BMW is testing the future of its “Ultimate Driving Machine.”
Self-proclaimed as the purveyor of the “Ultimate Driving Machine,” BMW’s lineup is known for its driver-focused ethos and performance-oriented character. However, the iconic manufacturer is on the cusp of a new era, with a variety of new concept cars showing off the potential of its quickly upcoming Neue Klasse models. One of those is the BMW Vision Driving Experience. While the car is not destined for production according to BMW, it will serve as a high-performance test bed for drivetrain and dynamics-related technology for the Neue Klasse models, a cohort dubbed by BMW as the “Heart of Joy.”
At BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, the first model of the BMW Neue Klasse is set to go into production this year, and the new prototype vehicle ensures that BMW’s legendary fun-to-drive character is present among the other paramount characteristics of the Neue Klasse: electric, digital, and circular. Undergoing endurance testing now, the Vision Driving Experience exhibits daring new technology that will characterize the next generation of BMW vehicles.
The Heart of Joy control unit works with BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control software to optimize performance, and the control unit, which will go into production unlike the BMW Vision Driving Experience vehicle, boasts the ability to process information ten times faster than previous systems, translating to incredibly precise performance and excellent use of the 13,269 lb-ft of torque the Vision Driving Experience vehicle can produce, a dramatic number meant to test the limits of the Heart of Joy.
The system also provides the vehicle with the ability to corner with incredible precision and control, and brake with smoothness for a thrilling, yet comfortable and noiseless ride in the electric vehicle. In addition, efficiency is increased by 25% in the BMW Vision Driving Experience thanks to the system’s intelligent use of energy recuperation. With incredible technology being developed with the help of its Vision Driving Experience concept car, BMW’s Neue Klasse will be an exciting new chapter in automotive history.
