McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche’s electric performance hero takes on the drag strip. After introducing the Taycan as the first all-electric model to come from the Porsche manufacturer, the model was given a second generation, which included a new benchmark-setting performance variant of the Taycan: the Taycan Turbo GT. With over 1,000 horsepower, the Taycan Turbo GT earned the distinction of being the most powerful production roadgoing model from Porsche when it was introduced. Along with that, the Taycan Turbo GT snagged multiple records on racetracks across the globe since its introduction, and now, it’s set yet another one at the Sydney Dragway. Taking on a venue where heavily modified vehicles with massive engines usually shine, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s performance at the Sydney Dragway is yet another achievement that proves the Turbo GT’s engineering excellence and changes the expectations of electric vehicles in the performance world. The 2026 Porsche Taycan takes The Rolling Stones’ advice. Elegant, sleek, neutral, and ominous, there’s nothing quite like a black luxury car. Even as electrification and rapid innovation rapidly change the automotive industry, the popularity of black luxury and performance cars has remained consistent for decades, and Porsche’s lineup consists of some of the best examples of cars that look great in black. Porsche’s electric performance icon, the Taycan, is now offered in a Black Edition for the 2026 model year. Fiercely faithful to its name, the Taycan Black Edition celebrates the luxurious elegance of black cars. Porsche’s electric performance machine becomes a Hollywood star. The Taycan is Porsche’s first all-electric model, which has now entered its second generation, with improved performance and revised design, building on the success of the high-performance luxury electric sports car. However, the Taycan Turbo is gracing a new stage, as a star in a new film: Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Alongside the electric sports car are actors Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., returning for the Den of Thieves sequel as detective Big Nick and heist genius Donnie Wilson. As a film about a perfectly-planned heist, the perfect car was the Porsche Taycan, thanks to it being practical, luxurious, powerful, athletic, and distinctly, silent. Christian Gudegast, the film’s writer and director, knew that the Porsche Taycan was the perfect car for the job after his research, even before he knew that Porsche would agree. Five cars were provided by Porsche for filming, including one that was controlled by a stunt driver on the roof. With two months to implement the modifications needed for the stunt cars and test them, the port of Tenerife needed to be closed in the summer of 2023 for testing. Porsche Reveals New Taycan 4 & Taycan GTS Variants

Porsche rounds off the new Taycan generation. Despite being a futuristic electric vehicle, and Porsche’s first production all-electric model, the Porsche Taycan has been around for long enough that the manufacturer has given it a significant update and a second generation, which has now ushered in a new performance pinnacle for the Taycan in the form of the record-breaking Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. However, Porsche has now added more variants to the second-generation Taycan lineup, including a GTS model, and the new Porsche Taycan 4. GTS, short for Gran Turismo Sport, has been a highly successful moniker for Porsche, spurring models throughout Porsche’s lineup that combine high performance with luxury and driving pleasure. The new second-generation Porsche Taycan GTS seeks to do the same, positioned between the Porsche Taycan 4S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo. When using launch control, the new Taycan GTS boasts 690 horsepower, 100 more than the previous generation model. A boost of 93 horsepower is also available with a push-to-pass function like that of the Taycan Turbo GT. Available as a sedan or a Sport Turismo station wagon, the new Taycan GTS will get from 0-60 in just 3.1 seconds, with the sedan completing a quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds, besting the last generation by 0.7 seconds. Its combination of sporty character and luxury is further exemplified with a wide range of design options, a standard Bose surround sound system, and optional rear-axle steering. Meanwhile, the new Porsche Taycan 4 boasts the Taycan’s impressive efficiency, combined with the practical benefits of all-wheel drive. It boasts 402 horsepower, or 429 with Launch Control, and it can get from 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds. The new Porsche Taycan 4 carries a starting MSRP of $103,300. The GTS, towards the other end of the spectrum, starts at $147,900 for the sedan, and $149,800 for the Sport Turismo. Both are set to arrive at dealers in the first quarter of 2025, with Slate Grey Neo, Pale Blue Metallic, and Purple Sky Metallic being added to the color palette. Porsche’s pinnacle performance EV gets another record. The Porsche Taycan is the inaugural all-electric model from Porsche, showing off immense power and futuristic performance ability from the legendary luxury performance car manufacturer. However, the model has now entered its second generation, and with it came the new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which represents the racing-focused peak of Porsche’s all-electric performance. It came on the scene with a splash, setting record lap times on revered racing circuits like the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in California, and the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. Even with incredible lap times to its name already, the Taycan Turbo GT isn’t quite done yet. The high-performance electric grand tourer is available with a Weissach Package like Porsche’s revered GT cars, and