offered. It makes 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque from only 5.2L. Making supercar power from such small displacement makes it the most power and torque dense V8 in the world. Combined with massive brakes, it can run 0-100mph-0 in only 10.6 seconds. The drawing takes place Nov. 10th at the Ford Conference Center in Dearborn. Tickets are $10, and all the proceeds go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Click on the link below to purchase tickets, and stay with us for all your Ford news. Ken Block & Vaughn Gittin Jr. vs 2020 Shelby GT500

Do your rear tires evaporate on a weekly basis? If so, you might have a drifting addiction. Two of the most popular Mustang enthusiasts were invited to Goodwood try out Ford's latest creation, so let's watch Ken Block & Vaughn Gittin Jr versus a 2020 Shelby GT500. Uploaded to Ken's YouTube page, we are treated to an inside view of the paddock. What immediately stands out are the carbon fiber wheels. While they are not new to Mustang, the reduction in un-sprung weight offers a smooth ride. Speaking of the ride, it is controlled by the latest generation of GM's Magneride. Much like the 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray, this 4th generation system relies on electrical coils inside and outside the shocks. Vaughn knows how to handle a Mustang because his RTR builds arrive "Ready To Race". Such is the case with the new GT500, as it offers 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. The dual-clutch transmission is perfect for drifting, as power is not interrupted during the shift. Tell us what you think of this mean Mustang in the comments below, and stay with us for all your Hoonigan/RTR updates. 1965 Shelby Cobra To Be Auctioned at Mecum Las Vegas

A weight advantage can make or break your chances of winning. In a straight line, nothing else matters but all-out power. It was drag racing that made big block V8 engines popular. When it comes to road racing, a big block can be a big headache. That is how the small block powered Shelby Cobras were able to dominate on the track. Much like the Corvette Stingray, the Shelby Cobra was not originally designed to handle 650 lbs of V8 on the front end. The 427 powered examples are fun, but it takes a very experienced driver to control them in the corners. That is why the 289 Cobras have seen a resurgence in popularity. Only a few years ago they weren't considered as collectible as their big-block brethren, but since Mr. Shelby's untimely departure the original examples are bringing massive returns on the auction block. That is why Mecum is offering CSX2549 at their Las Vegas event. One of the rarest examples, it was built with a C4 automatic transmission. Carroll Shelby's personal cars and only a handfull of others were built as automatics. This car was used as a display for Shelby's Hi-Performance Motors, his dealership in El Segundo, California. A fully documented history shows it was most recently owned by Cobra collector Jerry Heasley, who commissioned Wayne Davis to return it to showroom condition. From seat covers to the wire wheels, most of this car is factory original. The high-revving 289 and the indestructible C4 are a recipe for fun and comfort in this classic Cobra. Cobra 101: A Brief Breakdown of the Shelby Cobra’s Lineage

