Volkswagen Just Built an EV That Barely Needs a Battery

Mission Efficiency traveled nearly 800 miles on a single charge.

Electric Vehicles have come a long way from being bizarre alternatives to gas-powered cars. Early EVs were defined by limited range and long charging times, but the conversation has shifted as OEMs are discovering new ways to squeeze more miles from every kilowatt-hour. Volkswagen once explored extreme efficiency with the XL1, a lightweight plug-in hybrid that became one of the most economical production cars ever built. Now, Volkswagen is bringing that drive for efficiency into the electric age with Mission Efficiency, a near-production prototype that has already set three records.Volkswagen took Mission Efficiency on a 794.34-mile road trip from its development center in Wolfsburg to Vienna, passing through Poznań, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Throughout the trip, the prototype averaged 42.08 mph and reached a top speed of 86 mph, using 7.51 kWh/62 miles including charging losses, or 6.89 kWh/60 miles without them. Its 54.9-kWh battery was charged only once, and the car still showed 102 miles of range after its arrival. That earned Mission Efficiency a third record for being the most economical near-production electric car in its class.Volkswagen admits that aerodynamics play a huge role in the car’s performance. Mission Efficiency uses a long, low roofline and teardrop-shaped body, along with a small frontal area, active cooling flaps, covered rear wheels, an enclosed underbody and flush door handles. Volkswagen says the combination reduces consumption by more than 30% compared with other VW EVs at speeds above 50 mph. Mission Efficiency uses the 99-kW electric motor and battery from the ID. Polo, while its lightweight body uses aluminum with carbon-fiber-reinforced and aramid composites. A 370-watt solar system integrated into the glass roof and trunk lid can contribute up to 30 kilometers of additional range per day under favorable conditions. Volkswagen’s Mission Efficiency may remain a prototype for now, but its message is pretty straightforward: the next big step in EV range may not come from building bigger batteries. It could come from more aerodynamic cars.
