End of the Line: The Car That Made Tesla a Global Powerhouse Is Officially Gone

Supercars and exotics are our bread and butter here at duPont REGISTRY, and EVs don't usually command as much attention. But yesterday at its Fremont factory, Tesla marked the end of the line for the Model S and Model X with a Signature Edition delivery event, and this is a moment that cannot be ignored. Why? Because it was the Model S that got the ball rolling for electric cars in the modern era, while also making high-performance accessible to the masses. Its impact on the auto industry cannot be overstated and can be mentioned in the same breath as the Ford Model T or VW Beetle. Elon Musk took to the stage alongside Tesla's chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, and Engineering Lead Lars Moravy to mark the occasion. The Signature Edition runs just 350 cars: 250 Model S and 100 Model X, each priced at $159,420 and available by invitation only (sold out). Every car wears an exclusive Garnet Red paint, gold Tesla badges front and rear, a numbered dashboard plaque, and a white Alcantara interior with gold piping. Now EVs may be mainstream today, but looking back, the electric car has existed for well over a century. It competed with steam power in the earliest days of the automobile, and then gasoline won, and the world moved on. For most of the 20th century, the EV remained an R&D project, and early cars were far from being conventional or cool. Think GM EV1 or the infamous G-Wiz across the pond. Nobody wanted one, and Franz even referred to a Golf cart. Tesla changed that, but the story of this change in perception did not begin with the Model S. It started with the original Roadster back in 2008, a low-volume, high-ticket sports car that was built around a Lotus Elise platform, serving one purpose: proving electric cars could be desirable. The Roadster also served a strategic function, as the Revenue from that car funded the development of the mass-market product that followed. That car was the Model S, a low-slung four-door sedan that looked conventional from a distance and genuinely futuristic up close. It arrived in 2012 and made plugging in feel aspirational rather than compromising. Musk understood that performance alone would not be enough to convince skeptics, and so he built the infrastructure to back the cars up, which is why the Supercharger Network grew alongside them, which is now open to EVs from other makes, including the likes of Porsche, BMW, and Lucid, to name a few. <- Gallery -> In that respect, Tesla operated more like Apple than any traditional automaker, controlling the hardware, software, and ecosystem simultaneously. That network has since grown into one of the most expansive EV charging systems in the world, now open to vehicles from other manufacturers entirely. To really drive my point home on Musk’s impact on the auto industry and mass adoption of EVs, here was a CEO who was willing to go bankrupt if a rival company built a better car. Tesla subsequently even made its patents public. The Model X followed in 2015, falcon-wing doors and all, and together the two vehicles ran for 14 and 11 years, respectively, before yesterday's send-off. Combined, both nameplates moved roughly 750,000 units across their production runs. Tesla replaced 97% of the components across that period, meaning the final cars share almost nothing with the originals beyond the name. Over-the-air updates meant older cars improved after purchase rather than aging out, and Tesla has always positioned itself as a tech company first, pioneering several technologies over the years, ranging from scaling battery production and motor performance to self-driving and so much more. Both cars also democratized high performance. Plaid-level acceleration had historically belonged mostly to supercars and exotics, but Tesla handed that same performance to anyone who could afford a premium sedan or crossover, and the industry has not recovered from that shift. Also, looking at the market share, when the Model S launched, EVs accounted for less than one percent of global new car sales. Last year, those figures peaked at roughly eight percent, and in China is well over half the market. On the collector case, Musk believes that the values of Model S and Model X will rise because the autonomous future makes driver-operated cars a finite and shrinking category. We don't know how far out that is, but the original Tesla Roadster is already part of the collector car conversation, and here's how much it hammered at not too long ago on duPont REGISTRY Live. Tesla Tows 787

