Half a century of Art Cars is a reason to celebrate.
BMW is, of course, known for its celebrated lineup of German luxury cars, which combine sharp styling and ample features with enviably fun driving character. However, a certain legacy within BMW’s history combines its signature automotive excellence with daring creativity and culture. Those are BMW’s Art Cars, an extensive collection of BMWs that have been customized by celebrated artists from across the globe, and that collection is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, since its introduction in 1975.
Called “rolling sculptures,” the legacy of BMW automotive artworks began with a car created by artist Alexander Calder, and the latest contribution to BMW’s art car collection comes from Julie Mehretu. The collection of over 20 cars represents the excellence of various artists, their rich cultural and personal backgrounds, and their artistic styles over the past 50 years.
To celebrate the milestone 50th anniversary of the collection, BMW has announced an Art Car World Tour. Starting in Europe and Asia, Roy Lichtenstein’s, Andy Warhol’s, Robert Rauschenberg’s, David Hockney’s and Jeff Koons’ BMW Art Cars will be displayed in Vienna, while Julie Mehretu’s BMW M Hybrid V8 will be displayed at Art Basel Hong Kong. Mehretu, going far beyond the Art Car itself, will embark in hosting workshops for young filmmakers and artists in five different countries in Africa, as well.
Sandro Chia’s BMW Art Car will be on display at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy, and the Louwman Museum in The Hague will display eight BMW Art Cars. With the 3 Series also celebrating its 50th anniversary, BMW M3 Art Cars by Sandro Chia, Michael Jagamara Nelson, and Ken Done will also be part of a commemorative display at the BMW Museum. A new Art Car book, a new Art Car 1:43 scale model by Julie Mehretu, and an Art Car fashion collection will be part of the 50th anniversary celebration, as well. With 20 cars and 50 years of legacy, BMW’s celebration of the arts and automotive excellence has created a truly iconic collection.
