McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Spyker Unveils Ultra-Exclusive C8 Preliator XXV

At The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, multiple-times defunct and revived coachbuilder Spyker returned to life once more. Almost exactly 25 years after the most recent reboot, in the year 2000, Spyker showed a new model dubbed the C8 Preliator XXV with an updated design, powertrain, and of course, extensive customization options. And unlike so many show cars that automakers push onto pedestals at The Quail, Spyker purposefully brought a running, driving vehicle to double down on the revitalized company’s production intent. Ahead of the debut, Spyker invited duPont REGISTRY to the firm’s new headquarters in Amsterdam while the Quail car’s build remained in an early phase of assembly. Photos of the workshop were not allowed, understandably, but after witnessing a new vision for power and performance, not to mention collectability and craftsmanship, Spyker’s return seems ripe for today’s era of ultra-exclusivity and exuberant personalization. Fans of early-2000s supercars will remember the original C8, such a uniquely styled two-seater from the tiny Dutch automaker. Straddling the line between rolling art and serious performance machine, with intricate handmade metal surfaces and a proven Audi powertrain, the first C8 then went on to a total of three different variants, with 270 units built and even a Le Mans racing era (pictured above) – before an absolutely stunning attempt by Spyker to break into Formula 1 (below). That quick ramp-up shouldn’t be too surprising, as Spyker’s lineage traces back to 1880 when Spujker(Dutch spelling)-built horsedrawn carriages for everything from public transportation to creations ornate enough that they remain in use by the royal family of the Netherlands to this day. By 1898, the company transitioned to building its first motorcar with a Benz engine, and by 1903 the world’s first six-cylinder four-wheel-drive car with a whopping – for the time – total of 60 horsepower. A Spyker 14/18 HP model raced 15,000 kilometers from Peking to Paris in 1907, and secured quite possibly the world’s first automotive sponsorship by Louis Vuitton for the effort (below). When Dutch entrepreneur Victor Muller acquired Spyker’s naming rights for the new millennium, he perhaps dove headlong into racing too quickly – especially with the money pit of F1, which essentially ground the business to a halt and led to a series of increasingly public failures to build future roadgoing cars, including a super-SUV concept well before that segment exploded in popularity over the past decade or so. But now, after many years of protracted litigation, Muller has taken the helm once more and believes the time has come to right Spyker’s very public wrongs. “I think in the past 10 years, this market has changed more than in the 50 years before,” Muller stated. “If there was ever a time to make Spyker into a profitable business, it's now, because of changes in the marketplace and to collectability of cars, the demand which has gone through the roof.” The new C8 Preliator XXV clearly evolves upon the styling of the original, but beneath the skin Muller explained that 85% of the car’s kinematics required overhauling. No wonder, as the new drivetrain boasts up to 800 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, again sourced from Audi. The engine will arrive in a stock state of tune for American customers, and Spyker will only sell the new model with an old-fashioned six-speed manual borrowed from the V10 Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo siblings. No automatic option, no hybrid, no all-wheel-drive. At just 3,251 pounds, the new C8 should be quite the analog affair. “We don't want big screens in a Spyker, we have no interest in making a Tesla interior for it. On the contrary, likewise, we have no interest in making a fake gearbox,” Muller quipped, referring to an infamous recent PR fiasco. “My customers want to be able to blow up their own engine if they don’t shift the right way. They feel the gearbox, they are absolutely in direct contact with the engine, and if they make a mistake, they pay the price. And if you don't want to make that mistake, buy something else, right?” Further details include updated Recaro seats, R8-sourced carbon-ceramic brakes, and 3D-printed suspension uprights. Lotus suspension components still underpin the platform, yet the finer touchpoints also receive just as much attention. Each car requires eleven leather hides, and a single craftsman hand-stitches each steering wheel for four hours. Rather than switching to carbon fiber for the body, Spyker stuck with the more intricate hand-wheeled aluminum. Hence the inflated price tag, now well into seven figures – yet despite past drama and future question marks, Muller boasted that Spyker already sold 18 cars without a single customer so much as seeing one of the 25 planned allocations in the flesh. Muller’s vision clearly expands far beyond the immaculate greens of The Quail, or even the C8 Preliator XXV. That super SUV? Still on the table, along with the search for a massive new facility to support expanded production, Monterey Car Week served as more than simply testing the waters. At least in part because Spyker also recently brought on funding from Ukrainian blockchain and cryptocurrency founder of WhiteBIT and W Group – and supercar collector in his own right – Volodymyr Nosov to support Muller’s latest passion project and hopefully quash any lingering doubts about whether Spyker can sustain a similar business model on the strength of such palpable enthusiasm alone. “I have to finish what I started 26 years ago,” Muller emphasized, with audible emotion in his voice. “And that is to make Spyker into a profitable business that my heirs will be happy to have, rather than a business that failed somewhere along the line.” Images by Michael Van Runkle

2009 Spyker C8 Laviolette Listed For Sale

Is Spyker Coming Back?