Tesla Model X Tows Boeing 787 For Guinness World Record

Have you noticed gas prices lately? Tesla has, so they decided to remind us of what their Model X is capable of. The world forgot about electric cars around a century ago due to cheap fuel. Just like how Space X reminded the aerospace industry that kerosene rockets are incredibly cheaper than hydrogen. Elon Musk thinks outside the box, and that is how they were able to tow a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. As the Flag Carrier for Australia, Qantas is the largest airline in the world. Being the biggest means staying ahead of the curve, and what they have done is sending shivers through the aircraft tug industry. Those tiny workhorses that push and pull planes to their gate are not required to meet emissions laws, so battery power seems like a no-brainer.Porsche Cayenne Turbo S Tows Jumbo JetThe Model X P100D is rated at 518 horsepower and 713 lb-ft of torque. Torque is multiplied in the differential before it reaches the wheels. Your car probably has a 2.73 or maybe even a 3.73 gear ratio. The Model X has 9.34 gears. This means it has the potential to send 6,659 lb-ft to the tarmac. Officially rated to tow 5,000 lbs, it seems to have no problems moving the 244,000 lb Dreamliner, which set the Guinness World Record for the "heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle."Please don't try this at home, Boeing will void your warranty. Tesla Model X Released: World's Quickest SUV

After years of anticipation and impressive growth from Tesla, the California manufacturer has introduced, at last, the Model X. At 8 pm Pacific time last night, Sept. 29, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk took the stage and announced the official launch of the completely electric SUV. It's incredibly powerful, incredibly safe and another step in a total revolution of the transportation industry."We've proved that any car can go electric," Musk stated, then listing off the already achieved accomplishments of the marque. The Roadster proved a sports car could run off of a battery, the Model S has proven that a battery-powered sedan can be more powerful than supercars and the Model X brings that truth to the SUV segment. The impressive and popular Ludicrous mode launched for the Model S July 20 is available in the Model X P90D, propelling the seven-seater from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Without the upgrade, the P90D can still reach 60 from a standstill in 3.8 seconds, and the 90D version in 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph.CNET had the chance to take one for a drive, and shared a video of their experience on YouTube Sept. 29. Their conclusion? It's incredibly reminiscent of the Model S, but with much better visibility. The falcon wings make accessing the back seats much more comfortable, and their equipped with sensors to guarantee they don't hit the cars next to you or a ceiling above when they open. And, it's reported to be incredibly safe. In his reveal, a graph showing the Model X's probability of overall injury as being approximately 7 percent - to receive a five-star rating from the NHTSA, a car's probability must be 10 percent or less.As of right now, only the first five customers to order one will receive their cars, and those who have not reserved one yet will have quite some time to wait before receiving theirs. There are 30,000 pre-orders for Tesla to get through, and new reservations aren't expected to receive delivery until late 2016.(See Also: Tesla Drone Design Concept)Keep in mind, the only version currently available is the Signature Edition, which is priced at $132,000. Though Tesla still has yet to announce an official date for when the Model X will begin production, it seems as if it isn't far away at all. It's been a rocky road for the Model X, which has had its officially release day pushed back on more than one occasion, but as Motor Authority shared today, it seems that customers who were the first to reserve one have been contacted by Tesla, and are beginning to design their cars through an online configurator."In June, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the Model X would be out within 'three or four' months," Motor Authority said. "The current estimate for the start of delivery is late September." And as they found on the Tesla Motors Club forum, that estimate might not be far off.Customers who placed a reservation through Tesla's website, which required a $5,000 deposit, have shared screenshots of the configurator on the forum, along with a full list of standard equipment and other options that are available, as well as pricing. From what they've shared, the base price for a Signature Edition Model X, also called the Model X P90D, with the Ludicrous speed option is $134,5000.Standard equipment on the Model X will include the Falcon Wing doors with build in sensors; an automatically retracting rear spoiler; rear accessory hitch; maps and navigation with real time traffic updates; free long distance travel on the Supercharger network; 8-year, infinite mile battery and drive unit warranty; keyless entry and more.(See Also: Hilarious Ludicrous Mode Reactions in the Tesla Model S P90D)Check out the photos of the Model X's projected final form below, visit the forum for more details and let us know in the comments whether you'd like to get your hands on one of these electric crossover SUVs.Teslas For Sale Gallery (Source: MotorAuthority, Tesla Motors Club Forum, Tesla) See More Tesla News