The Shelby Cobra’s shape is instantly recognizable by anyone, even those who aren’t well versed in automotive history. The sweeping curves of the AC body and muscular stance imparted by its more sporting nature are dead giveaways to its purpose. But, even for those of us who know a thing or two about cars, differentiating Cobras can be a little tricky. Thankfully we have an expert like Cobra guru Lance Stander of Superformance to help guide us through the model range. Superformance 289 Slabside Cobra The first — and arguably prettiest — of the Cobras is known as the Slabside. The slabside Cobra gets its unusual appellation from its lack of fender flares. This is arguably the purest version of the Cobra formula of big American engine in a tiny British sports car. The slabside is easy to spot thanks to its lack of a hood scoop and a rear exit, undercar exhaust. Also notable is the fact that the slabside has both bumpers and bumperettes. It’s a low, elegant car and thanks to its more balanced attitude due to its smaller engine, it’s a pleasure to drive. That fun and easygoing demeanor makes the slabside a favorite for those owners who plan to do a great deal of touring or other extended drives. It’s a relatively comfortable car and thanks to its solid little engine, a dead reliable one as well. Shelby Cobra 289 FIA When Carroll Shelby decided to take the Cobra racing in Europe, specifically at Le Mans, he ran into a few snags with the legendarily persnickety FIA or Federation Internationale de l’Automobile. Their rules at the time mandated that all cars competing at Le Mans be equipped with a speedometer, something that was (and remains) typically omitted in race cars. Shelby protested but when he found the FIA unwilling to budge on the subject, he installed a speedo way over on the passenger side of the dash where it would be nearly unreadable to the driver. The FIA also mandated that the trunk be able to hold a suitcase which the Cobra was unable to do. Shelby’s solution to this was to put a suitcase into the trunk and smash the lid down so the corners would dent out the soft aluminum decklid. He then has his team bang out what would become known as the car’s dimples so the suitcase would just barely fit. There were other practical concerns too such as adding a roll hoop and wider tires. Of course, wider tires necessitated fender flares and fender flares are universally cool. The FIA Cobra also features an undercar exhaust but this time it exits to the side directly in front of the rear wheels. Wider tires came with bigger wheels and thus better brakes. Better brakes demand more cooling and so they added ducting. The FIA Cobra with its screaming 289 and race car looks remains an incredibly popular choice for Superformance buyers who are looking for the ultimate driving experience. Shelby Cobra 427 Roadster Eventually though, Carroll Shelby got the idea that what the Cobra needed was more power, so he somehow managed to shoehorn a 427 cubic inch Ford V8 into the Cobra body. The fenders swelled and the proportions grew in order to wrap around that massive engine. The first 427 that came along was the Roadster. These cars lacked the 289 FIA car’s race car touches, so gone was the hood scoop and roll bar. The 427 Roadster added creature comforts like an ashtray and a glove box. It still had an undercar exhaust and like the original slabside, it exited at the rear of the car. It also retained the slabside’s rear bumper. Superformance MkIII The Cobra that most people think of when they think of Cobras is the outrageously muscular and intense looking 427 S/C. This car with its exaggerated curves, big side pipes, and hood scoop leaves no mystery as to what its ultimate purpose is. The 427 S/C comes equipped with coilover suspension to help manage the added weight that came with the move to the larger engine and tame some of the cars wayward handling characteristics. The S/C also loses the Roadster’s ashtray and rear bumper. It comes with a roll hoop for safety and not much else. This is the ultimate expression of the Cobra formula and there is nothing on the road that comes even close to driving one of these quickly on a race track or in a canyon. Original Cobras of any type are rare and essentially priceless now. The fact is that Carroll Shelby simply didn’t build that many in the grand scheme of things. The great thing about a company like Superformance is that they’ve made the cars accessible and they’ve done it in a way that doesn’t compromise quality or the driving experience. The Superformance continuation cars are so close to the originals that Mr. Shelby himself even gave them his seal of approval. Even if you don’t want to stick exactly to the original specs, Superformance is happy to help you modify your Cobra to be the car of your dreams and registering the cars is easier now than ever before thanks to the Superformance-backed Low Volume Manufacturers Bill which makes getting a title and registration simple no matter what state you’re in. The Shelby Cobra is an essential piece of Americana. It represents one man’s quest to build the best with the least and it changed the course of automotive history forever. Seeing one on the road is always special but seeing one in your garage is better still. Give Superformance a call and make your Cobra dreams come true. Learn more

First Cobra Ever Heading to RM Sotheby's Monterey Auction

Mr. Shelby owned many cars over the years, but nothing in his estate comes close to the first production Cobra. Used as a test platform for new parts and as a press car for journalists, chassis CSX 2000 is unique in many ways. While later cars received the 289 V8, this car is powered by its original 260ci engine. Leaving this car in original condition is like having a time capsule back to racing in the early 60's.(Also Check Out: DragonSnake Shelby Cobra Sells for $1.3 Million)It will be the centerpiece of RM's Monterey auction which is taking place August 19-20. Offered for sale by the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust, it will be joined by a 1965 Cobra 427, chassis CSX 3178 which is also offered without reserve. These cars are probably the most well-known Cobras, as they have been reviewed in countless car magazines, Shelby advertisements, and the centerpieces of the Shelby HQ in Las Vegas. What makes the big block car unique is that it left the factory with an automatic transmission to be Carroll's weekend cruiser. Other lots from the Trust will be a 1999 Series 1 Roadster followed by the spunky 1986 Dodge Shelby GLHS. Mr. duPont has been known to buy cars at this event, so we hope he brings at least one of these back to Florida. Stay tuned as Monterey week approaches, as we will have real-time social media from the event.

50th Anniversary Cobra Daytona Coupe Series Announced

Fifty years ago, Carroll Shelby and team won the FIA World Championship, mostly thanks to the sleek lines of their “Daytona Coupe.” Essentially a hard top version of the Cobra roadster, it allowed for higher top speeds and more stability thanks to extensive aerodynamic testing. Last year Shelby American celebrated the anniversary of the Roadster, building a limited number of anniversary cars. This year, as announced in a July 15 press release and July 16 Facebook post, they are offering 50 “Continuation Coupes” in either aluminum or fiberglass. This is indeed historic, as it’s the first time Shelby has offered a continuation coupe in aluminum. Delivered as a rolling chassis, they will feature sequential serial numbers from CSX9950 to CSX9999 and arrive with modern disc brakes. The base aluminum Shelby Daytona Coupe is set at $349,995, while the fiberglass version starts at $179,995. Neither price includes the drivetrain. (See Also: Shelby American 50th Anniversary FIA Cobra) Both versions will be unveiled at McCall’s Motorsports Revival on August 12 as part of Monterey Car Week. We will have live updates from Monterey, so stay tuned to Autofluence for Shelby news and updates. In the meantime, find your own Shelby from our exclusive listings.