The 2000s saw the revival of a historic name in the automotive industry, Spyker, with the creation of unique and iconic Dutch supercars. While there were only a handful made, they were well-known thanks to their over-the-top design and flashy appointments. The manufacturer also featured several racing efforts and took ownership of Saab, but many of its ambitions, like a Super SUV and a second, smaller sports car, never quite came to fruition. Come the late 2010s, Spyker all but faded from the automotive industry. A recent announcement from the brand, in October 2025, stated that founder Viktor Muller “reached a settlement, securing all Spyker IP rights,” and that new plans would be revealed soon thereafter. Spyker: The Forgotten Dutch Supercar Manufacturer

A Dutch automotive manufacturer, Spyker is actually one of the oldest names in the automotive industry, tracing its roots back to the late 1800s when it made the “Golden Coach” that is still in use by the Dutch monarchy today, and made automobiles even before the turn of the century. The original Spyker company would go on to make race cars like the one that finished second in the Peking to Paris competition. During World War I, Spyker would also manufacture aircraft involved in the war, and a motto for the brand was coined in Latin: “Nulla Tenaci invia est via,” which translates to “For the tenacious no road is impassable.” The original Spyker went dormant in the 1920s, but when it was revived in 1999, those two milestones would serve as major inspirations for the modern-day Spyker brand. Spyker came back in the early 2000s with a supercar called the C8 Spyder. The open-top, mid-engined supercar featured iconic design details inspired by the aircraft of Spyker’s past, like the aircraft-inspired logo, the “Aeroblade” wheels, visible riveting on the exteriors of some models, and an interior design concept with a milled aluminum dashboard, quilted upholstery, and switchgear reminiscent of vintage aircraft. The C8 Spyder, and its coupe variant, the Laviolette, were both powered by a 4.2-liter V8 engine from Audi, and a twin-turbo version, with the added suffix of T, was later added to the lineup for added performance. Adding motorsport efforts to its ambitions, Spyker spent part of the 2006 season and the 2007 season competing in Formula 1, with a team that would eventually become Force India, and the manufacturer also made grand touring versions of the C8 to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Spyker Squadron factory racing team. Throughout the 2000s and even into the 2010s, Spyker, and especially its co-founder Victor Muller, showcased incredible ambition. One of those ambitions was a concept for a Super SUV, the D12/D8 Peking-to-Paris that predated the cohort of high-performance SUVs we know today from brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and more. The Spyker C12 LaTurbie, and a Zagato-bodied counterpart, the Spyker C12 Zagato, would have brandished a production mid-engined application of the Volkswagen Group W12 if they came to fruition, a prospect that the Volkswagen W12 supercar made enticing. Spyker eventually replaced the first generation of the C8 with the C8 Aileron in 2009, and a concept for the C8 Aileron Spyder also emerged. In 2010, Spyker acquired Saab from General Motors, with the 2011 Saab 9-5 actually being created under Spyker ownership. After acquiring Saab, though, Spyker ran into serious financial trouble as a manufacturer, resulting in the bankruptcy of Saab Automobile. That didn’t stop Spyker from creating another concept car, however, with the B6 Venator concept being revealed at Geneva in 2013. However, Spyker went bankrupt in late 2014, announcing in 2015 that it successfully exited the moratorium it had, and revealing a new concept, a successor to the C8 Aileron in early 2016, the C8 Preliator. In 2017, a commemorative version of the Aileron, the C8 Aileron LM85, was revealed, and it was powered by a supercharged 4.2-liter Audi V8, inspired by the C8 Laviolette LM85 of the past, and limited to just three units. Since then, not much has happened for Spyker, but an intriguing announcement came rather recently, in October of 2025. That announcement said that Victor Muller, the co-founder of Spyker, had reached an agreement regarding the intellectual property rights of the company. In the announcement, Muller stated that the agreement meant that “we can now continue to focus on the future of our beautiful Spyker brand and, in particular, the production of meticulously hand-built Spyker super sports cars.” For enthusiasts, hope is still alive that Spyker may return with a new cohort of supercars, but there hasn’t been any more news since the October announcement.