with the Weissach Package, Porsche secured yet another record lap time for the Taycan Turbo GT, in an entirely new continent. Taking on one of Asia’s premier circuits, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT achieved success on the 3.4-mile Shanghai International Circuit. Lars Kern, Porsche’s revered development driver was behind the wheel, and with his racing expertise and the Taycan Turbo GT’s groundbreaking performance combined, a record 2:11.28 lap time was recorded on the Formula 1 circuit. That time makes the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT the fastest series production car to lap the Shanghai International Circuit, marking the track’s first officially recognized lap record. The record was achieved on a track that was dampened by intermittent rain, with the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT emerging triumphant thanks to its incredible dynamics, especially in challenging portions of the track like the “snail curve.” The acceleration also proved impressive, as the car eclipsed 180 mph on the track during lap record attempts. The lap record was achieved with the car using its “attack mode,” which adds extra power temporarily, and with optional Pirelli Trofeo RS tires wrapping the wheels. Safety equipment was added inside for the record attempt runs. With its record-breaking lap time in Shanghai, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT travels the globe to showcase its performance domination. Porsche celebrates Korea with a bespoke new EV. Porsche’s Sonderwunsch department consistently showcases the limitless potential of its bespoke creations, which range from custom interiors to historical homages and artistically unique color combinations. One of the latest Sonderwunsch creations is a new bespoke iteration of the Porsche Taycan Turbo, created as an homage to the country of Korea, where Porsche is celebrating 10 years of its Porsche Korea subsidiary. Dubbed the new Porsche Taycan Turbo K-Edition, the new car is exclusively available in Korea, and its design was created as a collaboration between Sonderwunsch, Porsche Korea, and the Style Porsche department. It features special touches like a special logo inspired by a historicl royal Korean stamp, which reads ‘Taycan’ in traditional Korean characters, as well as a special skyline graphic on the active rear wing, combining the modern city skyline of Seoul with the silhouette of a traditional Korean “hanok” house. The special graphics are hand-finished, and featured throughout the interior and exterior of the bespoke vehicle. The new Taycan Turbo K-Edition is available in five different colors: Ruby Red Metallic from the Paint to Sample Plus palette, Oak Green Metallic, Ipanema Blue Metallic, Macadamia Metallic and Alex Grey. Special Mission-E-style wheels and Turbonite finishes set it apart elegantly, as well. Olea Club leather upholsters the interior, in Basalt Black with Ruby Red Metallic, Ipanema Blue Metallic or Alex Grey exterior colors, and in Truffle Brown with Macadamia Metallic and Oak Green Metallic exterior colors. Formula E’s grand finale was graced with the presence of another electric performance masterpiece. As a luxury performance car manufacturer, Porsche is at the forefront of electrification, with a growing lineup of all-electric models showcasing incredible power, performance, technology, and innovation. The first and most prominent is the Porsche Taycan, which took a road trip to Formula E’s London finale to showcase its efficiency, luxury, and performance. The road trip started in Zurich, traveling a scenic route that featured some of Europe’s most beautiful vistas. The Taycan’s excellent design proved useful immediately. Rain early on in the trip was easily beaded off the windshield thanks to the Taycan’s excellent aerodynamics, which, of course, also bolstered the electric performance sedan’s efficiency. The new Taycan also boasts range-boosting aerodynamic wheels and a lighter yet more efficient battery, imbuing it with as much as over 400 miles of range. The first charging stop, 285 miles after the journey began in Zurich, was in Haudiomont, France. The stop also served as a quick coffee break, with only 18 minutes of fast charging needed to bring the battery to 95 percent. It isn’t much longer until the Taycan is showcased at the Formula E finale in London, where Porsche combines racing-focused and production-focused EV technology to achieve innovation. Regenerative braking is a technique shared between both race cars and series-production electric vehicles to increase efficiency and performance. In addition, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT gets to showcase track performance as Formula E’s safety car. It’s the most powerful safety car in the history of FIA racing, and its time on the track will add to the car’s performance ability. The Formula E finale resulted in Pascal Wehrlein becoming the tenth season champion in the series. Available to order now in the United States, the 2025 Porsche Taycan starts at $99,400. However, for the top of the line Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, prices start at a much higher $211,700. To break the ice, ROC’s resident stunt driver Terry Grant and a Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo decided to put on a record-setting show. MUST READ: Porsche 911 Turbo S vs. Taycan Turbo On Track What Terry Grant did was, according to the Guinness Book of World Records complete the highest number of donuts in an electric vehicle on ice, with 69 donuts carved into the snow. This was a much greater challenge than it seemed because as the Taycan kicked up ice during its donuts, an ingenious safety feature in the car turned into a roadblock when it came to doing donuts. As the ice began to accumulate on the underside of the car, it would activate a sensor that caused the car to behave as if it were involved in a serious accident and shut down.
